Corporations best demonstrate social responsibility by introducing products with environmental benefi ts for customers. MAPEI operates under a “continuous innovation” strategy to develop technologies that deliver those benefi ts.

Dust-Free Technology is the latest innovation from MAPEI’s global research and development laboratories. It enables MAPEI to produce powdered mortars, grouts and other cementitious products with a considerable reduction in dust levels. Performance testing has shown that up to 90% less dust is produced during pouring, mixing and use of MAPEI products manufactured with Dust-Free Technology.

“We are eager to work with this new technology,” said Dr. Neil McMurdie, R&D Director for MAPEI Americas. “Our goal is to add Dust-Free Technology to as many of our cementitious products as possible. Of course, our main focus is to ensure that Dust-Free Technology does not signifi cantly change any of the working characteristics of MAPEI’s products. Our goal is to integrate this new technology into the same product performance and add the major benefi t of a cleaner job site for installers and property owners.”

The fi rst MAPEI Americas product to benefi t from Dust-Free Technology is a standard in the industry – Ultrafl ex™ 2 polymer-modifi ed, thin-set mortar. “In order to make Dust-Free Technology available to the largest number of installers, we chose our most widely used mortar as the initial launch product,” said Jeff Leone, Director of Strategic Marketing. “The benefi ts are tremendous.” Installers will fi nd dust-free Ultrafl ex 2 on distributors’ shelves during the fourth quarterof 2007.

Knowthe newindustrycodeUser-friendly logic behindISO 13007 product classifications

Part 2:F, T, E, S and P:Special Performance CharacteristicsThis is the second of a 3-part Realta MAPEI Americas series that helps explain the logic behind the ISO 13007 product classifi cation letters. The fi rst article explored the three different classes of tile and stone adhesives. It further defi ned product performance as either 1 (normal) or 2 (improved).

Based on chemical makeup, adhesives fall under the following classifi cations:• C = Cementitious adhesives (mortars)• D = Dispersion adhesives (mastics)• R = Reaction resin adhesives (epoxies and urethanes)

To read the fi rst article in this series, published in Issue 05 of Realta MAPEI Americas, click on the Realta MAPEI icon atwww.mapei.com.

Every adhesive is classifi ed as either cementitious, dispersion or reactive resin. However, some additional (optional) performance characteristics may or may not apply to a particular adhesive. This article will explain the letters F, T, E, S and P – better known as ISO 13007’s Special Performance Characteristics – along with comparing these classifi cations to current ANSI standards:

• F = Fast-setting (cementitious adhesives) or fast-drying (dispersion adhesives)• E = Extended open time• T = Slip (or sag) resistance • S = Deformability (cementitious adhesives)• P = Adhesion to exterior-grade plywood

‘F’ is for ‘fast-setting’and ‘fast-drying’Today’s job sites, which demand quick turnaround, require fast-setting adhesives for optimizing early bond strength and meeting fast-track construction schedules. Such adhesives are especially essential for tile installations in colder climates and areas with high foot traffi c (such as airports and busy shopping malls).

For dispersion adhesives (mastics), which dry from the center of the tile out through the grout joints, the “F” characteristic can be crucial. Dispersion adhesives are most often used for interior wall installations involving larger-sized and/or impervious tile. Moisture in these conditions has more diffi culty escaping, ultimately requiring more time for the mastic to dry. In such cases, fast-setting dispersion adhesives are the best choice for installation success.

For installations on fast-track construction schedules such as malls and airports, fast-setting adhesives that optimize earlybond strength (F) are critical.

Realtá MAPEI Americas ISSUE 06, 2007 5

The current ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standards set a minimum requirement for fast-setting adhesives. They require 50 psi (0,34 MPa) shear bond strength (similar to tensile bond strength of 17 psi [0,12 MPa]) at 4 hours, and 200 psi (1,38 MPa) shear bond strength (similar to tensile bond strength of 72.5 psi [0,5 MPa]) at 7 days. However, the ISO 13007 standards require 72.5 psi (0,5 MPa) tensile bond strength both at 4 to 6 hours, and at 7 days.

The logic behind the more stringent ISO 13007 standards lies in the fact that tiles could lose bond if tensile bond strength is only 17 psi (0,12 MPa). The minimum tensile bond strength requirement for ISO ensures that installers will experience a failure-free installation, given that the entire tile installation should achieve full tensile-bond-strength requirements (equal to 28-day strengths) within four hours.

‘E’ is for ‘extended open time’“Extended open time” is the maximum open time in which the tile can be laid into the adhesive without loss of minimum bond strength. Extended open times for mortars are highly desirable when installing tile in drier climates, in exterior applications where windy conditions often prevail, for installations involving intricate tile patterns and when installing very large-sized tile that require more time for adjusting grout lines.

