The Carol H. AxelrodMemorial Blood Drive

As we prepare to hold another year of blood drives in Carol's memory, we know that it will be hard to top 2013, when we expanded the blood drive to a new location and a new season (Lansdale, PA, in mid-summer), and welcomed the donor who helped us achieve one of our biggest milestones to date: collecting the 1,000th unit of blood donated at a Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive held at Lankenau Medical Center! In 2013 alone, our three blood drives collected a total of 389 units, and helped as many as 1,167 recipients receive the transfusions they needed. Many, many thanks to all of the donors, volunteers, and supporters who have made these achievements possible!

A few years ago, we came up with a way to ensure that our blood drives could have an immediate and direct impact in the communities where they are held. We viewed it as another way to spread the word about the importance of blood donation, but also as an opportunity to bring attention to very worthy organizations that can use support as they strive to carry out their own missions.

In conjunction with a blood drive, we issue a "community challenge," whereby our family pledges to make a monetary donation to a designated organization in honor of the drive. The amount of the donation is based on the

number of units of blood that are collected at the blood drive. And if we surpass the previous year's collection total at that blood drive location, we d o u b l e o u r d o n a t i o n t o t h e organization!

Our first community challenges were held in conjunction with our October blood drives, and Lankenau Medical Center was the recipient of those contributions. But in 2013, when we held our second blood drive in Radnor Township, we had the opportunity to assist the Radnor ABC House. This year, in association with our Radnor blood drive in May, we are designating two local organizations, Francisvale Home for Smaller Animals and the Women's Resource Center, as the recipients of the challenge. And looking ahead to our July blood drive in Lansdale, we will work with an organization called Laurel House. More information about these groups isi n c l u d e d o n o u r w e b s i t e ,c h a b l o o d d r i v e . o r g , u n d e r Newsletters. Please take a moment to read about the very important work they do!

Thank you for helping us find new ways to carry on Carol's legacy. We couldn't do the things we do without your support, and we look forward to seeing you at one of our blood drives in 2014!

Sincerely,Michelle and Dan Scolnick

The Story Behind theCarol H. Axelrod

Memorial Blood DriveOur family knows from personal experience that blood donors give hospital patients and their loved ones an incomparable gift: the gift of time. Whether a blood donation is used to save a life, to prolong a life, or to improve the quality of life, it allows families to spend more time together, making special memories. Thanks to the generosity of blood donors, our family was given another year with the mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt we loved.

Carol, a single mother of two daughters, was an elementary school teacher in Philadelphia for over 30 years. In April 2003, she was 55 years old and starting to look ahead to retirement when she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer of the blood and bone marrow. In 2004, Carol's disease progressed to the point where her doctor recommended she undergo two autologous stem-cell transplants, the most aggressive treatment then available to mye loma pat ien ts . A l though the procedures did put her disease into remission, the cancer returned less than a year later, and in an extremely aggressive form.

In July 2007, just two months before her 60th birthday, Carol was hospitalized as the result of a complication of her illness. At that point, the only thing the doctors could do to

try to stabilize the situation was give her multiple blood transfusions and hope that her body would eventually start to do what it needed to do to heal itself.

For a week, Carol received multiple blood transfusions each day. The doctors said that she could die at any time, especially if they were unable to find the blood products she needed. But somehow, those blood products were always there because of all the people who had donated the blood that the doctors were using to try to save her life.

Thanks to blood donors, Carol ultimately was able to leave the hospital. Although her body never regained enough strength to allow her to resume treatment for the cancer, she was able to live independently and enjoy almost all of her usual activities because, for nearly a year, she received blood transfusions at least twice a week. Thanks to blood donors, she was able to celebrate her 60th birthday and see her only grandchild turn three years old. And thanks to blood donors, Carol lived until July 1, 2008, enabling her to make a year's worth of memories with her loved ones.

Our family feels that we owe all the special memories of that last year to the generosity of blood donors. Carol's doctors told us thatthey had never had a patient who was transfusion-dependent for as long as she

was. They were amazed that she lived as long as she did, with her only treatment being transfusions of blood and platelets. We were amazed that the blood products she needed were always available for her and, of course, we were extremely grateful.

After Carol passed away, our family organized a blood drive in her memory at Lankenau Medical Center, the hospital where she had received the transfusions. Held in October 2008, it turned out to be thehospital's most successful blood drive up to that point. We decided to turn the blood drive into an annual event and hold it in multiple locations. With every blood drive we hold, we hope to be able to help even more people who need transfusions. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood and nine out of ten people will require a blood transfusion at some point during their lives.

Human blood cannot be manufactured, and there is no substitute for it. Blood donors were the only people who could give our family an extra year with Carol. Many, many other families find themselves in the same situation every day. Blood is used in emergency rooms and operating rooms, but people with cancer and other chronicillnesses also require blood transfusions, often on a regular basis. Thanks to donors who are willing to take an hour out of their

day to give blood, these patients are able to continue to fight their illnesses and spend more time with their loved ones.

