Required textbook: Kleiner, Mamiya, et al. Gardner’s Art Through the Ages, Volume II, 13h edition or 14th edition. Course description and objectives This in an introductory survey course in art history that focuses primarily on the examination and interpretation of European painting, sculpture, and architecture from the late thirteenth century into the twentieth century. Material will be presented in twice-weekly illustrated lectures, and in a discussion section where information will be focused on in-depth and ideas exchanged. Students in this course will learn about the dominant visual styles of various time periods, and how the production of art objects reflects, comments, and gives insight into their contemporary political, social, and economic contexts.

Attendance Attendance in lecture and discussion is essential. More than three absences from a discussion section will result in ½ letter grade deduction from the final course grade. List of images A list of images to be covered in each section will be posted on the class’s D2L site. It is the student’s responsibility to print the image list for their use. Grades, papers, and exams A paper of 3-5 pages in length will be assigned in October. More information on this will be given later in the semester. There will be a midterm and a non-cumulative final exam which will make up significant portions of your final grade. Make-up exams will not be given without a substantial and documented reason. Final exam 40% of final grade Midterm 30% Paper 20% Attendance and participation 10% Students needing special assistance If any student required special assistance, please discuss your requirements with the Student Accessibility Center and let the instructor and your teaching assistant know what accommodations you will need.
