ROBINSON CRUSOE

T he following is a Teacher’s Pack and accompanying audio tracks for the tale Robinson Crusoe. The exercises are designed to help prepare your students for the storytelling session.

Our storyteller needs the following conditions in order to embark your students on her exciting adventure:

- A large classroom where the students can sit comfortably on the floor in rows. Please remove any desks or other large objects.

- A space at the front of the class for her to act in. This should be at least 3m x 3m. This will be her stage.

- A power socket for her to plug in her sound system.

- A small table for her to arrange her props. A classroom desk is ideal.

- A group of students and teachers willing to have a good time!

We strongly recommend that students be prepared before attending a storytelling session. Please select the material from this teacher’s pack which you feel is most suited to your students’ age and ability.

We are open to any suggestions, comments or critiques you may have concerning the show or the contents of this Teacher’s Pack. If you have any doubts or questions concerning this activity, please feel free to call our central office or contact us by email:

Tel: 914 340 [email protected]

One last thing... We would be very pleased to receive any drawings or letters from students con- cerning the shows and we are planning to post the best ones on our web site!

ROBINSON CRUSOE

Introducing The TopicWord CloudGive your students a copy of the word cloud from the previous page or, even better, project it on to the smart borad. Explain that you are going to participate in a storytelling session in English. In pairs, ask them to look at the word cloud and guess what the story might be about. you can give them a clue... it is based on a famous classic! Take feedback from the students as an open class discussion. What do they think the story is about? And which book do they think it is based on? Why?

Topic BrainstormIf they haven’t already guessed, tell the students that the story is about Robinson Crusoe. Ask if they know the original story, and if anyone has read the book or seen a film adaptation. What can they tell you about Daniel Defoe’s novel Robinson Crusoe? As a whole class, make a spider-gram on the board using their words.

Now write these questions on the board:

What problems/dangers might you face on a desert island? If you went to a desert island, what would you take with you?

In pairs, give your students 5 minutes to think of some ideas. They can use dictionaries and make notes if they want to.

Now make two columns on the white board, headed ‘problems/dangers’ and ‘things to take’. Take suggestions from your class and make a list for each. We have included some suggestions below:

Problems/dangers:

- no food

- it is cold

- there are wild animals

- there are unfriendly natives

- boredom

Things To Take…

- a tent

- food

- a knife

- books

- matches

Shipwreck! Finally, divide your class into groups of 4. Nominate one student from each group. He/she must leave the room. Outside, tell your group of nominees that they are the survivors of a shipwreck, and have been stranded on a desert island for a long time. They must think of their survivor name, how long they were on the island for, how they were rescued, and what problems and experien-ces they had on the island. To help lower-level students you can photocopy the questions below. Now, back inside the classroom, tell the remaining students that they are journalists about to interview the survivors of a shipwreck, who have been stranded on an island. They must prepare some questions. To help lower-level students you can write some model questions on the board, or photocopy our example questions:

Ask your ‘survivors’ to return to the room and monitor your class as the explorers are interviewed. Allow around 2 minutes per interview before changing the survivors around so that each group interviews several different survivors. This activity is good fluency practise and also revises intro-ductions/ personal questions.

Homework: Creative WritingAs homework for more advanced classes, ask your students to write up this exercise. The sur-vivors must write up a neat account of their time on the island, in the first person, based on the answers that they gave during the interviews. The journalists must choose their favourite ‘sur-vivor’ and write a short article about him/her, in the third person, based on the answers she/he gave during the interview.

ROBINSON CRUSOE

SynopsisRobinson Crusoe is a champion surfer. She lives in Malibu. Today is the surf competition. The prize is one thousand dollars! Robinson wants to win the competition. But a tsunami takes her to a desert island. She meets a lobster called Friday, and some natives. But the natives are cannibals! Robinson must escape. She surfs a wave back to Malibu... and wins the competition!

Reading RaceOur storyteller will bring a modern version of the story to you school! Our Robinson Crusoe meets with all of the same problems and difficulties as Daniel Defoe’s classic hero, but in a C21st con-text. This is an interesting way to familiarise your students with our version of the story.

Photocopy the synopsis above and pin in to the wall of your classroom. Divide students into teams of 3. Explain that one student is the runner and the other two are the secretaries. The runner must go to the board and read the text. S/he then returns to the secretaries and dictates as much of the text as s/he can remember: this may a sentence, a few words or even individual words if the students find them difficult. The secretaries write it down. One of the secretaries then becomes the next runner and returns to the board, so that all three team members take turns to be the runner. The game continues until the teams have written down the whole of the text (all three team members must have a completed copy). The first team to finish put their hands up are declared the winners and the game stops. The winning team then begin to read their completed synopsis aloud, one sentence at a time. The other teams check it with their versions and you check it with the original, correcting any mistakes. During the correcting session ask for contribu-tions from the other teams, too.

Alternatively, you can do this exercise as a simple transcription, reading the synopsis and asking your students to write it down, phrase by phrase. Feel free to simplify or elaborate the text accor-ding to your students’ level .

Learning the words Copy the list of words onto a clean sheet of paper. Now, working in pairs, try to figure out the meaning of the words. Write your translation in Spanish next to each word. Then, using a bilingual dictionary, check your answers and look for any words that you couldn’t guess.

