    The TV GUIDE Plus+* cont rol ler allows direct cont rol of a cable

    box and VCR using a pair of IR (inf rared) controllers.

    Plug t he TV GUIDE Plus+ cont roller in to the VCR CONTROL

    jack on the back of the TV.

    Aff ix the IR controllers directly over the IR remote sensors on

    your cable box and VCR.

    Plug in the TV.

    Plug t he end int o the wall outl et, matching t he wide blade of

    the plug w ith the wide slot in the outlet. Be sure to insert t he

    plug complet ely.

    Locating the IR (infrared)

    Remote Control Sensor on

    Your Cable Box or VCR

    The IR controllers must be affixeddirectly over the IR remote sensors onyour cable box or VCR.

    Some cable boxes and VCRs label theIR sensors; others do not. If thesensors are labeled, affix the IRcontrollers directly over them.

    IR Remot e Sensor

    For those that do not label the IRsensor, you need to use the cable boxor VCRs remote to locate the sensorbefore affixing the IR controllers.

    1. Hold the remote control so that itis touching the front of the cablebox or VCR.

    2. Slowly move the remote over thefront of the cable box or VCR

    while pressing the remotesPOWER button on and off

    3. When the cable box or VCR turnsoff or on, youve located thesensor.

    You should test the IR controllersafter setting up the TV GUIDE Plus+system. Temporarily attach the IRcontrollers with clear tape to thespots where you think the sensorsare located. After determining thatthe controllers are working correctly,affix them permanently.

    Insert batteries as shown, matching t he + and ends of each

    battery in the compartment.

    Press TV on the remote, or press POWER on the TV it self .

    overview of the basic rules for gett ing around in the menus.

    Proceed to sect ion three, Interactive Setup. The int eract ive setup

    rout ine walks you through t he steps needed t o fully conf igure

    the TV. The f irst steps ask you to select your preferred l anguage

    for t he menu system and to begin the auto channel search, wh ichput s available cable TV or ant enna signals int o t he TVs memory.

    You can skip any of t he steps and return t o them lat er.

    Tip: You can also select a menu itemby entering the item number with the

    number buttons on the remote.Press CLEAR at any time to remove alldisplays from the screen and return toTV viewing.

    Many VCR user manuals refer to aPROGRAM button. The M ENU SELECTbutton on this remote works as aPROGRAM button in VCR mode. Therest of this manual refers to thisbutton only as MENU.

    You only need to know one rule to use the on-screen menus and

    cont rol panels: point and select .

    W h a t i s Po i n t a n d Sel ect ?

    The point and select method has two steps.

    1. Point to a menu it em using t he MOVE arrows on the

    remote.

    To po int up o r dow n, press the up or dow n arrow s. To point

    left or righ t, press the left or righ t arrow s.

    2. Select a menu it em by pressing M ENU SELECT.

    Select ing an it em t ells the TVs menu system t o go ahead and

    make the change or go to a place you have indicated.

    For example, to select the Channel menu from the Main menu:

    1. Press MENU to bring up t he Main menu.

    5. Point t o Exitand press MENU to leave the menu system and

    return t o TV viewing.

    If you ever w ant to leave the menu system, press CLEAR.

    Once you know how to point and select your way through t he

    menus, you can apply this rule in the cont rol panels, which do

    the real w ork in t he menu system.

    There are three part s to t he menu system: menus, cont rol panels,

    and the TV GUIDE Plus+ system. But before you can use cont rol

    panels or t he TV GUIDE Plus+ system, you f irst have to move

    through at least one menuthe Main menu.

    M e n u s

    The f irst menu is called the Main menu. To br ing up t he Main

    menu:

    1. Press MENU on the remote or front panel:

    Menus take you t o anot her menu or a cont rol panel. There are

    two ways to make a choice in a menu:

    Point and select w ith the MOVE arrows and MENU.

    Press a number button on the remote. For example, in the

    Main menu press 3 to go st raight t o the Screen menu.