Furthermore, the more porous the substrate and the more absorptive the tile, the less time an installer has to lay tile. While a typical mortar may result in loss of bond, an extended-open-time mortar that is formulated with additional moisture will give the installer the necessary time to achieve optimal bond.

Although the ANSI standards do require testing for open time, no designation exists for extended open time. The ISO addition of the “E” characteristic extends the open time of a C1 adhesive (tensile bond strength of 72.5 psi [0,5 MPa]) or C2 adhesive (tensile bond strength of 145 psi [1 MPa]) from 20 minutes to 30 minutes while still meeting the ISO 13007 tensile bond strength requirements. The testing is actually performed over concrete and plywood, the most typical substrates used in today’s flooring installations.

‘T’ is for ‘slip resistance’In vertical tile and stone applications, sag resistance is essential. This characteristic becomes even more important when nonabsorbent tile materials like glass, porcelain and metal are used, as they all inhibit the mortar’s ability to hydrate and reach full cure quickly, before potentially sagging.

While some sag testing is conducted by ANSI, there is no numerical value with which to measure sag. According to ANSI A118.4, it is up to the manufacturer to establish nonsag criteria for the adhesive. On the other hand, ISO 13007 standards require that slip-resistant adhesives not allow a tile to slip more than 0,5 mm (0.02") when applied on a vertical surface. A “T”-rated mortar is ideal for today’s trend toward large-format vertical tile and stone installations.

‘S’ is for ‘deformability’ When it comes to cementitious adhesives, the ISO 13007 standards define deformability as the mortar’s ability to accommodate varying movements between the tile and substrate, without losing bond. An example of this movement is when the entire tile or stone installation is subjected to the effects of load, deflection and movement, commonly known as“curvature.” This is unlike the ANSI standards, which distinguish cementitious mortars only as polymer-modified (ANSI A118.4) or nonpolymer-modified (ANSI A118.1). Unlike ANSI, the ISO 13007 standards consider the adhesive’s actual performance.

Due to changes in acceptable building practices, buildings are being constructed with more and more lightweight materials and engineered substrates. This results in a growing number of deformable substrates.

For vertical tile installations involving glass, metal or porcelain, a slip-resistant or T adhesive is essential. ISO 13007 requires that slip-resistant adhesives not allow tile to vertically slip more than 0,5 mm (0.02").

While an S1 mortar would be suitable for a mall’s ground level, an S2 highly deformable mortar is critical for a suspended second floor, in order to accommodate load, deflection and movement – without losing bond.

Page 8: Realtá · PDF fileRealtá MAPEI ® Americas TM. Realtá MAPEI ... 1-888-US-MAPEI (1-888-876-2734) Fax: (954) ... affect Ultrafl ex 2’s excellent setting

Realtá MAPEI Americas NUMÉRO 06, 2007 31

With fl oor spans also becoming longer (in some cases 19" and 20" O.C. [48 and 51 cm]), the entire fl oor installation (including tile/stone, mortar and grout) must be able to adequately deform in order to accommodate movement and defl ection. Contemporary, heavy, large-format tiles ranging from 18" x 18" up to 48" x 48"(46 x 46 cm to 122 x 122 cm) are sometimes installed on substrates with longer spans, with suspended spans or on building facades that are exposed to thermal growth, wind and movement. Again, in such cases deformability is absolutely critical to installation success.

ISO 13007 classifi cations use a testing method that quantifi es the degree of deformability. Adhesives can be classifi ed as an “S1” or “S2,” based on the amount of defl ection the adhesive can withstand without breaking bond. An adhesive is classifi ed as S1 (deformable) for a defl ection rating of ≥ 2,5 mm but < 5 mm(≥ 3/32" but ≤ 1/5"), or S2 (highly deformable) for a defl ection rating of ≥ 5 mm (≥ 1/5"). A deformability classifi cation benefi ts the construction industry by eliminating the perception thatminimum-performance mortars can achieve the same outcome as premium-performance, higher-priced mortars.

‘P’ is for ‘adhesion to exterior-grade plywood’ In the U.S. residential market, the practice of installing tile over exterior-grade plywood substrates has grown tremendously. In recent years, ANSI has developed the A118.11 standard, which identifi es the minimum-bonding requirement for a cementitious adhesive and plywood substrate. This standard requires that the shear bond value of the adhesive be equal to 100 psi (0,69 MPa) at 7 days, and 150 psi (1,03 MPa) after 28 days.

The “P1” classifi cation is equivalent to the minimum requirement for bonding to plywood under ANSI A118.11. However, the ISO 13007 standards differentiate the higher-performing P2 adhesives by requiring that they meet double the P1 shear bond value. For example, adhesives with a P2 designation are an absolute must for successfully installing tile over fl oor joists that are 24" O.C.(61 cm). It is also recommended for the best performance possible that a mortar with the S2 designation be used in conjunction with the P2 designation.

