The world today is an increasingly complex and dynamic place. Life is hectic and stress dictates the pace. We find ourselves constantly exposed to an unending stream of stimuli. Around us, things get faster, louder, crazier all the time. Globalisation is robbing us of our native roots, constants we could once rely on no longer exist and the family institution is growing fragile. Simply having time for our children is becoming a luxury. Individualisation, separation, isolation: it’s every man for himself and everyone’s alone. Alone in front of the computer screen, alone with a cup of coffee, alone on the bike, alone on the move. Entertainment dominates the media, people smiling happily out at us, chit-chat in-

stead of meaningful discussion – don’t bother looking for substance beneath the surface be-cause you won’t find it. Channel-hopping is the norm, our attention span shrinks, our powers of imagination shrivel. Values have no bearing today, people care about little more than rankings, hits, celebrities and passing concerns. Restless-ness, helplessness, disorientation. What is real? What is truly important? What will count to-morrow? Wouldn’t we be wiser to focus on the important things, the enduring things? Simply to pause for a moment and do something com-pletely different . . .