    Exiting a menu

    There are three ways to exit a menu:

    Point to Exitand press MENU.

    Press 0 on the remote.

    Press CLEAR. The on-screen displays are cleared from t he

    screen and you are retu rned t o TV viewing.

    Feel free to explore the menu system.If youre ever unsure where you are inthe menu system, or youre just plaintired of exploring, press CLEAR toremove the menus from the screenand start over again.

    Cont ro l Panels do t he work in t he menu system: it s where you

    choose a sett ing , enter a number, or adjust a level such as ti nt or

    bright ness. There are th ree kinds of cont rol panels: sliders, choice

    lists, and numeric entry.

    Sliders

    Sliders are used to make adjustment s to a part icular control.

    For example, to adjust the TVs contrast:

    1. Press MENU to bring up t he Main menu.

    2. Point t o Picture Quali tyand press MENU. The Pictu re Qual it ymenu comes up.

    3. Press MENU to select Basic Picture Cont rols.

    4. Press the right or left arrow t o adjust t he indicator line.

    Not ice that the picture changes as you adjust the cont rast.

    Now t hat you know how the Cont rast slider works, you know

    how all sliders work. You dont need to remember thenames of the control panel types.Once youve learned how each typeworks, youll be able to use any partof the menu system.

    Choice lists are used to choose a part icular sett ing f rom a list of

    sett ings. The current sett ing in a choice list is alw ays the

    highlighted item.

    For example, to indicate whether youre currently using a home

    antenna or a cable TV signals:

    1. Press MENU to bring up t he Main menu.

    2. Point t o Channeland press MENU. The Channel menu comes

    up.

    3. Point t o Signal Typeand press MENU. The Signal Type choice

    list comes up w ith t he current sett ing h ighlight ed. For

    example:

    4. Point to t he correct setting f or your connection and press

    MENU. As soon as you select a choice, the TV saves your

    change, and you are returned to the previous menu.

    5. Point t o Exitand press MENU to return t o t he Main menu.

    6. Point t o Exitand press MENU to ret urn t o TV viewing.

    A numeric entry control panel is used to enter numbers or

    letters.

    For example, to set the current time:

    1. Press MENU to bring up t he Main menu.

    2. Point t o Timeand press MENU.

    3. Point t o Set Timeand press MENU. The Set Time numeri c

    entry control panel comes up. Notice the pointer underneath

    the first column.

    SET TIME

    : AMEnter01to12forthehour.Press MENU to exit.

    4. Press the up arrow t o enter a number in that column.

    5. Press the right arrow to move to t he next column, then press

    the up or dow n arrow t o enter a number.

    6. Repeat Step 5 until you have entered the hour and minute

    fo r t he current time. Noti ce that when you reach t he last

    column, pressing the up or dow n arrow changes whether t he

    time reads AM or PM.

    7. When you have entered the correct time, press MENU. You

    are returned t o t he Time menu.

    8. Point t o Exitand press MENU to return t o t he Main menu.

    9. Point t o Exitand press MENU to ret urn t o TV viewing.

    If the control panel is not set at thecurrent time, use the left arrow to goback over the columns and the uparrow to make changes.

    You can also enter numbers directlyby using the number buttons.

    The TV GUIDE Plus+ system is an interactive on-screen program

    guide that lists TV schedules for your area, and allows your TV

    direct control of a cable box and VCR. Use of the systems menus

    dif fers slight ly f rom the point and select method described

    earlier.

    There are t hree sect ions to a TV GUIDE Plus+ menu:

    A row of menus or options across the top of t he screen

    Program informat ion

    Channel l ist ing

    Unlike your TVs ot her menus, TV GUIDE Plus+ menus use two

    methods of pointing and selecting on the same screenone for

    menus or opt ions, and one fo r program inf ormation.

    To select menus or options:

    Press the right or left arrow to highlight your choice.

    Press MENU to select t he highlighted item. MENU is used only

    when selecting menus or opt ions.

