Totalitarianism, what is it?

Page 3: RECAP, why are these relevant?

We know that:

Germany and Italy are not in good shape

The Treaty of Versailles really screwed them

Dictatorship is on the Rise mainly because they appeal to the publics wants

They ensure dominance through oppression

So far

The Causes of WWII& Nazi expansion during the 1930s

Page 6: RECAP, why are these relevant?

Hitler was an extremely popular leader While the rest of the world was going

through the great depression, Hitler offered his people good jobs (building weapons and Highways), a strong economy, social programs (like free vacations), ethnic price and a national purpose.

Hitler specifically targets children and brings Nazism to schools and creates mandatory after school programs

Even Germans who felt uncomfortable with all the militarism, propaganda, rallies and racial hatred (towards Jews and others) supported Hitler because life was better with him in power

Hitler seduces the German People

Page 7: RECAP, why are these relevant?

HITLER WASN’T A GENIUS! The truth is that Germany was heading towards economic disaster. Don't ever listen to people who say otherwise!

That being said

Page 14: RECAP, why are these relevant?

#1:Let’s talk about Propaganda

Why is propaganda important? Well…

1) It masks the truth (ex: Cake)2) It spreads the word3) It is effective4) It sticks

Propaganda is usually:

5) Repetitious 6) Simple 7) Image based8) Sentimental

Page 15: RECAP, why are these relevant?

Many forms of propaganda Some people believe that advertising is a form of

propaganda as it aims to persuade people to buy a certain product to make them feel a certain way. Propaganda is communication for the purpose of persuasion so they are linked in some way

But we will talk about political propaganda

Page 16: RECAP, why are these relevant?

Fear (safety of their jobs, their children, the fate of their country, stereotypes)

Charisma

Most importantly: He appealed to the interests and problems of the German people

Page 24: RECAP, why are these relevant?

You’re completely right

WHY DID HE WANT TO INFLUENCE GERMANY’S YOUTH?

Page 25: RECAP, why are these relevant?

HOW ABOUT THIS ONE?

Page 26: RECAP, why are these relevant?

IN POWER, WHAT NOW?

TO ENSURE POWER HE NEEDS TO…

Page 27: RECAP, why are these relevant?

According to the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was to have a tiny army (100,000 men), no navy & no air force

Hitler immediately broke the treaty by spending millions on weapons production and development

He warship and aircraft production was kept top secret

He created an army of “workers” that were trained like soldiers

REBUILD THE GERMAN MILITARY

Page 28: RECAP, why are these relevant?

SO HE’S GOT AN ARMY… WHAT DO YOU THINK HE DOES?

A) SET DEFENSES, LOCKS GERMANY DOWN

B) DECIDES HES DONE RULING A COUNTRY AND GOES BACK TO VIENNA TO PAINT

C) INVADES THE RHINELAND?

Page 29: RECAP, why are these relevant?

The Rhineland is the German border with France

As part of the Treaty of Versailles the Germany Army could not enter this area

The Saar Region was occupied by the French as part of the treaty

Hitler moved the German army into the Rhineland and the Saar Region in 1935

France did nothing The German people were very

excited and Hitler gained further support

Germany invades the Rhineland and the Saar Region:

Page 30: RECAP, why are these relevant?

THE MAN’S ONLY GETTING STARTED

Page 31: RECAP, why are these relevant?

Called the “ANSCHLUSS” or Union

Taking advantage of a weak Austrian government and a poor and humiliated Austrian people, Germany invades Austria and takes the country without firing a shot

Austria became part of Germany and Austrians were expected to call themselves Germans

Germany Unifies with Austria

Page 32: RECAP, why are these relevant?

In 1938, Hitler claims that German speaking people in the Sudetenland (part of Czechoslovakia) were being mistreated

Hitler threatens to invade to save these people An international conference is called Only France, Britain, Italy and Germany are invited Britain and France decide to persuade Czechoslovakia

into giving Germany the Sudetenland in exchange for a promise of peace

This was known as “Appeasement” or “giving in to the demands of others”

Hitler breaks his promise immediately and invades the rest of Czechoslovakia

Then, the Appeasement

Page 33: RECAP, why are these relevant?

PEACE IN OUR TIME!

Hitler wanted access to East Prussia (part of Germany that had been cut off from the rest of the country)

This was because of the “Polish Corridor” a path cut through Germany which gave Poland access to the ocean

Poland denied Germany access

Hitler invaded on Sept 1, 1939

England and France finally step in and declare war against Germany

The Invasion of Poland

Page 36: RECAP, why are these relevant?

WAR IS DECLARED
