Asymmetrical hemlines, with their flowing edges and bohemian feel, are the perfect uniform for spring picnics and walks in the park. Designers like Jen Kao and BCBg have adjusted their hemlines accordingly, and the look turns out to be universally flattering. skirts that are knee-high in the front and drastically cascade to the ground in the back can elongate the legs and give the illusion of length and height. We found a few options at Queen of Hearts on Westminster street. The royal-blue, braided-waist skirt by Arc and Co. ($49) would easily transition from spring to summer, as would the bold ikat-print skirt by Lucille ($72). At Nava, on Thayer street, we found asymmetrical skirts and shirts in soft jersey material that’s both chic and comfy. And at Clover, also on Westminster street, we discovered a heather-gray, elegantly tailored, floor-length jersey dress with an asymmetrical hem; it’s a statement piece that would be perfectly paired with a bright necklace and high heels.

Conveying confidence and style, bold lips are the makeup trend for spring. Both Marni and Valentino sent their models down the runway wearing brightly colored lipstick, and the look works for us mere mortals as well. From multi-colored manicures to sassy, stay-on shellacs, nail color (or art, in some cases) is more daring than ever. Taking a cue from the runways of new York and paris, polish collections also are inextricably linked to fashion, music, and film.

Capitalizing on one of the most anticipated major motion picture releases of the spring, nail giant China Glaze is set to stock shelves with a dozen shades inspired by The Hunger Games, the young adult sensation that celebrated a March movie release. peppered with metallic and shimmering shades with a nod to natural elements (Harvest Moon, smoke and Ashes), the collection will appeal to both the Katniss Everdeens and Effie Trinkets among us.

For nails that like it haute, Chanel’s spring 2012 nail collection is unapologetically high-end, with “classic and trend-defining shades” including a limited edition “Coco Blue,” a muted baby-blue hue created in celebration of Fashion’s night Out, ultra-feminine pinks, and unorthodox shades of plum, peridot, and more.

Known as much for their witty names as for their trendy shades, O.P.I. has paired with the ever-colorful nicki Minaj for six new colors inspired by the eye-catching chart-topper. Look for neon lime green, bubblegum pink, and a hip “shatter” or crackle finish at local salons.

Cynthia Bogart moved to rhode island from Manhattan in 2001 seeking a less stressful environment for herself and her family, and she found it on Aquidneck island. But that doesn’t

mean she’s slowed down.As a regional editor for Meredith Corporation, which

publishes Better Homes & gardens, Traditional Home, and Country Home, Bogart knew a thing or two about lifestyle publications, but she also saw the challenges that traditional print magazines would face in an increasingly digital age.

“i realized i had to look ahead to the future,” Bogart says. “i saw that there was a void online in the market place for women over 35 to find quick reads in home and lifestyle topics. i have three kids and a home; i don’t have time to read magazines, so the idea came from my own experience. Most women today read their email, their Facebook and, and i thought, ‘Why not an online magazine that covers the basics of day-to-day life?”’ Thus thedailybasics.com — an online lifestyle magazine — was born.

The site features original content daily in the form of news reports, expert blogs, and videos. “Our reader probably has four jobs — worker, mom, wife, homekeeper,” Bogart muses. “And she volunteers. she’s crazy busy!” Bogart adds that thedailybasics.com reader can check the site in the morning for new articles or access new content via Facebook and Twitter during the day. “On Facebook, our reader can check to see what we are doing, what our posts are for the day and highlights of what people in our blogging community are doing,” she explains.

“Twitter has also opened up an entirely new world to me,” she adds, noting that she has “met” most of thedailybasics.com’s guest bloggers via social media. Bogart calls her expert contributors and guest bloggers “social influencers,” because they bring a large network of social media connections to the site.

their way through the thawing earth to reveal bright, bold colors, our wardrobe takes a cue from nature and embraces eye-catching, artful hues. Even the pantone

Color institute chose a daring shade of orange (Tangerine Tango) to be the color of 2012, so it should come as no surprise that audacious color is dominating spring style.

