Simis W

Computer-based interlocking system

Simis W is a high performance,state-of-the-art interlocking technology.It was developed in accordance with theCENELEC standards to achieve thehighest possible levels of safety, and hasgained Network Rail cross acceptance.

Signalling systems based on Simis W caninterface seamlessly with and controlstandard trackside equipment includingmain and shunt signals, indicators, pointmechanisms and level crossings.

Simis W has been proven globally,including implementations in China, theNetherlands, Poland, Romania andSlovenia.

SIMATIC S7

SIMATIC S7-based electronicinterlocking

The use of SIMATIC S7 as an establishedstandardised hardware platform forsignalling interlockings and level crossingcontrol provides operators with thebenefits of low investment andmaintenance costs due to the use ofstandard components used across otherindustry sectors.

The system is simple to operate, andhence requires less training andorientation. It is flexible and simple toexpand, and competent local customersupport, servicing and spare parts areeasily available worldwide.

Vicos

VDU-based control system

The Vicos system will interface directlywith Simis W and can also be configuredfor controlling existing relay interlockingsystems, Siemens S7 (such as EdinburghTram) or SSI systems. Vicos also offersautomatic train-tracking, automatic routesetting and SCADA.

The Vicos system, as well as beinginstalled in Bournemouth andPortsmouth, has been tried and testedaround the world, including projects inGermany, China and Hong Kong.

Case study – Shields to Gourockoverhead line renewal

Siemens was contracted by FirstEngineering, for Network Rail, torenew the overhead line betweenShields Junction (Glasgow) andPaisley, and to refurbish theoverhead line equipment fromPaisley to Gourock & Wemyss Bay.The project also included a new TrackSectioning Cabin (TSC) at ShieldsJunction.

As this was an existing operationalrailway, significant emphasis had tobe put into the detailed planning forthe supply chain – from site surveyto commissioning. The overheadline system was designed from theSiemens portfolio of components,which have been used successfullyworldwide. The switchgear designwas based on proven Siemensstandard equipment.

The Siemens solution provides aprofessional, compliantelectrification system whichincorporates light weight,maintenance-free overhead linesystems and modular substationunits.

RailCom Manager

Siemens has responded to the challengesof communications and control withRailCom Manager, an integrated suitethat enables operators to increaseefficiency, control costs and improvepassengers’ rail travel experience.

RailCom Manager is a proven, scalablesolution that enables operators to investin a limited system initially, and thenexpand it as required. It is the firstsystem of its kind that provides access toall information, communications andasset monitoring systems via a single,integrated user interface.

Compatible with all relevant interfacestandards, RailCom Manager is simple toconfigure and modify, and provides aflexible retrofitting capability enabling itto be easily integrated into existingnetworks and infrastructure.

The system is made of separate modules,enabling operators to select the rightcomponents for their needs. A common,simplified user interface and centralisedmonitoring of all assets mean thatoperational efficiency is maximised andstaff training is kept to a minimum.

Case study – Station managementat King’s Cross St Pancras, LondonUnderground

Siemens provided an integratedstation management system for thegreatly expanded station. The systemcovers the new Western andNorthern ticket halls and includesCCTV, public address, passenger helppoints and station facilitiesmonitoring. As the undergroundstation remained fully operational,the new equipment was installedand tested in isolation, before beingmigrated onto the existing controlarchitecture. The system allowsLondon Underground to provide acentral point of contact forpassengers, and more consistenthelp and information to travellers.

Case study – GSM-R communications
