MARCH & APRIL 2017 ATTENDANCE & GENERAL GIVING

NEWSWORTHY NOTES in the lives of St. Mark’s members. Did you ever come up to someone and ask them: “Hey, what’s new?” or, “How are your kids doing?” or, “Did you hear about…?” You might have answered: “We just got back from a tour of all the important spots of the Reformation.” Or, “One of my kids was an exchange student to France, and my other kid just graduated med school and is now a primary doctor.” Or, “Did you hear about Jane’s kid getting a scholarship to Notre Dame?” Yeah, we’re looking for things like that. Maybe your daughter won an award in science. Perhaps your grandson got a scholarship to play football at Penn State. We’re interested (the church office, that is) in hearing about these newsworthy notes for publication in future St. Mark’s newsletters, we’d like to keep the St. Mark’s family informed as to what’s happening in the lives of our family.

SAVE THE DATE: Spring is upon us and so is baseball season. We have tickets available for the Reading. Phillies game on Saturday,

July 22. Cost is $10/each. Reserve your tickets with Kathy in the church office. Each family is responsible for their own transportation.

ALCM CONFERENCE: The American Lutheran Church Musicians will be meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota from July 9 – July 13, Pastor Chuck and Judy Love will be attending. This is the national conference for Lutheran Church Musicians. Various musical workshops are offered as well as workshops on strengthening staff relations. They both hope to bring back some ideas for our worship life at St. Mark’s.

CHURCH COUNCIL will hold their June meeting at Frederick Living on the morning of Saturday, June 24. Besides our regular business

we will also take the time to review some of the things Dawn Harris (Family Ministry Director) and Pastor Chuck learned in their trip to Lexington, Kentucky, back in late February. The focus of that conference was on Children and Youth Ministry, we hope to review what might benefit us here at St. Mark’s. LET’S THROW A PARTY: Pastor Fluck is throwing himself a birthday party on Saturday, July 15, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM, in the Social Room at St. Mark’s. Good food is promised as family and friends will enjoy a pig roast (done by our very own Mark Kern).

JUNE/JULY 2017 REMARKS FROM ST. MARKS PAGE 3

“INMATE FOOTBALL” Earlier this year I was shopping at my local grocery store for a few items. I was behind a young woman who was about to pay for her groceries. She went to use her debit card and it was denied, not once, but three times. Finally, the cashier asked: Do you have any cash on you?” “No,” replied the woman. “Then may I suggest you go the nearby Univest and ask what the problem might be?” With that the woman hurriedly left the store, without her groceries, and a look of deep embarrassment on her face. After looking at her groceries, I ask the cashier, “How much did she owe?” Replied the cashier, “About $40.” I handed her the $40 sand said, “I have a feeling she’ll be back, and still might not be able to pay for the groceries.” I left not thinking much

about the incident until I returned to the same store two days later. A few of the employees recognize me. One approached me and said, “The young woman whom you paid $40 for her groceries, she came back. There was insufficient funds in her account, and she wanted to apologize. When I told her you paid for them, she started to cry. The groceries were for her and her two kids. She didn’t have any food in the house for dinner that night or breakfast the following morning.” At the Mother/Daughter Banquet last month, I sat across from Pastor Paul Bartlett and his wife Ruthann and next to Pastor Fluck. We three clergy got to talking about how we all had a file that we would throw stories into, stories that we thought would one day be useful for a sermon illustration or an article- such as a newsletter. Well, I came across one in my file: “Inmate Football”.

In the fall of 2008, there was an unusual high school football game played in Grapevine, Texas. The game was between Grapevine Faith Academy and Gainesville State School. Faith is a Christian school and Gainesville State School is located within a maximum security correction facility. Gainesville State School has 14 players. They play every game on the road. Their record 0-8. They have scored twice. Their 14 players were teenagers who had been convicted of crimes ranging from drugs to assault to robbery. Most had families who had disowned them. They wore outdated, used shoulder pads and helmets. Faith Academy’s record was 7-2. They had 70 players, 11 coaches and the latest equipment. Chris Hogan, the head coach of Faith Academy, knew the Gainesville team would have no fans and it would be no contest, so he thought. “What if half of our fans and half of our cheerleaders, for one night only, cheered for the other team?” He sent out an e-mail to the faithful asking them to do just that. “Here’s the message I want you to send,” Hogan wrote, “You’re just as valuable as any other person on the planet.” Some folks were confused and thought he was joking. One player said, “Coach, why are we doing this?” Hogan said, “Imagine you don’t have a home life, no one to love you, no one pulling for you. Now, imagine what it would feel like and mean to you for hundreds of people to suddenly believe in you.” The idea took root. On the night of the game, imagine the surprise of those 14 players when they took the field and there was a banner the cheerleaders had made for them to crash through. The visitors’ stands were full. The cheerleaders were leading cheer for them. The fans were calling them by their names. Isaiah, the quarterback/middle linebacker said, “I never in my life thought I would hear parents cheering to tackle and hit their kid. Most of the time, when we come out, people are afraid of us. You can see it in their

eyes, but these people are yelling for us. They knew our names.” Faith won the game, and after the game, the teams gathered at the 50-yard line to pray. That’s when Isaiah, the teenage convict quarterback surprised everybody and asked if he could pray and he prayed, “Lord, I don’t know what just happened so I don’t know how or who to say thank you to, but I never knew there were so many people in the world who cared about us.” On the way back home to the bus, under guard, each one of the players was handed a burger, fries, a coke, candy, a Bible and an encouraging letter from the players of Faith Academy. What an incredible act of Christian witness and kindness and goodness that was. Proverbs 11:17 says, “…your own soul is nourished when you are kind.” Proverbs 3:27 says, “Do not withhold good when it is in your power to act.” Summer is soon to be “officially” upon us. Many of us will be traveling over the next 10-12 weeks, meeting a lot of people. Or, if you’re staying close to home, that’s just fine. The important thing to remember is to be kind to someone. Be kind to every person you meet. You might be surprised at what God will do with a simple act of kindness. “…And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8 Think about it.

