Fellow Rotarians,
To be invited to join as a member
of a Rotary Club is easy but to be a
Rotarian it takes commitment.
Committed to the cause of service.
Service to our own club and service
to the community. Many joined
Rotary for the wrong reason, but
stayed for the right reason. The
strong bond of genuine friendship
developed through good fellowship.
Members come together as
Rotarians to unite the power of one
with the power of many to bring
about exceptional change in the
communities they serve. Their
passion for service make a
difference in one’s life. Rotarians
are inspired individuals and their
selflessness inspire others.
This is the gift of being a Rotarian
and nothing more meaningful and
valuable than to share this gift with
others, inviting others to join us.
Engaging in smart partnerships with
other organisations, including
NGOs, government agencies, state
bodies and corporates, would
further expand our network of
affiliates to support our community
service efforts.
Our image building is through our
membership. The more, people who
knows us because of the good work
we do, the more, people would
want to be associated with us. They
offer to be our service partners or
simply wanting to join us because
of the fellowship that brings people
together.
“Rotarians are inspired individuals and their selflessness inspire others.”
NEWSLETTER GOVERNOR’S
ISSUE 2 - AUGUST 2015 FOR ROTARIANS ONLY
Every Rotary Club has its own
strength. Some are strong in
fellowship, some build their
attraction on the many projects
they carry out. Review your
Club’s strength and what would
attract one to join your club.
While growth is important,
retention of members is equally as
important. The survival of a club is in its membership and an
effective club is a club with
active participation of its
members. When members
are active and partake in
club activities, the rate of
retention is much higher.
While we care for the
community, every effort
should also be made to care
for our members. A happy
club is a healthy club.
“One of the most wonderful
things about Rotary is that it
allows you to be part of
something so much larger than
yourself.” – Past RI President
Glenn Estess Sr
… and that something is the gift
that Rotarians are gifted with.
Be Rotary Proud.

Being the month of August and the
very special month where a lot of
emphasis is being made both at the
District and the Rotary world
“Membership” seems to be the buzz
word. All of us are proud of Rotary.
We want a Rotary that creates a
huge, positive impact in this world.
Well, we all know great things
don’t happen by themselves. They
happen when we work hard, when
we have strong clubs, and when we
have Rotarians who love Rotary.
We have talked so much about
Membership in Rotary in recent
years. We need younger members,
we need more women, and we need
a more representative cross section
of our communities. But the fact of
the matter is, we just need more
members. And I think we all know
why. With more members we can
build stronger clubs, we can have a
greater impact on our communities
as well as the world at large; we can
increase support of our
Rotary Foundation, thereby
putting more hands and
hearts to work changing
more lives. And as a result,
we can attract more
publicity, which will in
turn strengthen Rotary.
We’ve been spending a lot
of time talking about
attracting members. We
talk about making Rotary
look good, we talk about
Public Image, and we talk about all
the things we can do to get people
interested in Rotary membership.
But I think we haven’t been talking
enough about something that’s even
more important, and that’s making
Rotary membership work for all of
our members, so that they don’t just
join a Rotary club — but stay and
become Rotarians. We need to look
harder at our clubs, be honest with
ourselves about the obstacles to
membership, and be open to change
- so that we can make Rotary not
only an attractive choice, but a
viable choice, for people of all ages.
There are many Rotary clubs that
are doing just fine, with a growing
membership, productive service,
and engaged Rotarians need to
assume leadership for building
strong clubs, and that starts with
bringing in new members.

done them, because the world isn’t
the same as it was. We need to be
bold. We need to be flexible. We
need to be

We need to
remember that the strength that you

And if we understand that, then we
have to also realise that we can’t be
looking to recruit only people who

And that will mean figuring out
what’s not working in those clubs
— and the best ways for them to
move forward. It will mean helping
them to think creatively, and
honestly, about how to engage
Rotary - and how to grow for
the future. And, in many
cases, that may mean doing
things a little bit differently than
they are being done now. Not every
Rotary club has to be a traditional

