Initial system: Energy density

For central Au+Au at 200 MeV the approximatelyequilibrated system will have an energy density of > 3 GeV/fm~

3

Even this conservative estimate is already 6 times higherthan the energy density inside a nucleon and 20 timeshigher than the energy density inside the nucleusThis estimate is also at least 2 times higher than theenergy density reached at SPS

The created system cannot be described appropriatelyin terms of simple hadronic degrees of freedom

Baryon chemical potential

From the deduced baryon chemical potential of 27 MeV forAu+Au at 200 MeV (which is an order of magnitude lowerthan the baryon chemical potential for the SPS Pb+Pb at17.2 GeV) it is clear that we are approaching a net baryon free regime

Strongly interacting medium: Elliptic flow

Over a large range of centrality andtransverse momentum the ellipticflow signal is strong

The signal is very close to what canbe expected from a relativistichydrodynamical calculation

Strong interactions in initialoverlap zone to imprint the initialshape on the elliptic flow signal

Interactions must happen at earlytimes, otherwise the expansion willwash out the initial overlap shape < 2 fm/c

Strongly interacting medium: Low Pt

There is no excess of low Pt particles as one would expect froma weakly interacting medium(note: measuring this excess was one of the major PHOBOS baseline physics objectives)

Even at low Pt the elliptic flowsignal remains relativily strong

No coherent production of low Ptparticles as they get 'accelerated'by the strong interactions with thehigh energy density medium

Strongly interacting medium: High Pt Au+Au at 200 and 62.4 GeV

How effective is each binarycollision for inducing a hardscattering process?

Au+Au at 200 GeV shows a strongsuppression of high Pt particlesAt 62.4 GeV there seems to be lesssuppression, but this could be because of the interplay of theCronin effect, radial flow, suppression, etc.

Is high Pt suppression an initial or a final state effect?

Page 13: Recent results from PHOBOS · Recent results from PHOBOS Gerrit van Nieuwenhuizen For the PHOBOS collaboration SQM 2004 Capetown, September 14, 2004 ... Heinz Pernegger, Corey Reed,

Strongly interacting medium: High Pt d+Au at 200 GeV

d+Au at 200 GeV shows no highPt suppression

The high Pt suppression in Au+Auis a final state effect

With high certainty the suppresionof high Pt particles in Au+Au is caused by their strong interactionwith the high energy densitymedium

A word of caution

A difference was found betweenthe strength of the nuclear modification factor for d+Aubetween PHOBOS and the otherRHIC experiments

Recent BRAHMS and PHOBOSresults indicate that this difference is caused by the

ηdependence of R

(very recent STAR and PHENIX results point to the sameexplanation)

Strongly interacting high energy density medium

Strong elliptic flow signal observed

No low transverse momentum particle excess

Close to reaching net baryon-free regime

High Pt suppresion through final state interactions

Strong evidence for the creation of a very high energy density, relativily net baryon-free, mediumwhich cannot simply be described in terms ofhadrons and whose constituents experience significant interactions with each other

Scaling behaviours of particle production

Let's play with the extensive datasetthat we have accumulated

Centrality dependence of total multiplicity

Total charged particle multiplicity is proportional to the number of participant pairsand is proportional to the number of participating nucleonsin Au+Au at the three energies shown

'Appropriate' means to takeeffective energy of p+p tocompensate for energy takenaway by leading proton

Longitudinal scaling: Charged particle distributions

Like pp also d+Au and Au+Auexhibits extensive longitudinal scaling(limiting fragmentation)

Longitudinal scaling: FlowElliptic flow shows a limitingbehaviour reminiscent of thelimiting behaviour for chargedparticle production

Since elliptic flow is believed tooriginate early in the collision(< 2 fm/c) this longitudinal scalingprobably also happens relativilyearly in the collision

The triangle shape of the distributions (lack of a boostinvariant plateau) will be a challenge to explain(note: in the final particle rapidity distributions there is also no boost invariant plateau visible)
