1 Au pair••·•·Aim To understand job advertisement and letters offering work.

Preparation Copy the handouts on pages 7 and 9 - one copy per student. •

Introduction (5 minutes)Write the word au pair on the board. Checkstudents understand the word (an au pa ir is ayoung person, usually a woman, who stays witha family in a foreign country and looks aftertheir children). Ask students to give you asmany words and phrases as they can think ofconnected with au pairs. For example: languageclasses, children, family, housework, foreigncountry, loneiy, not much money. Write their ideason the board.

Presentation (20 minutes)Activity A In paírs, students read the text andanswer the questions. Encourage students to usedictionaries where necessary. Check answersorally, explaining where necessary. Correctmajor errors.

Activity B Elicit/pre-teach advertisement.Students read the advertisements, usingdictionaries where necessary. Then theycomplete the chart. Walk round, giving helpand encouragement. Then check orally. Writenew words on the board in sentences.

Practice (25 minutes)Activity C Elicit/pre-teach to be interested in. Inpairs, students discuss the questions. Elicitanswers orally and ask students to explain whatis wrong with the other two families. You maywant to write up the answers on the board. Forexample:Amaya is interested in advertisement a because thefamily is in London. There are no babies in thefamily. There is a good language school nearby.

Activity D In pairs or small groups, thestudents read the letters and answer questions1 and 2. Students use their dictionaries wherenecessary. Check answers orally, explainingwhere necessary. Correct major errors. Anexample answer to question 2 might be:The family in letter 1do not sound very friendly.They want to leave Amaya alone at weekends! Also,they want her to speak Spanish every day, whichwill not be good for her English. Family 2 soundmuch nicer. They want to help Amaya with herEnglish and say she will be 'one of the family'.Write new words on the board in sentences.

Activity E In paírs, students find the words inthe text. Omit if lack of time.

Activity F Walk round and listen to students asthey discuss this question. Listen to theirmistakes and briefly go through the mistakes.Then elicit answers from each group. Omit iflack of time.

Conclusion (5 minutes)Ask the students to choose three new wordsthey have learnt in the lessan and to write asentence using each of them. Walk round andcheck the sentences. Omit if lack of time.
