Also, watch out for exciting opportunities to engage with Theatre Lovett, our superb artists in residence this year, some nice treats in store. All this and more, including a great cinema line-up, taking place from January to March. We’d like to thank all our wonderful audiences who regularly visit us here. Greetings from Theatre Lovett. As artists in residence here at Riverbank Arts Centre we are lining up workshops, performances and chats to be had over the coming months. If you see us upstairs or downstairs

or wherever you may wander please say hello and let’s start talking theatre.

SeVeN ReASONS TO COMe PLAy WITh uS AT RIVeRBANK ARTS CeNTRe, NeWBRIDGe

6

This exciting residency will also see an Acting Workshop, “Take a Bow”, come to Riverbank Arts Centre on Monday February 11th- Wednesday February 13th, Presented by Theatre Lovett. (See page 15 for event listing & further information).

Reason 1. Your friend might come along to Riverbank Arts Centre and meet Theatre Lovett, love it, rave about it, wave the fact that they’ve been there and you haven’t in your face, go on and on and on about it ad nauseam etc. Just get in there first and head that whole chestnut off at the pass.

Reason 2.If you like playing. Or indeed like plays? And have a penchant for theatre? If you are impressed by theatrical wizardry and acting technique in a “Now how could I do that?” way. Then come along.

Reason 3. If you have ever seen Louis Lovett act and play (The Girl who Forgot to Sing Badly, The House that Jack Filled …etc etc), come along and listen to his unique take on noisemaking and playmaking for all ages.

Reason 4. To be treated to a compendium of Theatre, Stories, Stage-Presence-Technique, Sound, Lights, Set, and Performance that go together like fingers and thumbs in a plum pie.

Reason 5. If you like invisible mud puddles, drum-kits and whatever you’re having yourself.

Reason 6. If you and your granny or your friend or your dad or your younger sister or any of your family and any of your friends want to laugh your socks off at the same thing at the same time and at the same place.

Reason 7. To see if a brave little somebody called _(insert your own name here)__can muster up all that it takes to take an idea and run with it.

Reason the Last. Go for it. That’s why.

Keep up with the antics, mail us at [email protected] to join our mailing list

Dir: Eric Toledano, Olivier Nakache / 2011 / France / 112 mins / Cert: 15AStarring: François Cluzet, Omar Sy, Anne Le Ny, Audrey Fleurot, Clotilde Mollet, Alba Gaïa Bellugi, Cyril Mendy and Christian Americ. Language: French

France’s most talked-about performance and film this year comes in the shape of this comedy that’s become the country’s second-biggest box-office hit of all time with its portrait of friendship across the racial and economic divide. Paralyzed from the neck down after an accident, gloomy millionaire Philippe (François Cluzet) finds little in life worth living for, until the arrival of his new assistant, Driss (Omar Sy), a Senegalese rowdy from the downtrodden banlieues. Not quite on doctor’s orders, Driss takes Philippe as far out of his comfort zone as possible and into a world he never knew existed—or rather always tried to avoid. Untouchable hit a nerve with French audiences, critics hailing it as a cultural milestone and asking “Is this the new Amélie?” .

Dir: Lenny Abrahamson 2012 / Ireland / 87 mins / Cert: 15AStarring: Jack Reynor, Róisín Murphy, Sam Keeley, Lars Mikkelsen Language: English

Lenny Abrahamson has convincingly depicted the world of Dublin junkies in Adam and Paul and of a desperate loner in a rural backwater in Garage. His latest is a portrayal of affluent Irish youth that is as compelling as his previous work, and confirms Abrahamson is emerging as a filmmaker of genuine significance. Richard (Jack Reynor) is seeing out the end of his summer holidays after his final year at school. A promising sports star with a bright future ahead of him, he spends his time hanging out with mates, proving himself a decent and popular lad who looks out for the younger members in his crowd, inspiring loyalty and respect from those close to him. Suddenly, a single, uncharacteristic incident changes everything for Richard, and his plans for the future could be derailed. With a script adapted by Malcolm Campbell from Kevin Power’s novel Bad Day in Blackrock, What Richard Did perceptively examines weighty moral issues with calm and integrity, and the young cast of relative unknowns put in exceptional performances.

