AMERICAN RED CROSS, ROTA NEWSLETTER JUNE 2014
HOLA ROTA!
Become an American Red Cross Rota Volunteer Today!!
The American Red Cross Rota volunteer orientation is the first Wednesday of each
month, from 12-1 pm. Orientation is held in the Community Support Building, Bldg.
3293. Come to the Red Cross office and we will get you signed in and direct you to the
classroom. Due to the holiday, July’s orientation will be held July 9th.
At orientation you will learn about all the exciting volunteer opportunities the Red
Cross offers. We are currently looking for a new Chair of Volunteers (COV). The
COV is a volunteer management position that directly supervises the other volunteers
and works under the direction and supervision of the
Station Chairman. This person will engage with the
local community to establish volunteer opportuni-
ties and to place volunteers. We also have volun-
teer positions available at DGF and on our special
events committee. Come to orientation to find out
about these exciting opportunities and more!

The question posed is ‘why do I volunteer?” I would reply with “why not?”
To start at the beginning: I followed my husband’s US Navy career and worked as a Civil Service Nurse in the Naval Hospitals wher-ever we were stationed. During those years I was blessed -over and over again –and built a professionally rewarding career as a Regis-tered Nurse and Nationally Certified Diabetes Educator. Those years also included volunteering with the American Red Cross as a CPR Instructor, ACLS Instructor, HIV Prevention Instructor, and
I worked with the American Red Cross Blood Services in Miami on a Mobile Blood Donation Team. My allegiance to the American Red Cross is very strong and deep rooted. I love being able to help people learn important skills applicable to their lives , their families, and their careers!
When my husband (now a retired Commander, but still working for the Navy) received orders to come to Rota, Spain, I had just retired from my Civil Service position, but knew that “there must be a Red Cross Office on the base. Where I can help out.” After we arrived I sought out what type of position they might need my services for. The Military Diabetes Educator had just been transferred, and there was a need to continue assisting with the patients with diabetes (Active Duty, Dependents, and Retired) that are seen at the hospital. “Fine,” I said, “at least there will be no learning curve for me!” I was thrilled and began volunteering as the diabetes Educator once a week as soon as my credentials arrived from my previous position.
I serve as a Red Cross Volunteer RN, CDE at Naval Hospital Rota, Spain, and have been there for the past four years. The time has flown by, and I have met so many inter-esting people with Diabetes! Nothing gratifies me more than being able to coach a pa-tient to “see the light” and finally realize that they CAN manage their disease! The smile on their faces when they see those results makes it all so worth it! There is so much we now know about Diabetes and how to manage it, and I am grateful for the privilege of being able to pass on that information to others who need it.
My Mom always said, “to whom much is given, much will be expected.” Certainly it is my time to “give back” and I am happy and proud to do that as a volunteer !

WHY I VOLUNTEER Barbara Neslson, American Red Cross Hospital Volunteer
We are proud to announce the newest member of the
American Red Cross Rota leadership team, Publicity Chair
Lars Engeberg. Lars brings extensive public relations ex-
perience to the position. He works in NCTAMS as a Work
Center Supervisor and serves as the Command Public Affair
Officer. He previously served as the Command MWR
President.
A member of the leadership team dedicated to publicity will
help our station to improve community outreach and improve communications with our
volunteers. As we move into a new fiscal year, we are excited to focus on participating
in more community events and educating the community about our American Red
Cross Programs. Lars will help us to promote these events, programs and more. Look
for improvements to our Facebook page, newsletter, articles in the Coastline, listen for
Lars on AFN and more!
When he is not working, serving the community, or spending time with his wife and two
daughters, Lars enjoys photography, videography, snowboarding, rackeball and SCUBA
diving. Please help us in welcoming Lars to the team!
WELCOME TO THE TEAM: LARS ENGEBERG
I love Spain in July. I live by the water, so I get to see lots of people hanging out at the
beach. Everybody is having so much fun! But sometimes, when we have fun, we forget
the negative effect that ultraviolet (UV) rays can have on our skin. According to the
Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), melanoma is one of most fatal skin
cancers and it is largely caused by UV light exposure.
Did you know that skin damage could happen within 15 minutes of exposure to UV
rays? Even if it is cloudy! Regardless of whether the UV rays exposure causes a suntan
or sunburn, the skin is being damaged. The CDC recommends that we use a broad
spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with a minimum SPF 15, and that we reapply it every
2 hours or after getting wet.
For more tips regarding UV protection visit the CDC at http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/
dcpc/resources/features/SkinCancer/
Till next month!

VOLUNTEER RECOGINTION 2014
The American Red Cross Rota hosted its Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner on
Friday June 13th. The dinner, held at Shamrocks Bar and Eatery, was a special eve-
ning of appreciation for the outstanding Red Cross Volunteers making a difference
everyday in the NASTA Community.
As our Fiscal Year comes to a close we would like to take this time to thank our volunteers
and the NASTA community for their support throughout the last year. The generosity of
our volunteers and the community made our Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner possible.
It has been a phenomenal year for the American Red Cross Rota and we look forward to
continued growth of the station and our programs in the 2014-2015 fiscal year!