To finish, test each other by covering your word list and taking it in turns to ask each other how to say the words in english, for example:

LAURA: How do you say ‘juez’ in English?

HUGO: Ghost. My turn! How do you say ‘judge’ in English?

LAURA: Juez. My turn! How do you say... etc.

Continue until you have both guessed all of the words!

ROBINSON CRUSOE

Which one is missing?Divide your class in to pairs and give each pair a set of cards. One student removes a card and asks their partner to tell them which one is missing. Half way through the exercise, students swap roles so that each has a turn at guessing.

The slapping gameStill working in pairs, the students sit facing each other across the table. The cards are placed face up on the table. Call out a word and the first student to slap their hand down on the correct card wins a point.

The teams keep their own score and, if you wish to make the game even more competitive, you can hold a tournament in which the winners play each other until there is only one pair left for the grand final!

The memory gameNow the students turn the cards face down on the desk and mix them up. In pairs, they test each other’s memory by taking it in turns to guess what each card is before turning it over. The gues-ser can keep turning cards over until s/he makes a mistake, then all of the cards are placed face down again. The aim of the game is to finish with all of the cards face up.

Flash Card RevisionThis game can be played in at the beginning of your next class as a warmer to revise the new words. In pairs, students take it in turns to test each other by holding up cards with the picture facing their partner, covering up the word. Their partner must say the word out loud. The tester can see the word, so can give clues if necessary, and say whether their partner’s guess was right or wrong.

Arts and Crafts: Story bookPhotocopy and cut out the numbered scenes. Hand out the scene cards so that students have one card each (it doesn’t matter if some of the cards are repeated). Students then draw a picture to accompany the phrase on their card, and copy or glue the phrase to their picture.

Now collect the drawings and put them in order to make a complete copy of the story, illustrated by your class! you can make this into a book by adding a cover and a title page, which includes the children’s names. leave your class’s book on display in the library for children from other classes to read.

As an alternative, your picture story can be made into a wall display.

ROBINSON CRUSOE

The StoryOkay, so you’ve read Daniel Defoe’s version of Robinson Crusoe… now it’s time to discover Face 2 Face’s version of the story!

Robinson Crusoe is a champion surfer who lives in Malibu. She is competing in a surf competition with her friends Zuma and Barbie. Today the waves are big! Together they surf a few waves and the

judge gives them their scores. They are doing well in the competition!

After all that exercise they are feeling hungry, so they decide to go and eat pizza. But just then, all of the water disappears from the

beach… and a tsunami hits Malibu! Robinson is swept away by the giant wave. She loses sight of her friends and is carried away by

the current. She stays afloat by swimming and is washed up on the beach of a desert island. Where is she? And where are her friends?

Robinson wants to be rescued so she tries to attract attention by shouting, waving and lighting a fire. A helicopter appears and

she writes S.O.S. on the beach. But nobody comes to rescue her. She feels sad, cold and hungry. She counts the days by writing in tne sand. She builds a tree house and tries to find food. And she

makes a new friend… a lobster called Friday!

One day, she finds a message in a bottle, written by Barbie. Barbie is alive and on the island! Barbie and Robinson are so

happy to see each other. They have a beach party to celebrate and they dance around the fire.

That night, Barbie, Robinson and Friday are asleep in the tree house when they hear a strange sound. There are natives on the

island! The natives appear to be friendly. They offer to cook some banana soup for the three friends. But they are really cannibals…

and they eat Barbie!

Robinson is terrified. Quickly, she builds a boat and rows out to sea. But the boat sinks and she is chased by sharks! Just when

she thinks all is lost, she finds her surf board floating in the water and surfs back to Malibu on a giant wave.

Imagine her surprise when she realises that the surf competition is still in progress. The judge sees her arrive and declares her the

Extension work: History projectWork in pairs or small groups to find out as much as you can about Alexander Selkirk, the sailor whose story inspired Daniel Defoe to write ‘Robinson Crusoe’. Use books from your school library and the Internet. How does his story differ from Daniel Defoe’s version? Now make a poster about Selkirk’s adventure. Make sure to include dates and information on how Selkirk arrived at the island, how long he stayed, what his lifestyle was like on the island and how he finally escaped. Display your posters on the wall of your classroom!

Can you think of any more differences between the two stories?

What about similarities? Make a list on the white board.

Which version of the Robinson Crusoe adventure would you prefer to experience? Why?

ROBINSON CRUSOE

Robinson Crusoe IslandDaniel Defoe based the novel ‘Robinson Crusoe’ on the life of a real sailor, Alexander Selkirk, who was marooned on a desert island for 4 years and 4 months, between 1704 and 1708. The island, now known as Robinson Crusoe Island, forms part of the Juan Fernández islands, in the South Pacific, 670 kilometres off the coast of Chile.

In February 2010, an earthquake shook the Chilean mainland and caused a tsunami to destroy the island’s only village, San Juan Bautista, home to the island’s 650 residents.

As part of your Robinson Crusoe project, why not organise a fundraising event to help the victims of real tsunamis? your students could do a sponsored walk, a sponsored swim, or even better, a sponsored English-only day, during which they can only speak English, from dawn until dusk!

Here are a few pictures of the real Robinson Island. Times have changed a lot since Daniel Defoe wrote his novel, 300 years ago. look at the pictures and imagine what life might be like on the island now.