The colossal success of A Separation has triggered an interest in director Asghar Farhadi’s back catalogue and now his previous work, from 2009, has come to Ireland. It is a really absorbing picture, powerfully acted, disturbing and suspenseful. With the return of their friend Ahmad from Germany, a group of old college pals (two married couples and a brother and sister, along with three young kids) decide to reunite for a weekend outing by the Caspian Sea. The fun starts right away as they quickly catch on to the plan of lively Sepideh, who has brought along Elly, her daughter’s kindergarten teacher, in hopes of setting her up with recently divorced Ahmad. But seemingly trivial lies, which start accumulating from the moment the group arrives at the seashore, suddenly swing round and come back full force when Elly disappears in a troubling incident. - Tribeca Film Festival

The NuALAS: ONe NIGhT OF DIGNITy

Ireland’s top all-female comedy singing sensations, The Nualas, are on the road again with their fabulous new show ONE NIGHT OF DIGNITY. In a world where pop stars think nothing

of singing in their underwear, The Nualas buck the trend by sporting proper, yet unbelievably glamorous, and shiny, stage attire. Expect original self-penned

numbers, scintillating vocal harmony, ambitious choreography and a night packed solid with craic, laughter, tears, and chat

(not necessarily in that order).

‘The Nualas are the new rock’n’roll.’ The Independent (London).

The Sand Park is the sometimes hilarious account of how big-hearted Offaly farmer James Anthony Lowery, a man in his mid-fifties, came to terms with the death of his son fifteen years ago and now, more recently, that of his wife Rose. It’s a play about rural Irish life and the way we cope with the inevitable, it’s a play about how life and death and humour and love and sadness all live in the same house together… And then a strange thing happens… Funny, uplifting and real, The Sand Park is a new play written and performed by Seamus O’Rourke, following on from the success of his sell-out hit comedy Victor’s Dung, which played 95 performances to packed houses around the country. Seamus O’Rourke returns to Riverbank Arts Centre following the hugely successful and hilarious production of ‘Ride On’ that was here in November.

“Unashamedly rural, unassumingly brilliant.” The Moth magazine

“We are taken on a roller coaster ride, I cried, I laughed but as with all of O Rourke’s work I left the theatre with a lot to think about.” Charlie McGettigan

BeCKeTT X 3

Following on from the success of showing 3 Beckett shorts 2012 last year, this year we decided to bring you 3 NEW short plays that look at human destiny in terms of poignancy, compassion and the necessity of dignity in facing the inevitable. A strong streak of Beckett humour is present in the conversational exchanges.

Eh Joe (40 mins): Peter Pacey and Colette Kelly Joe sitting on his bed hears the voice of his old love accusing him of all his past misdeeds and reacts guiltily

The Old Tune (40 mins): Peter Pacey and Oengus MacNamaraTwo old soldiers meet on a street corner and talk about the past, but their memories often differ about people, places and other matters. One of Beckett’s most amusing plays adapted from La Manivelle by Robert Pinget.

Footfalls (25 mins): Colette KellyMay walks backward and forward while her old mother in bed above, hears her and speaks to her. Is May a ghost? Is Amy who she sees in a locked up church late at night another ghost?

Dir: Benh Zeitlin / 2012 / USA / 91 mins / Cert: 12A Starring: Quvenzhane Wallis, Dwight Henry Language: English

In a forgotten wetland community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, six year-old Hushpuppy exists virtually as an orphan. With her mother long gone and her beloved but wild-living father Wink rarely at home, Hushpuppy is left to her own devices and the company of semi-feral animals. She perceives the natural world to be a fragile web of living, breathing things, in which the entire universe depends on everything fitting together just right. Certainly the most remarkable feature debut of the year and a sensation at Sundance, Zeitlin’s visually stunning film approaches its quasi-mythical subject from a magical realist angle. It is a tribute to the courage and determination of the people of southern Louisiana in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.

Fred Cooke has rapidly become a unique stand-up delivering a style of comedy that simply cannot be imitated. He has just made English BBC television debut in the Sit-Com “Vexed”. He has already contributed to a variety of successful Irish TV shows, both as a writer and performer, including RTE’s Republic of Telly, and The Savage Eye.

Chris Kent- Winner of the Comedy Smackdown at the Galway Comedy festival 2010, and of the Bulmers Nuttin’ But Funny Competition 2009, Chris is one of Ireland’s rapidly rising young comedians. A great story teller with simplistic views of the world we live in today. His laid back natural style preys on his own everyday and his abillity to laugh at himself makes for some great viewing. Chris was born to be a stand up.

Join us for an hilarious night of comedy with this duo.

Dir: Michael Haneke / 2012 / France, Germany, Austria / 127 mins / Cert: 12AStarring: Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva, Isabelle Huppert, Alexandre Tharaud, William Shimell Language: French

Michael Haneke’s ‘Amour’ is devastatingly original and unflinching in the way it examines the effect of love on death, and vice versa. It’s a staggering, intensely moving look at old age and life’s end, which at its heart offers two performances of incredible skill and wisdom from French veteran actors Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva.Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, Amour tells of octogenarians Georges and Anne, retired classical music teachers, long married and still enjoying each other’s company and life’s simple pleasures. Their daughter, also a musician, lives in London with her family. One day Anne has a mild stroke and Georges insists on looking after her but when a second one strikes, life as they knew it is over. In this poignant exploration of the power of love Haneke’s direction and marvellous performances from two legendary French actors leave one breathless and deeply moved.

