They Came, They Saw, They Conquered! The GSE team from Denmark have managed to fit so much into their week, President Esther’s column has been pushed to pages 2 and 3 to allow enough space to recap on the amazing week we’ve all had.

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie

What an amazing week! I told you to hold onto your hats.

From just after 9pm Sunday night it has been non-stop. We met the amazing Danish GSE Team members Holger Heldbo, Rikke Langkjær, Line Nielsen, Kathrine Korsager Larsen, Jeppe James Olsen and Joan Lomholt Axelsen, after their trip to Kalgoorlie on the Prospector train.

Monday morning our first stop was the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder offices where we enjoyed morning tea with the Mayor, Councillors and Directors. From there we drove to the Superpit Lookout so the team members could have a look at our "hole in the ground". This was followed by a nice relaxing lunch at the Plum Cafe in Hammond Park. Then it was off to the Award Winning Kalgoorlie Golf Course for a game of golf. Team members then spent a quiet evening at home with their host families.

Tuesday saw team members taking part in the Vocational Day. Policing, Banking, Freight Handling and Fitness was on the Menu for team members. The evening saw the three Kalgoorlie based clubs join together for a Joint Meeting so we could all have the opportunity to hear the Team’s presentation. A very pleasant addition to the team uniforms was them wearing the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder ties and scarves that were presented to them by the Mayor that morning. A very touching tribute that indicated how welcome the team members felt in our Community.

During the Joint meeting I had great pleasure in presenting Rebekah Moyle with the Certificate of Participation in RYLA this year. As her hosting Club it was a privilege to be able to present the Certificate.

Wednesday was a huge day. At 8 .30 Team Leader Ho lger accompanied by Jeppe and Line were at the ABC Radio offices to prerecord an interview for Thursday.

Back to my home for a quick coffee before catching up with the rest of the team at the School of the Air. This was followed by a visit to the Mt Charlotte Reservoir to hear a little about the CY O'Connor Pipeline. Then it was out to the RFDS Base for a tour of that wonderful facility.

Time for lunch at the famous Palace Hotel and an opportunity for the team members to see the famous Hoover Mirror and have a photo taken on the magnificent staircase. After lunch it was time to visit the Museum of the Goldfields and take a peek at the gold in the gold vault. From there it was a leisurely walk down the famous Hannan Street to the Kalgoorlie Town Hall where the CEO very kindly had the Council Chambers opened for the Team to have a look at this historic Chamber. I believe members even sat in the Mayor's chair! Then, yes there is more, off to Oasis for a specially blocked out half hour session for the team members to play on the Wave Rider (yes surfing in Kalgoorlie!) and Waterslide. I must say the film I saw of some of the members looked pretty good.

That evening saw George and I hosting the Team and club members for fish and chips. We also had the company of Peter, Scott and Brad who were three of the team members who had just completed riding through South East Asia visiting Interplast sights participating in the Miles for Smiles Ride. Did they have some stories to tell! An amazing adventure. I was delighted to be able to present to them with a cheque for $1500 from the three Clubs for Interplast.

It was a balmy evening with great company. A special thank you to Rotary Club of Hannans member April Armstrong who opened her home to host the three riders. April joined us for the evening as well.

Thursday saw a little later start to

the day with the first activity a Superpit Tour. This gave members an opportunity to see the Superpit from the 'inside'. This was followed by a 40 minute drive to Mt Monger S ta t ion where Jan ie Jones entertained the team members and Rotarians who travelled with them. Camel, Kangaroo and Emu were the order of the menu for the day followed by Pavlova.

Back to Kalgoorlie and Rydges where some special pampering has been organised for Fr iday afternoon. A BBQ tea in the twilight and into the night at Rotary Peace Park saw the end of this full day. Team members had the opportunity to walk around this beautiful passive recreation park which was a gift to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder by the Rotary Clubs of Kalgoorlie and Hannans during the Centenary year of Rotary.

Friday, the teams last day in our beautiful city will see them meeting up at Rydges at 8.30am where they will have a chat to a Kalgoorlie Miner reporter. We can anticipate seeing an article in the paper through the forthcoming week. From there we will head up to Hannans North Tourist Mine where local prospector Lindsay Stockdale assisted by Gerry Lamont will give team members an opportunity to do some gold panning and dry blowing. What trip to Kalgoorlie-Boulder would be complete without either of these activities!

It is hoped a visit to East Kalgoorlie Primary School can be organised to follow prior to heading for Rydges for lunch. After lunch is some leisure time. Members are going for some pampering at the Rydges Day Spa. This will revitalise them for the evening that will begin at Kalgoorlie Hotel “Judds” for Pizza.

Team members will be joined by Rotarians, Host families, Chelsea Gillam (GSE Team member who went to Brazil hosted by the Rotary

Club of Boulder) and Michael Young (GSE Team member who went to Russia hosted by the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie). Bhree and James, two very generous Police Officers who hosted the two Police Officers in the team will also join us. Then the brave will join the team members for a night in Hannan Street.

Saturday morning will see a very emotional farewell to these new friends from Denmark as they board their Virgin flight to Perth into the arms of the members of the Rotary Club of Fremantle.

