6.1. Laboratoare INCDFM de cercetare-dezvoltare
Laboratorul 10-Materiale si structuri multifunctionale
Laboratorul este dedicat cercetarii fundamentale si aplicate in domeniul materialelor oxidice cu proprietati dielectrice, feroelectrice, piezoelectrice, semiconductoare si in domeniul nanostructurilor complexe si dispositive bazate pe nanostructuri. Exista doua directii principale de cercetare:
1. Producerea si caracterizarea unor dispositive bazate pe nano-obiecte , de ex.: tranzistori pentru bio-senzori bazati pe nanofire, surse de lumina ultraminiaturizate bazate pe nanofibre, LED-uri bazate pe matrici de nanofire si straturi subtiri organice, cristale fotonice fabricate folosind nanosfere, etc
2. Producerea si caracterizarea unor materiale perovskite masive si straturi subtiri cu proprietati feroelectrice, piezolectrice sau multiferoice cu aplicatii in domenii precum tehnologia informatiei, comunicatiile in domeniul microundelor sau senzoristica.
Laboratorul are o infrastructura foarte buna, incluzand instrumente de ultima generatie printre care: sistemul de depunere cu laser pulsat; RF sputtering; microscopul electronic de baleiaj (SEM); microscopul de microfluorescenta; crioprobere cu campuri magnetice verticale si orizontale si facilitati de iluminare cu radiatie UV; analizor vectorial de retele pana la 325 GHz; spectrometru de THz pana la 7 THz; elipsometru; instalatie pentru dicroism magnetic,etc.
Sistemul de depunere cu laser pulsat (Pulsed Laser Deposition System – PLD)pentru depunerea de straturi subtiri si multistraturi de materiale oxidice, in special feroelectrici si multiferoici.

Laboratorul 20-Magnetism si supraconductibilitate
Laboratorul este dedicat cercetarii in domeniul materialelor cu proprietati magnetice sau supraconductoare. Procesul de cercetare acopera toate etapele de la preparare (materiale masive, straturi subtiri sau nanostructuri ) la caracterizare structurala, fiind finalizat cu analiza aprofundata a proprietatilor magnetice si superconductoare. Cercetarea este focalizata asupra nanostructurilor magnetice, multistraturi magnetice, materiale pentru magnetorezistenta colosala (CMR), magnetorezistenta gigant (GMR) si magnetorezistenta prin tunelare (TMR), supraconductori de temperaturi ridicate, noi materiale supraconductoare pentru aplicatii electronice. .
Spark Plasma Sintering
Printre echipamentele de cercetare importante sunt: instalatie de spark plasma sintering; instalatie de sinterizare in camp de microunde; instalatie de melt spinning; doua sisteme Vibrating Sample Magnetometer ( VSM ) pentru campuri magnetice pana la 9 Tesla; sisteme Mossbauer cu diferite accesorii pentru efectuarea de masuratori la temperaturi variable (4.5 K – 1000 K) si in campuri aplicate, prin detectia de radiatie gamma/ radiatie X/ electroni de conversie; un sistem complex de masura a proprietatilor fizice (PPMS) cu campuri magnetice pana la 14 Tesla; un sistem de magnetometrie de tip SQUID ( Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) si o instalatie de producere a He lichid (18 l /24 h).
Laboratorul 30-Fizica starii condensate la nivel nano
Cele 3 grupuri ale Lab 30 desfasoara studii experimentale complexe ale suprafetelor, interfetelor, straturilor subtiri si a nanostrucuturilor pe baza de Ge si Si amorf, precum si cercetari teoretice in vederea modelarii sistemelor mezoscopice. Diverse tipuri de materiale

