The researchers are all very thankful to our Lord Jesus Christ who is their source

of strength. Only by His grace, they finished the requirements needed for the research

study. Along the way, there were numerous misunderstanding within the group because

of differences, but God truly showed what love and patience is all about to everybody.

Only by His grace, everyone has enough knowledge and skills writing and gathering

    relevant data and thoughts.

The researchers would like to extend their most sincere gratitude to their parents

and families for giving them motivations in finishing their tasks. Because of their love for

the researchers, researchers are all able to make a wonderful and valuable study.

The researchers would also like to thank their thesis adviser, Ms. Rowena Ong,

for loving the researchers in a very unconditional way which pushed them work harder

    and harder.

The researchers are all thankful for the professor of Introduction to Nursing

Research, Mr. Philip De Guzman, who gave us the knowledge in making a thesis study.

Mr. De Guzman brought the best in all of the researchers by encouraging them to do a

    better job.

Special thanks to Ms. Liza Jimenez for being patient to the researchers. Without

her as the coordinator, this thesis is not possible at all.

The researchers are all acknowledging the part of Dr. Daniel Amen who gave

them the tool they used in observation for the respondents. Without his being giving, the

thesis is not going to be implemented at all.

The researchers would also like to thank Dean Carmel Villages for giving them

all the help they needed in this research study.

Attention plays a vital role in academic excellence, in work-related tasks, and in

daily life responsibilities. It truly makes a great difference when a person has its highest

ability to focus in the things he has to attend to. The need of having an excellent quality

of attention span is at its highest in pursuing life successes.

The researchers are from Southville International School who are from the

College of Nursing, who aims to be future Registered Nurses in the future. They all truly

care about their future successes and aware that attention span can affect their excellence

in their performances in every aspect especially in academic achievements. They went to

Southville International School and Colleges, where students are being trained to be

globally competitive and to be movers of society. They chose to study about attention

span since attention span is truly important in peoples lives for it affects their successes.

In addition, it is very valuable to think if gender can affect the quality of attention span.

This fact gave the researchers the motivation and need to study on the significant

difference of the attention between male and females.

Gender influences may be biological, social, or cognitive in nature (Maciones,

2002). Males and Females and their characteristics affect how they think, behave and

how they focus. Having the complete understanding of the difference of attention span

will show the strengths and weaknesses of males and females in their way of focusing

and perceiving subject matters which can greatly help teachers better understand and

work with students knowing what they are capable of and in areas they needed assistance.

The study also was chosen for it provides information on how students on can be assisted

in unleashing their maximum potential by utilizing their strengths and addressing their

    weaknesses.

    Figure 1.1 Conceptual Framework

The paradigm illustrates the flow of the thesis concept. The idea of the concept is

to determine the significant difference between the length of attention span of male and

female BSN Level III students of Southville International School and Colleges who are

enrolled 2nd semester S.Y. 2009-2010. The first two boxes represent the male and female

BSN level III students. The arrows that are used are associative arrows which represent

the study of finding a significant relationship. In order to find out the significant

difference of attention span of male and female, the researchers decided to observe each

28 random respondents from Sections B and C on their subject NCM 102 on the same

day, February 20, 2010. They used the tool from Dr. Daniel Amen which composes close

ended questions which can detect hyperactivity and inattention. When observation and

the questionnaires are all fulfilled, information gathered are tabulated, analyzed and

presented in a very accurate way.

    HYPOTHESIS

There is no significant difference on the attention span of respondents profile

according to age of Male and Female BSN Level III Students of Southville International

    School and Colleges.

y The tool that will be used in this study is reliable.y There will be a difference between the male and female attention span in

    the observation.

    SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study will benefit the following:

Nursing students from BSN Level III Year 2009-2010: Giving information

about the possible significant difference of attention span between male and female,

Nursing Major students will be able to improve on their attention span on the possible

prestigious school such as Southville International School and Colleges. The parents of

the students are dreaming endless for their children because of love and hope

Southville International School and College: This study will benefit the institution

since the study aims to find the significant difference of attention span between male and

female in the purpose of addressing the weaknesses of both genders for a better way of

focusing which leads to academic excellence. Excellent quality of attention span can truly

give good grades which leads to having excellent quality of students. Southville

International School College of Nursing will establish graduates with longer attention

span that will also give a great effect on taking the Nursing Board Exams.