‘Celebrate’ by Jerry Fish has just been re-released as a single this Summer. All proceeds of Irish Sales in 2012 will be donated to Barretstown Children’s Charity.

One of Ireland’s (by way of Brixton) most enigmatic songwriters and performers with a career spanning two decades, and a reputation for dynamic live shows. Touring the globe throughout the 1990’s as frontman of An Emotional Fish the alternative rock band that gave us the rock anthem ‘Celebrate’

Jerry Fish’s swaggering vocal has been described as Tom Waits in a good mood, or Leonard Cohen doing Dean Martin. Yes, the smiles come aplenty and witty lyrics are definitely Mr. Fish’s currency of choice, but Jerry’s songs have been so well crafted that they deserve more than a casual, amused listen.

Director Michael Mayer has placed his new production of Verdi’s gripping tragedy in Las Vegas in 1960. In this production, inspired by the antics of the Rat Pack, Piotr Beczala is the womanizing Duke of Mantua, Željko Lucic is his tragic sidekick, Rigoletto, and Diana Damrau is Rigoletto’s daughter, Gilda.

Libretto: Francesco Maria Piave based on the play Le roi s’amuse by Victor Hugo

Premiere: La Fenice in Venice on 11th March 1851.

Sung in Italian with English subtitles

MONSTER/CLOCK expounds the life of Toby, a castigated monster and apprentice watchmaker, who finds

his world blown apart by a raid on his workshop, and the kidnapping of his mentor and guardian. He is forced to flee from the safety of his desk into the vast steampunk fantasy world that awaits him outside his door.

In so doing, Toby discovers that there are many more hands at work than he suspected, and he may be but a cog in the grand nefarious machinations of his mysterious assailant.

This production is wise beyond its years. Brisk, smart and immersive, Monster/Clock could travel as far as the adventures that lie within it. Irish Times

One of the most anticipated films of the year, Paul Thomas Anderson’s tale of an aimless WWII veteran (Joaquin Phoenix) who befriends the charismatic founder of a new religion (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is a provocative study of male camaraderie, deception, and hubris.

In just five feature films, Paul Thomas Anderson has commanded a position at the very pinnacle of American cinema. His work is debated, studied and adored for its narrative innovation, its dynamism, and most of all for its sheer cinema. To watch the work of Paul Thomas Anderson is to watch movies at their most alive.

Dir: Jacques Audiard / 2012 / France / 120 mins / Cert: 15A Starring: Marion Cotillard, Matthias Schoenaerts, Armand Verdure, Celine Sallette, Corinne Masiero, Bouli Lanners, Jean-Michael Correia Language: French

One of the biggest box office hits of the year in France and a sensation at Cannes, Rust and Bone is the new film from the director of A Prophet, a powerful and emotionally raw love story starring Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) and acclaimed Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts.

Broke drifter and back-street boxer Ali dreams of making it big in the martial arts while scrambling to make a living for himself and his young son. Taking work as a nightclub bouncer, he meets Stéphanie, who works as a killer-whale trainer at an amusement park, commanding the beasts with an ease absent from her relationships. After Stéphanie suffers a terrible accident, the unlikely pair fall into a tender, tentative courtship.

‘Intimate, epic, overflowing with feeling and musical intelligence’ The Independent

Known for their timeless, unsentimental and quietly subversive tales of loss, fear, booze, brawls, abuse and sorrow, siblings Rachel and Becky Unthank are honest, young storytellers outside of time, forging links between folk worlds old, new and other. It’s hard to imagine a British folk band with fans like Radiohead, Portishead, Robert Wyatt, Ben Folds, Elvis Costello, Rosanne Cash, Ewan McGregor and Nick Hornby, but The Unthanks occupy a unique place in music. Influenced as much by the minimalist eccentricity of Steve Reich, Antony & The Johnsons, Robert Wyatt and Miles Davis, as they are by their Geordie native North East England, back home The Unthanks have established themselves as the most innovative and critically acclaimed folk band in modern history.

Using a kaleidoscope of unlikely instruments, their unique approach to storytelling straddles the complex relationship between modernism and learning from the past. Staunch traditionalism and sonic adventure ought to be polar opposites, yet they are easy bedfellows in the gentle hands of The Unthanks; the British counterpart to the leftfield folk leanings of Sufjan Stevens, Bonnie Prince Billy and Tom Waits. The Unthanks don’t sound like any of these acts but The Unthanks don’t sound like any of these acts but belong to a growing number of artists definable only by their restless, peerless eccentricity.

Join us to celebrate World Book Day as we present a rare opportunity to catch the next big name in children’s fantasy adventure, Alex Barclay, in conversation with the global-bestselling author of the Skulduggery Pleasant series, Derek Landy. These heavyweights of Irish literature will discuss the thrills and spills of creating epic worlds of mystery and magic for young readers, before opening the floor to questions from the audience. Books will be on sale after the event and both authors will be available to sign copies for their fans.

