The Sacred Mount of Varallowww.sacromontevarallo.eu
The Sacred Mount of Varallo is an artistic religious complex
consisting of 45 chapels and a church, populated with frescoes and
sculptures which tell the story of the life of Christ.
It was realised at the end of the 15th century, at the wish of Father
Bernardino Caimi, a Franciscan friar of the Observant Minors, who
had been custodian of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and who
wanted to reproduce the holy sites of Palestine where the earthly
life of Christ had taken place.
The Sacred Mount is also a beautiful example of park gardens,
organised according to the model of the Italian garden, with organised according to the model of the Italian garden, with
hedges, paths and wooded areas, but also of the ideal town with
its two historical squares.
Already in the early 16th century, thanks to the work of the
painter, sculptor and architect Gaudenzio Ferrari, the scenes inside
the chapels were presented in an innovative merging of painting,
and sculptures with strong realism, so that the devout could feel
strongly involved.
The Sacred Mount of Ortawww.sacromonteorta.it
Placed on the summit of a hill overlooking the Orta Lake, this Sacred Mount fits in perfectly with the
surrounding landscape: enchanting panorama over the lake are elements that make this place
unique, pervaded by a sense of meditation and serenity.
The Sacred Mount of Orta is dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, and each of the twenty chapels
recalls episodes of the life of the saint, interpreted as similar to the life of Jesus.
It is this dedication to a saint, instead of to Christ or to the Madonna that makes it different from the
other Sacred Mounts.
The construction of the chapels follow each other in a spiral itinerary, and went on for over a century,
transforming the route into representations of different architectural styles.
Novara: Cathedral and Basilica of San Gaudenziowww.comune.novara.it
The Cathedral of Santa Maria as it is seen today dates back to
the second half of the 19th century, when it was built in Neo-
classical style, from designs by Alessandro Antonelli. During this
work, parts of the previous Romanesque cathedral were
encompassed into the building, including a large fragment of the
mosaic flooring from the presbytery. The central nave is adorned
by a series of Flemish arrasses (ca. 1565) that narrate episodes
from the Life of Solomon.
The Basilica of San Gaudenzio is the highest point in Novara.
It is dedicated to Gaudentius of Novara, first Christian bishop of It is dedicated to Gaudentius of Novara, first Christian bishop of
the city. It was built between 1577 and 1690 following the
destruction of the old Basilica.
The Basilica itself was built by Pellegrino Tibaldi; however, the
monumental cupola of 122 m. high was designed by Antonelli
(who also built the Mole Antonelliana in Torino).
The Boca Sanctuarywww.santuariodiboca.it
In the middle of a woodland countryside and
vineyard hills rises the Boca Sanctuary.
Its origin comes from an ancient chapel, located
one chilometer far from the little village,
where there was a divine painting attracting a
great number of pelgrins.
After different miracles, like a healing of an
epileptic kid, in 1830 Alessandro Antonelli was epileptic kid, in 1830 Alessandro Antonelli was
commissioned to build up the majestic church in
a neoclassical style.
A lot of efforts followed and in 1917 the
Sanctuary was terminated.
Nowadays the holy place is considered a
religious aim by a lot of pelgrins.
The Oropa Sanctuarywww.santuariodioropa.it
The Oropa Sanctuary is the most important and largest Sanctuary
dedicated to the Virgin Mary to be found in the Alps.
It is located in a unique, natural and unspoilt setting at only 15
minutes driving from the centre of Biella.
It was founded in the 4th century AD by St. Eusebio,
the first bishop of Vercelli.
The complex is made up of three large courtyards.
The first one is followed by the wide square containing the Ancient
Basilica, the spiritual heart of the Sanctuary.Basilica, the spiritual heart of the Sanctuary.
Its Sacellum holds the statue of the Black Madonna.
Beyond the imposing staircase opening above the Piazzale Sacro the
view expands to the Upper Basilica, an edifice of monumental
proportions, offering an interesting contrast with the intimate
spiritual dimension of the ancient Basilica.
The necessity to erect a new church, due the growing number of
pilgrims flowing to the Sanctuary, was felt as early as the 17th
century.