Society: This study will benefit the society because of the fact that this research aims to

find the significant difference of attention between male and female. Gender difference

has been a very long social issue which has to be addressed. If found that there is a

significant difference, the outcome for males and females will be addressed. Their weak

weaknesses can be addressed and can be accepted by the society. In addition, having the

BSN Level III students attend to their possible weakness will benefit the society for

having future Registered Nurses who has better capability of focusing.

NURSING CARE MANAGEMENT: It refers in performing leadership functions of

governance and decision-making within organizations employing nurses. It includes

processes common to all management like planning, organizing, staffing, directing and

controlling. A good nurse manager should be open to anything in the environment and be

sensitive to the needs of the staff under her/his management.

ATTENTION SPAN: It refers to the amount of time that a person can concentrate on a

task without becoming distracted. Most educators and psychologists agree citation

needed that the ability to focus one's attention on a task is crucial for the achievement of

    one's goals.

Attention is the cognitive function which involves selectively concentrating in a

subject in the environment while paying no focus on other things. In addition, Attention

has been denoted to as the provision of processing resources. (Anderson, 2004) One

example of attention includes listening carefully to what someone is saying while

ignoring other conversations in a room (the cocktail party effect) or listening to a cell

phone conversation while driving a car. Attention is one of the most greatly studied

subjects in the field of psychology and cognitive neuroscience. (Strayer, DL; Drews FA

    & Johnston WA, 2003)

(James, 1980), All people know the nature of attention. It is the taking possession

by the mind, in clear and vivid form, of one out of what seem several simultaneously

possible objects or trains of thought. Focalization, concentration, of consciousness is

considered essential components. It implies withdrawal from some things in order to deal

effectively with others, and is a condition which has a real opposite in the confused,

dazed, scatterbrained state which in French is called distraction and Zerstreutheit in

    German.

Attention performs a vital function in the education, and training process.

Perception and observation is essential in learning and without attention, one cannot

observe or perceive. (Factors Affecting Learning Process, 2009)

    ATTENTION SPAN

Attention span is defined as the amount of time that a person can concentrate on a

task without becoming distracted. Most psychologist and researchers believe that

    21

attention span is a vital tool in achieving a persons goal.Attention can be measured by

sustained attention, or the time a person was able to continuously focus on tasks.

Attention is increased if the person is being excellent on a task, compared to a person

who is not competent performing a task, or to the same person who is still learning the

nature of the task. The estimated attention span to a freely chosen task for a 2 year old

child is about 5 minutes and about 20 minutes in older children and adults. (Dukette,

Cornish 2009) Attention span varies with age and older children are capable of longer

periods of attention than younger children. (Ruff, Lawson, 1990)

    LENGTH OF ATTENTION SPAN

Focused attention is characterized by having a short-term response to a stimulus

that attracts attention. The attention span for focused level is truly short. In addition, it

only lasts for 8 seconds without any lapse. This level of attention is attracted by a ringing

telephone, or other unexpected occurrence of circumstances. There is a high tendency

that the person after few second, will look away, return to the previous task or think about

    other things.

Sustained attention is characterized as the level of attention that produces the

consistent results on a task over time. If the task is handling fragile objects, such as hand-

washing delicate crystal glasses, then a person showing sustained attention will stay on

    Bachelor of Science in Nursing

    22

task and will not break any dishes, but a person who loses focus may break a glass or

may stop washing the dishes to do something else. About 20 minutes is the maximum

time healthy teenagers and adults can sustain attention on one aspect. However, they have

the ability to re-focus on the same aspect. The ability to renew attention permits people to

focus on things for more than a few minutes, and one excellent example is long movies.

    FACTORS AFFECTING ATTENTION SPAN

There are factors that affect attention such as health, environmental, and

personality. In health factors, trouble with attention may have cause by health problems

because the person may be less persistent, less attentive, and less responsive. This may

also affect the ability to concentrate and maintain their attention in a task. For the

environmental factor, homes and child care centers can be stressful location and can be a

reason for having a hard time focusing. There are some who can be easily distracted by

lightings and loud noises. These are one of the causes why they cannot maintain and stay

occupied while doing chores. In personality factor, activities should be interesting and

appealing to catch attention. There are some personalities who easily get bored, feel

uneasy, and lose interest. Activities more in visual, auditory, or physical is sometimes

more interesting. There are some activities that can be too interesting and irresistible to

concentrate to. Calm activities can help to concentrate to recognize and follow guidelines

    easy. ( Florentino, 2004)

    NURSING STUDENTS

Nursing is defined as the security, enhancement, and improvement of

performance of health and skills, avoidance of poor health and injuries, easing of distress

through the diagnosis & management of ones reaction, and support in the care of an

individual, families, communities, and the whole population. Opening half of year 2006,

there are about 65,000 nursing students that were newly certified as registered nurses

with 2.9 million other Registered Nurses in the nations biggest health care occupation.