Understanding the ISO 13007 codes on adhesive packages enables contractors to choose the right adhesive for the job in order to maximize installation success and prevent costly callbacks. Architects and specifi ers particularly benefi t by including these easy-to-use classifi cations in their specifi cations and CAD drawings. By clearly specifying the right product for the right job, the architect is able to “value-engineer” the project for both cost and product performance, without sacrifi cing quality.

In the next issue of Realta MAPEI Americas, look forward to learning about ISO 13007’s grout classifi cations and their special characteristics. Logic behind the letters CG, RG, F, A and W will be explored.

inside scoop

Due to the various grades of plywood used in construction today, ISO 13007’s P1 and P2 ratings were developed to help optimizethe bond to plywood.

ISO 13007 standards specify that the mortar must be able to deform between 2,5 to 5 mm (3/32" to 1/5") for an S1 rating or ≥ 5 mm (1/5") for an S2 rating – before point of failure.

The 411 on ISO 13007After thorough consideration of North American, British and European ceramic tile adhesive standards, the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) committee reached a consensus about new product standards. Under the ISO 13007 standards, an adhesive or grout must pass certain minimum performance tests before being accredited with a performance classifi cation.

Product classifi cations are expressed alphanumerically, using simple letters and numbers. The letters describe the type of adhesive (such as cement-based, organic or reactive resin) along with special characteristics (such as fast-setting, slip-resistant, fl exible, etc.) The numbers indicate whether the performance is “normal” (such as regular strength for medium traffi c use) or “improved” (such as higher strength for high traffi c use).

About the project …

MAPEI PartnersProject Owner: Vancouver Parks and RecreationInstaller: Fricia ConstructionEngineer: Golder and AsociatesMAPEI Distributor: Richform Construction Supply Co. Ltd.MAPEI Coordinator: Dave Randall

MAPEI Products• For maximizing bond to the repair mortar, Planitop 12 vertical and overhead one-component repair mortar was mixed in a 1:1 ratio with Planicrete AC acrylic latex admixture, and applied.• For repairing and renovating the seawall’s deteriorated concrete, Planitop 12 vertical and overhead one component repair mortar was used.

Recently, sections of the seawall have shown signs of deterioration. That’s no surprise, given the Pacifi c Northwest’s rainy climate, the area’s continual exposure to harsh sea air and the heavy foot traffi c that Stanley Park attracts. The stone wall has fulfi lled its purpose of protecting the park from erosion, but the abuse has taken its toll. To repair and restore a 1,500-square-foot (139-m2) section of the seawall’s retaining wall, located near the park’s Brockton Point Lighthouse, the City of Vancouver’s Parks and Recreation Department selected Fricia Construction.

Challenge: To repair and restore 1,500 square feet (139 m2) of eroded, damaged concrete coping at the top of a retaining wall, which divides a parking area above from the seawall walkway below.

Solution: Step 1Installers hydroblasted the damaged coping to remove all loose, damaged concrete and prepare/profi le the surface to receive the repair mortar.

Step 2To make the seawall’s repair especially effective, MAPEI Technical Services Representative Dave Randall suggested maximizing bond to the repair mortar by applying a slurry bond coat. Fricia Construction adopted his bond coat recipe: MAPEI’s Planitop ® 12 vertical and overhead repair mortar mixed in a 1:1 ratio with Planicrete® AC acrylic latex admixture.

Planitop 12 is a thixotropic, fi ber-reinforced mortar that can be placed up to 2" (5 cm) thick. Planicrete AC enhances the performance of repair mortars by increasing compressive, fl exural and tensile strengths, while decreasing permeability and potential for cracking.

Step 3To complete the renovation and repair, the slurry bond coat was followed with a coat of Planitop 12. Curing involved a burlap wet-curing method, which helps limit the amount of shrinkage the concrete repair might experience in the West Coast’s wet, windy climate.

Once cured, the repair produced a natural graycolor that nicely matchedthe remainder of the retaining wall. In addition, the repair fi t the bill when it came to

Up with people, down with soundMapesonic™ SM lowersthe noise in high-risesNearly 20,000 high-rise buildings dot the landscape in 20 of theUnited States’ largest cities, and more than 5,000 shape the skylinesof Canada’s metropolitan centers. Many more thousands of buildings with 2 or more fl oors are abundantly found in both metro and ruralNorth America. All of these buildings house people and/or businesses, and range from all-residential to all-commercial.

Multi-story buildings offer many benefi ts to occupants seeking convenience, close-to-home amenities and a sense of security – without the hassles of property maintenance, However, multi-story buildings can have their drawbacks, too – the most notable being noise transmission from one fl oor to another. This challenge can be minimized with the use of a quality sound-reduction membrane, installed beneath the fi nished fl oor surface.

Impact noises and sound transmissions through tiled fl oors are generally the 2 types of sounds that bother high-rise tenants the most. Addressing such annoyances begins with the initial fl oor-covering phase, whereby the architect or acoustical engineer for the high-rise specifi es that a sound-reduction membrane be applied to the concrete or plywood substrate, before tile or stone is set.

