Reading Enrichment Unit The Grouchy Ladybug Unit by Eric Carle Unit Grade: First Time Frame: 3 class periods in Media Center Rationale: Sequencing is an on-going lesson and we will discuss how the ladybug is feeling. Students will sequence in two lessons and then relate the ladybug (text to self) about a time they felt grouchy. This reinforces what students have been learning in their classrooms, as well as in the media center. Standards: Georgia Performance Standards ELACC1RL3: Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details. ELACC1SL5: Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings. ELACC1W5: With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as needed. 21 st Century Skills 1.1.6 Read, view, and listen for information presented in any format (e.g., textual, visual, media, digital) in order to make inferences and gather meaning. 1.1.8 Demonstrate mastery of technology tools to access information and pursue inquiry. 3.2.1 Demonstrate leadership and confidence by presenting ideas to others in both formal and informal situations.

The Grouchy Ladybug Unit by Eric Carle Unit

Grade: First

Time Frame: 3 class periods in Media Center

Rationale: Sequencing is an on-going lesson and we will discuss how the ladybug is feeling. Students will sequence in two lessons and then relate the ladybug (text to self) about a time they felt grouchy. This reinforces what students have been learning in their classrooms, as well as in the media center.

First Class Period:1. Teacher will use the Voki as a hook to the lesson2. Teacher will read aloud The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle and the teacher will

ask comprehension questions throughout.

3. After reading, the teacher will review what sequencing is with the students4. Teacher and students will discuss the different events and the teacher will write

key words on the board for the beginning, middle, and end of the story5. Students will use the worksheet or will draw a picture of beginning/middle/end of

the story on a sheet of paper that that has been folded into thirds (you will see the creases for beginning, middle, and end)

Second Class Period:1. Teacher will review the events in the Grouchy Ladybug by doing a book walk

with the students2. Teacher and students will talk the clocks and the events that happened with each

(teacher will hand out cards with clocks with the corresponding animal prior to discussion)

3. Students will use the worksheet to write and illustrate each of the events that occurred throughout the book (for additional support students may refer to cards in front of room or look in copies of the book that is left out in media center)

Third Class Period:1. Teacher will re-read The Grouchy Ladybug and this time students will pay

attention to how the ladybug was feeling 2. The teacher and students will have a discussion about what grouchy means3. The teacher will record student responses as to what makes them feel grouchy4. Students will write a statement about what makes them feel grouchy and complete

a ladybug (teacher will take a picture of students with their “grouchy” faces to place in the middle of the ladybug).
