Twentieth Century Impressions of Burma is part of a series on the British Empirethat deals with the empire’s history, people, commerce, industries, andresources. This publication is one of a now lengthy series, designed to give aliterary survey of the various component parts of the British Empire and ofleading countries in which British capital was extensively invested, or in whichBritish political interests were centered. (Twentieth Century Impressions of Siamwas also reprinted by White Lotus.) Burma at one time formed an integral part ofBritain’s Indian empire, but it was something more than an Indian province. Itsgeographical position, with a frontier that marches with the boundaries of theChinese Empire and of French Indochina, a mighty waterway that gives access tothe vast mountain regions of the great Asiatic range, and a coastline thatstretches for 1,200 miles along the eastern side of the Bay of Bengal, is one ofexceptional importance, and that importance increased as the inevitabledevelopment of the great continental railway system of Asia brought the ports ofthe Straits of Malacca into direct communication with India, and eventuallythrough India with the countries of Europe. These prophetic words are more truetoday than hundred years ago. In this work, an attempt has been made to dealexhaustively with every phase of Burmese life. The history of the country is fullytreated, and graphic pictures are presented by exceptional writers of the religiousand social life of this, perhaps most fascinating people of Asia who owedallegiance to Britain. The administration, law, and finance of Burma are dealt withby experts; a full account is also given of the commerce, industries, and socialaspects of everyday life, while clear and interesting descriptions are furnished ofthe principal population centers of the country. The book’s illustrations, reproductions of hundreds of photographs, are exceptionally varied andinteresting, particularly viewing them from a modern perspective.http://www.marymartin.com/web?pid=178679-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Japanese Era Rangoon General Hospital : Memoir of a Wartime Physician /Wunna Kyaw-Htin & Dr. Myint Swe (Translated) Zarny TunMyanmar Book Centre Co., Ltd.,Myanmar 2014xxvi, 276p.Includes Index9789997185297$ 30.00 / PB302 gm.

First, horse-drawntrams appeared in 1888. But as horse-drawn trams were not very suitable in thetropics, they were replaced in 1893 by electric trams. (In that same year, theFrench attacked Siam in what became known as the Paknam Incident.) Theresulting electric tram company, with its own generators, was one of the oldest inSoutheast Asia. The Dutch introduced trams in Batavia (Jakarta) in 1869.Singapore followed in July 1905, after having experimented with electrictramways in 1891 and 1892. In 1893, Bangkok had a population of 250,000. Thetrams became quite popular with the people. The author made new drawings ofall the tram lines. He has located the best information available on the electrictram cars, as the archives are poor. In the 1960s, trams became obsolete asbuses took over. A renewal program of the rolling stock and new kinds of tramcars came too late. Buses were already duplicating the tram lines. The Thais likedto follow the American model, favoring road traffic over rail traffic. But now, realizing that this is not an ideal solution, Skytrain and subway lines are beingbuilt in Bangkok.http://www.marymartin.com/web?pid=179608-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Masked : The Life of Anna Leonowens, Schoolmistress at the Court of Siam /Alfred HabeggerSilkworm Books, Thailand 2014xii, 544p.Includes Index ; Selected Bibliography9786162151057$ 34.75 / PB630 gm.

A brave British widow goes to Siam and—by dint of her principled andindomitable character—inspires that despotic nation to abolish slavery andabsolute rule: this appealing legend first took shape after the Civil War whenAnna Leonowens came to America from Bangkok and succeeded in becoming acelebrity author and lecturer. Three decades after her death, in the 1940s and1950s, the story would be transformed into a powerful Western myth by MargaretLandon’s best-selling book Anna and the King of Siam and Rodgers andHammerstein’s musical The King and I.

But who was Leonowens and why did her story take hold? Alfred Habegger, anaward-winning biographer, draws on the archives of five continents and recentThai-language scholarship to disclose the complex person behind the mask andthe troubling facts behind the myth. He also ponders the curious fit betweenLeonowens’s compelling fabrications and the New World’s innocent dreams —inparticular the dream that democracy can be spread through quick and easyinterventions.

Exploring the full historic complexity of what it once meant to pass as white,Masked pays close attention to Leonowens’s midlevel origins in British India, hereducation at a Bombay charity school for Eurasian children, her material andsocial milieu in Australia and Singapore, the stresses she endured in Bangkok asa working widow, the latent melancholy that often afflicted her, the problematicaspects of her self-invention, and the welcome she found in America, where acircle of elite New England abolitionists who knew nothing about Southeast Asiagave her their uncritical support. Her embellished story would again captureAmerica’s imagination as World War II ended and a newly interventionist UnitedStates looked toward Asia.http://www.marymartin.com/web?pid=176730-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Abubakar Imam Memoirs- 2nd ed / (Ed) Abdurrahman MoraNorthern Nigerian Publishing Company Ltd., Nigeria 2011xviii, 348p.Includes Index ; Bibliography9789781693071$ 37.50 / PB382 gm.