    To make selecti ons in t he program list ing:

    Press the up or down arrow to select a channel. Press GUIDE or CLEAR to exit the TV GUIDE Plus+ system. The

    TV wi ll change to the channel you selected i f you used the

    GUIDE button. Pressing CLEAR returns to the original

    channel.

    TV GUIDE Plus+ screens illustrated inthis book are representations of whatyou are likely to see. Not all channels,programs, and TV GUIDE Plus+ infor-mation depicted w ill be available inyour area.

    Currently, program information caninclude title, brief description, timeprogram starts, length, and theavailability of closed captioning,stereo and additional programinformation.

    New features and options can bedownloaded to the TV GUIDE Plus+system, so these too are subject tochange.

    Your TV has sof tw are that t ells it what t o do, just

    like a comput er. The int eract ive setup rout ine t akesyou through t he steps needed t o configure t he TV:

    Select a menu language

    Search f or available channels

    Set up the TV GUIDE Plus+ system

    Set the t ime

    Set the VCR1 channel

    Set the DVD/VCR2 channel

    Set the SAT/CABLE channel

    Make the channel list and labels

    Complete the first two steps, Select

    Language and Auto Channel Search, to

    receive antenna or cable TV signals. After

    that, you can skip other steps and return

    to them at your convenience.

    Setup is accessed t hrough the M ain menu:

    1. Press MENU to bring up t he Main menu.

    2. Point t o Setupand press MENU. The f irst Setup screen comes

    up, asking you to conf irm t hat you want t o begin.

    The next part of the setup rout ine asks you if you want t he TV

    to search automatically for all channels available through your

    ant enna or cable TV system. This is sometimes called

    autoprogramming.

    The display gives you a progress report and t ells you w hen i t

    display your local program listings, and control your cable box

    and VCR.

    If you skip Auto Channel Search now,you can access it later through theChannel menu. You can also putchannels in memory manually usingList & Labels. See Quick Referenceformore details.

    Since the program informationprovided by TV Guide Plus+ is basedon your locale, you will need to runsetup again if you move.

    The f irst tw o screens ask f or info rmation about where you live.

    The universal remote can be programmed to control most

    brands of remot e cont rol lable VCRs and cable boxes. The remote

    is already programmed t o cont rol most RCA, GE and ProScan TVs

    VCRs, DVD players, laserdisc players and satellite receivers. Other

    manufacturers brands need to be programmed.

    a VCR

    To det ermine w hether t he universal remot e needs to be

    programmed, turn t he VCR on, poin t the remot e at t he VCR,and press the VCR1 button. Then press POWER or CH ^ (channel

    up) or CH v (channel dow n) to see if t he VCR responds to t he

    remote commands. If not , the remot e needs to be programmed.

    Follow these steps to program your universal remote to control

    your VCR:

    1. Turn on the VCR to be programmed.

    2. Look up your VCR brand and code number(s) on the code list

    on t he next page.

    3. Press and hold the VCR1 button on the remote.4. Enter the two-digit code from the code list.

    5. Release VCR1 then press POWER to see if the VCR responds

    to t he remote commands. If i t doesnt , tr y pressing VCR1 and

    POWER to see if the VCR responds.

    6. Repeat t hese steps using t he next code listed for your brand,

    unt il the VCR responds to t he remot e commands.

    pr imary functions of an RCA, GE, or ProScan DVD player. If you

    POWER When in TV mode, turns off the TV. In VCR mode, and if

    programmed, tu rns on and off most VCRs.

    VCR1 If programmed, t urns on VCR and pu ts the remote in VCR

    mode. Also t urns on the TV.

    SAT CABLE If programmed, tu rns on satell it e receiver or cable

    box. Put s the remot e in SAT CABLE mode. Also t urns on the TV.

    DVDVCR2 If p rogrammed, t urns on DVD player or second VCR

    or laserdisc player. Put s the remot e in DVDVCR2 mode. Also

    turns on t he TV.

