The themes of pride and prejudice are discernible at different points through thenovel. Which characters are proud and/or prejudiced? What are the consequencesfor them? What lessons do they learn?

Pride and Prejudiceis also a novel about marriage. Four weddings take place in thecourse of the novel: Charlotte Lucas and Mr. Collins, Lydia Bennet and Mr.

Wickam, Jane Bennet and Mr. Bingley and Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. How

do these marriages differ and what can we conclude?

What are the similarities and differences between the marriages of Lydia andWickham and Mr. and Mrs. Bennet?

Mr. Bennet appears at the beginning of the novel as a intelligent and amiable man.Does this perception change during the novel? If so, when and why?

There are several instances where women are portrayed as fundamentallydependent on men and mens fortune. The main example lies in the discussions

and scenes relating to the entailment of Longbourn to Mr. Collins. In what other

instances is this dependence described? Is it always in a negative light? How do

different characters react to this dependence?

Elizabeth Bennet is very independent for her times. During her confrontation withLady Catherine de Bourgh, she declares I am only resolved to act in that manner,which will, in my own opinion, constitute my happiness, without reference to you,

or to any person so wholly unconnected with me (p. 338). Are there any other

references to womens independence in this novel? If so, is independence always

seen as something positive?

An important feature of this novel is the interweaving of comedy, romance andsatire. How are each of these elements important to the novels success and how

does Austen manage juggling between these styles?

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

Jane Austen was born in Steventon rectory on

16 December 1775. Her family later moved to

Bath, then Southampton and finally to Chawton

in Hampshire. She began writing Pride and

Prejudice when she was twenty-two years old. It

was originally called First Impressions and was

initially rejected by publishers and only published

in 1813 after much revision. She published four

novels in her lifetime, Sense and Sensibility (1811),

Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814)

and Emma (1816). Jane Austen died on 18 July

1817. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were

both published posthumously in 1818.
