Created and led by the Outdoor Industries Association, Britain on Foot is a campaign that aims to provide a nationally recognised umbrella under which the many hundreds of local and regional

outdoor related initiatives, most of which share the same goals, can sit.

Britain on Foot has the potential to make an enormously positive impact on the health and wealth of the nation, by simply getting more of the public active!

The initiative will be launched in March 2013 and there are loads of ways for everyone to get involved.

During September of last year, Rohan partnered with Recycle Outdoor Gear (ROG) and the Gift Your Gear initiative, to offer the opportunity to take unwanted usable outdoor trousers, fleeces and jackets, regardless of brand, to your nearest Rohan shop. This applied to all brands, not just Rohan. So it was alright to ‘own-up’ to having other brands as well as Rohan! The outdoor gear donated made a

real difference to local community organisations, youth groups and charities. It enabled others to benefit from life changing experiences in the great outdoors, regardless of their circumstances.

All outdoor gear donated to Gift Your Gear is reused for its original purpose. It is not traded, recycled or sent to landfill. Sarah Howcroft, founder of ROG told Rohantime;

“If an outdoor jacket is worn for a couple of years then ends up forgotten in the back of a wardrobe its useful life is never achieved. Most outdoor gear will last much longer than most people want. If that jacket is donated through Gift Your Gear, to a local community organisation or charity working in the outdoors, the useful life of the jacket is extended and another person gets to experience the joy of good gear”.

In the beginningthere were Bags…

How important have Bags been to the Rohan name?Over the years, very important. Bags carry the Rohan lineage. Look at a pair of Bags and you will see they are timeless. Very few companies are selling a product that has such a lineage in the outdoor industry.

When did you � rst come up with the idea for them?Long before they � rst came to market. Early Rohan was much more about fabric innovation than garment innovation.

We needed a fabric suitable for a need rather than a speci� c design. So along came Airlight.TM

It’s a polyester and � ne cotton woven so tightly that it could o� er what we needed. Highly wind resistant, fast drying, durable, comfortable and light.

What was the inspiration behind them?Bags came about to accommodate the clothing needs of a group of mountaineers called Alpinists – elite climbers who carried all their kit to the high mountains rather than the Sherpa style whereby the kit is carried for you. � ey needed their gear to be lightweight, fast drying, easycare, durable and keep all their documents, passports and money safe. I think that sums up Bags. We worked very closely with this group during the 70’s and early 80’s. Many lived in the Yorkshire area.

Was the fabric already proven?AirlightTM fabric is unique to Rohan. So it was tested by ourselves and the Alpinists. Nothing went into production unless we were happy. It’s a very durable fabric. I am still wearing Bags and an Ol� o that are older than my grown-up son.

How did you design all the pockets, were they for speci� c items?As mentioned earlier, the pockets had to be secure. So you could hang upside down and nothing would fall out. � ey had to be comfortable. � at’s why Mark l Bags which had a thigh pocket were soon replaced with Mark l l Bags which did not have a thigh pocket. � ey were not comfortable. In the early days the fact that the pockets could accommodate an OS map was attractive. � ere has never been a Mark l l l Bags.

Were the ‘different’ colours always part of the vision?Yes, as with all the Rohan range. Colour is important to us all. We always tried to bring other colours into the outdoor market. Rohan Keswick have a fantastic display of Bags heritage colours in the Rohan Originals collection, see rohantime.com/3682/bags-of-colour-in-rohan-keswick.

Our iconic Bags are the original multi-function outdoor trousers and the blueprint for all technical trekking and travel trousers. Everything in our clothing range and, whatever they may say, everyone else’s, owes something to their design.

Astonishingly, they were � rst introduced back in 1978. And since then have been intertwined in the history of Rohan. To understand more, we’ve asked Rohan co-founder Sarah Howcroft to tell us how they came about.

Given that they were so innovative, were there problems manufacturing them?Yes, but the manufacturing skill available to us in Leeds was world-beating at the time. Garment failure, was not an option.

Did you anticipate that they would be such a success?I would be lying if I said yes. By the time Bags came onto the market we had established a reputation for innovation. So we had a loyal following. What became very obvious was the growth of the travel market was going to have a big e� ect on Bags. Or Bags were going to have a big e� ect on the travel market. � ey were and still are ideal for the lightweight traveller.

Do you have a favourite Bags story?Many of my favourites are told on Rohantime. In particular, Chris Townsend’s great walks of the 1980’s – � e Chris Townsend Chronicles 1975-1985 – Rohantime.

DeliveryOur standard charge is £4.95 to mainland UK addresses; you should have your parcel within three working days. Please call for a price, or check online if you need next-day or worldwide delivery. Alternatively, we now offer a Deliver to Store service. You can pick your order up from any of our stores with no delivery charge. Someone from the shop will give you a call when it’s ready for collection.

Returns or ExchangesPlease package the clothes carefully and include your exchange/re-order form that came with your original delivery. Use recorded delivery or something similar. If it’s more convenient, take them into your local shop.

The Rohan No Nonsense GuaranteeRohan products are designed and manufactured to be as functional, comfortable and durable as we know how. If for any reason they don’tlive up to your expectations, we will be amazed, disappointed and keen to know why. We will then offer you a replacement, a refund or a repair.