    AUDIO If programmed, turns on RCA audio component and put s

    the remot e in audio mode.

    TV Turns on t he TV and put s the remot e in TV mode. Also

    displays channel information.

    REVERSE, PLAY, FORWARD, RECVCR+, STOP, PAUSE If

    programmed, provides transport cont rol fo r some remote-

    controllable VCRs, DVD players, laserdisc players, tape decks, and

    CD players. Pressing REC VCR+ when using the TV GUIDE+ system

    sets the VCR to record a program.

    VOL or VOL + Decreases or increases the TVs volume.

    CH ^ or CH v Scans up or dow n through t he current channel l ist.Press once to change t he channel up or dow n; press and hold to

    cont inue changing channels.

    INFO Brings up channel inf ormation. Press repeatedly to see

    detailed program information, if available.

    SKIP Press once before changing channels and the TV wi ll wait

    30 seconds before ret urning you to the original channel. Press

    repeatedly to add more time.

    M UTE Reduces the TVs volume t o i ts minimum level. Press

    again to resto re the volume.

    GO BACK Returns you t o t he previous channel.

    (0-9) Number Butt ons Ent ers channel numbers and t ime

    sett ings directly though t he remote control. To enter a t wo-digit

    channel, press the tw o digit s. To enter a three-dig it channel,

    press and hold the first digit, then add the second two. Example:

    to tune to channel 123, press and hold 1, press 2, then press 3.

    FAV INPUT In TV mode, press to toggle t hrough the available

    ANTENNA Funct ions as TV/VCR but ton in VCR mode and TV/

    CLEAR Removes any menu or display from the screen and

    returns you t o TV viewing.

    M ENUSELECT Brings up t he Main menu. When in t he menu

    RESET Resets picture quali ty cont rols to t he Bright Light ing

    Picture Control Preset. Point and select to choose a di ff erent

    Picture Control Preset.

    M OVE (Arrow s) Used to point to di ff erent i tems in the menu

    system. Also used to adjust the menu controls. Also move the PIP

    window when no menus are on t he screen.

    PIP Brings up t he small picture-in-pictu re window. Press again t o

    remove the PIP window.

    SOUND Press once to display the audio processor control panel.

    Point and select t o choose a dif ferent processor or press CLEAR to

    exit.

    SWAP Swaps the main picture with the PIP window.

    CH CTRL Selects the picture window, (that is, the main or PIP

    window ) that is changed by the CH ^ (channel up) or CH v

    (channel dow n) but tons.

    GUIDE Brings up TV GUIDE Plus+ menus.In SATCABLE mode

    brings up available on-screen guides.

    INPUT 1 Lets you connect a video component such as a VCR,

    satell it e receiver, DVD player or laserd isc player.

    L/MONO Provides lef t aud io connection. Or, if you areconnecting a mono component, use the L/MONO input. The

    RIGHT Provides right audio connection. The right audio

    connecto r i s usually red.

    VIDEO Provides video connection. The video connector is

    S-VIDEO Lets you connect a component wit h S-Video

    VCR. When using S-Video, make sure to connect the three

    audio/video cables as well as the S-Video connector.

    INPUT 2 Provides a connect ion for a second video component

    such as a VCR, satellite receiver, DVD player or laserdisc player.

    L/MONO Provides lef t aud io connection. Or, if you are

    connecting a mono component, use the L/MONO input. The

    left audio connecto r is usually whit e.

    RIGHT Provides right audio connection. The right audio

    VIDEO Provides video connection. The video connector is

    AUDIO OUTPUT Provides variable-cont rol led or f ixed-level

    stereo audio output .

    Variable output is ideal when connecting the TV to anamplif ier that does not have it s own volume cont rol or

    remote control.

    Fixed out put is ideal w hen connect ing to an A/V receiver or

    amplif ier that has it s own remote cont rol.