Every student made an individual path of education to attain the certification of a

registered nurse and, after earning their RN license, each improved ones capability to be

a direct health care provider in the clinical area ranging from delicate care hospitals to

required of a registered nurse to the highly developed educational and clinical paths taken

by accomplished nurses, one of the goals of the nursing career is meeting different health

care requirements of the whole population.

These students are taking Bachelors of Science in Nursing at Southville

International School who are completing their 2nd

semester of Level III School Year

2009-2010. They are the group of students who are assigned randomly by the College of

Nursing administrators to be in Sections B and C. Section B is composed of 33 students

in which there are 11 boys and 22 girls. Section C is composed of 38 students in which

there are 18 boys and 18 girls. (Official Class List, 2010)

    Bachelors of Science in Nursing

The four-year university-based Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree

provides the nursing theory, sciences, humanities, and behavioral science preparation

required for the full scope of professional nursing responsibilities, and provides the

knowledge based necessary for advanced education in specialized clinical practice,

research, or primary health care. In 2005, 573 U.S. colleges and universities offer the

    BSN or advanced nursing degree.

First two years of Bachelors of Science in Nursing:

Most programs focus studies on human growth and development, psychology,

biology, microbiology, organic chemistry, nutrition, and anatomy and physiology.

Final two years of Bachelors of Science in Nursing

This is when many programs begin the focused nursing curriculum including

adult acute and chronic disease; maternal/child health; pediatrics; psychiatric/mental

health nursing; and community health nursing. Also, nursing theory, management,

y Repetition. It influences attention by repeating certain information. For example, some lectures are repeated to get the attention of the students. Repeated

    advertisements also attract attention.

y Novelty. A new stimulus catches more attention than an old or ordinary stimulus. It may come in terms of frequency, movement or content.

y Interests, motivations and values. We consistently pay more attention with thesethree.

According to the thesis weve found entitled: The Relationship between

Learning Styles and Attention Span among Third Year Nursing Students of San Juan de

Dios Educational Foundation, Inc. SY 2007-2009, they assessed the level of attention

span and how students cope with their learning during lectures and clinical studies by

observation and survey and they came up with the result that most of the third year

female nursing students have longer attention span compared to male nursing students.

There are different times of the day or night wherein people are learning. Time-of

day energy levels has a big impact on peoples ability to learn. Some are active in the

morning or evening; others are more on the latter part of the day.

People have a difficulty in processing information. Some people are more

attentive in details; others choose to see the big picture first. In memorizing data that they

are not interested to, they get bored easily.

Many students, who are more non-traditional, execute inadequately in school

because of the teaching strategies of their teachers that does not imply to some students

that have different learning styles. Most teachers are not aware of this. They are not

conscious that 30% of their students are not capable in remembering at least 75% of what

they heard and see. (Dr. Rito Dunn, 2000).

According to Dr. Pasipasigan (2001), there are different ideal condition in which

    adult learn best:

y The feeling of wanting to learn.y The learning environment is characterized by physical relieve, dependence,

respect, assistance, freedom of expression and acceptance of differences.

y They take up the goals of learning as their own goals.y They share conscientiousness for planning and implementing the learning

    experiences.

y They participate actively in the learning process, which uses an array of strategiesand techniques to permit them to use a personal learning style.

y Learning process relates to and makes use of their experiences.y They sense improvement towards goal.

2005 study, brain volume is correlated with intelligence, yet both sexes score about the

same on IQ tests. Men and women may take different routes, but they arrive at the same

destination at about the same time.

    Does size matter?

