C o m m u n i t y p a r t i c i p a t i o n i n c o n s t r u c t i o n :C a n a b u i l d i n g b e g r o w n f r o m i t s j o i n t s ?

he UK forestry commission has identified a recent decline in demand for English Oak; the unreliability of supply, outdated harvesting processes and poor quality of extracted timber have led to a significant increase in foreign imports. This thesis confronts this issue and suggests how the implementation of technology, can begin to increase the yield of high quality oak from our UK forests.

The thesis also addresses the inaccurate connotation that oak construction requires a highly skilled labour force to produce beautiful buildings. Research into joinery led to the design of a constructed fragment, which allowed an unskilled community group to build a form, exclusively through the pegging together of short oak elements. It was concluded that these joints would need to be produced mechanically to eradicate inaccuracies in fabrication before scaling up to a full building proposal. In light of this, an advanced joint was designed and fabricated as a mock up using a KUKA robotic arm, this joint was later carried forward and used to define an entire structural system.

The system, using English Oak, is one that engages a community through its beauty,

tactile quality, and the fun of assembly whilst also demonstrating the ability to be tailored to different social contexts.

Striving to make a connection with a site, the thesis searched for a dense residential area incorporating a community group willing to participate in the building process. Ladywood, Birmingham was later pinpointed as an area that matched this criterion, an area in which a recent LEP master plan had established the need for community facilities. And so, Ladywood Birmingham, was selected to pilot this innovative, community constructed, building system.

The scheme has been named ‘Ladywood Community Complex’, and features 6 buildings each employing a different oak structural system. The scheme aims to readdress the current dull aesthetic of community centre buildings and create a truly inspiring place for residents of the city. Mimicking the forest in aesthetic quality, the density of structure differs within the buildings creating a unique spatial experience.

The ideologies behind this scheme can be applied to any site in the UK, all that is essentially required is the wish for a beautiful oak building and a community to build it.

he constructed fragment identified the need for a group of people to build the structure whilst also identifying the empowering and up skilling qualities of the system. In this respect the ideal building function for a building utilising this type of structure would be a building for the people in the city it is situated - a community centre. Allowing the community to build the structure themselves would also allow for the longevity of the building as the community will feel a sense of pride for it.

The material to complete the build will be sourced from the wyre forest and as such, a site in close proximity will be required for the build this is imperative in order to keep both costs and co2

emissions to a minimum. The site for the building with therefore be located in Ladywood, Birmingham.

The first image shows the proximity of Birmingham to the Wyre Forest and a masterplan for the area funded by the Greater Birmingham and Solihul Local Enterprise partnership. The master plan drawing outlines the need for possible community buildings, these are shown in red. The site the building as outlined in red.

The second image shows the current provision of community facility in Birmingham - dull, uninspiration places. The final images shows how these could look in the future.

he site model shown in the above images has been designed to cover the Wyre Forest and Greater Birmingham areas. Using oak as the main material for the model, a Kuka robotic arm and milling spindle were used to mill the subtle undulations of the typography into the oak blocks. Stencils were cut and charcoal was used to show the figure ground on the undulating surface of the oak blocks. The red line shows an historic trade route from the Wrye Forest to Birmingham City Centre.

uilding A is the first building that will be constructed as part of the Ladywood Community complex. The structure will make use of the six directional node that has been developed as part of the thesis research. The building will feature a cafe, large triple height atrium, creche, GP offices, pharmacy, lecture room, multi purpose clinic, function room, and roof gardens. Building B will feature a dance school, accessible for

all residents of Ladywood and Greater Birmingham. Building C is a temporary structure that will be constructed at the same time as building A. It will remain onsite until all buildings have been completed as it will house the robotic fabrication lab, a unit of 10 robotic arms that will work in unison cutting joints into the timber. Buildings D, E, F, G will be home to a cafe, indoor sports facility, CHP plant and centre for the arts.

s a response to both the milti-cultural nature of Britain and the recent influx of international students joining the university, the client (the university of cardiff) have set aside a budget of £3M for the design and build of a 1000m2 ‘student retreat centre’ within the city of cardiff.

In order to address the functional and aspirational requirements of the client it is imperative that the proposed scheme adheres to the long-term vision of the university:‘Features of our Vision and Mission are a striving for excellence, integrity innovation dignity, courtesy respect.”

It is therefore evident that the design challenge is to create a uniquely versatile venue in which students whether religious or irreligious will feel equally welcome and equally valued; thus crafting an innovative world-class facility

within a site saturated by constraints.

It has been recognized that the university of cardiff is also planning to expand the current ‘student High street’ in a northerly direction along park place; the ideology behind this vision works to break up the existing clustered layout of buildings consequently creating a diverse High street that is not monopolized by the student population.

Acting as a magnet, the proposed site can assist this vision by drawing the student population along the high street towards a building that can be used and accessed by all. The university has also expressed an interest in the possibility of opening the building up to the public; by simply detaching its location from the current centralized layout the likelihood of public use and interaction will immediately increase.

he ‘Student Retreat Centre’ emerges as a promising solution to the growing diversity and interest in the intersection of faith, spirituality and university life.

