FROM THE RECTORYDearfriends,

TheOldTestamentreadingforthefirstSundayofLentthisyearisapartoftheGenesisstoryofAdamandEve,describingGod’sprovisionforhumanityintheGardenofEden,andthesinofAdamandEveintakingthefruitthattheyhadbeenforbiddentoeat.Lateroninthestory,GodsaysthewordstoAdamthatareusedinourAshWednesdayliturgies:“dustthouart,anduntodustshaltthoureturn”(Genesis3.19).

ManyChristianshavesadlybecomeembarrassedaboutthestoryofAdamandEvebecauseoftheapparentconflictwithevolutionarybiology.Butwedonotneedtobecreationiststorecognisethatthisastorywhichhassomethingprofoundtosayaboutthehumancondition,abouttherelationshipsbetweenGod,humanbeingsandcreation.

IwouldcommendthefirstthreechaptersofGenesistoyouifyouarelookingforsomethingtoreflectonduringtheseasonofLent.InthestoryofAdamandEveandtheforbiddenfruit,humanitychoosestakingoverreceiving,andknowingpleasureoverinnocentdelight.Andhumanitycontinuestowalkdownthissamepath,thepathofgrasping,thepathofexploitation,thepathofcomplexity.

ThestoryoftheGardenofEdenandtheTreeoftheKnowledgeofGoodandEvilfindsitsanswerinthestoryoftheGardenofGethsemaneandtheTreeofCalvary;itfindsitsanswerinthelifeanddeathandlifeoftheonewhotakesaradicallydifferentpath,theone“who,thoughhewasintheformofGod,didnotregardequalitywithGodassomethingtobeexploited,butemptiedhimself,takingtheformofaslave,beingborninhumanlikeness.Andbeingfoundinhumanform,hehumbledhimselfandbecameobedienttothepointofdeath–evendeathonacross”(Philippians2.6-8).

Thispathofhumility,simplicityandself-emptyingisthepathtowhichwetooarecalled,anditisthepathtowhichweareparticularlyrecalledduringthisholyseasonofLent.

Soletusprayforthegracetolivelightly,humblyandsimplyinrelationtoGod,eachotherandthewholeofcreation,that,inthewordsofthePrayerbook,“wemaysopassthroughthingstemporal,thatwefinallylosenotthethingseternal”.

Welookforwardtothejudgementoftheinspector,buttheParishandBoroughCouncilscouldnothavedonemoretoopposethisasPegasus,JohnMerkel,NigelWilliamsandMarkPhillipsrepresentedtheParishandLandmark,numerousofficersandspecialistrepresentedtheBorough.

ELECTIONWehaveBoroughelectionsonMay7thwhereRemenham,WargraveandRuscombewillbecontested(myseat).

THAMESBRIDGE HOUSEStillnonews.

ROADS Theroadstookahammeringduringthebadweather.Therecentheavyrainhassetbacktheremedialactionforlargeholesatthesideoftheroadandpatchesofwater.Actionisinhandon(i)extendingthe30mphspeedlimittobeyondtheentrancetoMiddleCulhamCottageandCuldenFawand(ii)makingchangestotheparkingbaysonRemenham,includingtheirsitingandtimerestrictions.

VILLAGE SKIPWeareattemptingtorestartthisinitiative.

JudyPalmerreportedon“TheGreenChallenge”-membershadenteredvariousthingstheyaredoinginfavourofthis.Judyhadcollatedmembers’entriesandenteredtheChallengeCompetition.DaphnereportedaletterhadbeenreceivedaboutthehorrifyingBushfiresinAustralia.Aletterofourdeepestsympathyhadbeensent,andmemberswereaskedtomakeindividualdonations.AfterthebusinessitwastimetohearaboutthefiveResolutionsputforwardfordiscussion.

1)Calltoincreasepotentialstemcelldonorregistration.JudyPalmertookusthroughthis;stemcellsareusedtotreatmanydiseasesi.e.Lymphoma,Leukaemiaandsicklecellanaemia.Thestemcellsareproducedinthebonemarrow.Weareaskedtopersuadetheyoungweknowbetweentheagesof30and60tocontacttheAntonyNolantrustandNHSRegistry.asitissodifficulttofindamatch.Itisnotapainfulprocedure,justlikegivingblood,itjusttakesalittlelonger.JudytoldusofhergrandsonwhowastreatedsuccessfullyforhisHodgkinsonsLymphoma.