Congratulations to our 2017 Confirmation Class! The following nine young persons will take a greater responsibility in the life of St. Mark’s by affirming their baptism – Carly Lynn Althouse,

Jacob Cole Bardsley, Laura Michaela Cooney, Alex Thomas Gallo, Lindsey Jean Henry, Megan Kathleen Long, Connor Allen Mack, Sydney Stauffer Putera and Trent Michael Theoret.

ROAD TO THE REFORMATION: “Luther’s Struggle to Find Peace with God” Young Brother Martin fully dedicated himself to monastic life, the effort to do good works to please God and serve others through prayer for their souls. Yet peace with God escaped him. He devoted himself to fasts, flagellations, long hours in prayer and pilgrimages, and constant confession. The more he tried to do for God, it seemed, the more aware he became of his sinfulness. Johann von Staupitz, Luther’s superior, concluded the young man needed more work to distract him from pondering himself. He ordered the monk to pursue an academic career. In 1507 Luther was ordained to the priesthood. In 1508 he began teaching theology at the University of Wittenberg. Luther earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biblical studies on March 9, 1508 and a Bachelor’s degree in the Sentences by Peter Lombard, (the main textbook of theology in the Middle Ages) in 1509. On October 19, 1512, the University of Wittenberg conferred upon Martin Luther the degree of Doctor of Theology.

ST. MARK’S REMEMBERED IN MEMBER’S WILL: Patricia “Pat” Aiello, who died in April., left $50,000 to St. Mark’s in her will. Pastor Chuck officiated the funeral in Alanson, Michigan. Judith Love and Diane Mohr also attended. Many of you might recall that Pat was active in the music ministry here at St. Mark’s. She sang in the Adult Choir, played in the Hand Bell Choir, and played piano accompaniment for the Children & Youth Choirs. Pat made sure her daughter and son played instruments growing up. Today, her daughter Linnea plays violin in a symphony out in California. Music was Pat’s passion. Her vocation was an operating nurse at Pottstown Memorial Hospital, where she was dedicated and faithful to the patients who were in her care. After discussion with Pastor Chuck, Judy and Diane before they returned home, and with Church Council’s permission, it was decided to create the “Patricia Aiello Music & Nursing Scholarship”. Beginning in the academic school year of 2017-2018, “active” St. Mark’s members, those starting or continuing their education, may apply for the scholarship - either in music or in nursing. “Active” means having made a record of contribution to the church and a record of communing. Failure to perform these two items will result in the application being denied. Members are not permitted to apply to both scholarships in the same calendar year - the above and the one awarded from the Endowment Fund. Church Council wishes to extend its deepest appreciation to the Aiello Family for allowing us to use Pat’s generous gift in the education of St. Mark’s members. Pat is survived by her husband Peter, children Linnea and Joseph and their spouses, three grandchildren, sisters, mother-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

St. Mark’s is compiling a list of 2017 High School and College Graduates. If you have a loved one graduating this year, please contact the church office

or speak with Pastor Chuck.

GOD’S SPEED TO THE LAMPES: Easter Sunday was the last time Dick and Barb sang with St. Mark’s Adult Choir. They moved to Bethlehem, and they will be missed. The Lampes brought their musical gifts to St. Mark’s nearly 19 years ago, and we have been blessed ever since. They still plan to be a part of the valley as they look to continue sing with The Valley Choral Society, started by Dick. Occasionally, they plan to come back and visit St. Mark’s.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Once again, St. Mark’s will offer scholarships from the interest from our Endowment account. They will

be made available to students who are active members of our congregation and who will be starting or continuing their education in the fall of 2017. “Active” means having made a record of contribution to the church and a record of communing. Failure to perform these two items will result in the application being denied. Scholarship applications may be picked up in the church office (Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM) or the secretary’s mailbox in the library/lounge. The completed applications are to be returned to the church office no later than Sunday, July 9th. Scholarship are available to all active members no matter what your age.

We welcome Gail Fleck, as a new member. Gail has grown up in the valley and returned in 2013 after living in

Perkasie. She enjoys traveling, gardening and golf. Welcome back to St. Mark’s - George, Joanne & Kevin Wentling. George is now retired and Joanne works for the Upper Perk Police Department. Welcome back to St. Mark’s Church, Barbara Ann Scholl. Barbara lives in Pennsburg, married to David, has grown children and now is enjoying arts, crafts, cooking, baking, walking, traveling and gardening in her retirement years. She is friends with Harriet Rapine. She is also a member of the Senior Center Red Hat Group. God bless you Barbara!

Pat always had a special place in her heart for St. Mark’s and the entire community there around Pennsburg. That is why she included the $50,000 donation to St. Mark’s from her estate. Pat and I are honored by your idea to setup a scholarship for both music and nursing in her name. Sincerely Pete Aiello
