About ESETESET® is a global security company with headquarters in Bratislava, Slovakia and San Diego, California. Founded in 1992, ESET develops security software for home and business use. ESET software solutions deliver instant, comprehensive protection against evolving security threats. ESET pioneered and leads the industry in proactive threat detection. For nearly 20 years, ESET has consistently achieved the highest accolades in comparative testing both in the lab and “In-the-Wild”.

Sold worldwide in more than 180 countries, elegant, award-winning software solutions by ESET provide unparalleled threat protection and peace of mind with minimal user effort. For more information about ESET, please visit the ESET company web page.

The ThreatSense® EngineThe ThreatSense® engine is an integrated antithreat system that uses advanced heuristics to provide proactive threat detection. This includes emulation for removing encryption, packing and compression, direct code analysis to examine the objective of a threat, and predictive profiling (generic detection) to identify new types of malware. Once a piece of malware is specifically identified, a ‘signature’ or identification pattern is written by the ESET Virus Lab and added to our threat database. This ensures optimal performance by reducing the overhead of emulation and analysis. By default, the system checks for updates every hour. Updates include new signatures and improvements in heuristic detection.

To set up Parental control, enable it from the Setup menu and select a role for each Windows user account. You can protect Parental control settings with a password by clicking Set password. Click Not defined next to a user account to select Child, Teenager or Parent from the drop-down menu, which will apply a pre-defined set of parameters for the selected account. Click Setup next to a user account name to browse pre-configured categories that you can allow or block and further customize settings for that account. Click the Blocked and allowed web pages tab to customize the list of rules for the selected user account.

Gamer mode—Enhanced in ESET NOD32 Antivirus/ESET Smart Security 6, Gamer mode lets you suspend pop-up notifications, scanning and scheduled tasks while in full-screen mode. Gamer mode minimizes system resource usage so you can get the most out of your hardware when gaming and can also be used as a presentation mode. When Gamer mode is engaged, all pop-up windows are disabled and scheduled activities will be blocked. System protection still runs in the background but does not require any user interaction.

Host-based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS)—Provides an added layer of protection from malicious programs and unwanted activity attempting to negatively affect your computer. HIPS monitors running processes, files and registry keys, actively blocking unwarranted activities and preventing infiltrations. You can change the HIPS filtering mode by clicking Setup > Computer > HIPS and then selecting Automatic mode with rules, Interactive mode, Policy based mode or Learning mode from the drop-down menu. For more information on the different HIPS filtering modes, visit our ESET Knowledgebase article. Network —The Network section contains the Personal firewall*, which controls all network traffic to and from the system. This is accomplished by allowing or denying individual network connections based on filtering rules. It provides protection against attacks from remote computers and enables blocking of some services. It also provides antivirus protection for http, POP3 and IMAP protocols.

To configure the Personal firewall, click Network from the Setup menu. From here you can adjust the Personal firewall filtering mode and configure rules and zones. By default, the Personal firewall will be set to Automatic mode with exceptions. Automatic mode is suitable for users who prefer easy and convenient firewall protection. All outbound traffic is allowed, while new connections initiated from the network side will be blocked. To access more detailed Personal firewall settings, click Advanced Personal firewall setup.

Web and email—The Web and email section contains Web access and Anti-Phishing protection, Email client protection and Antispam protection*. These features can be toggled by clicking Disable or adjusted by clicking Configure.

Web access protection—Works by monitoring communication between web browsers and remote servers for compliance with http (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and https (encrypted communication) rules. Web access protection also includes URL blocking and email phishing protection. We strongly recommend that you enable Web access protection.

Antiphishing protection—Antiphishing protection monitors online browsing and warns you if a web page you are visiting has been identified as a known phishing site using reputation-based information from the ESET cloud. You can also report a web page you suspect may be participating in phishing or notify ESET if you think a web page has been incorrectly identified as such.

Email protection—Provides control of email communication received through the POP3 and IMAP protocols. Using a plug-in for Microsoft Outlook and other email clients, ESET NOD32 Antivirus/ESET Smart Security 6 controls all communications from the email client (POP3, MAPI, IMAP, HTTP).

Antispam protection*—Detects spam by scanning email message properties. Inbound messages are scanned for basic Antispam criteria (message definitions, statistical heuristics, recognizing algorithms and other unique methods) and the resulting index value determines whether a message is spam or not. Antispam protection in ESET NOD32 Antivirus/ESET Smart Security 6 allows you to set different parameters for different mailing lists.

ToolsThe Tools menu gives you access to helpful utilities like protection statistics, Running processes, the quarantine and the scheduler. You will also find ESET SysInspector and ESET SysRescue here, both of which are powerful tools for malware diagnosis and removal. Press F1 to access in-product help for more information on these features.

Running processes—This feature lets you assess processes running on your computer using the ESET Live Grid. To view the Live Grid, click Tools > Running processes. You can check the reputation of running processes and files, as well as view their potential threat level derived from streaming threat-related information from the ESET cloud. If you suspect a particular process to be malicious, you can submit it to the ESET virus lab for comparison against the worldwide database of ESET users in real-time. The Running processes window will display the following information:

Process—Image name of the program or process that is currently running on your computer.

Testing ESET NOD32 Antivirus/ESET Smart Security 6 *Test procedures contained herein are intended strictly for use by professional analysts in a quarantined lab environ-ment for comparative purposes only.

● Files should be on a local hard drive Unless testing the virus scanner on network drives specifically, malware files should be on a local hard drive. If they are not, figures for scan speed and system impact will be inaccurate. Scan speed across a network is limited by the network connection’s bandwidth, jitter and latency as well as by other devices that share the network connection.

● Settings should be checked When comparing products, determine if you are going to use default settings for all products, or configure product settings to match as closely as possible, because default values vary between products.

● Viruses should be real They should be unaltered samples that can be verified as viral through replication.

● Damaged files should not be used Damaged, illegitimate or harmless files should not be used for testing. This includes virus simulator files, which are not viruses and should not be tested.

● Test viruses should be existing variants Viruses should be unaltered from their normal “In the Wild” state and should be currently existing viruses. Altering any virus (assuming it is replicable afterwards) effectively creates a new virus. ESET considers such practice to be unethical and unprofessional, and will not participate in tests that are based wholly or in part on altered or specially created viruses.

● Normal files should be used in False Positive tests Clean files used in a false positive test should be normal files that would exist on an end-user’s system.

● Statistical integrity Sample selection should be made on a statistically sound basis because the number of samples used in a test is important. The Wildlist contains 250 - 270 pieces of malware on its top current “in the Wild” (ITW) threats. The smaller the set tested against, the more statistical error there will be in the test.

● Missed viruses Any virus that a product misses or fails to detect correctly, or any clean file that a scanner mistakenly detects should be made available to the product manufacturer for verification, and if necessary rectification.

Thank you for testing ESET NOD32 Antivirus/ESET Smart Security 6!