The initial vision is to bring people together regardless of whether they have religious or secular backgrounds. Research into trends in religious following shows that there has been a significant increase in people who class themselves as non-religious (in the 2001 census, 18.5% of people in Wales said the had ‘No religion’, in the 2011 census, this percentage rose to 32.1%. In direct response to these figures and in an attempt to increase longevity, the building design will introduce faith-neutral spaces with a design aesthetic that is universally perceived as a sanctuary and retreat for all.

The integration of a variety of elements that

allow all faith groups to adapt spaces quickly to suit their particular needs will also be provided.

To achieve a space that can be enjoyed by all, the scheme will focus on common interests that can be respected by everyone. Avoiding apparent forms of religious symbolism, ‘light’ emerges as a common theme that is enjoyed and appreciated by those of religious and irreligious backgrounds; it will become the central feature for the main gathering space. The proposal will be subtle and sophisticated, being careful not impose itself; instead the building will provide spaces that create an enlivening atmosphere and allow each individual the opportunity to interpret the space as they wish.

It is the combination of all aforementioned aspects that will join together to provide a solid foundation for an outstanding facility that will foster social cohesion and respect diversity.

he Archituks are three friends from Glenn Howells Architects, Birmingham – Ben Myers and Tom Shenton, both architects, and Rico Cacciatore, Part II. We were looking for an adventure and something a bit different to celebrate when two of the team became architects last June. On a whim, we discovered the Rickshaw Run, a 3,500km expedition across India in a ‘tuktuk’ – a three-wheeled, seven horse-power bag of bolts with no suspension and a tendency to roll over or vibrate itself to bits at every opportunity… not the ideal vehicle for transcontinental expeditions.

We were left at the mercy of the Indian people unfortunate enough to find themselves in our vicinity at our time of need

The route involved crossing the subcontinent from Shillong, in the isolated north-eastern territory of Meghalaya, to Kochi in Kerala at the southern tip of the peninsula, navigating some challenging terrain and taking on officially the world’s most dangerous roads. The three of us (tightly packed in one hired tuktuk) were without any particular expertise in mechanics, orienteering or indeed driving for that matter. The event organiser, The Adventurists, made a point of ensuring there was no prescribed route and no outside assistance at all during the 17 day journey.

As a result, when facing accidental Bangladeshi border crossings, exploding batteries spewing acid, electrical cockpit fires following bodged sound system wiring, serial self-disconnecting exhaust pipes and monsoon downpours, we were left at the mercy of the Indian people unfortunate enough to find themselves in our vicinity at our time of need. Our lasting memory of the trip as a whole will be the warmth and kindness of the people we met in these chance encounters; surprised to see foreigners in these remote parts of their country, truly amazed at our ridiculous

choice of recreational activity, and delighted to help us in any way they could.

However, the setting sun at 6pm and the onset of night brought an entirely new and frightening set of challenges to life. We will never again take for granted the headlight or the horn. The single most significant road obstacle we encountered in rural India, the cow, has neither horn nor headlight, and gave us some narrow escapes from certain death.

Each night we planned the next day’s distance and, usually en route, decided where to stay. We were up at 4:30 most mornings to make the most of the daylight. Often we made great progress, only to turn on to a very poor quality road that allowed us to go no faster than 10kmph for the next 40km; forcing us to spend 18 hours behind the wheel. Add the dirt and pollution which lies heavy on the lungs; the body vainly trying to get used to chickpea curry for breakfast each day; and the extreme concentration needed to stay alive on the road, and it is a physically draining experience. But a really good one. We made it all the way.

The Adventurists encourage teams to seek charitable donations and try to promote, in some small way, improving the world while trying to experience some unusual parts of it. The organiser’s affiliation with Cool Earth means that half our contribution will go towards the preservation of the rainforest and the protection of its indigenous people. We decided we would also champion Architecture for Humanity. AfH has given us the opportunity to connect our profession with our adventure and show how architecture can help people and provide relief.

One of three main projects that I worked on at Lead 8, this project is a masterplan for a 257 acre green site in Kota Kemuning (100 miles south of Kuala Lumpur).

Once complete, the site will be a full township comprising of mixed-use commercial, light industrial units, educational facilities and affordable housing.

The project is to be phased over 15 years, the design for the masterplan has now been signed off by the client - Gamuda Land. The central commercial hub is at design development stage.

Whilst working on this project my resposibilities were:

- Developing design concepts for commercial area.- Creating building massing options for commercial area.- Exploring tentant mix options on behalf of retail consultant DTZ.- Attending design team meetings.- Creating presentations for client presentations.- Rendering WIP images for client.

The first phase will be complete in 2019.

I - Lead-8 Singapore - KK257 Masterplan

A 3 month paid competition entry for a 460000 sqm site in Jakarta. This mixed use scheme incorporates hotel, office, retail & residential elements.

Lead 8 were one of 5 finalists from a list of high profile practies that included SOM, HOK, Adeas & KPF.

A fully set of coordinated CAD drawings, CGI’s and physical model were required for the client presentation.

