This generally means an extra 6-8 weeks of paid leave per year, noting that staff may be recalled for 2 weeks each year for training, relief work, or to prepare the hostel for the next school term. Position Description

Duties and Responsibilities

Students

Assist and encourage students with routine school activities, including class preparation and attendance, homework

and studies.

Engage with students through group work and culturally appropriate recreational activities. Assist to develop

educational and cultural support initiatives, including mentoring and leisure activities that foster well-being and

independence for students.

Work collaboratively with the Residential Youth Worker team and other hostel staff to provide one-on-one support

to students, ensuring their personal and educational development. Contribute new ideas and identify opportunities

to improve the boarding experience for students.

Contribute to student’s individual care plans, and identify opportunities for development of skills or additional

support.

Promote and safeguard the safety and welfare of students, adhering to AHL’s child protection policy at all times.

Hostel Operations

Be responsible for administrative tasks including student applications, ABSTUDY support and student appointments

(i.e. medical, academic).

Oversee general housekeeping and residential support for boarding students. Complete allocated tasks as directed

by the Head of Boarding and Deputy Head of Boarding.

Participate in strategic planning and decision-making concerning business improvements for Secondary Education.

Where required, assist with general domestic duties, housekeeping, cooking or kitchen-hand assistance to ensure

the effective and efficient operations of the hostel at all times.

Perform the duties of the First Aid Officer, Harassment Contact Officer and Fire Warden as required.

Community Engagement

Keep informed of local community, education and employment activities and issues, to identify key priorities and

challenges for students.

Develop good rapport with local communities to offer supportive social and cultural connections for students.

Build rapport, foster and maintain relationships with school community.

Assist to resolve moderately complex issues to ensure a positive boarding environment and community for students.

Work, Health & Safety (WHS)

All workplace tasks will be performed in a manner which upholds AHL’s commitment to safety of its staff and residents by adhering to relevant Work Health and Safety (WHS) practices at all times. This includes the requirement for an employee to: o Promptly report workplace hazards and WHS issues, including injury or illness, to their manager or Health and

Safety Representative (HSR) as soon as practicable o Report an unsafe, hazardous or emergency situation using AHL’s critical incident management framework and

procedures o Appropriately use equipment or substances provided by AHL and report all asset and property maintenance

related matters.

Other Other duties as directed.

You must also demonstrate a detailed understanding of Work Health and Safety (WHS) practices, and be committed to operational needs, performing additional duties as requested.

Physical Requirements

Incumbents need to be in good physical health. They will be required to walk, lift and carry, work a flexible schedule, and must be able to move continuously during working hours. Shift work may apply.

Mandatory Qualifications

Certificate IV in Community Services – Student Residential Care, or a willingness to commence studies

Current Senior First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain one

Current Bus Licence for light-rigid vehicles (up to 25 seats) or willingness to obtain one.

Desirable Qualifications/

Experience

Mental Health First Aid Certificate.