International Architectural Testing Standards for Acoustics

ASTM International (originally “American Society For Testing And Materials,” founded in 1898) is one of the largest voluntary standards organizations in the world. The organization is known for high technical quality and market relevancy. Among the 12,000+ standards that ASTM offers across dozens of fi elds, architects commonly reference 2 standards: ASTM E90-04 and ASTM E492-04. These standards are designed to measure the effi ciency by which a fl oor/ceiling assembly reduces airborne sound and impact sound.

1. Measuring airborne sound (ASTM E90-04) This test standard for Sound Transmission Class (STC) covers the laboratory measurement of airborne sound transmission loss of building partitions, including walls, fl oor/ceiling assemblies and other space-dividing elements. Many municipalities now consider a rating 50 or greater (with or without a suspended ceiling) as the minimum acceptable for multi-story buildings to minimize such airborne sound transmissions as voice, radio, stereo and television.

2. Measuring impact sound (ASTM E492-04) This test standard for Impact Insulation Class (IIC) covers the laboratory measurement of sound generated by impact, such as footsteps, dropped objects and moving furniture. The test concerns sound that is transmitted through fl oor/ceiling assemblies and surfaced with any type of fl oor-covering material.

Many municipalities now consider a rating of 50 or greater(with or without a suspended ceiling) as the minimum acceptable for multi-story buildings.

Impressive sound reductionwith new Mapesonic SM

MAPEI’s Mapesonic™ SM sheet membrane, specifi cally designed for soundproofi ng, serves double duty by offering in-plane crack isolation up to 3/8" (10 cm). Multi-function Mapesonic SM is the newest addition to MAPEI’s Tile & Stone Installation Systems division, serving to dramatically reduce airborne and impact sounds transmitted through fl oor/ceiling assemblies.

As a premium 90-mil (0.093" or 2,3 mm) “peel-and-stick” membrane, Mapesonic SM offers an impressive STC rating of 73 and IIC rating of 69 over a 6" (15 cm) concrete slab with a drop ceiling. This installer-friendly membrane is designed with convenient layout lines spaced 1 foot (0,30 m) apart, to help reduce the labor associated with measuring and cutting. Because the membrane is designed with a light-colored fabric, installers can easily see the printed layout lines when installing in dimly lit job sites, helping facilitate applications quickly and easily. Finally, Mapesonic SM is offered in conveniently sized, contractor-friendly 3-foot (0,91 m) rolls.

Supporting fast-track construction, Mapesonic SM is perfectly compatible with MAPEI SM Primer™. It requires only 15 minutes for the primer to dry before installers can roll on Mapesonic SM, immediately installing tile or stone anywhere sound is unwelcome.

Developed with MAPEI’s “green innovation,” Mapesonic SM is LEED-compliant and helps to contribute valuable points toward LEED-certifi ed projects. For information on product- and system-based warranties for Mapesonic SM, visit www.mapei.com.

A simplifi ed measure of impact noise: Delta IICBecause impact sound is usually much more bothersome to occupants of multi-story buildings, many building owners and architects have gone above and beyond minimum standards to specify a higher-performing sound-reduction membrane. The acoustical unit of measure that results from the ASTM’s newest impact isolation class test method (E2179) is known as Delta IIC. This was created to help simplify the decision-making process when it comes to choosing a fl oor/ceiling sound-reduction system.

To calculate the Delta IIC, a recognized test laboratory begins with the Impact Insulation Class (IIC) rating of a fl oor with an assembled system, including fi nished fl ooring (tile or stone), toppings or underlayments and the sound reduction membrane. From this, the IIC rating of a 6" (15 cm) bare concrete fl oor is subtracted. The higher the resulting Delta IIC, the higher the performance level of the fl ooring assembly.

Techn i ca l l y Speaking Featuring customer questions from our Website

and our Technical Services’ expert responses

Patching the substrateQ: Can I use a cement-based patching compound to ramp a few doorways up to about 3" (7,5 cm) before installing VCT in a retirement home?

A: In general, while patching compounds work well for correcting substrate imperfections in concrete and approved wood substrates before the installation of floor coverings, they are not designed to work interchangeably as ramping materials. However, with the advent of MAPEI’s innovative new Tri-Patch™ versatile concrete patching compound, a one-product solution that offers multiple applications is now available in the marketplace. With new Tri-Patch, you can save time and money by carrying one surface-preparation product that does it all.

Mixed with the standard water ratio, Tri-Patch will patch up to 1" (2,5 cm) thick in a single application. Modify the water ratio, and Tri-Patch can be mixed to a pourable consistency for skim-coating or leveling minor depressions. Use less water for higher builds and for ramping up to 4" (10 cm). To top it off, when mixed with MAPEI’s new Patch Enhancer supreme liquid admixture, Tri-Patch can be used as an embossing leveler over properly prepared and bonded floor coverings.