A spectrum of jeans by BDg line the shelves in a rainbow of unabashedly bold colors at Urban Outfitters (285 Thayer street, providence; $58) —electric blue, plum, persimmon, orange, emerald green, and yellow. in high-rise, skinny, and cigarette cuts, trendy colored denim is easily dressed up or down with sparkles or neutrals. not just reserved for garments, showy shades are making a splash in footwear as well. last few years and that’s mostly due to a new crop of bartenders who desire to mix more than your standard Cosmo or Long island iced Tea. Three of

the hottest places for cocktails in providence are The Dorrance, Tini and Cook & Brown public House. Meet the individuals who are raising the bar in these spots.

jesse hedbergEstablishment: The Dorrance, 60 Dorrance streetfavorite drink to mix? i’ve always enjoyed mixing anything i like to sip on myself. i really like conjuring the spirits and evoking the classic martini: two parts dry gin, one part good French vermouth, a dash of orange bitters, stirred, served up with a lemon twist. it’s perfectly simple and unboundedly elegant. A true example of less is more. On a side note, f — — dry martinis.Secret to being a great bartender? i think one of the secrets to being a great bartender is not having any secrets. share your knowledge, your experience, and those little tricks that you’ve picked up along the way. The more informed your colleagues, your guests, and even your competitors are, the better you have to be.best Rhode Island bartending story? i’ve been behind a bar or two, on-and-off for a decade now, and i’ve seen some serious salaciousness and hijinks over the years. i’ll spare you some of the ugly details. going way back in time, my first official shift as a real deal, bona fide bartender was at a nightclub in newport. On this night the place was totally empty at first, which was quite discouraging to a young aspiring barman like myself. Finally, after a long while, this guy came waltzing in by himself. He sat down and ordered a gin and tonic with lime. it was six or seven dollars and as he handed me a $100 bill to pay for the drink he said, “Keep the change!” i couldn’t believe it, but he assured me

that this indeed was his intention. That was the first drink i ever served, and to this day that was the most gracious tip i’ve ever been given.Where do you like to go for a drink? in my opinion, Lili Marlene’s is unequivocally the best bar in providence. it’s unpretentious, drinks are cheap, and the beer is so cold it’s sometimes encrusted in ice. i feel so comfortable there i often think of it as my other living room. The Avery has a great atmosphere and impressive spirits, beer, and cocktail lists. if i get out of The Dorrance in time to catch last call after work, i go around the corner to see Todd at The Congress. He’s the quintessential bartender.What do you drink at home? sometimes i try new cocktail recipes in my kitchen but generally i don’t mix drinks at home. i do red wine, or vermouth on the rocks, maybe a beer. Lately i’ve been into European eau-de-vies like Kirschwasser and slivovitz. You take shots of the stuff.If you were a liquor, what would you be? i guess i’d be a Miller High Life: champagne taste on a beer bottle budget. ThE EdgaR WInTER1 oz. Lili Marlene’s. it’s dark, the music is good, the drinks are always cold (the coldest High Life in town), food until midnight, and the staff is always wonderful. daIquIRI of paRadISE2 oz. rhum J.M.3/4 oz. lime juice3/4 oz. grains of paradise simple syrup*2-3 dashes Angostura bittersCombine all ingredients in mixing glass. Add ice. shake. strain into chilled coupe. garnish with lime twist.

1 cup sugar

1/4 grains of paradise

Toast the grains of paradise in a pan on a stove top for 2-3 minutes. Take off the heat and grind the grains. Add the ground grains to 1/2 cup of boiling water. Let steep. Add remainder of boiling water and sugar. stir all ingredients until the sugar is dissolved completely. pass through a fine mesh strainer and let cool. store in the refrigerator. x

LocaL food, faST There’s a saying that goes: if given the options of fast,

good, or cheap, you can only pick two — you can’t have all three; one option will always suffer.