nanostructurate (de ex. nanostructuri si nanocompozite, filme subtiri magnetice, acoperiri dure) sunt preparate prin metode avansate. Subiectele de investigare experimentala sunt directionate spre proprietatile si procesele specifice sistemelor cu dimensionalitate redusa, fiind sprijinite si de modelari privind compozitia si structura, transportul electric si fototransportul, proprietatile magnetice si procesele de suprafata/interfata, fenomene de captura. Studiile teoretice vizeaza transportul electronic stationar si/sau dependent de timp in sisteme mezoscopice puternic confinate, dinamica de spin si efectele de interferenta cuantica.
Grupul de fizica suprafetei si spectroscopie de raze X are la dispozitie un “cluster” special pentru studierea in-situ a suprafetelor, avand ca instalatie centrala o camera de depunere MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy). Clusterul lucreaza in ultravid inalt (UHV 10-10 - 10-11 mbari) si ofera urmatoarele procedee de caracterizare: RHEED (Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction); LEED (Low Energy Electron Diffraction); XPS (X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy); SARPES (Spin Angular Resonant Photoelectron Spectroscopy); STM (Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy). Un microscop de tip Low-Energy Electron Microscopy- Photoelectron Electron Microscopy (LEEM-PEEM) completeaza acest cluster. Alte echipamente sunt: o instalatie complexa de depunere RF, dotata cu spectroscopie Auger si LEEM; un sistem de masuratori Hall; o linie de masuratori electrice si fotoelectrice.

Laboratorul 40-Procese optice in materiale nanostructurate
Acest laborator este aproape in intregime dedicat metodelor de investigare optica aplicate la materiale, cu focalizare pe nanostructuri si nanocompozite. Alte subiecte de cercetare sunt legate de prepararea si caracterizarea structurilor nanometrice semiconductoare, a polimerilor cu proprietati speciale, electrochimiei si producerii si caracterizarii de sticle calcogenice. Principalele echipamente folosite pentru caracterizarea optica a materialelor investigate sunt: spectrofotometre de absorbtie UV-Vis-NIR si FTIR, microscopul de vizualizare FTIR, spectrometru FTRaman echipat cu un laser YAG : Nd, spectrofotometru Raman confocal echipat cu laseri cu Ar si Kr, SNOM (Scanning Near-

Field Optical Microscope) cuplat cu AFM (Atomic Force Microscope), instalatii pentru foto- si termoluminescenta, montaje experimentale pentru fotoconductie si simulatorul solar. Alte echipamente folosite la caracterizarea si/sau prepararea materialelor studiate sunt : instalatia pentru spectroscopie dielectrica de banda larga, sistemul pentru determinarea unghiului de contact, echipament de depunere prin evaporarea in vid pentru materiale organice, echipamente pentru depunerea de filme Langmuir-Blodgett si un potentiostat/galvanostat pentru prepararea de materiale compozite si testarea acestora ca materiale de electrod in baterii si supercapacitori.
Laboratorul 50 - Structuri atomice si defecte in materiale avansate
Acest laborator este dedicat in principal investigatiilor structurale prin tehnici de caracterizare avansata cum sunt microscopia electronica prin transmisie (TEM), rezonanta electronica paramagnetica (EPR), spectroscopia Mössbauer. Activitatea laboratorului include de asemenea si sinteza de materiale nanostructurate prin metoda hidrotermala sau coprecipitare. Alte subiecte de cercetare importante sunt legate de domeniile senzorilor de gaze si fotocatalizei.

Printre echipamentele importante sunt: doua microscoape electronice analitice prin transmisie; un sistem dual SEM-FIB; echipamente EPR lucrand in diverse benzi de microunde, cu unda continua sau in pulsuri; difractometre de raze X pentru pulberi si straturi subtiri; echipamente pentru sinteza hidroterma/solvotermala si coprecipitare etc. Un nou microscop TEM de rezolutie atomica (AHR-TEM) a fost recent instalat si pus in functie. Instrumentul este prevazut cu un corector al aberatiei de sfericitate pentru microsonda de electroni si cu facilitati de analiza EDS si EELS. Alt echipament nou este sistemul dual SEM-FIB instalat in noua “camera curata” (clean room), alaturi de echipamente noi pentru fotolitografie si nanolitografie.
Microscop electronic analitic de inalta rezolutie prin transmisie cu corector al aberatiei de sfericitate pentru microsonda de electroni.
Activitatea de cercetare se refera in principal la proprietatile fizice (structura, proprietati electrice, proprietati optice) in materiale avansate, ca efect al dimensionalitatii reduse (nanostructuri, straturi subtiri) sau rezultate in urma procesarii defectelor structurale. Astfel, eforturile de cercetare vizeaza descoperirea, investigarea si manipularea de proprietati fizice la scala nanometrica si atomica pentru dezvoltarea si caracterizarea de noi materiale (dielectrici, semiconductori, aliaje, ceramici) pentru diverse aplicatii in tehnologia semiconductorilor, senzoristica de gaze, detectori de radiatii, telecomunicatii.

