LEARNING OBJECTIVES: To understand the structure of a story To consider the different elements of an adventure story To develop an outline of a story RESOURCES: Worksheets: Roald Dahl Adventure Activity Sheet Adventure Story Plan TEACHING ACTIVITIES: Group/Class Work 1. Working in pairs/groups, ask the children if they can think of any adventures that happen in Roald Dahl’s stories. Who are the heroes/champions in these stories? 2. Discuss each example/story as a class. What sort of adventures happen? What kind of characters are there? How are they introduced? What kind of events happen during the story? How does Roald Dahl build excitement? 3. Building on this discussion, ask the children to consider the ingredients of an adventure story. Revisit the story structure, story mountain and story planning framework. Ask the children what they remember about each of the different phases of the story mountain. Where and how does the author describe the character and setting and set the mood for the story? Individual Class Work 1. Ask the children to plan a story using the Adventure Plan Worksheet. 2. Explain that they need to think of the setting and characters, and consider how they might build suspense and excitement into the story. Plenary 1. Share with the class some of the story plans created by the children. HOMEWORK Ask the children to complete their adventure stories so that they can be submitted to the Dahlightful Stories Competition.
