The armature of the construct ion is generated by Dave Brubeck’s ‘B lue Rondo a l la Turk ’ . His d ist inct ive use of uncommon t ime s ignature trans lates into a rhythmica l ly dr iven armature that ho lds three unique intervent ions , much as the so los in the song a l low express ion of musica l i ty and ind iv idua l i ty with in the tr io .

The “Urban Pattern” hote l , located on a b lock s i te a long the Avinguda Diagonal in Barce lona , he ightens exper iences in the urban fabr ic by ce lebrat ing and re interpret ing e lements tradit iona l to the language of the c i ty. Pub l ic funct ions are located a long the d iagonal , the main ax is of c i rcu lat ion . Registrat ion with the height of the adjacent fabr ic bui ld ings creates an opportunity for open spaces that serve as a pause in the vert ica l process ion . Ind iv idua l rooms above a l low for pr ivacy from the busy street leve l whi le keeping v isua l connect ion with the surrounding context .The language der ives from a re lat ionship between carved vo lumes and tectonics . Voids throughout connect programmed volumes in the tower. Tectonics ho ld th is negat ive space and are manipu lated to improve i ts qual i t ies and create a d iverse sequence of spaces as one trave ls vert ica l ly.

The main entry passes under a carved section of the city block that the tower shares. This shift from the usual corner entry celebrates the interior courtyard, improving it as a shared space for the neighboring residents and engaging the public. From this side entry, the core rises vertically though a large central atrium that opens to the elevated plazas which contain the remaining public functions.

Angled horizontal components of the skin maximize visibility on each floor while controlling levels of sunlight.

In the harsh environment of the desert , a sharp dual i ty is created through the cyc l ica l pattern of n ight and day. Th is art complex , cons ist ing of student dormitor ies , c lassrooms, exhib i t ion space, and observat ion space, embraces th is dual i ty through a language of spaces carved into the strong hor izonta l condit ion of the ground . Wal ls of rammed earth a l low absorpt ion of heat dur ing the day and re lease at n ight , decreas ing the ampl i tude of the temperature cyc les . Canopies d ivert d i rect overhead l ight and encourage softer l ight condit ions washing down the wal ls of the exhib i t ion spaces .

The observat ion tower acknowledges the hor izonta l nature of the environment by introducing a vert ica l system, e levat ing the occupants above the sunken compound and a l lowing them to exper ience the atmosphere from a contrast ing perspect ive .

Gainesvi l le ’s downtown area has a unique sca le that re lates wel l to the ind iv idua l . Th is inf i l l pro ject , s i tuated on an empty corner lot one b lock from the main vehicu lar artery , cont inues the int imate sense of sca le present in the fabr ic and manipu lates i t to accommodate ta l ler d in ing spaces on the corner . The process ion through the cu l inary fac i l i ty is sequenced to provide an effort less trans i t ion from the street . As ind iv idua ls proceed through, their re lat ionship with the street changes whi le they are presented with framed v iews of k i tchens and cu l inary c lassroom areas . The f ina l event ref lects back on the street from sec luded perspect ive .

Compressed entry from the street opens into an inter ior courtyard ( lower r ight) , t rans i t ion ing from the street to a ca lmer, introspect ive space. Visua l connect ion to the e levated p lane promotes vert ica l c i rcu lat ion upward , where the k i tchen space can be observed (upper r ight) . Space f lows into the d in ing area , where d iners can eat , f ind repose, and observe from an e levated perspect ive ( left ) .

Jazz music def ines i tse l f through the spontaneous . Whi le i t must be rehearsed and coordinated , i t is a language in which the extemporanoues moments are the most powerfu l ; the chance happenings and musica l conversat ions resonate the c learest with the human condit ion because they ref lect the uncerta inty of l i fe. The Char leston Jazz Inst i tute a ims to promote these events by creat ing gather ing spaces of var ied sca les around a uni fy ing courtyard that ce lebrates co l laborat ion . The performance and rehearsa l rea lm is wrapped by a system of pub l ic observat ion and interact ion , cu lminat ing in the formal auditor ium where the rea lms coalesce.

The centra l vo id in the pro ject leaves an open-ended space, intended to be f i l led with informal performance and musica l encounters , the mode of the “ jam sess ion” . The centra l i ty of the courtyard encourages a sense of cohesion and unity, supplemented by smal ler sca le gather ing spaces a long the c i rcu lat ion wal l . The publ ic is presented an opportunity to pause and observe these f leet ing spectac les on the path to the auditor ium.

Located in the F lamin ia neighborhood of Rome on the bank of the Tiber River, th is hous ing complex serves as an attract ion for the surrounding b locks and creates a sense of community through shared fac i l i t ies and act iv i tes . The s i te p lan ’s genera l form was der ived from a ba lance of interact ion with the water ’s edge, respect for the ex ist ing br idge, and or ientat ion to maximize pos i t ive effects of wind and sun l ight . Housing is located a long the streets ide edge to estab l ish a sense of threshold , creat ing a more int imate exper ience with in the community grounds . Entry process ion from the street ce lebrates each feature of the complex sequent ia l ly whi le one descends to the water ’s edge.

The Cascades Park br idge proposal was part of a major renovat ion of the Cascades Park urban greenway in Ta l lahassee , F lor ida . The park system presents opportunit ies for b ik ing and walk ing in the downtown area , manages stormwater , and he lps to connect the commercia l and res ident ia l downtown areas . The br idge would provide a cruc ia l connect ion and safe passage for pedestr ians and b ikers , as i t crosses one of Ta l lahassee’s bus iest roads and the two s ides of the park are otherwise not d i rect ly connected .

Apart from connect ing the greenway spaces on e i ther s ide of Monroe Street , the br idge’s s ingu lar form helps to d imin ish the v isua l impact of the mundane ra i l road br idge nearby . Th is effect is especia l ly important because the br idge is at a low point topographica l ly and can be seen from either s ide for great d istances . Th is iconic form thus becomes a gateway, he lp ing to uni fy the downtown area and the nearby univers i ty campus .