Tri-Patch not only features an incredibly smooth finished surface, it promises a compressive strength of 4,000 psi (27,6 MPa) after 28 days, allowing it to withstand heavy loads that hospital carts and wheelchairs present. Shrink-free, crack-free, fast-setting Tri-Patch allows you to install floor coverings in only 60 to 90 minutes, meeting today’s fast-track requirements that are vital in occupied spaces. Formulated with MAPEI’s green innovation, Tri-Patch is LEED-compliant, with potential for contributing points toward LEED-certified projects. Finally, Tri-Patch is packaged in a pail for easy storage and mixing, and features a minimized odor that appeals to both installers and residents.

Solid vinyl tile vs. solid vinyl plankQ: My contractor says I can’t use the same adhesive to install solid vinyl tile and solid vinyl plank. How can this be true when they are made with the same materials?

A: Your contractor is indeed correct in recommending different adhesives for installing solid vinyl tile and solid vinyl plank. Although both are manufactured using the same raw materials, one important factor differentiates the two – dimensional stability. Solid vinyl tiles are usually manufactured in sizes that are equal on all sides, such as 12" x 12", 16" x 16", and 18" x 18" (30 x 30 cm, 41 x 41 cm, and 46 x 46 cm). This characteristic makes solid vinyl tiles more dimensionally stable than solid vinyl planks, which are typically manufactured in sizes measuring 3" x 36", 4" x 36", and 6" x 36" (7,5 x 91 cm, 10 x 91 cm, and 15 x 91 cm).

For installations involving solid vinyl tile, MAPEI recommends using Ultrabond ECO® 350 high-tack universal flooring adhesive. Formulated with a proprietary acrylic polymer, this superior adhesive allows floor-covering installations after

About the author: Art Palmer is a Technical Services Consultant for MAPEI’s Floor Covering Installation Systems division. Art brings to his position nearly 30 years of floor-covering expertise in the installation of VCT, residential and commercial sheet goods, including linoleum and homogenous products.

a short flash time or once the adhesive exhibits pressure-sensitive characteristics. Ultrabond ECO 350 is designed to not stain vinyl flooring, and its buttery consistency makes the adhesive installer-friendly.

Solid vinyl planks become unstable when subjected to subfloor movement or seasonal climatic changes. As a result of typical expansion and contraction, rectangular-shaped solid vinyl planks are more susceptible to shrinkage on the length. For this reason, MAPEI recommends using a hard-setting acrylic adhesive such as Ultrabond ECO 300 when installing solid vinyl planks over porous substrates. Ultrabond ECO 300 locks flooring into place while offering excellent indentation resistance. In order to limit flooring movement, this adhesive is formulated to provide excellent bond, while also promising a stain-free vinyl installation.

When installing solid vinyl planks over nonporous substrates, MAPEI recommends using a two-part reactive, polyurethane adhesive such as Ultrabond ® G21. Its aggressive bond makes difficult-to-bond-to substrates no challenge for this ultimate problem-solver adhesive.

Dimensionally unstable solid vinyl planks won’t budge whenusing hard-setting Ultrabond ECO 300.

A variety of woodsQ: I am starting work in a commercial building that involves installation of various sizes and types of wood products (like oak, bamboo and engineered wood) in several offices. Can one adhesive be used for all wood products, or do I have to purchase a different adhesive for each wood product?

A: MAPEI has a one-solution wood adhesive that would work beautifully for all the wood products that you are installing: Ultrabond ® 990. Because different types of wood products vary in porosity (for example, engineered wood is more porous than solid planks), the expansion and contraction of the product must be considered. The higher the porosity, the greater the potential for wood to absorb liquid from the adhesive, leading to greater expansion and contraction over time. Ultrabond 990 is a moisture-curing urethane adhesive, making it ideal for the installation of both highly porous and less porous wood products.

When it comes to installing wood products of varying sizes, dimensional stability becomes an important consideration. The longer and/or wider the plank, the more dimensionally unstable the wood flooring becomes. With a nonslump formula and excellent ridge-holding characteristics, Ultrabond 990 maximizes the potential for excellent transfer and strong bond. This adhesive features elastomeric properties that allow for the natural subtle movements of wood flooring. A solvent-free, low-odor, user-friendly formulation makes Ultrabond 990 easy to spread, which is particularly important for installers working on large, commercial projects such as yours.

MAPEI products score big at basketballmuseum’s restaurant by Anita Burton, Editor

In 1968, after 30 years of planning, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame sprang to life on the campus of Massachusetts’ Springfi eld College, considered the birthplace of basketball. The world’s premier Basketball Hall of Fame not only preserves and promotes the game’s legacy, but honors basketball’s elite at both amateur and professional levels. Inside the Hall of Fame, visitors can gaze in awe at vintage basketball memorabilia, and then treat themselves to a fabulous meal at the Hall of Fame’s Pazzo Ristorante.