6.2 Laboratoare INCDFM de încercări acreditate
6.2.1 Laboratorul INDETIR pentru încercări specifice detectorilor de infraroşu
A fost realizată crearea unui laborator acreditat pentru încercări specifice detectorilor în infraroşu pentru aplicaţii, în principal pentru protecţia atmosferei şi controlul poluării.
Domeniul de aplicare a spectrometriei de infraroşu este foarte larg, gama de compuşi analizaţi incluzând gaze: CO, CO2, N2O, NH3, compuşi organici volatili (toluen, propanol, metoxibenzen), lichide şi solide. Toate aceste aplicaţii folosesc aparate ale căror componente principale sunt: detectori în domeniul infraroşu, sursă de lumină în domeniul infraroşu şi un filtru specific pentru lungimea de undă dorită. Detectorii sunt o componentă critică în acest ansamblu, testarea acestora fiind esenţială pentru determinarea cantitativă a conţinutului de substanţă de analizat cu precizie maximă. S-a realizat completarea dotării laboratorului la standardul necesar pentru acreditarea ca laborator de încercări specifice pentru detectorii de infraroşu . În cadrul laboratorului au fost asimilate şi implementate metode de încercare (testare), evaluare şi certificare prevăzute în standardul SR EN 61920 „Aplicaţii în infraroşu în mod neghidat”, standard românesc adoptat prin metoda confirmării, precum şi de dezvoltarea serviciilor de evaluare corespunzătoare la nivel naţional. Acest standard se referă la emiţători şi receptori, cu precădere pentru aplicaţii de infraroşu în mod neghidat clasificaţi, în şapte grupe principale (de zece ani) în studierea, fabricarea şi testarea de detectori atât pentru domeniul de infraroşu apropiat (detectori de PbS), cât şi pentru cel de infraroşu mediu (detectori piroelectrici). Pe lângă implementarea metodelor descrise în standardul sus-menţionat laboartorul va elabora metode optime de testare, evaluare şi certificare ale detectorilor pentru aplicaţii de spectrometrie prin extinderea metodelor prevăzute de standardul SR EN 61920. Laboratorul INDETIR a fost acreditat conform cerinţelor standardului SR EN ISO / CEI 17025:2005. Acesta este primul laborator din România pentru încercări specifice detectorilor de infraroşu şi va servi ca bază pentru extinderea domeniului de aplicare a încercărilor, pentru toate organismele interesate de activitatea de evaluare a conformităţii detectorilor de infraroşu cu standardele internaţionale in vigoare.

6.2.2 Laboratorul MAAS acreditat pentru încercări prin X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS)
Laboratorul MAAS a fost acreditat în concordanţă cu SR EN ISO / CEI 17025:2005 pentru încercări prin XPS ca sprijin în implementarea directivelor 2002/95/UE (RoHS) şi 2002/96/EC (WEE).
În acest scop au fost urmărite următoarele obiective:
-achiziţia unor componente pentru echipamentul XPS existent ( tip VG ESCA Mark II) şi a altor componente necesare îmbunătăţirii parametrilor de performanţă ai metodei de încercare complexă;
-punerea la punct şi validarea metodei complexe de identificarea şi stabilirea compoziţiei chimice a suprafeţelor solide, prin tehnica spectroscopiei de fotoelectroni;
-documentarea sistemului de management referitor la calitate conform SR EN ISO / CEI 17025:2005;
-implementarea sistemului calităţii şi revizuirea sistemului documentat;
-achiziţia de materiale consumabile specifice, Materiale de Referinţă şi Materiale de Referinţă Certificate (MRC);
-acreditarea încercării complexe de determinare a metalelor şi nemetalelor din diferite materiale (metale şi aliaje inclusiv oţeluri şi fonte, semiconductori, pulberi, materiale plastice, etc.).

