What is Rhode Island Watercolor Society?

The board and gallery staff, along with many of our members, are always looking at ways to improve and grow RIWS. This past month we started a rebranding effort. What is RIWS rebranding? Identifying who and what RIWS is and then getting that message out there.

We know...- we have a diverse, energetic, talented art community.- we have a beautiful gallery and excellent classroom space.- we offer exhibitions and classes for all experience levels.

Now we want to...- grow that membership to a large and active membership.- attract people to our gallery for activities and art purchases.- offer our members excellent choices for learning, activities and showcasing of their art.

As we define and fine tune who we are we will determine the best way to represent RIWS and get us noticed in the art world.

Thanks so much to all who applied to the “Anything Goes” Open Juried Show. I thank you not only for your entires, but also for your willingness to work with us as we work hard to find the best entry system that will work for our members. Save all your login information for the National Show as that will also use the CaFE system. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to the gallery for assistance on entering shows at RIWS. This will be our version of a small picture sale in which we are inviting all RIWS members to donate two 5”x7” unframed, unmatted original pieces to the gallery. We’re going to mat and hang everything in our gallery along with a short bio about each participating artist. We’re eager to showcase the talent and techniques our members have to share. We hope you will all participate.

Recently, we received a generous donation for our upcoming fall art yard sale. Among the several items donated, we found a portfolio containing some forgotten memories. These included postcards, letters, comic books and photographs dating back to the 1940’s-50’s.

We remind anyone donating to the RIWS to please have a thorough look through your items before dropping them off. You might just find some hidden gems hiding among them!

l o r r a i n e b r o m l e y I decided early on in my journey in the arts that watercolor would be my medium to master. My graphic design background/career pulls me towards simple compositions, incorporating shape/color relationships and calligraphic elements.

But the admiration of artists such as J.S. Sargent, C. Monet, A. Wyeth, J. Wyeth, bring me to the practice of painting. Drawing, design and photography are my tools. The love of traveling gives me the opportunity to use these tools to study patterns, nature and the diverse landscapes.

My 3-month residencies in Costa Rica, (going on 12 years) has given me the opportunity to develop my passion for the watercolor medium. The series of flora and fauna subjects are enticing and intoxicating. The botanicals, the cloud forests, the gardens, the tropical climates are diverse and intriguing.

Every painting is a journey, but never like the last, it keeps me coming back for more…

Lorraine’s Costa Rica works can be viewed now through July 7 in our gallery.I’m On the Path