The week’s activities could not have taken place with the support of club members, and here I am going to name names. Anne Skinner who helped put the program together. I think this was a steep learning curve for Anne. The logistics and timing of activities sometimes felt like they were never going to come together, but they surely did. This was coupled this week with the uncertainty of the team from Miles for Smiles ever getting to Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Delays, both inside and outside of Australia made for many changes in arrival time. It was wonderful they were able to join us Wednesday night. Thank you Anne a sterling job, some days under very difficult circumstances. Edward Brennan from Rydges, what can I say, you offered the bus and whenever it was needed there you were. Mr Reliable. Thank you for your continuing support Edward. Gavin Gilmore for hosting Joan. Not only did you host, but you and Colleen joined us for a number of activities. Thank you. Georgia Underwood thank you for hosting Rikke and Kathrine. You not only home hosted the girls, but you also arranged their Vocational day in the bank. Cherie Wallace, thank you for supporting the team by coming along to some of the activities when your work permitted. Gloria Moyle, Danny and Kylie Vincent your support at the joint meeting was

appreciated. Stephen Harper it was great to have your company at the activities you were able to attend. James Parker and Bhree Raven, what can I say you opened your homes to two team members, you attended events, you chauffeured Jeppe and Line to wherever they were needed. Your unselfish giving of your time is very much appreciated. True service above self. Lastly, but by no means least is George Roadnight. George has supported everything I have ever done in Rotary over the past nearly 20 years (and everything else) and this week was no different. If there was anything at all that needed doing there was George. He took days out of this week away from the business as he has done many, many times to help out and fill in gaps. What would I do without you George? Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The week would not have been complete without the generous support of a number of businesses who hosted team members for their vocational days. Thank you to ANZ Bank Kalgoorlie, Sadliers, Western Airport Services, WA Police Kalgoor l ie Po l i ce S ta t ion , Goldfields Oasis Recreation Centre. A very special thank you to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. They hosted the Mayoral morning tea, provided the games of golf for team members and Rotarians who played golf. The wonderful staff at Oasis for arranging the time on the Wave Rider.

The businesses and organisations who opened up their place of operation for team members. The picture of Kalgoorlie-Boulder that the team members will take away with them has been enhanced by your support.

Oh my gosh, I certainly hope I haven't forgotten anyone. It certainly hasn't been intentional if I have. Your efforts and support are truly appreciated.

When we drop the team members to the airport Saturday morning that is not the end of our busy week. We're off to do the very first Sausage Sizzle to be held at Retravision. I don't know who is more excited the part owner Lane or us! Sausage Sizzles at Retravision are going to become a regular part of our Community Calender.

For a number of reasons three of our members have requested and been granted Leave of Absence by the Board Lin MacQueen-Henderson, Peter Sweeney and Sue Morley. We are hoping that their business pressures will become such that they will be able to join us again before the three months leave expires.

Monday sees us holding an ‘Introduction to Rotary’ for guests who have been invited because our members feel they could be ideal Rotarians. The format for the night will be the same as it as for the night we held last August. Each Director will give a short (5 minute) verbal overview of their portfolio. Guests will have an opportunity to ask questions. Ken Maisey and his wife Charmaine will be joining us as well. Ken is looking to transfer from his current club in the Eastern States and Charmaine is eager to become a Rotarian. It is a small world. When George and I went to register at International Convention in Lisbon, we turned around from the registration desk and guess who the first people were we bumped into. Yes, Ken and Charmaine. Small world. Ken and Charmaine also joined us during the week at various GSE events.

Life doesn't get much better than this.

Enjoy the rest of your week whilst you Engage Rotary, Change Lives.

Bulletin Editor’s Privilege .. This week would also not have been possible without the passion and efforts of Esther Roadnight. Esther’s home and heart was open to all, all week. Thanks from everyone Esther.

March is Literacy Month As we have all noticed, March has arrived and in the cycle of the Rotary theme months, March is Literacy Month. When the concept of theme months commenced back in 1983 literacy was considered so important that it was the theme to start the Rotary year and July was the dedicated month. Along the way, the penny dropped that there was rather a lot happening in July with changes of administration and new club Boards settling in.

Literacy is not only a significant goal for Rotary but it is also a special goal for Rotary because we know that literacy is a key factor in overcoming poverty and all that goes with it. Rotary considers it to be so important that it is one of the 6 areas of focus for The Rotary Foundations Future Vision – basic education and literacy.

The statistics are really shocking. UNESCO estimates there are 860 million illiterate adults in the world and about two thirds of them are women. Millions more are functionally illiterate, without the reading and writing skills necessary for everyday life. The United Nations has identified illiteracy as a major obstacle to economic, political, and social development.

UNESCO notes that literacy contributes to peace as it brings people closer to attaining individual freedoms and better understanding of the world, as well as preventing or resolving conflict. The connection between literacy and peace can be seen in unstable democracies or in conflict-affected countries where it is harder to establish or sustain a literate environment. How appropriate that in this year of Peace through Service we try harder to make a sustainable difference.

Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General notes that “Education brings sustainability to all the development goals, and literacy is the foundation of all learning. It provides individuals with the skills to understand the world and shape it, to participate in democratic processes and have a voice, and also to strengthen their cultural identity”.

I’m quoting from UNESCO as they succinctly identify that “Literacy is a human right, a tool of personal empowerment and a means for social and human development. Educational opportunities depend on literacy.

Literacy is at the heart of basic education for all, and essential for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, curbing population growth, achieving gender equality and ensuring sustainable development, peace and democracy. There are good reasons why literacy is at the core of education for all.

A good quality basic education equips pupils with literacy skills for life and further learning; literate parents are more likely to send their children to school; literate people are better able to access continuing educational opportunities; and literate societies are better geared to meet pressing development”.

UNESCO does have a major focus on International Literacy Day on September 8 each year. By making it a focus for a whole month Rotary puts the matter into real perspective, a day is not nearly enough.

It is not enough to have focus without action. All through the Rotary year clubs are involved in many projects that have education as a priority but in March it is an opportunity to take a closer look at the challenge.