În final, s-a obţinut acreditarea laboratorului MAAS conform cerinţelor standardului SR EN ISO / CEI 17025:2005. Componentele care au fost achiziţionate pentru up-gradarea echipamentului XPS existent inclusiv software-ul specializat asigură cerinţele minime de justeţe, fidelitate şi incertitudine impuse de standardele de încercare şi directivele RoHs şi WEEE.

6.3 Instalaţii de interes naţional

În cursul anului 2004, prin emiterea Hotărârii de Guvern HG - 1428 / 2.09.2004, publicată în Monitorul Oficial nr. 854 din 17 sept 2004, instalaţia VG ESCA 3 MkII (Spectroscop cu emisie de fotoelectroni, XPS), din dotarea INCDFM (Institutul Naţional de Cercetare Dezvoltare pt. Fizica Materialelor), a fost inclusă pe lista instalaţiilor de interes naţional., în conformitate cu prevederile O.M nr. 3848/14.05.2004 (referitor la criteriile de selecţie).

În ultimii ani au fost achiziţionate continuu repere şi piese de schimb de fabricaţie foarte recentă, ceea ce a permis atât menţinerea instalaţiei la un nivel optim de funcţionare, cât şi obţinerea unor rezultate experimentale care să fie pe linia exigenţelor din acest domeniu.
Instalaţia a funcţionat, fără a se percepe plăţi de către INCDFM, în beneficiul unor instituţii de învăţământ superior : Univ. Bucureşti - Fac.Fizică, Fac Chimie, Univ. Politehnică Bucureşti, Univ. Iaşi – Alexandru Ioan Cuza, Univ. Cluj-Napoca, Univ. Piteşti, Univ. Ploieşti, Institutul Medico-Farmaceutic Bucureşti. Au fost şi sunt efectuate atât ore de laborator, pentru instruirea unor grupe de studenţi, cât şi unele lucrări experimentale ajutătoare pentru masteranzi şi tineri cercetători. De asemenea, au fost efectuate măsurători şi pentru proiecte de cercetare obţinute în cadrul unor institute naţionale de cercetare-dezvoltare (INCDFLPR, INOE 2000, IFIN-HH, ICF - I.G. Murgulescu, IMNR, INCS etc.).

Advanced workshop on solar energy conversion
21-23 May 2012, Bucharest, Romania Renewable energy resources are needed to meet our clean energy demand. Since any long term energy supply must be based on solar energy, photovoltaic energy conversion will become indispensable in the future.
The transition from the conventional energy, based on fossil fuels or nuclear fission, to sustainable energies, is presently hampered by the low efficiencies or high costs of the available materials. The development of new materials by engineering their structure at the nano-scale is recognized to be the key issue which could increase the performance of both renewable energy conversion and energy storage. In this sense, new materials are a of crucial importance for a possible transition towards a more sustainable energy economy.
The Workshop will consist of invited lectures addressed by leading researchers in the field, as well as contributed oral presentations. Also, a poster session will be organized.
The main topics covered in this workshop are:

