Welcome to the new Rose Herald!

Norma and I have re-vamped the workings of our beloved Rose Herald. She will continue to beautifully edit every article and I will place them in a user-friendly computer format. We hope you enjoy the photos and memories of the past in this issue. Future issues will con-tinue to provide up-to-date rose and garden news and techniques.

In this issue, the society’s scrap books provided younger editions of some of our 65th Rose Show participants: these photos are sure to warm your heart and make you smile.

We will never be able to thank Norma enough for her end-less hours of producing years and years of the Rose Her-ald. Her steadfast devotion kept the reels spinning for new beginnings!

It was a beautiful Sunday morning and rose lovers gathered at the Shilo Inn to enter their rose specimens to be judged by ARS Horticulture and Arrangement Judges in the hope of winning a blue ribbon, a certificate, prize or trophy. With over 400 entries placed on long white tablecloths, the display was outstanding including the ar-rangements and photography exhibits. At the far end were two rows of sparkling trophies which capped off a striking room picture.

The new “Best of Show” award this year was won by Harlow Young for a Hybrid Tea Bloom Sequence in the Challenge Class. He also won the Queen of Show award with a different entry! Jim Campbell won the second

place King of Show award. See a list of winners in this issue. Note the “Clash of the Titans,” mainly Harlow and Jim, in the number of awards won.

The show went on without a “hitch” thanks to the fine committee of workers. Also hats off to Chair Helen Newman and Co-Chair Jo Angelos. Great picture of Helen and the article about our rose show which appeared in the Tri-City Herald.

Please keep in mind that the roses in Lawrence Scott Park need dead-heading. All help is appreciated in keeping the Honor Garden looking spiffy. Many people a day walk past and give us compliments.

We like driving to Clover Island where we often walk the dogs. The block-long entrance road is lined on both sides with trees and scores of yellow and pink rose bushes. It is so lovely we can’t help but comment each time we go. It is part of the revitalization of Clover Island by the Port of Kennewick.

Our June 24th meeting will be held in the yard of Norm and Claudia Ferguson. See directions to their home. We look forward to see-ing you there! Your Rose Buddies, Joann & Don Sayler

Message from the Co-Presidents, Joann & Don

TCRS Minutes – May 28, 2013

The May meeting of the TCRS came to order as called by Co-President Joann Sayler in the Sandberg Center. Fourteen members were in attendance. The minutes of the April 27, 2013 meeting were approved as printed in the Rose Herald. In Bob Louie’s absence, no treasurer’s report was given. Helen Newman reported all but 40 mini roses were sold at the Master Gardeners Plant Sale last month. Those remaining have been re-potted, fertilized and are ready for sale at the rose show. Tom Miles shared that the City of Kennewick in mid-May furnished bark mulch and man-hours to spread it at our Lawrence Scott Park Rose Garden. Jim Campbell mentioned that the notice of our so-ciety meeting did not appear in the Tri-City Herald this month, which may account for the low attendance for tonight’s meeting. It was reported that the containers/vases/bottles for the rose show are available at the Palmers' home at 579 Holly Street in Rich-land. Linda Kerkof requested 5 to 6 helpers for Richard in the rose placement duties on the day of the show. A sheet was passed for sign-ups. Jim Campbell made a motion that we reduce the dues for new 2013 year memberships to half price for half a year. The motion was seconded and passed. It was shared that Jo Angelos and Norma Boswell are going to switch roles in the production of the Rose Herald. Jo will be the lead co-editor and will change the way our newsletter looks. Joann introduced a letter from the American Rose Society requesting tax deductible monetary gifts to the ARS Annual Fund from all rose societies to help defray costs of running the organization and help prepare for the 125th anniversary of the American Rose Society in 2017. No action was taken. The door prize of leather gauntlet gloves to use when pruning roses was won by Richard Kerkof. His guess of Kathy Weber's three mystery roses came closest. The next meeting will be June 24 in the garden of the Fergusons. Linda Kerkof agreed to take minutes at that meeting. Helen Newman gave us a review of prepping roses for show, using roses from her garden as demos. She went over the show schedule and general show regulations and encouraged those who have never shown before to give it a go. She gave credit to Jo-Ann Brehm for the great job of designing the schedule for this year’s show and asked members to visit the advertisers and give them our business. Kathy Weber, Secretary

The Wandering Rose

Whisperer

By Harlow Young

threegkids@fron er.com

I love to search for beau ful roses

wherever I may be. In the past month,

while traveling about, I’ve enjoyed

“finding” roses in unusual places. Be‐

ginning with this ar cle a tale of two

roses, ‘Harison’s Yellow’ and, next

month, Rosa nutkana will be told. The story of 'Harison’s Yellow' starts with the

home where my siblings and I were raised. I re‐

member there being at least two large, spread‐

ing, yellow rose bushes, and some white ones as

well, in the front yard. My interest in 'Harison’s

Yellow' began with a chance discovery in Hermis‐

ton, Oregon, while driving to lunch with some

work associates. Along the roadside a bright

yellow rose was in full bloom. I made a mental note to go back and inves gate this eye‐catching

beauty before leaving town. The photo on the right shows this bush hugging the fence line be‐

tween the busy highway entering town and the recently cul vated field. The breathtaking bush

is about twelve feet wide and five feet tall. This reminded me of the rose in the front yard of my

childhood home.

I visited the ‘Harison’s Yellow’ in Uma l‐

la, Oregon which I photographed and

wrote about last year. I had to check this

year’s bloom and as you can see, it was

beau ful. The final pictures are bushes

discovered on the ditch banks of the

Kennewick Irriga on District canals.

Rose Herald, Tri‐Ci es, Washington                                                                                                 June 2013, Vol 49, No 6

                                                                                                                      8

These last two may not be ‘Harison’s Yellow’ since their

blooms (below) are more double than the typical

‘Harison’s Yellow’ and may have a li le deeper yellow

color as well.  If not ‘Harison’s Yellow,’ then they are

mystery roses.  If anyone can iden fy them as to their

registered name, I’d love to know.

The last photo is the full bush from which the

second photo on this page was taken.  It was

so full of bloom that it had the appearance of

being on fire.

This has been a fun spring journey for me and , I hope, for the

readers of the Rose Herald.  Let me encourage you to look for

roses in unusual places and report them at our next mee ng.

Next month my ar cle will contain more details on my spring

rose journeys.