    You can choose the type of audio output by selecting the Audio

    Outpu t & Speakers cont rol panel in t he Audio menu.

    VCR CONTROL Lets you connect t he TV GUIDE Plus+ cont ro ller,

    which allow s direct cont rol o f your cable box and VCR.

    To connect an amplified subwoofer tothe TV, use the left (L) AUDIO OUTPUTjack.

    There are several indicators that come up when you change

    channels, press the INFO button, or press the TV button. This

    display is called the Channel Marker.

    12:01 Displays the current t ime.

    CC Displayed when Closed Capt ion ing is available on t he current

    channel.

    VCR1 Displays the label assigned t o t he current channel.

    VID1 Displays the current channel or input channel.

    M ute (or Stereo) Mute is displayed w hen you mut e the audio.

    Stereo is displayed when t he current channel is broadcast ing inStereo.

    SAP Displayed w hen t he current channel is broadcasti ng SAP

    (Second Audio Program) in formation.

    PIP 59 (PIP Chan) Displays the current PIP channel.

    menu commands. These commands are organized inthe chapter by their location in the M ain menu.

    Audio Contains the cont rols that let you adjustthe way the TV sounds.

    Screen Cont ains the cont rols that let you adjustthe closed-capt ion mode and display.

    Channel Cont ains all the commands used t ocont rol your channels, including custom-building

    Mute Press MENU to reduce the TVs volume to its minimum

    level. Press MENU again to restore the volume.

    Tone Controls Displays the slider contr ols for adjust ing the TVs

    treble, bass and balance.

    Audio Processor Displays a choice list of available audio modes,

    which control the way the sound comes through your speakers.

    Mono Plays the sound in mono only. Use th is sett ing when

    receiving broadcasts wit h weak stereo signals .

    Stereo Split s the incoming stereo audio signal into lef t and

    right channels. Most TV programs and recorded materials

    have stereo audio. The TV displays the w ord STEREO when

    you tune to a program t hat i s broadcast in stereo.

    SRS Stereo ( ) SRS* is an audio processing technology that

    adds greater depth and stereo separation t o stereo aud io

    signals.

    Enhanced SRS Stereo Enhances the SRS signal to give the

    impression of even greater depth and stereo separation.

    Sound Logic Stereo Sound Logic monit ors a programs

    audio t rack and limit s the volume to a minimum and

    maximum volume range. Whenever you adjust the volume on

    the TV, the minimum and maximum volume range adjusts, too.

    Second Audio Program (SAP) Plays the programs audio in

    a second language, if one is available. The TV displays the

    word SAP when you tune to a program t hat i s broadcast w ith

    SAP info rmat ion. SAP audio is broadcast in mono.

    Audio Output & Speakers Displays a choice list that lets you

    turn the TVs int ernal speakers on or of f and set t he audio

    out put s to fi xed-level or variable cont rol l evel.

    Variable Output, Speakers On This sett ing turns the TVs

    speakers on and allow s variable out put f rom the TVs audioout put jacks.

    Variable Output, Speakers Off This sett ing turns the TVs

    speakers off and allows variable output from the TVs audio

    out put jacks.

    Fixed Output, Speakers Off This sett ing tu rns the TVs

    speakers off and allows fixed output from the TVs audio

    out put jacks.

    Tint Adjusts the balance between the red and green levels.

    Black Level Adjusts the brightness of the picture.

    Sharpness Adjusts the crispness of edges in the picture.

    Auto Color Displays a choice list that lets you t urn on t he

    feature t hat aut omatically corrects the color of the picture. (Thisis especially usefu l fo r t racking realisti c flesh t one colo rs as you

    swit ch f rom channel t o channel.) Choose Onor Off, depending

    on your pref erence. Its your choice.

    Color Warmt h Displays a choice list that lets you set one of

    th ree automatic color adjustments: Coolfor a more blue palette

    of picture colors; Normal; and Warmfor a more red palett e of

    picture colors.