9. Concluzii. Perspective
In anul 2012, INCDFM a publicat 180 de lucrari in reviste ISI care echivaleaza cu un factor de impact cumulat de 377.2, cel mai ridicat din istoria institutului. Trebuie mentionat ca la numarul de lucrari de mai sus, se vor mai adauga si alte lucrari in perioada imediat urmatoare(provenind din publicatiile care apar cu intarziere) si ca déjà sunt aparute sau acceptate pentru 2013 alte 33 de lucrari. Fiind vorba de un an similar cu 2011 din punct de vedere al outputului stiintific, insasi acest fapt arata consolidarea performantei stiintifice , comparativ cu anii 2009,2010 cand factorul de impact cumulat era aproximativ jumatate din cel de astazi. O alta observatie importanta o reprezinta tendinta de publicare in reviste internationale cu factori de impact din ce in ce mai mari. Daca in anii 2009-2010, factorul de impact cumulat al revistelor cu FI>2 era de cca 75, respective 120, , acesta a crescut la cca 200 in 2011 si la cca 240 in 2012, neluand in considerare articolele publicate in doua reviste cu FI deosebit de mari (cca 54 in 2011 si cca 36 in 2012).. Rezulta deci ca peste 60% din factorul de impact cumulat rezulta astazi din articole publicare in reviste dintre cele mai prestigioase aparute in intreaga lume. Numarul de citari in anul 2012 in reviste de specialitate cotate ISI a fost de aproape 1600 (dupa Web of Science) si peste 2000 (dupa Scopus). In cadrul unor conferinte internationale au fost prezentate 176 de comunicari stiintifice. In 2012 au fost obtinute 2 brevete si au fost depuse 5 cereri de brevet. Un numar de 19 produse si 10 tehnologii au rezultat din cercetarile efectuate iar 9 servicii au fost oferite prin contract agentilor economici. In incheiere, mentionam ca in cursul anului 2012, INCDFM a fost supus unui proces de certificare institutionala in urma caruia a obtinut calificativul maxim A+. Luand in considerare cele de mai sus, echipa manageriala spera ca anul 2013 sa fie un an cel putin la fel de bun ca 2012, atat din punct de vedere al finantarii cercetarii cat si privitor la rezultatele pe care le va obtine institutul.

-Pulberi antibacteriene de hidroxiapatita dopata cu argint – Au fost realizate prin coprecipitare si testate biologic. Prezinta proprietati antibacteriene incepand de la concentratii mici de argint in hydroxiapatita (Ca10-x Agx(PO4)6(OH)2 , xAg ≥ 0.02).

-Retea de antene cu rezonatori dielectrici cu 4 elemente Rezonatori dielectrici cilindrici din material (Zr0.8 Sn 0.2)TiO4 cu permitivitate electrica relativa εr = 36 si tangenta unghiului de pierderi de tg δ = 2,8 10-4 masurate la 4 GHz. Antena lucreaza in banda ISM, frecventa centrala a antenei 2.44 GHz, largime de banda mai mare de 110 MHz. Control al frecventei modurilor HEM11 si TE01 cu discuri conductoare. -Confectionarea de electrozi din GaAs – contractele economice nr.302/17.02.2012 si nr. 1079/11.07.2012, , beneficiar Institutul de Chimie Fizica “Ilie Murgulescu”. - Componente de W cu forme complexe pentru macheta de divertor racit cu He in cadrul proiectului de realizare a reactorului de fuziune termonucleara DEMO. Divertorul constituie partea cea mai expusa bombardamentului cu fluxuri de radiatie si pulsuri termice de pana la 20 MW//m2 in cadrul reactorului. Materialele sunt realizate prin metoda FAST intr-un singur pas in matrite speciale de grafit. -Materiale cu gradient functional W-Eurofer cu forme diferite in vederea testelor mecanice si termice. Astfel de materiale sunt utilizate ca piese in cadrul armurii vasului care contine plasma in reactoare de fuziune si trebuie sa realizeze o jonctiune compatibila termic si mecanic cu materialele structurale care i ntra in componenta structurii de rezistenta a reactorului. Aceste materiale sunt realizate prin sinterizare SPS in conditii temperatura-presiune precise pentru a asigura atat morfologia si proprietatile termice proiectate. -Materiale compozite complexe metalo-ceramice si ceramice multicomponente. Aceste materiale sunt destinate aplicatiilor in domenii extreme din domeniul energetic sau nuclear si permit ajustarea proprietatilor in functie de componentele incluse si morfologia probelor. Realizarea lor este facuta prin procese multiple din domeniul metalurgiei pulberilor incluzand aliere mecanica, sinterizare asistata de camp electric, microunde si presiune in cadrul infrastructurii HOTMAT: -Prepararea unor pulberi si ceramici dielectrice de titanat de bariu dopat cu staniu (BaTi1-xSnxTiO3, x = 0.13, prescurtat BTS0.13) prin utilizarea metodei coprecipitarii cu acid oxalic. -Sticle cu compozitia (95SiO2–5CaF2) (mol%) nedopate si dopate cu 1mol% pamanturi rare (Eu, Sm, Yb-Er) preparate prin metoda sol-gel. -Structuri de multistrat constand din straturi monomoleculare de acid stearic şi diverse porfirine preparate prin metoda Langmuir-Blodgett -Fire submicronice multistrat Pd/ZnO/Pd si Pd/ZnO:Mn:Cu/Pd folosind metoda electrochimica si ca sabloane, membrane de policarbonat -Aplicarea metodei ”Spark Plasma Sintering” (SPS) la amestecuri de pulberi din MgB2, SiC (30 nm - dimensiunea medie de graunte) si telur