Whilst working on this project my resposibilities were:

- Developing the design of commercial and residential aspects.- Creating cad drawings for the project.- Creating graphic images and diagrams.- Creating presentation material.- Coordinating with the physical model makers.- Creating a competition video in Premier Pro.- Building a 3d model to send to renders.- Coordinating with outsourced CGI specailists to produces final rendered images.

Presentations have now been made to the client and lead 8 are awaiting annoucement of the competition winner.

II - Lead-8 Singapore - Sudirman City

Taman Megah is a 55,000 sqm mixed-use development including a residential tower with 300 units, community hall and retail podium.

Lead 8 have taken the project from concept stage and are now at design development.

The majority of the client team is made up of trained architects, this has been of detriment to the project as there are many different design views being floated at DTMs. The project has been with Lead 8 for almost 2 years and during this time the design as faced several moumental changes due to conflicting opinions within the client team.

Whilst working on this project my resposibilities were:

- Creating, ammending, maintaining and issuing the fully coordinated revit model.- Attending design team meetings in Kuala Lumpur.- Communicating and coordinating with external consultants.- Working up a variety of design options for both resi and retail façades.- Creating presentations, graphics and diagrams.

The project is due for completion in 2019.

St Georges House - Cheltenham

Upon joining Glenn Howells Architects, the first project that I worked on was St Georges House Cheltenham. GHA were appointed to transform two pairs of badly treated Grade II listed Georgian villas into an extra care home.

I was lucky enough to work on this project from concept - tender stage and we were able to redefine retirement living and successfully respond to the HAPPI report (Housing our Ageing Population: Panel for Innovation)- Winning a HAPPI award for our work.

Whilst working on this project my responsibilities were:

- Working with the design team to explore concepts- Working up a full set of coordinated CAD plans- Modelling and exploring the building aesthetic- Attending design team meetings- Conversing with external consultants- Creating a pre-planning application- Creating planning application and design and access statement documents- Producing tender drawings including details- Coordinating with model makers in the process of building a physical model

This project is now on site and due to be completed early 2017.

London city Island is possibly one of GHA’s flagship projects and after a short period of time I was given Block H (Blue) to draw up and coordinate.

The scheme incorporates ten residential blocks and is located on a 4.7ha brownfield site on a peninsula between the River Lea and the Thames.

GHA were responsible for designing all ten residential blocks split over two phases.

Due to pressure from their client Ballymore, responsibilty was thrust upon me to draw up a fully coordinated set of drawings for Block H.

Whilst working on this project my responsibilities were:- Working up a full set of coordinated CAD plans- Modelling and exploring the building aesthetic - Attending design team meetings- Conversing with external consultants- Ensuring all apartments met ‘Lifetime Homes’ and ‘London City Design Guide’ regulations.- Aiding in the creation of a stage D report.- Specing interior and exterior finishes.

This project is now on site and phase one will be completed in 2018.

I was originally asked to look into the wintech office scheme as a feasibility study, this later matured into a job that required a planning application to be put in. Wintech approached GHA after they had purchased a piece of land in Cannock, West Midlands. Their brief asked for a creative office environment that took advantage of the sites created views.

With the help of the associate director we created an elegant rectilinear building that positioned the office at high level and opened the ground level up for ancillary functions such as canteen and breakout space.

Whilst working on this project my responsibilities were:

- Producing an initial feasibility report.- Storyboarding and testing building options and arrangements- Conceptualizing spaces, zones and connections.- Working up a full set of coordinated CAD plans- Modelling and exploring the building aesthetic- Attending design team meetings- Conversing with external consultants- Creating planning application and design and access statement documents

This project has been put on hold due to unforeseen problems with ground conditions.

Vauxhall Tower

The exceptional location of St Georges Wharf on London’s River Thames called for a landmark building to further enhance the new architectural landscape as the final phase of the development. The regeneration of the site and immediate area is already a demonstration project of practical delivery on a marginal site previously derelict for over 40 years.

Whilst working on this project my responsibilities were:

- Working up a full set of coordinated CAD plans- Modelling and exploring the building aesthetic- Attending design team meetings- Conversing with external consultants- Ensuring all apartments met ‘Lifetime Homes’ and ‘London City Design Guide’ regulations.- Creating marketing plans for the brochures.- Attending site visits

Dickens Yard aims to revitalising the historic heart of Ealing. The development’s stylish, contemporary architecture compliments the neighbouring listed buildings.

Dickens Yard comprises of 5 Blocks of luxury apartments, these blocks are due for completion summer 2019. Broadway Malyan have won the tender for the optimization and working drawings package and have therefore taken over from the planning architects (John Thompson & Partners).

Whilst working on this project my responsibilities were:

- Working up a full set of coordinated CAD plans - Modelling and exploring the building aesthetic - Attending design team meetings- Conversing with external consultants- Ensuring all apartments met ‘Lifetime Homes’ and ‘London City Design Guide’ regulations.- Producing a full set of working drawings for the entrance lobby- Designing sensitive renovation options for a disused fire station on site. - Attending site visits