    Picture Control Presets Displays a choice list that lets you

    select one of three preset p icture sett ings: Bright Light ing,

    Normal Light ingor Soft Light ing. Choose the setting that is bestfor your viewing environment.

    Video Noise Reduction Displays a choice list that let s you t urn

    on t he feature t hat automatically reduces noise, or snow, from

    the pictu re.

    Picture Tilt (31 screen size or above only) Your TV has an

    extra-large picture tube (31 or above), which makes it

    vulnerable to the effects of the Earths magnetic field. You may

    need to adjust t he pictu re tilt . Use the left and right arrow

    Signal Type Displays a choice list that lets you select the

    current antenna type. This opt ion does not appear w hen the TV

    GUIDE Plus+ system is set up .

    UHF/VHF Antenna Choose this if you are current ly using an

    off-air antenna for TV signals.

    Cable TV Choose this if you are current ly using cable or a

    cable box for TV signals.

    Aut o Channel Search Tells the TV to search aut omat ically for

    all t he channels available through t he antenna input . When the

    TV finds an acti ve channel, it places it in t he channel l ist ; inact ive

    channels (weak stat ions or channels w it h no signal at all ) wi ll beremoved f rom t he channel list.

    List and Labels Displays a cont rol panel t hat lets you custom-

    bui ld your Normal channel l ist and choose a six-character label

    for each channel. Follow the on-screen directions to enter your

    channels and other info rmation.

    Chan # Use the up and dow n arrows to scroll up and down

    through the channel scan list . You can enter t he channel

    number directly using t he number but tons.

    Norm al List Only the channels included in the Normal l ist

    are available w hen you scan up and dow n using the CHANbut tons. Use the up and dow n arrows to indicate w hether

    the channel number indicated is included (Yes) or is not

    included (No) in the Normal channel list.

    Chan Labels Use the up and down arrow s to enter a six-

    character label f or each channel. Hold the but ton down t o

    scroll quickly through the characters. Press RESET to clear a

    label. The TV can store up to 27 labels in memory.

    Channel Directory Displays all o f the labeled channels. In the

    Channel Directory cont rol panel, you can select a channel by

    entering the channel number, or by pressing MENU to return tothe current channel. This option does not appear when the TV

    GUIDE Plus+ system is set up .

    Auto Tuning Displays a choice list t hat lets you set up the TV to

    The choices are:

    Not Connected Choose thi s if you do not have a

    back of t he TV, or if you dont want the TV to t une to a

    channel when the particular component button is pressed.

    Channel 2 (SAT/Cable only) Choose th is if your component

    is connected to t he antenna jack on t he back of the TV, and

    you want t he TV to tune to channel 2 when you p ress the

    specified component button. Reminder: Make sure the

    components Ch 2/3/4 switch is set to channel 2.

    Channel 3 Choose th is if your component is connected to

    the antenna jack on the back of the TV, and you want the TV

    to tune to channel 3 when you press the specif ied

    component but ton. Reminder: Make sure the component s

    Ch 3/4 swit ch is set to channel 3.

    Channel 4 Choose th is if your component is connected to

    the antenna jack on the back of the TV, and you want the TV

    Parent Approved Channels Displays a control panel that lets

    you decide what channels can be viewed or selected using the

    TVs fr ont panel cont rols.

    Chan # Use the up and dow n arrows to scroll up and down

    through the channel scan list. You can enter the channel

    number di rectly using t he number but tons.

    Parent Approved Use the up and down arrow s to choose

    whether the channel indicated should be show n when the

    Channel Block f eature is turned on . Select Yesto indicatethat the channel can be show n at any time, regardless of

    whether Channel Block is turned on. Select Noto indicate

    that the f ront panel cannot tune t o t hat channel w hen

    Channel Block is turned on. Important: You must t urn t he

    Channel Block feature on. (See Channel Block, below.)

    Channel Block Displays a cont rol panel t hat lets you decide

    when a channel can be viewed.

    Off All channels are available
