Examples of Work – Core Transport Planning

Trip Distribution – Where will they come from ?

The origin of trip makers influences the effect upon the highway network. A gravity model can be used to assess the likelihood of travel from each area. The example above was based around 7,500 origin points, assessing population and travel times / distances to the site. In the figure above, the purple shows the short trips and the outer green shows the longer trips to the site.

Trip Generation – How many will visit ?

Establishing the likely number of vehicle trips to and from a site is a key part of the transport process. This part of the process effects the extent of work required at the point of access and at existing junctions within the area.

The graph below shows the number of vehicles accessing and egressing a proposed development. This is derived from samples of sites similar to the various elements of the proposals.

Examples of Work – Core Transport Planning (cont’d)

Trip Assignment – What route will they travel?

Assessments undertaken using optimal routing to assign development trips to the highway network and enable junction testing. This enables the establishment of the available capacity for the proposed development and the extent of any improvement works

Modal Split – How will they travel ?

Increasingly pressure to use sustainable travel modes and consider non car drivers as a priority is becoming a higher priority for development planning.

Examples of Work - Accessibility

Below is an illustration of walking distances and bus routes for an edge of city residential site to highlight accessibility. The diagram shows bus routes, bus stops and walking distances from the site.

Accessibility

Above is an illustration of employee locations to produce a travel plan for a company, this illustration shows bus routes, potential cycling zone and employee home locations to enable options to be considered.

Examples of Parking Assessment / Travel Planning

Parking accumulation exercises are undertaken to assess parking provision and prove to the local authority that provisions were adequate, even though well below standard requirements. This approach identifies peaks in parking levels during the day and for mixed use developments can aid formulation of parking strategies, allowing pool parking areas to serve several different elements of the site

Parking Accumulation Travel PlanningAs part of all development proposals a travel plan often has to be submitted to accompany an application and is subject to review throughout the lifetime of the development by the planning authority. The example below shows a derived strategy based upon the restrictions of the site and the uptake of the proposed mode changes.

Road safety analysis undertaken upon personal injury accident statistics to identify any accident problems that are linked with particular causational issues (darkness / weather / time period etc). Common factors shown in different colours to enable trend identification.

Accident Analysis

Below is an illustration of accident analysis carried out for a small project. This has been illustrated using GIS to show the accident severities and highlight any clusters. This has been shown over aerial photography.

Examples of Design Work

Norse Road, Bedford TOUCAN crossing  Rodgers Leask was appointed to carry out detailed design of a TOUCAN crossing to complete a development proposal at Norse Road, Bedford Work undertaken involved the design of the crossing layout, detection and signing and lining proposals.

Bath & West Showground Junction DesignRodgers Leask was appointed to carry out transport assessment work for 90 hA mixed use development site. An outline design for a new signalised access was required and a layout and capacity tests were produced to provide a suitable facility.

The facility was to cater for 1500 staff plus visitors and included offices, research and development facilities, retail, leisure, hotels, garden centre and pub / restaurant facilities. This created a significant transport demand and required major infrastructure works to facilitate