“Pazzo” means “crazy” in Italian. While you don’t have to be crazy to enjoy superb cuisine at Pazzo, it helps to be crazy about basketball. This charming establishment lets customers and fans reminisce about basketball’s greatest heroes amidst an open, airy and elegant Italian ambiance. Trendy chic and Old-World charm combine in an environment that includes a dramatic brick oven, Venetian plastering and Italian tile.

The upscale decor at Pazzo Ristorante owes to a recent facelift that better refl ects the style of its owners. When it came to choosing the perfect tile and setting materials, the owners sought the advice of one of MAPEI’s oldest distributors in North America, Boston Tile, which was celebrating its 50th year in business. To renovate the restaurant, 18" x 18" (46 x 46 cm) large-format porcelain tile was chosen for the restaurant’s walls and fl oors, along with extensive mosaic accents – all set with MAPEI’s premium mortars and grouts.

24 ISSUE 06, 2007 Realtá MAPEI Americas

Next to tile, grout is the most visible part of a floor or wall installation. When properly installed, it can help add significant value and beauty to a room. With careful preparation and installation techniques, many of today’s common issues with cementitious grouts can be prevented, including shading, mottling, cracking, pinholes, efflorescence and powdery grout.

Help minimize repair-related labor costs and ease long-term maintenance for customers by keeping in mind the tips on the following page.

Now in 36 colors: MAPEI’s cementititious groutsFor installations involving floors, walls or countertops, MAPEI offers cementitious grout in a variety of contemporary colors to suit every style.

Premium-grade sanded Keracolor™ S grout is for horizontal installations that require larger grout joints measuring between 1/8" and 5/8" (3 to 16 mm). Following application of Keracolor S, the tile installation can be walked on within a convenient 24 to 48 hours.

Also premium-grade, Keracolor U is for vertical installations that require tight grout joints measuring between 1/16" and 1/8" (1,5 to 3 mm). As an unsanded grout, Keracolor U features a creamy, smooth texture that won’t even scratch the most sensitive tiles. Both Keracolor S and Keracolor U are affordable, easy to apply and easy to clean for even the least experienced installers. These grouts meet ANSI A118.6 and ISO 13007 CG2WA standards.

Unlike Portland-cement grouts, Ultracolor ® grout is specially formulated with MAPEI’s High-Hydrated Cement Technology (HCT™) to prevent color inconsistency and efflorescence while building high early strength. Rapid-setting, highly durable Ultracolor permits foot traffic in only 3 hours. Ultracolor is designed for joint widths measuring 1/8" to 1" (3 mm to 2,5 cm). Like Keracolor S and Keracolor U, Ultracolor includes BioBlock™ antimicrobial technology to help inhibit the growth of various types of odor- and stain-causing mold, mildew and bacteria. Ultracolor meets ANSI A118.7 and ISO 13007 CG2WAF standards.

In the dining area of Ontario’s Windsor Casino, MAPEI’s Ultracolorgrout was used throughout the porcelain tile installation.

To clean cementitious grouts, squeegee off excess grout diagonallyusing a sharp-edged rubber float.

Page 27: Realtá · PDF fileRealtá MAPEI ® Americas TM. Realtá MAPEI ... 1-888-US-MAPEI (1-888-876-2734) Fax: (954) ... affect Ultrafl ex 2’s excellent setting

prepare joints before installing grout. To help prevent discoloration of grout, remove excess mortar or mastic left in grout joints so that the grout

will fill at least 2/3 of the depth evenly. Also, before grouting, use a vacuum to eliminate excess debris such as sanding from dry wall mud or saw dust.

use proper tools for grouting. To prevent pinholes and powdery-looking joints, always use a slow-speed drill to mix the grout to a uniform paste.

Grout should not be mixed by hand, because excess water is required to facilitate mixing, which could cause the grout installation to fail.

When it is time to clean the grout, squeegee off excess grout diagonally using a sharp-edged rubber float. Next, remove residue with a durable cellulose sponge, as opposed to a collapsible foam sponge. A cellulose sponge helps to prevent excess cleaning water from pooling in the grout joint, which can promote unwanted efflorescence.

protect the grout installation until fully cured. To promote color consistency, protect the grout installation from exposure to dust, dirt and

other contaminants until the grout has fully cured or dried sufficiently. Ensure that the installation is protected from excessive air movement, so that the entire installation dries evenly. Do not use fans to speed up curing time, as this can dry the surface of grout faster, which risks blotchiness, surface cracking and pinholes. To best protect cementitious grouts, apply a sealer as soon as permitted by the sealer manufacturer.

install grout under extreme temperatures or humidity without first consulting the manufacturer. Temperature, humidity and

wind affect the way a grout cures; when not controlled, they can lead to expensive grout-related problems. Cementitious grout best cures when installed and maintained at between 70°F and 80°F (21°C and 26°C) with 50% relative humidity. Ideally, it is best to store MAPEI grout and the mixing water at this temperature for 24 hours before the installation.