Even though womens brains are smaller, they have some distinct advantages that

may level the playing field. Studies consistently show that women surpass men on verbal

and memory tasks, and the superior temporal cortex, one of the brain areas responsible

for language. We can all notice that little girls develop language skills earlier than boys,

and theyre better able to make fine phonetic discriminations between speech sounds and

girls are more articulate than boys, their handwriting is more legible, and theyre quicker

at answering questions. The reason behind this is because womens neurons are 11

percent denser than mens in the prefrontal cortex and in a region of the temporal cortex

that is involved with language processing, comprehension, and memory. The male brain,

by contrast, is filled with more white matter, which consists of longer neuron fibers

coated with a fatty myelin sheath that communicate with more distant regions of the

brain. It gives men their ability to focus intently on work and tune out distractions, as

well as their clear-cut superiority when it comes to spatial reasoning. These are one of the

reasons why men and women are geared to certain careers and activities. Men still

predominate in fields like architecture, organic chemistry, physics, and neurosurgery.

to sit transfixed for hours playing video games. When talking about emotions, it has been

studied that females has a larger limbic system compared to males. This means that

womens brains are more connected with their emotions, and is far much better when

they express their feelings than men. Women are more emotionally attuned, while men

are more physically aggressive. The way males and females handle their anger or

emotionally upsetting situationswomen may feel sick to their stomach, while men tend

to act outmay also stem from fundamental differences in how their brains have

evolved. MRI scans showed that brain areas keeping aggression and impulsive behavior

in check were relatively larger in women than in men.

Limited research has investigated specific attention sequel following pediatric

traumatic brain injury (TBI), such as sustained, selective, and shifting attention, as well

as speed of processing. Little is known about the pattern of recovery of these skills or

their interaction with ongoing development. The present study examined attention

abilities at acute, 6-, 12-, and 24-month time points post injury in a group of 71 children

who had sustained a mild, moderate, or severe TBI. Results indicated that children who

sustained a severe TBI generally performed poorest, but showed most recovery over time.

The pattern of recovery was dependent on the attention component being measured.

Specifically, deficits were most evident on more complexes and timed tasks. While a

Parents of Australian twins completed two attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

(ADHD) questionnaires, the Australian Twin Behaviour Rating Scale (ATBRS), based on

conventional DSM-IV symptom scores, and the Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD-

Symptoms and Normal-Behavior (SWAN) scale, which includes above-average

performance on attention and activity. The two scales were compared in two age groups

of same-sex twins, 528 pairs aged 6 to 9 and 488 pairs aged 12 to 20. Parents reported

higher levels of activity and attention in their twins when reporting using the SWAN

scale than when using the ATBRS, and while the monozygotic (MZ) correlations were

similar on both scales, the dizygotic (DZ) correlations were consistently higher on the

SWAN. On DSM-IV based scales, parents exaggerated differences within those sibling

pairs in the with few ADHD symptoms category. The SWAN may provide a more

realistic description of the ADHD phenotype for the selection of twin and sibling pairs

In virtual environment exploration, the user's gaze must be attracted by important

features and information, but capturing user attention is not a straightforward task for

designers. The dynamics of attention have been generally thought to be affected either by

factors in the external environment, or by internal, motivational factors. The interaction

between these two types of factor guides the user's exploration and hence should be taken

into consideration in web design. Two experiments were carried out to explore the role of

internal and external factors in controlling attention processes in a website task. The

results suggested that the dynamics of attention are strongly influenced by internal

motivation in this context. It was concluded that individual motivation plays a crucial and

often predominant role in controlling attention when participants are engaged in activities

    using the internet. (Pravettoni,Leotta ; C. Lucchiari ,2008)

Factors affecting cortical thickness are the main interest in our gender studies

because the cerebral cortex is the most highly evolved part of the brain and deals with

higher cognitive processing. The cerebral cortex, like other parts of the brain, consists of

nerve cells with branches and functional connections called synapses; glial cells, the

metabolic and structural support cells for the nerve cells; and blood vessels. Cortical

thickness is a key factor; it gives us an overall indication of what is happening

collectively to these structures within the cortex. ( Smith, 2008)

The presence of the male hormone testosterone in the fetus may "masculinize" the

brain, organizing the fetal nerve centers in characteristic ways. This possible "sex typing"

of the central nervous system before birth may make men and women respond differently

to incoming stimuli. ( Corneo, 2008)

The purpose of this survey is to explore perceived gender differences in attention-

deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Online Harris Interactive interviews were

conducted with 1797 adults (general public), 541 parents of children with ADHD, 550

teachers, and 346 children aged 12 to 17 years with ADHD. Responses were examined to

determine perceptions of ADHD. Survey responses suggest that gender has important

implications in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. Responses by ADHD patients

demonstrate gender-specific differences in the personal experience of the condition.