-Prepararea pulberilor de BaxSr1-xFe12O19 (x=0.05, 0.15, 0.25, 0.35) prin metoda sol-gel si prin metoda reactiei in faza solida ; confectionarea pastilelor ceramice din pulberi prin presare uniaxiala urmata de presare izostatica la rece si sinterizare la 1200 °C, timp de 4 ore - Sinteza chimica umeda pentru obtinerea compusului organometalic mer-Alq3 si sinteza fizico-chimica prin reactie in faza solida pentru obtinerea unui compus mixt merdional-facial de Alq3.
-S-au preparat probe de Ba(Mg1/3 Ta2/3)O3 prezentand pierderi foarte mici in microunde (produsul Qxf pana la 210000 GHz pentru temperatura de sinterizare de 1600 oC, permitivitate electrica relativa in microunde ~ 24) . - Antene si retele de antene cu directivitate ridicata cu rezonatori de titanat de Zr si Sn: (Zr0.8Sn0.2)TiO4 . -Procedee fizico-chimice pentru obtinerea materialelor stocatoare de hidrogen inglobate in matrici mezoporoase utilizabile pentru alimentarea pilelor de combustie. -Obtinerea si caracterizarea materialelor piezoceramice cu anizotropie structurala si piezoelectrica ridicata -Pachet software de simulare a profilelor de interdifuzie la interfata prin analiza transformatelor Laplace ale spectrelor de electroni. -Pachet software de analiza a maximelor pre-edge in spectroscopia de absorbtie X Tehnologii -Tehnologie de realizare a pulberilor antibacteriene de hidroxiapatita dopata cu argint – Sinteza prin coprecipitare a hidroxiapatitei dopate cu argint, (Ca10-xAgx)(PO4)6(OH)2, cu xAg ≥ 0 si [Ca+Ag] /P = 1.67. Materialul rezultat a fost uscat la 1000C pentru 72h. -Tehnologie de realizare a compozitelor complexe metalo-ceramice si ceramice multicomponent in matrice cu densitati variabile. Domeniu de utilizare: materiale refractare, materiale pentru energie, materiale pentru domeniul nuclear. -Tehnologie de imbinare a materialeor cu proprietati diferite prin brazare cu folii sau pulberi prin incalzire in regim de pulsuri electrice. Domeniu de utilizare: imbinarea materialelor refractare cu aplicatii diverse.

Studii si analize structurale si compozitionale de mare acuratete pentru suprafetele si interfetele dintr-o clasa extinsa de materiale cu instalatia de interes national VG Scientific ESCA 3 MkII prin tehnica de spectroscopie de raze X cu emisie de fotoelectroni - XPS.
Instalaţia a funcţionat si în beneficiul unor instituţii de învaţamânt superior: Univ. Bucureşti- Fac.Fizică, Fac Chimie, Univ. Politehnica
Bucureşti, Univ. Iaşi – Alexandru Ioan Cuza, Univ. Cluj-Napoca, Univ. Pitesti, Univ. Ploiesti, Institutul Medico-Farmaceutic Bucuresti. Au fost efectuate atat ore de laborator, pentru instruirea unor grupe de studenti, cat si unele lucrari experimentale ajutatoare pentru masteranzi si tineri cercetatori.
De asemenea au fost efectuate masuratori şi pentru proiecte de cercetare obtinute in cadrul unor institute nationale de cercetare-dezvoltare (INCDFLPR, INOE 2000, IFIN HH, ICF - I.G. Murgulescu, IMNR, INCS etc.). S-a urmarit si indeplinirea unor sarcini deja asumate în cadrul multiplelor convenţii de cooperare bi sau multilaterale cu universităţi şi institute de cercetare din străinătate şi evident în cadrul unor proiecte de tip NATO, CORINT, DFG, FP V, FP6, EURATOM, COST, BRANCUSI, COPBIL etc. In cursul anilor 2008-2009, prin efortul propriu al Colectivului din INCDFM, a fost acreditata RENAR o procedura de analiza a suprafetelor, utilizand instalatia XPS si metoda de lucru elaborata in cadrul noului Colectiv/Lab. 70 (MAAS). Principiul metodei