In summer, grout during the coolest part of the day and take steps to minimize air movement throughout the curing process. In winter, the installation temperature should be above 50°F (10°C) and remain well above freezing for up to 21 days while the grout cures (consult the Technical Data Sheet for cure time).

use too much water when mixing the grout. Always refer to MAPEI’s mixing instructions (which are printed on the package) before

mixing the grout. Adding too much water to grout powder can result in a lighter shade of grout, as well as latex migration and efflorescence. Adding too little water to powder prevents the grout from achieving proper hydration of the cement, resulting in weaker joints and a darker grout color.

When more than one unit is being used, dry-blend together all units of grout powder to avoid shade variation between different lots.

After the grout is thoroughly mixed, allow it to sit (“slake”) for up to 5 minutes. Remix without adding more water, thus optimizing grout color consistency and helping to prevent cracking, pinholes and powdery joints.

use too much water when cleaning the grout. Only attempt to clean the grout once the grout no longer transfers to the

finger after being gently touched. This typically takes 10 to 30 minutes with nonporous tiles. With porous pavers or quarry tiles, pre-sealing the tiles will help during rinsing. The appearance of a grout haze on the tile surface may prompt the desire to rinse, but rinsing grout too quickly can cause pigment to wash out, negatively affecting the shade.

Introducing too much moisture onto the surface of new grout can lead to all kinds of problems, including uneven curing, spotting, discoloration, efflorescence and powdery joints. Thanks to advancements in latex-modified grouts, less is better when it comes to preventing latex migration. Take precautions to ensure that no standing water remains on the joint surface following a grout installation, as the potential problems are easy to prevent but a nuisance to repair.

How can I convert deteriorated apartmentbalconies into decorative artwork?

26 ISSUE 06, 2007 Realtá MAPEI Americas

A thorough examination is keyAccording to current industry practices, the following factors must be included in the initial examination of the existing concrete balcony in order to determine which concrete repair system would be most effective:

The cause of the damage• Physical• Structural• Environmental (such as salt and seawater)

The condition of the balcony• Integrity of the slab surface• Exposed rebar • Weak, loose handrails• Pooling of water• Deterioration around expansion joints• Degree and type of slope (ingress or egress)

The severity of the damage• Surface issue vs. deep repair• Small vs. large surface area• Corroded rebar

The design of the balcony• Post-tensioned slab• Cantilever slab with heavy rebar

The condition of existing expansion joints• Caulked with sealan• Exposed with cracking

Exterior balconies exposed to adverse weather are at high risk of experiencing severe deterioration, including corroded rebar, spalled concrete, undesirable surface sloping and damaged nosings.

Consider consulting a structural engineer to thoroughly assess the damage as well as referencing the most current industry repair standards for concrete balconies. This will helpto establish long-term, successful and cost-effective repair solutions.

Industry guidelines availablefor concrete repairBoth the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) provide excellent reference materials on appropriate methods and level of aggressiveness for completing a concrete repair safely, without damaging the existing structure. For example, guidelines specify the type of profi le required for the desired repair and how to prevent bruising of the existing concrete structure.

To address spalling issues, both institutes offer guidelines for repairing and replacing rebar. While these guidelines are helpful, it is best to always have the assistance of an engineer when dealing with specifi c project parameters.

Single-source balcony repair system

The following example outlines the steps involved in repairing a deteriorated exterior balcony that needs extensive repair and resloping, followed by an aesthetically pleasing decorative finish coat. The systems profiled demonstrate MAPEI concrete repair, protection, waterproofing and decorative finishing products.

A) To repair corroded rebar: Remove damaged and deteriorated concrete using methods defined by ACI or ICRI. Clean rebar to remove all corrosion. Coat exposed rebar with Planibond ® 3C solvent-free, epoxy-modified anticorrosion and bonding agent, which promotes exceptional bonding to both rebar and repair products. Environmentally friendly Planibond 3C allows for passive movement of moisture while protecting rebar from chloride and salt damage. An extended open time makes for very user-friendly application, whether a brush, short-nap roller, push broom or hopper sprayer is used.

B) To fill large concrete voids: Fill voids with Planitop ® 12 one-component vertical and overhead repair mortar. Fiber-reinforced, thixotropic Planitop 12 can be placed up to 2" (5 cm) per lift, and spray-applied with a low-pressure stator pump (with air attachment) to build out necessary depth. An extended open time and beautifully smooth texture enable easy application, which is especially important for larger repairs.