2)Femalecrashtestdummies.JenTerryexplainedthatwomenaremorelikelytosufferinjuries,particularlywhiplashandchestimpacts,owingtotheirdifferentphysiquetomen.Volvocarmanufacturersareconstantlycarryingouttestsandupgradingtheirdummies,atacostofhalfamilliondollarsperdummy.Therearepregnancyseatbeltsnow.Somuchworkisbeingdone.

3)EndmodernSlavery.RosemaryPrattsaidhowshockingitisthatintheTwentiethCenturythisslaveryisstillgoingon,eventhoughWilberforceabolishedslaveryin1833.Therearesomanyinstancesofthisfromyounggirlsandboysrecruitedforpedallingdrugs.Richfamiliesrecruitfromabroadforhousemaids,nanniesetc.Theywork24/7andthoughhousedarenotpaidorallowedout.Fruitandvegetablepickersareoftenhousedinencampmentsorevengardenshedsandpaidwellbelowalivingwage.SomanyinstancessuchasThaigirlsrecruitedtoworkinnailbarsetc,andassexslaves.Wewereallaskedtokeepaneyeoutforanythinguntoward,andtoreport.

4)Timetotalkaboutdeathanddying.IreneParkerexplainedthatourBritishsocietyisparticularlybadatdiscussingthis.Shebeggedthatfamiliesshouldbemuchmoreopenabouttalkingaboutarrangementsforendoflifecareandfuneralwishes,sothatwhenthetimecomesfamilieswouldbeprepared,andknowhowtoproceed.

5)ProtectourpreciousHelium.AudreygaveusexcellentinformationaboutHelium;itisacolourless,tastelessandnon-toxicgas,whichcannowaybereproduced,andby2070therewillbenomoreleftintheworld.Verylittlecanbefoundnow,somenaturalgasminesproducealittleontheside,butitcosts£100,000tobuymachinerytostoreit.HeliumisusedinMRIscanners,mobilephones,highspeedTV,airbags,barcodemachines,weatherandasweallknowpartyballoons.Atleastwecanatleasttryandpreventthesaleofpartyballoons,butwhenHeliumrunsoutitwillchangetheworldasweknowit.

Memberswerethengivenvotingslips.ThemajorityvotefromRemenhammemberswasfor‘ProtectourpreciousHelium’.ThiswillgoforwardtotheNationalAGMtobedebatedthere.Membershadverymuchappreciatedallthediscussionsanditprovokedalotofchat.WewerecalledtoordertoenterDaphne’squizwhilethekettleboiledfortea!WhichwasdeliciousandprovidedbyJenTerryandPatSly.OurnextmeetingwillbetheAGMonFebruary10th.

FebruaryRemenhammembersmetthismonthfortheirAGM.WendyRobinsonwaswelcomedtothemeeting.Theafternoonbeganwithadeliciouslunchofhomemadesoupswithcheeseandpate,preparedandservedbymembersofthecommittee.Duringthefollowingmeeting,memberswereremindedtoapplyforticketsfortheNFWIconferenceattheRoyalAlbertHall,aforthcomingWIholidaytoYorkshireandalsofortheSpringAnnualConferenceinReading.

Thefinancialstatementwasapprovedandpassed,aswastheAnnualReport.Thesecretary,IreneParkergavearesumeoftheyear’sactivitieswhichshowedagainthatabusyyearhadbeenenjoyedbyall.Therehadbeenoutingstotheatres,gardencentresaswellasconferencesatReadingandBournemouth.Membershadparticipatedinvariouslunches,craftsessionsandspeakershadrangedfromexperiencesswimmingtheChanneltomicrowavedemonstrations.DonationshadbeenmadetoReadingHospitalintheformof100plusknittedbabyhatsaswellasover100emergencyovernightspongebags.Aswellasbranchcompetitions,otherWIcompetitionswerealsoentered.