Future prospective clinical trials are warranted to clarify the unique needs and

characteristics of girls with ADHD. The researchers found that males scored lower than

females in all age groups in tests measuring processing speed, with the greatest

discrepancy found among adolescents. However, the study also found that males

consistently outperformed females in some verbal abilities, such as identifying objects,

knowing antonyms and synonyms and completing verbal analogies, debunking the

popular idea that girls develop all communication skills earlier than boys. (Harris, 2006)

    CHAPTER3

    METHODOLOGY

    RESEARCH DESIGN

The design used in this study is descriptive comparative, in which the significant

relationship about the variables presented will be described in systematical, factual and

accurate way. The researchers will accomplish the official list of the students from

sections B and C and their complete number of males and females. In addition, the

groups of people who are studying the respondents are required to know the schedule of

NCM 102: Medical and Surgical Nursing lectures on a Friday for both blocks and the

chosen lecturer on that day. The observation will be done secretly to the respondents to

be able to avoid the Hawthorne Effect. The researchers will have to secure a letter of

permission to enter the NCM 102 lectures of the two sections which will be signed by the

Dean of the College of Nursing of Southville International School and Colleges.

The researchers found a very reliable tool from Dr. Daniel Amen, a trusted Brain

doctor in the United States of America who teaches at University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Daniel Amens questionnaire is composed of questions that will help the researchers

compare the attention spans of male and female BSN Level III sections B and C. The

researchers will compare the males and females and their attention span through thorough

observation with standards made by Dr. Daniel Amen. In order to be prepared for the

observation of the respondents, the researchers will undergo series of training in which

theyll be taught on how to observe and how to score the respondents according to the

formula of the questionnaire. The training is for each member of the research group

which will be done a week ahead of the observation for training purposes. In addition, it

will be for three days of reading the materials and testing it on each other. Some people in

the research group will be the observant and some will be practice respondents. These

practices are done for more accurate observation to be done. Each researcher will be

assigned to observe 2 respondents for accuracy of the judgments.

. After conducting the observation and the gathering the scores for male and female

respondents, the researchers will tabulate their scores. The researchers are conducting a

comparative study and will use T-test as their statistical tool. Moreover, they will analyze

and interpret the scores which can truly find out the significant relationship between

males and females from BSN Level III enrolled for 2nd semester S.Y. 2009 Southville

International School and Colleges and their attention spans.

    RESEARCH LOCALE

    RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of the study are BSN Level III from sections B and C students of

Southville International School and Colleges enrolled for 2nd

    semester School Year 2009-

2010. The total number of the respondents from both sections is 68 which consist of

25boys and 43 girls who are of the same age.

    RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

The researchers will use the evaluation questionnaire from Dr. Daniel Amen.

He is a physician, child and adult psychiatrist and a brain specialist. The author of the

reliable questionnaire is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

He is a CEO and medical director of Amen Clinics, Inc. (ACI) in Newport Beach and

Fairfield, California, Tacoma, Washington and Reston, Virginia.

Dr. Daniel Amen is the world leader in applying brain imaging science to clinical

practice. His medical clinic has the worlds largest database of functional brain scans

related to psychiatric medicine, now totaling more than 50,000 scans, and the clinics have

    seen patients from 75 countries.

Dr. Amen is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at

the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, where he teaches medical

students and psychiatric residents about using brain imaging in clinical practice. One of

the researchers has a good friend who is one of the Dr. Daniel Amens students at UCI

where the researcher wrote a letter to the famous doctor about borrowing a questionnaire

and because of the passion of Dr. Amen to help researchers; He was able to respond in a

short period of time. One of the researchers called the office where the secretary gave

instruction on how to use and their requirements for the researchers in using Dr. Daniel

    Amens questionnaire.

The evaluation questionnaire is composed of questions from 1 to 18 which are all

closed ended questions and the answers are all pre determined. The questions from 1-9

are to find if a person has problem in attention itself. The questions from 10-18 are the

questions to find if a person cannot focused because of being hyperactive. All questions

from 1-18 are to find combined inattention and hyperactivity of a person.

    d) Students must be prepared a day before the lecture.e) Students must have a good sleep to have a better focus and concentration.f) For future researchers to conduct further study in determining if the gender (male

and female) has a significant difference.

    g) It is suggested that a longer time should be given in doing the data gathering, inorder to have a more detailed and accurate results.

    h) Also recommended to do a further study to get more precise results that will notonly benefit the researchers but also the other people like the respondents,

    lecturers, and the institution.
