    Reading with your child

    benefits them and you in

    many ways. When you read

with your child, you help them

    develop their vocabulary and

    fluency skills. You are also

able to find out which books

interest your child so that you

can provide them. Reading isa gateway into a childs imagi-

    nation, and reading with them

can help you both to enjoy

    imagining together.

Have books handy at all times.

Whether it is riding in the car, shop-ping, attending sports events, visit-

ing friends, or sitting at home books

should be available for you and

    your childs enjoyment.

Read with or to your child before

bed each night. This is a great way

to spend time with your child every

night even if your life is hectic dur-

ing the day. Have a family reading time as many

days a week as you can. Devote

each day to a different family mem-

ber. Each member of he family

chooses a book or section of one to

read together and then discuss their

    favorite parts.

Before reading a new book, take

turns describing what you think thestory will be about according to the

    title and/or cover illustration. After

reading the story, discuss if your

    predictions were correct.

Take regular trips to the library with

your child and bring home many

    wonderful books!
