“I’m not so sure,” Matt said.“Really?” Lea asked Matt.
“I meant to whisper that,” said

Tom carefully climbed up the slide.
He went up slowly so he would not

But one thing is for sure. We will

They decided to make

She was very happy to

Making muffins was not
easy. The mix was too
thick. They had to add a lot of milk to fix
it. The muffins were not perfect, but Pam
and Marco did not care. Being together
was fun. The best thing to share was the
company of a new friend!

Farmers can’t grow or
regrow food crops without
water. In the Southwest the
weather is hot and dry. So
farmers often must irrigate
their land. That means they bring water from one place
to another. Long ago Texas
farmers made long ditches
called canals. The canals
carried river water to farms. In the
Rio Grande Valley, water from the
river helped farmers grow crops such as oranges.
Some Texas farmland sits on an
underground sea of water. In the
past farmers sank pipes into the
earth and built windmills. Today
electric pumps bring up water. Now
Texas farmers can grow many kinds
of crops. Water is brought up
from the ground by
electric pumps to the
growing crops.

Main Idea
If campers cannot hear, how do they know
what someone is saying to them? One way is
through sign language. Sign language is a way
that people can talk to one another without
speaking. Signing is a way to show words
and letters with your hands and fingers. It is
like a code.
Some relatives of deaf children started
Camp Taloali. They wanted the deaf
people in their family to have a camp
like hearing children have.
At the end of each summer, the
campers celebrate with a big party.
They remember all the fun times they
had together. Then they sign good-bye
to their new friends.

Dear Aki,
It was so nice to visit you inMichigan, but I’m glad to be
back home in Japan. I showed
Grandfather pictures from your
soccer game. “Look at her shin
guards and gloves!” he exclaimed.
He sounded very surprised. I
explained that you are a goalie. It’s your job to guard the goal and
keep the other team from scoring.
Grandfather’s concern is for your
safety. He is worried that you
might get hurt. Now he knows
that what you wear helps keep
you safe.

Dear Grandmother,
My last soccer game was yesterday. Before
the game I got a sandwich from one of the
food vendors. They sell food in stands by the
field. I think that sandwich gave me energy
because I kept the other team from scoring
twice! We won the game! Each of us got
an award. The award has a figure of a
soccer player that looks like a little
person kicking a ball. I am adding
the award to my collection. It looks
great next to my other awards!

Bill turned and saw Sue. She spied Bill
and his horse on the riverbank, so she
jumped off the catfish. Sue was shivering

sure have a mighty fine horse.”
Bill replied, “I’m Pecos Bill. He is a
great horse, but he only likes me to ridehim. I wouldn’t want you to get hurt.”
Sue listened to Bill’s advice. The words

ride his horse. From that time on, though,

When writing a story, the author
may give ideas about pictures to the
illustrator. But sometimes the story
is about something familiar to theillustrator, something that he or she
has experienced in the past.
For example, Mice and Beans is
about a party. Joe Cepeda remembered
occasions when his family had parties.
The parties were to celebrate special events.
He used his memories, his thoughts of thosepast events, to draw the pictures. Illustrators
also use their imagination. They picture in their

All animals need to eat, but
different beasts eat in different
ways.
A raccoon searches for fish,
nuts, and other things to eat.
Raccoons wash all their food
before eating it. To do this, they
must live near water. Even small
pools of water, like puddles, will
do. After the raccoon washes its
food, it begins to eat by taking
small bites. The animal may nibble
on an acorn once it is clean.

“We really do not have a lot of time left to save the
prairie,” says Ron Cole. A prairie is a large, flat area
covered with grasses.
Prairies have very few trees. Prairies once stretched
across the middle part of the United States. Todaymost of that land is covered with farms and towns
instead of grasses. Ron Cole belongs to a conservation
group that teaches people to take better
care of the prairie. Their goal is to protect
the prairie land that remains. That will help
the plants and animals that live there.

Hurricane Charley hit Florida in2004. It was a violent storm that
caused a lot of damage.
News reports told people in
Florida to beware of the storm.
People had to watch out for
heavy rains and strong winds.
Some people tried to make sure
that their homes were safe.
They covered their windows
with wooden boards. The boards
prevent windows from breaking.
Heavy rains dumped water
everywhere and caused floods.
Powerful winds uprooted trees.

The trees were blown over and the roots came
out of the ground. Strong winds were even
able to destroy houses. Some were completely
flattened. Hurricane Charley also damaged
crops. Luckily it did not hurt any of the cows
in the grasslands. Farmers took the animals
off the grassy fields in time.

Henry told us a story at
lunch. It was about our bodies
and how they work. He said thatwhen we run around and get out
of breath, sometimes we need to
suck more air into our lungs in a
quick way. Someone who gasped
might have gulped lots of air
after playing soccer for awhile.
Our bodies need air to continue
to run and play.
Next, Henry told us about
our hearts. Our hearts pump
blood through our bodies. Theypush the blood from one part of
our bodies to another. The heart
squeezes hard to push the blood.
Henry said that our hearts and