But when it comes to on-the-go food in providence, that hypothesis has been disproved. El rancho grande serves up delicious Mexican food at great prices, seven days a week. Chez pascal’s Hewtin’s Dogs Mobile Food Truck has one of the best deals in the state with their high-quality, all-beef hot dog. And the barely one-year-old Mama Kim’s Korean BBQ truck delivers authentic gourmet Korean food at great prices.

a plateful of authenticitysituated on the ground floor of a house on plainfield street on the West side of providence, El Rancho Grande offers Mexican cuisine prepared by chef and co-owner Maria Meza. Maria moved to rhode island from puebla, Mexico, more than 40 years ago and always wanted to open a restaurant serving her native region’s traditional dishes. Finally, on Cinco de Mayo in 2007, she and her son Joaquin Meza Jr. opened El rancho grande’s doors and the place has been booming ever since.

With the exception of a few seafood dishes and specials, very few items on the menu costs more than $10, and all of it is very good and cooked fresh by Meza that day. For Valentine’s Day last year, Meza dreamed up a mariscos (shellfish) dish — shrimp and scallops cooked in a red spicy arbor-chile sauce with her house-made chorizo (some of the best fresh chorizo you’ll find in the area). it proved to be so popular that it’s a regular special now and at $8 it’s a complete steal.

if you want something truly authentic from puebla, we suggest Meza’s Mole poblano; those in the know say this dish contains the best mole (a spiced, smoky, chocolate-based savory sauce) they’ve ever had. in providence, Meza finds that the mole sauce sells best over chicken breasts, but feel free to ask for it on dark meat turkey pieces, as it is traditionally served. The $10 dish comes with salad, rice, refried beans, and tortillas.

Is there bacon on the truck?providence is catching onto the movable feast trend, too. Food lovers in area know that that Chez pascal is the casual French dining destination in town. What they may not be aware of — yet — is that the Chez pascal folks are behind the increasingly popular Hewtin’s Dogs Mobile Food Truck (and, during the summer

months, Hot Dog Cart). Everything on the Truck is under $10 and it is some of the highest quality fast food you’ll ever find — yes, fast food. For about the same price you’d pay at a national burger chain (and in about the same amount of time) you can get much better food, sourced from local, sustainable ingredients.

The hot dog is the least expensive item on the truck — a good-sized dog for $2.75. Hewtin’s Dogs serves all-beef hot dogs made by grote & Weigel outside Hartford, Connecticut. They are skinless, but because they are all-beef the texture is firm, giving you the feel of a snap, as if they had a casing. Chez pascal chef and Hewtin’s co-owner Matt gennuso reports that most customers “like them plain and then they dress them up with all of our condiments” (a traditional selection of onion, relish, chili, and house-made ketchup and mustard). How does gennuso like his hot dog? “i like them sometimes just with a little ketchup, or with chili, cheese, and sweet pepper relish. Or, if we have bacon on the truck, i will do them with coleslaw, bacon and pickle relish.”

Showcasing family recipes, fastOne of the newest trucks on the block(s) of providence is Mama Kim’s Korean BBQ truck started by “Mama” sook Kim and her son Hyun Kim. As with El rancho grande, sook Kim had long wanted to open a restaurant featuring her native Korean food; the Kims decided that a food truck aas the best way to showcase the family recipes.

Every dish is prepared fresh on the truck by sook Kim along with her sous chef Donald Fecher and crew chef James nelson. With the exception of the occasional special, nothing on the truck is over $7 — again, the best quality fast food you’ll find at great prices.

Their Beef Bulgogi rice set is an excellent meal served with premium Korean rice from the gyeonggi province and house-made kimchi. The traditional Kim recipe calls for shaved sirloin to marinate in a mixture of soy sauce, ground Korean pears, garlic, and freshly chopped vegetables; the meat is then grilled and served with sautéed onions and mushrooms and a wasabi-aioli sauce. if you’re not hungry enough for a whole meal, for $3 you can get the Beef Bulgogi, or several of their other rice set dishes, in wraps or freshly made slider buns.

There you have it — fast, cheap, and good — and three different ways. You could even hit El rancho grande, Hewtin’s Dogs, and Mama Kim’s all in one day, spend less than $40, and have leftovers too. x
