RESEARCH INTEREST

Principal interest: Art as the catalyst and mediator of cultural change. Interest lies at the intersection of cultures and

institutions and at the intersection of eras. The diverse themes listed below are sub-themes of the more basic motif of

intersection.

Colonial architecture and art in Asia: Baroque was the first truly global style, brought by Portugal and Spain to

the New World and the Indies. The permutations of the Baroque aesthetic as it traveled farther away from the

Iberian peninsula and the counterinfluence of colonized cultures are the loci of study.

Renaissance imprints and cultural dissemination: Technology was implicated in this exchange. Printing, which

spurred a communications revolution, was a tool for cultural dissemination. This is an area where I am planning

to focus research while at BC.

Heritage conservation: To continue to dialogue, interact and mine the past, the artifacts of the past have to be

conserved.

Popular religion and globalization: Religion is an special area of cultural change of which I am interested.

3

Art and religion: Consequently, the role that art plays in religion as a area of cultural change is involved.

Contemporary visual arts: The shape of contemporary visual arts can give a hint where culture is going.

Art and communication theory: Theories help organize the mass of data and information

Online education: As a new technology within the IT revolution. As a tool of communication IT plays a role

analogous to that played by Renaissance imprints.

A radical reinterpretation of Philippine colonial church architecture not as the product of Spanish but of

Hispanic influence. Hispanic meaning the Spanish empire, which by 1565, when Legazpi established a

Spanish colony in Cebu, had already absorbed influences from MesoAmerican culture. Besides, the

Spanish empire, even in Europe, was in flux. At one time the Low Countries and Naples fell under its

influence. Hence, the arts of the Netherlands, Southern Italy and Flanders were part of the Hispanic mix. Short essays by other experts are interwoven among the chapters and speak of the work of the different

religious orders and the secular clergy. Maps, called cultural trails, identify the geographic location of

these churches.

From 1565 to 1898, Spain built a network of fortifications. This system consisted of bastioned forts,

fortified towns and churches, watchtowers and lookouts, blockhouses and palisades. Some 300 of such

structures still remain scattered across the Philippine archipelago, some on isolated promontories and

11

uninhabited rocks and islands. These remains are but a small fraction of static military structures built

over three centuries of colonial rule. The static network was complemented by a mobile network consisting

of armadas of armed boats that patrolled the seas. The impetus for the construction of this defensive

network were the slaving raids that plagued the Philippine seas and the ambitions of other European

nations, notably the Dutch and the British, to establish a foothold in the Philippines.

Both archival material and material gathered from fieldwork are incorporated in this comprehensive study of Spanish colonial fortifications. The research begun in the 1990s is still on-going and will terminate in

June 2007.

This is a preliminary report proposes the importance of fortifications as nuclei for the colonial towns and

as the conduit for a lively cultural exchange. The fortification complemented the town church in its role as

centers of social interaction.

Partially funded by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts. Project title: Muog: Spanish

colonial fortifications in the Philippines.

2004. “Advocacy and Education in Heritage Conservation” in The Asian Face of Globalization: Reconstructing

Identities, Institutions and Resources. Ricardo G. Abad, editor. Kuala Lumpur: UKM, Malaysia. (An Asian Public Intellectual Program Publication, Nippon Foundation)

A comparative study of grass roots efforts at heritage conservation advocacy in four Asian countries:

Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Japan. The national laws on heritage conservation and the involvement

of government in conservation serves as the context in which grass roots organizations (NGOs) thrive. The

self-definition of these groups are in dialogue with the effectiveness of Asian governments in addressing

heritage.

The data for this paper was gathered over a period of eight months (November 2001 to July 2002) with the

research conducted over two month each in the countries listed above. Heritage conservation groups like

the Penang Heritage Trust, Badan Warisan Malaysia, and the Kota Gede Heritage Group, were contacted

as well as well known Asian advocates of heritage like Khoo Salma Nasution of PHT, Dr. Maeno

(Professor emeritus of Tokyo University arts and architecture), and Elizabeth Cardosa of Badan Warisan. Video interviews were made of the advocates. Sites and structures that exemplify the challenges and

successes of conservation were documented.

The published paper highlights a number of points about heritage conservation:

1. Interaction between government policy and implementation and grass roots advocacy groups: Where

government is effective and at the helm of conservation, e.g. Japan and to some extent Thailand, heritage

NGOs are not numerous.

2. Heritage NGOs can fill the gaps in government policy and implementation.

3. Governments tend to subsume heritage under tourism promotion, which commodifies heritage and poses

a danger of inauthenticity, or the theme-park style heritage conservation and promotion.

4. Heritage can be a catalyst for addressing not just conservation needs but can help foster community-

based livelihood projects.

5. Where grassroots communities take charge of their own heritage and not leave it to urban-based planner, heritage conservation efforts contribute to the revitalization of neighborhoods.

2003. “Dating the Santo of Bohol” In Tubod: The Heart of Bohol. Manila: NCCA (Exhibition catalogue).

Tackles the difficult question of the provenance of carved images of saints or santos, many assumed to be

“centuries old.” Examination, however, of the inventories (Cargo y data) of a number of Bohol churches

has called to question the facile attribution of antiquity. Many carved images existing and placed in Bohol

church retablos are from the 19th century.

Bailey, Steven J. Harris, and T. Frank Kennedy. Toronto: University of Toronto.

Article contributed: “The Jesuits and the Indigenous Peoples of the Philippines.”

Read during the 1998 conference held a Boston College, the paper presents two approaches to culture

Jesuits used when confronted with people in the Indies. To the more complex cultures of Japan, China and

India, the Jesuits acted as dialogue partners. To the tribal communities, they acted as benevolent

pedagogues. They had a far stronger impact on tribal communities shaping them into their image of an

ideal Christian society and polity. Their work involved the codifying of languages (vocabularies and

grammar) and the introduction of Western art forms and genres.
