What is Fundations/Just Words?

• Research-based reading and writing program • Explicit, cumulative and multisensory

instruction • Emphasizes phonemic awareness, phonics-

word study, high frequency word study, fluency, vocabulary, handwriting and spelling

Spelling Tests

• There is no “list” for spelling in Fundations or Just Words

• Tests are given at the end of each unit (1-3 weeks)• Students are taught WHY the word is spelled that

way and WHY English works the way it does • Use the Unit Resource lists to practice the

concept versus memorizing words • Learning concepts builds deeper understanding

that will be generalized to bigger, longer words

In a Nutshell - Tells you the topics covered in the unit - Tells your what trick words (sight words)

are being taught - Tells you the proposed length of the unit

(can be changed depending on student mastery)

Spelling and Reading

• Spelling words should be taught in context • Makes the words meaningful• Have your student highlight trick words in the

readers that are sent home • Have your student write sentences using

words that they are learning in the unit • Have your student read sentences that you

have written with the words they are learning