Rotary clubs most of us probably

DISTRICT OUTREACH (EXTENSION) CHAIRMAN 2015-16
PP DR. BASKARAN GOBALA KRISHNAN
ROTARY CLUB OF BUTTERWORTH
JAMES DAVIDSON - MY HERO
Rotary would have remained
unknown if Paul Harris and his
colleagues were contented with the
Rotary Club of Chicago. It seemed
that some Rotarians from RC
Chicago were dead against
extension right from the beginning
and it took quite a bit of persuasion
to get those doubting Thomases on
board with this idea of extension.
The extension of Rotary became
international when Rotary clubs
were formed in Canada, United
Kingdom and Ireland. By the early
1920’s, Rotary’s presence had
spread to Europe, South America
and even to parts of Asia with the
earliest clubs being organised in
Manila, Calcutta, Shanghai and
Tokyo.
Rotarian James Davidson from
Calgary, Canada was appointed as
the Special commissioner by Paul
Harris with a mandate to undertake
extension in the Far East. His
journey took 2 years and among the
23 clubs in 28 countries he
chartered, 7 were in Malaya. The
clubs were Seremban, Kuala
Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh, Klang and
Coast, Malacca and Singapore. He
will always be remembered and
revered as the man who brought
Rotary to our shores and inspired
many latter day Rotarians in our
district to undertake extension.
Reading about him and his exploits
inspired me and what struck me
most about this man was his
commitment and passion for
Rotary. I decided that if I do get an
opportunity to work on extension, I
will give it my best shot and do my
bit to perpetuate the legacy of this
great man.
The opportunity presented itself in
2008 as the District was keen to
start a new club in Sungai Petani. I
decided that I should give it a
serious try and the first thing I did
was to approach some of the
members of the defunct Rotary
Club of Sungai Petani. To my great
surprise, I found out that some of
them were still very keen on Rotary
and amongst them, PP Dato’ Dr.
Subramaniam, PP Moorthy Sharma,
PP T he mudu and PP R.
Subramaniam were very supportive.
As I was relatively new to
extension, I had the support and
experience of my senior club mate,
PP Jagjit Singh to guide me. It was
a real struggle to get more members
and at one point, I wanted to give
up. Then after about six meetings,
in came a young man, Arvind Gopi
Kumar who transformed the whole
picture. He was the live wire who
brought in a sizeable number of
members and the rest is history. We
chartered RC Bandar Sungai Petani
on 15th June 2010 and this was my
1st taste of success in extension.
This success gave me the
encouragement and confidence to
venture into extension again if
another opportunity arose. Kulim
was my next target as it was a fast
growing town and with the
blessings of my club, I started work
again. It was more difficult when
compared to Bandar Sungai Petani
which had a pool of ex-Rotarians
from the old club to start with.
RC Bandar Sungai Petani
RC Kulim
As luck would have it, two ex-
Rotarians, namely PP Sree
V i j a y a n a y a g a n f r o m R C
Butterworth and PP BH Lee from
RC Tanjung Bungah expressed
keen interest to return to the fold
and they were instrumental in
getting this club off the ground. It
was finally formed after many
months of trials and tribulations,
with the club being finally chartered
on 24th of May 2011. It was yet
another experience, much different
from my first venture.
In the year 2012-
13, I started work
on a Rotary club
in Langkawi,
which had been
an elusive target
for our district
for more than two
decades. It was a
mo r e d i f f i c u l t
challenge as we had
to face the relative
isolation of these
i s l ande r s . Few
attempts have been
made in the past, but
after much promise,
each time our attempts failed. It
was physically exhausting as I had
to make a road journey of nearly
two and half hours from my
hometown of Bukit Mertajam to
Kuala Perlis and
from there a sea
journey of one
hour to reach the
is land almost
every fortnight for
nearly six months.
I was again
fortunate that I
found a saviour
in the form of
my name sake,
Dr. Baskaran
Kosthi who
transformed the
interest group
from the time
h e s t a r t e d
attending the fifth meeting onwards.
It was a long and tedious labour of
love that finally made our dreams
of a Rotary club in Langkawi a
reality and the club was chartered in
March 2013.
RC Langkawi
“It was physically exhausting as I had to make a road journey of nearly two and half hours from my
hometown of Bukit Mertajam to Kuala Perlis and from there a sea journey of one hour to reach the island
almost every fortnight for nearly six months.”
RC Mont Kiara
In 2013-14, RC Seputeh and RC
Mont Kiara were chartered. In
2014-15. 3 clubs, RC Lake Garden,
RC Nilai Central and RC Kampung
Baru City Centre were chartered.
In this Rotary year we are working
towards the formation of bilingual
clubs in Taiping and Sitiawan as
well as clubs in Kepala Batas and
Kangar and hopefully an e-club.
The formation of a club in Kangar
is an obsession for me as it remains
the only state in our country
without a Rotary Club and the sad
part is that it once had a club which
was regrettably terminated in 1990.
It remains my toughest challenge so
far with no end in sight until now,
inspite of trying for nearly two
years.
It has been a long and hard road but
to tell you the truth, I have enjoyed
doing what I am passionate about
and it has been immensely
satisfying. The greatest satisfaction
for an extensionist like me is when I
hear about the good work that these
clubs carry out in the respective
communities that they serve. That is
music to my ears. It is a strong
vindication of the efforts and
sacrifices that I have put in to
spread the good work of Rotary far
and wide.
It goes without saying that I will
always dedicate my work in
extension to my role model in
Rotary, Mr. James Davidson. My
biggest disappointment thus far has
been the apparent inability to
inspire more Rotarians to become
involved in extension and take over
from us as we slow down.
It is my fervent wish and hope that
in the very near future, there will
emerge many newer and younger
Rotarians who will be committed to
extension and carry the torch that
was lit by Davidson way back in
1929 and keep it burning for a long
time to come. That will be the
ultimate reward and joy for people
like me and many others who have
given our heart and soul to
extension.