C) To repair small concrete voids: Fill voids and repair concrete nosings from featheredge to 4" (10 cm) per lift with one-component Planitop X – MAPEI’s fast-setting horizontal, vertical and overhead repair mortar. Composed of special high-strength hydraulic binders, aggregates, additives and fibers, Planitop X provides a tenacious bond to concrete. With the simple addition of water, easy-to-apply Planitop X is sculptable within minutes and dries to a light gray color that blends well with existing concrete. Planitop X can be used with Planicrete ® AC acrylic latex admixture and water in aggressive environments.

Apply a layer of Mapelastic Smart waterproofing and crack-bridging protective coating to waterproof, protect and maximize the balcony’s durability for the long term.

D) To reslope the balcony surface to a level plane that promotes proper water drainage: Create an acceptable plane by applying Mapecem ® 102 one-component, polymer-modified, fast-setting mortar – developed specifically for horizontal concrete surfaces. Producing high compressive strength in only 3 to 4 hours, Mapecem 102 is the mortar of choice when deadlines are tight. Easy-to-apply Mapecem 102 can be placed in thicknesses of 1/4" to 2" (6 mm to 5 cm) per lift, and up to 8" (20 cm) with extension.

E) To waterproof, protect and maximize the balcony’s durability long-term: Apply a layer of Mapelastic™ Smart waterproofing and crack-bridging protective coating. Highly flexible Mapelastic Smart easily fills tight corners and curved structures via application with roller or brush. Formulated to provide excellent bond to concrete, Mapelastic Smart provides exceptional waterproofing and concrete protection against seawater, salts and sulphates. Costly concrete repairs can be prevented over the long term by protecting installations with Mapelastic Smart.

F) To offer an aesthetically pleasing finish to the repair: Spray-apply the balcony with MAPEI Spraytop™ RS premium decorative knockdown topping. Compatible with most sealers, dyes and stains, this fast-setting, slip-resistant topping is specially designed to provide unique textured finishes to vertical and horizontal concrete surfaces. Unique textured finishes can be created using a trowel, hopper gun or plastic pump from featheredge to 3/16" (4,5 mm) depths. User-friendly MAPEI Spraytop RS permits the use of water-based, acrylic sealers within 2 to 4 hours after application, promoting quick job-site turnaround.

A warranty for every needProduct warrantiesMAPEI backs the high quality of its products by offering individual warranties for each product.

System warrantiesMAPEI’s system warranties provide enhanced coverage through combining products as specifi ed in the Warranty Length Tables of each warranty document.

When considering a system warranty, the customer and the MAPEI representative should review the MAPEI products applicable for each category of the installation (such as surface preparation, waterproofi ng, mortars and grouts). To qualify for a system warranty, the installer must use at least two MAPEI products to make up the complete specifi ed installation.

System warranties are based on the strength of the complete system. If a product with a shorter warranty term is used in a system, the warranty life of the system defaults to the shorter term, as shown in the example below.

Special circumstancesCertain circumstances require a consultation with MAPEI’s Technical Services Department. For any installation exceeding 10,000 sq. ft. (929 m2), MAPEI’s Technical Services Department must be contacted and issue a special project warranty document.

MAPEI does not warrant its products when used withnon-MAPEI materials. In such circumstances, the contractor and the MAPEI sales representative should contact MAPEI Technical Services to review options.

The Brampton Soccer Centre,Brampton, Ontario

The Brampton Soccer Centre is slated to be a citywide destination, open to all local residents with a love for this growing sport. Its main attraction features four spectacular indoor fields, in addition to four outdoor soccer fields with two overlapping cricket pitches. Home to a multitude of minor soccer organizations, it is anticipated that 64,000 players will frequent the center during the typical 8-month indoor season.

Custom Flooring of Markham, Ontario and Deltec Flooring of Brampton were selected to work on the project. Single-component, bright white Adesilex™ P10 premium glass tile mortar, specifically chosen for its remarkable nonsag characteristic was used to install 7,000 square feet (650 m2) of glass tile on the building’s interior. As a result of time constraints brought on with the advent of cold weather, installers switched to premium, rapid-setting Granirapid ® System, developed with High-Hydrated Cement Technology (HCT™), to set 1,800 square feet (167 m2) of glass tiles on the building’s exterior facade.

In order to waterproof the soccer centre’s washrooms, installers relied on Mapelastic™ HPG flexible waterproofing membrane, developed with BioBlock™ antimicrobial technology to help inhibit the growth of various types of odor- and stain-causing mold, mildew and bacteria. This was followed by application of Ultracontact ™ full-contact mortar, to set the large-format porcelain floor tiles. Ultracontact ’s drop-and-go technology eliminated the need to back-butter the tiles, providing a much-needed time savings. To complete the tile installation, rapid-setting, color-consistent, efflorescence-free Ultracolor ® premium sanded grout was chosen.

Once complete, Brampton residents will proudly sport a state-of-the-art soccer center, which clearly stands apart from all others.
