Leo Delibes Zeitgenosse Tchaikovsky kommentierte, dass er sich nie getraut hätte den Schwanensee zu schreiben, wäre ihm Sylvia bereits bekannt gewesen. Wie man dies bei einer Reference-Recordings-Aufnahme erwarten darf, ist sie opulent gelungen und Keith Johnson gibt dem Zuhörer das Gefühl, in der Mitte eines großen Konzertsaals zu sitzen. Eine akustische Illusion, die umso beeindruckender ist, da die Aufnahme bei Skywalker Sound im Studio und eben nicht in einem klassischen Konzertsaal entstand. ENSEMBLE BAROQUE NOUVEAU Rameau: Pièces de clavecin en concerts RR 118HDCDIm Jahre 1741 veröffentlichte der Franzose Jean-Philippe Rameau fünf Konzerte für Cembalo in denen der den Begleitmusikern auf Violine, Flöte und Gamba deutlich mehr Freiraum gab, als es für ihre ursprünglich begleitende Rolle notwendig wäre. Für die Gamba ließ er sogar technisch unmögliche Noten einfließen. Eine Aufforderung an die Musiker in gemeinsamer Kommunikation mit dieser Herausforderung umzugehen. Die Truppe von Baroque Noeveau nimmt diese Herausforderung an. Passend zur damaligen Art Musik zu machen, in der die Musiker gemeinsam hinter dem Cembalo standen und alle aus der Partitur des Cembalisten lesen konnten, reicht ein Nicken, um eine Variation oder Improvisation vorzunehmen. JAZZ KALEIDOSCOPE Sampler RR 910HDCDDas Label Reference Recordings präsentiert hier den zweien Jazz Sampler in seiner Geschichte. JUNKIN, JERRY & DALLAS WIND SYMPHONY Percy Granger: Lincolnshire RR 117HDCDDie Dallas Wind Symphony unter der Leitung von Jerry Junkin ist Amerikas einziges Vollzeit-Blasorchester. Kaum ein anderes Orchester könnte sich den Werken des australischen Musikers und Komponisten mit einer Vorliebe für alternative Instrumentierungen so eindrucksvoll widmen. Besonders seine Vorstellung von möglichst großen Besetzungen mit eben so großer Spielfreude ließen sich hervorragend umsetzen. Auch seine Anweisungen nach doppelter Paukenbesetzung und Sonderinstrumenten wie einem tiefer gestimmten Glockenspiel wurden befolgt. Percy Grainger (1882-1961) lässt sich am einfachsten als sehr individuelle Persönlichkeit beschreiben. Trotz klassischer musikalischer Ausbildung in Deutschland verfolgte er die Idee einer volkstümlichen und nordisch geprägten Musik. Er sammelte mit Hingabe lokales Liedgut und machte Aufnahmen auf Wachzylindern um die feinen Nuancen in den nur mündlich überlieferten Stücken einfangen zu können. In späteren Jahren entwickelte er seinen eigenen Musikstil und seine experimentelle Verwendung von Instrumenten gewagt weiter. So konnte ein Blasorchester durchaus zusätzlich mit Piano und Harfe besetzt werden und Saxophone treten am Besten nur als große Gruppe auf. Die vorliegende Aufnahme wurde durch "Prof." Keith Johnson im August 2008 in Dallas, Texas im Meyerson Symhony Center volldigital aufgenommen. STERN, MICHAEL & KANSAS CITY SYMPHONY Britten's Orchestra RR 120HDCDDies ist das zweite Werk welches "Prof." Johnson von der Kansas City Symphony aufnimmt und dieses Mal hat man sich mit dem Community of Christ Auditorium in Independence, Missouri einen spektakulären Ort für den gleichfalls spektakulären Klang des Orchesters ausgesucht. Drei Werke von Benjamin Britten stehen auf dem Programm und die Wahl viel auf drei sehr unterschiedliche Stücke des wohl bekanntesten britischen Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. The Young Person's Guide to Orchestra wurde als Auftragswerk von Britten mit damals erst 31 Jahren geschrieben. Es sollte die Musik zu einem Dokumentarfilm sein, der die Instrumente eines modernen symphonischen Orchesters vorstellt. Britten bearbeitete hiefür ein Thema von Henry Purcell aus dem Jahr 1695. Sowohl im Film als auch in den ersten Orchesteraufführungen gab es noch einen Sprecher, der jedoch mit zunehmender Popularität des Werkes heute nicht mehr auftritt. Das Thema wird zuerst vom gesamten Orchester gespielt und dann in 13 Variationen durch die einzelnen Orchestersegmente interpretiert bevor wieder das gesamte Orchester spielt. Dies sind die einzelnen musikalischen Stationen: 1. Flöte, Querflöte und Harfe 2. Oboen 3. Klarinetten 4. Fagotte 5. Violinen 6. Bratschen 7. Celli 8. Kontrabässe 9. Harfe 10. Hörner 11.