WHAT WORKED FOR ME?
When I first joined the Rotary Club of Teluk Intan,
membership was an issue. We had only 16 members and
we were recycling club officers. I believe my Club’s
situation was similar to that in many other clubs where we
always talk about bringing in new members, everyone
agrees its very important, and then at the end, we have
fellowship, everyone is in ‘high spirits” and we go back
happy. The next meeting is the same. We forget our goal.
I decided to change the situation. I promoted Rotary just
like another product. I made a list of potential 'customers' to
approach. The right target group is also important for us to
secure results. Normally I make appointments with the
prospects and meet them one by one individually to explain about Rotary. I realised that the general perception is
that Rotary is only for the rich, for the high society group, the elite and members need to make monthly donations
etc. Surprisingly some have also never heard of Rotary.
Next, I looked at W.I.F.M (What's in it for me). Most of us, whether we care to admit it or not, have selfish
interests at heart. Potential members are the same. Why should they get involved in an organisation if they don’t
gain any benefit?
When explaining about Rotary membership, I make sure
they are informed about the commitments they have to
make. This, when compared to the benefits of Rotary like
doing good while meeting new people, having great
fellowship and the opportunity for foreign travel, far
outweigh the monthly monetary commitments.
I also make sure I emphasise their time commitments.
Some prospects may be worried about not having enough
time on their hands. However, nowadays there are so many
ways to serve in a Rotary Club. They can always contribute
ideas via WhatsApp or email, avenues which we all use in
our daily lives.
When I started to bring in new prospective members, I realised my other members were also motivated and they
too started to bring in other potential members. It's all a question of FOCUS.
Lastly and most importantly is the question of how serious are we in wanting to develop membership. After all,
success is all about, “You reap what you sow”.
Gopal – President, Rotary Club of Teluk Intan
Editor’s Note
Dear friends,
August has come and gone, and you’re only getting to read the August edition of the Governor’s Newsletter now.
Coming up with a read worthy newsletter has been one of my toughest tasks in my time in Rotary. There have
been a number of changes, chief among them being the reduced number of pages. However, I hope that the
content is no less in quality and you enjoy reading this issue.
Being Membership and New Club Development Month, August has seen many new friends join us, so welcome to
this great family of Rotary. And to all friends, do keep sharing the joy of Rotary, for each of us is in Rotary today
only because we had someone who decided to share Rotary with us.
Lastly, do keep sending in photographs, news and brief updates on your events and projects.
