SHoward (Sherri Howard) is a local artist that has lived in Huntsville off and on since 1970 but moved here permanently in 1988 after her husband retired from the Army SHoward did not begin pursuing her interest in painting and drawing until after she retired in Dec 2011 even though she has been exposed to ceramics and painting since she was a child her mother owned a ceramic shop and has painted for decades Over the past three years SHoward has taken art lessons covering a wide variety of mediums and styles SHowardrsquos true love is as a realist oil painter but she loves to dabble in other mediums (water color acrylics pencil drawing pen and ink) and styles SHoward won a monthly painting challenge selected by her peers on the PaintBasket website She has also had some of her pencil art featured in the PaintBasket newsletter SHoward loves painting and hopes you enjoy her work as much as she enjoys creating it

Business Lead Focus

With the passing of June into July and the hottest part of summer still on the horizon many people are taking a moment to catch their breath For some it is a deep breath in - to brace themselves for the rest of the summer and the coming fall For others it is an excuse to hit the beach soak up some sun and enjoy time with their families before schools start back Still let us remember the importance not only of the 4th of July but also the two holidays on either side of it that honor those have served and continue to serve in protection of our freedoms that we hold so dear this past May 25th - Memorial Day and September 7th- Labor Day So in a depar-ture from Perkrsquos usual feature on a specific person event or group who have helped to shape the ecosystem for entrepreneurs and small businesses in the area this issue is focused on freedom it itself

Websterrsquos Dictionary defines freedom as ldquo1 the quality or state of being free as a the absence of necessity coercion or constraint in choice or action b liberation from slavery or restraint from the power of another e the quality of being frank open or outspoken g boldness of conception or executionrdquo among other definitions Wikipedia however inextricably links freedom to liberty a concept that is linked across philosophy politics and society as being free from the actions of outside forces However the working day to day definition varies drastically for many of us We are a country of people who all have our own histories and stories

Now this is just one view of someone who grew up in a town tightly linked to the military and the government ie NASA Marshal Space Flight Center and Redstone Arsenal If it hadnrsquot been for a government that not only protected our rights and liberties wersquod be drowning in forces that seek to take them away We are in an era where the urge to grow independent businesses is on the rise not due truly to a dissatisfaction with the governments rules and regulations but born more of the rise in the entrepreneurial spirit and a surge in the support from those in the gov-ernmental sectors Has the government messed up Are their attempts to keep us safe at times over reaching Do they invade our privacy Yes but just as we discover new freedoms and pur-sue them the government too must learn how best to protect those individuals and their free-doms when the individual pursuit of freedom conflicts Furthermore when they are unable to do so we must make use of our freedoms and pair them with the responsibility to one another to achieve the goals that the government that is bogged down with beuracrisy and pressures from the powerful canrsquot

Freedom also canrsquot function without those who defend and protect Whether it is the statesman who fights in the stage of politics to establish better guidelines for the small business owners or the brave people who serve in the nationrsquos Armed Forces both domestically and across the world 12

we all owe a debt of gratitude to them along side our founding fathers Some of whose names have faded into legends but all were entrepreneurs and innovators from George Washington as a soldier farmer landowner distiller and first president to Benjamin Franklin statesman publish-er inventor innovator writer and shrewd businessman While these figures may hold a level of mythical proportions to many even they built upon the lessons of others and moved forward to give us some of the founding values of liberty courage and entrepreneurial spirit that our coun-try enjoys and thrives off of

To some parts of the world America is filled with images of cowboys and a wild freedom loving spirit paired with a love of free speech and crazy ideas sometimes to excess Personally I think we need more of that same crazy spirit in our entrepreneurial attempts Yes a solid plan and foundation are needed to build a good foundation and to grow but sometimes we get so wrapped up in trying to please everyone and dot every last ldquoirdquo and cross every last ldquotrdquo that we paralyze ourselves before we even start

Thatrsquos not to say we donrsquot need patience and rules because freedom without responsibility is anarchy and chaos So where does the balance of freedom vs responsibility weigh in There is a saying that goes only the truly rich and truly poor have absolute freedom because the rich are able to go beyond the common responsibilities and the poor donrsquot have enough to loose So does that put our responsibilities to one another as the defining limit of freedom How do we define those responsibilities For some it is about taking care of our own before others and to hell with everyone else For others it is caring for the welfare of others whether they be man woman child or animal

For me freedom is being who we are and being honest about it Does that mean we have to stay a constant self through out our lives No life is about change just as the water and wind shape stone and as time wears down even the strongest of things we are changed and shaped by the experiences interactions and shifts that life hit is us with

be who they truly wish to be on the outside as well as on the inside As William Shakespeare put it ldquothis above all to thine ownself be truerdquo and you donrsquot have to be rich famous or powerful to be true to yourself If you are a 6rsquo3rdquo muscled and bearded man with tattoos and see your true self as someone who loves men ballet and fine foods then go for it that is your personal free-dom but you are still responsible for contributing to society and to helping defend othersrsquo free-doms to love and live We must defend the freedom of others with our words and gestures We shouldnrsquot attack them for desiring the same freedom

That is not an open door to those who desire freedom but not responsibilities they go hand in hand If you are one of the poorest and donrsquot feel that you have anything to loose then you must speak up for the others If you are the rich then your task is to throw your money and power around to protect the freedoms of those who canrsquot For everyone in between it is about the bal-ance

So if you ask me what freedom is I say it is the ability to move forward and to chase your goal and dream as far as you can Will there be roadblocks speed bumps caution signs and maybe even a children at play sign Probably but freedom is about going as far as you want It is not about comparing success rates or reaching the same level as another person It is about going as far as you can and desire

As an entrepreneur I ask What is your definition of freedom