Suprafata investigata este iradiata cu un fascicul de raze X. Fotonii X incidenti sunt absorbiti, prin efect fotoelectric, pe toate paturile atomilor din material. Energia cinetica a electronilor eliberati (fotoelectroni), reprezinta o masura a energiilor de legatura în atomii emitatori. Principiul spectroscopiei XPS consta din determinarea acestor energii, prin detectia fotoelectronilor si analiza lor dupa energiile cinetice. Informatie furnizata
o Identificare de elemente Liniile de emisie din spectrul XPS sunt caracteristice fiecarei specii atomice, ceea ce permite identificarea elementelor din compozitia suprafetei analizate.
o Compozitie de elemente, analiza cantitativa Intensitatea liniilor spectrale XPS pentru un element x variaza proportional cu concentratia atomica a elementului respectiv. Aceasta permite analiza cantitativa a compozitiei, cu determinarea concentratiilor atomice pentru fiecare element de pe suprafata (circa 20-30 straturi atomice).
o Starea chimica a atomilor Pozitiile liniilor XPS sunt determinate de înconjurarea chimica a atomilor emitatori. Inconjurari diferite determina modificari ale energiilor de legatura (deplasari chimice), specifice starii chimice a atomilor: stari de valenta, grad de oxidare, natura liganzilor chimici etc..
o Profil compozitional cu adâncimea In incinta de analiza XPS se poate realiza o erodare controlata a suprafetei iradiate, prin bombardare cu un fascicul de ioni (Ar). Erodarea suprafetei, cu îndepartarea succesiva a straturilor si analiza XPS dupa fiecare pulverizare, permite astfel stabilirea compozitiei chimice în functie de adâncimea în material. Se obtine un profil compozitional, pâna la adâncimi de ~1 µm, masurate de la suprafata materialului. Informatia respectiva este deosebit de utila în anumite studii, ca acela al variatiei cu adâncimea a gradului de oxidare în materiale supuse coroziunii.

Specificitate (sensibilitate) de suprafata: dintre fotoelectronii generati, doar o mica fractiune poate parasi materialul fara pierderi de energie; cei mai multi îsi pierd energia prin ciocniri inelastice cu ceilalti atomi sau molecule din material. Grosimea stratului din care provin fotoelectronii eliberati din material este de ordinul 5-50 Å. In consecinta, semnalul XPS provine din câteva straturi atomice, situate în imediata vecinatate a suprafetei. Analiza nedistructiva (sau putin distructiva): deteriorarea probelor este slaba în radiatia X; din acest motiv, anumite materiale organice sau molecule adsorbite pe suprafete curate pot fi investigate doar prin tehnica XPS. Aplicatii
- stiinta materialelor si suprafetelor: - microelectronica - nanomateriale - studiul semiconductorilor (straturi subtiri, caracterizari de interfata, identificari de oxizi nativi) - studiul supraconductorilor (stari de valenta, stoichiometrie, structura electronica - metalurgie si tribologie (identificari de elemente, analiza aliajelor, acoperiri protectoare ale suprafetelor, efecte ale lubrifiantilor) - studii de adezivitate (legaturi strat-substrat, modificari chimice la adeziune) - procese de coroziune si oxidare (stari de oxidare ale produselor de coroziune, modificari chimice ale suprafetei si în adâncime) - cataliza heterogena (specii intermediare, stari chimice ale speciilor active, modificari chimice în cursul reactiei)