Alex Barclay writes about heroes and bad guys and beasts and heroines and caves and secrets and battles. She was the firstborn freak in a family of regular children. (Her 13-year-old niece, Lily, suggested that line!) Curse of Kings is her first book for young readers and will be published in Spring 2013. Barclay studied journalism at university and worked for a period in fashion and beauty journalism as a copywriter in the RTÉ Guide. In 2003, she left the fashion industry to write Darkhouse, the first of two novels featuring NYPD detective Joe Lucchesi. She won the Ireland AM Crime Fiction Award at the Irish Book Awards for her third novel, Blood Runs Cold.

Derek Landy is far too modest to talk about any awards or accolades his books may have won. He will not, for instance, mention the fact that his first book, Skulduggery Pleasant, won the Bord Gais Energy Irish Book of the Decade AND the Red House Children’s Book Award, or that his second, Playing With Fire, won an Irish Book Award for Children’s Book of the Year, or that his third, The Faceless Ones, is his mother’s personal favourite. The sixth Skulduggery title, Death Bringer was released in September 2011 and went straight to the top of the UK Hardback charts as did Kingdom of the Wicked on release in September 2012.

Dir: Andrei Zvyagintsev / 2011 / Russia / 109 mins / Cert: CLUB Starring: Andrey Smirnov, Nadezhda Markina, Elena Lyadova, Alexey RozinLanguage: RussianAndrey Zvyagintsev’s new film is a sharp, bitterly comic story of crystalline clarity about the moral and spiritual corruption of present-day Russia. A middle-aged former nurse, Elena, exploited by the boorish layabout son of her first marriage, is married to a wealthy retired businessman Vladimir, who is despised by the idle, estranged daughter of his previous marriage. When Vladimir has a heart attack at his gym, he decides he’ll make a will leaving everything to his daughter. Elena has a better idea, the consequences of which account for the tensions and irony in the second half of the film.

The subtlety and stealth of this movie is a marvel, and so is the complex and enigmatic performance of Markina. It inspires the question: who is Elena? What does she want? Who does she love? It is superbly shot and directed; it does not offer a thriller-type ending – the narrative is resolved in a disquieting minor key. A deeply satisfying film.

“The finest sean nós singer to be found anywhere in these islands today.”

Hot Press

“One of the most dramatic voices in contemporary music.” The Guardian

“Genius is the operative word here.” Time Out

Whether floating over ancient rhythms or pulsing electronica, there’s no mistaking the sublime, utterly compelling vocal talents of Iarla Ó Lionáird. One of the most ambitious recording artists in Ireland today, Ó Lionáird has performed with groups as diverse as The Gloaming, Afro Celt Sound System, Gavin Bryars, Peter Gabriel and The Crash Ensemble, while reimagining Sean Nós crooning in his solo albums, most recently in his critically-acclaimed release Foxlight.

For this tour, Ó Lionáird is accompanied by Cleek Schrey’s unique style of fiddle playing, which fuses Irish stylings with the Old-time music of Virginia. Sharing Ó Lionáird’s pioneering spirit, Schrey has collaborated in recent years with old time fiddler Stephanie Coleman, percussive dance phenom Nic Gareiss, and the viol consort Sonnambula. Completing the line-up is All-Ireland champion piper and fellow New York resident Ivan Goff, who has performed in many theatrical productions as well as playing with Riverdance, Whirligig, Cathie Ryan and Lúnasa.

A SIMPLe LIFe

Time 8pmprice 16

Dir: Ann Hui / 2011 / China / 118 mins / Cert: CLUB Starring: Andy Lau, Deanie Ip, Qin Hailu / Language: Mandarin

Ann Hui’s Hong Kong movie A Simple Life is a tear-jerker, but thoughtful and intelligent, with an anti-sentimental dimension. Andy Lau plays Roger, a film producer who is one of only two remaining occupants of the apartment where he was brought up. The other is the ageing household maid-cum-nanny, Ah Tao (Deannie Ip), who has been with the family since she was a teenager. When Ah Tao has a stroke and asks to be put into a care home, Roger unhesitatingly takes on the administrative and financial burden himself.

A sad and sombre film that uses a plangent piano soundtrack to tug at the heartstrings, but tempers this with a downbeat reality. Based on a true story, A Simple Life delicately traces a decades-long bond with pathos and humour.

RITe OF SPRING (BALLeT TWO IN ACTS)

Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring is widely loved as one of the greatest pieces of music of the 20th century. The savage beauty of the music, the depiction of pagan fertility rituals and human sacrifice caused riots at the Ballet’s premiere in Paris in 1913. This performance commemorates the 100th anniversary of that memorable and ground-breaking occasion.