Running or walking with your dog is a great way for both of you to exercise and for your dog to get extra mental stimulation. Because dogs perceive the world around them through their sense of smell, taking your dog for a run will benefit his physical health as well as enrich his mind by opening him up to new and exciting scents. Dogs who arewell-behaved on leash makeexcellent exercise partners andwalks more enjoyable for everyone. Working on leash skills not only makes walking your dog easier for you, but increases his chances of getting to explore more places with you because you'll be more likely to bring him along. Here are some basic tips to help make walking your dog more fun:

The Right Tools!

Before you take the first step out of the door, you need to make sure you have the right tools to walk your dog. Every dog should be walked on a standard four-to-eight foot leash. Avoid retractable leashes in public, as they can cause harm if they fail to lock or break while you are out with your dog. Next, you need to dress your dog appropriately with identifying tags and the right walking harness or collar for your dog. If your dog pulls on or tightens the leash when he's excited, a standard flat collar is not right for you. Constant tightening on your dog's neck can lead to injury and actually teaches your dog to pull harder as he associates the tightness with walking forward. Try to use a no-pull harness that can help you teach your dog to walk on a looser leash. Another great option is a face collar which can control your dog similar to the way a bridle controls a horse; wherever the face goes the body follows. While many people associate face collars with muzzles, they are actually very different and still allow your dog to fully open and close their jaws. Always be sure to fit a harness or face collar correctly and spend some time indoors getting your dog used to the new gear before taking the show on the road.

Teaching Your Dog To Walk With You

Although dogs are social animals, they do not naturally walk in line with each other. Therefore, walking close to you on a leash will take some time and practice. The number one thing to keep in mind when training your dog is that what you reinforce will be repeated, even if you did not reinforce on purpose. Even if you think they are being choked or restricted by their collar and should be learning to avoid that discomfort, you are reinforcing pulling by allowing your dog to move forward. After you make sure you have the right gear and that it fits properly, teach your dog that looking at you or "checking in" is

awesome! Take a few small, tasty treats and hold the leash loosely in one hand. Let your dog know you have treats and reward any calm behavior at the door before you even step outside. Initially you might feel like a pez dispenser feeding your dog for every check in and glance but it'll be worth it when you have a well-behaved walking buddy. Once you are out of the door, try to be aware of every time your dog acts and think if you want the behavior repeated. If the answer is yes, reward your dog. Reinforced behavior is repeated, so if you like it, reward it!

During the acquisition phase of learning, your dog needs a lot of reinforcement to really learn a behavior and make it stick. If your dog makes a mistake or behaves in a way that you do not want to see again, do not reinforce the behavior by doing anything that your dog might enjoy. This includes continuing to walk. Each step you take, you are teaching your dog something. Only move forward or offer a reward for behavior you like. In time you will see that the reinforced behaviors occur much more f r e q u e n t l y . C l e a r a n d c o n s i s t e n t communication is how you will teach your dog to repeat the wanted behavior. Heel walking, or formal obedience walking with your dog right next to you, can be taught once your dog understands loose leash walking. Keep in mind that smelling is half the fun for your pooch. Try not to force them to walk in a heel position for more than 10% of any walk or they will not get the most out of the mental work out.

Beware Of The Three Ds!

With any behavior, we always want to be aware of the three Ds that can sabotage you and your dog: distance, distraction and duration. Whenever you are working on a new skill with your dog, you should try to do so in a low distraction environment where you can work one-on-one with him to set him up for success. Always be sure to know what you want to work on before you ever get your dog in on the game. Over time as your dog shows that he understands your cues or commands, you can begin to methodically and slowly add distance, distractions and duration to help your dog learn to generalize his behavior. Pick a calm area or even your own yard to start teaching your dog to keep a loose leash before going out to a busy trail or store. Keep training sessions short and fun. If you need your dog to get a little more exercise than a short walk allows, try to plan for a game of fetch in a fenced-in area or check out your local dog parks and dog daycare. Take the time to really teach your dog the right way to walk on a leash and you will enjoy years of easy fun walks together. Happy walking!

Library NewsSTOP SUMMER READING LOSS!

Sign up your child for

Summer Reading Club at the Radnor Memorial LibraryJune 16 - August 15, 2014

For children from birth - 6th grade

Participating in the Summer Reading Club can help your child:! Maintain reading skills over the summer months! Love language and books! Enter school ready to learn! Have fun with readingResearch shows that students lose an average of one month of academic learning during the summer break. In order to prevent the "summer slide" and help students become better readers, writers and spellers, daily voluntary reading is essential.

Students who read recreationally over the summer maintain and increase the reading skills they've practiced and developed all year. Reading growth happens when children have freedom to choose what books to read, along with guidance to select books that are not too hard and not too easy.

Summer Reading Club includes prize giveaways and special events for kids of all ages. By attending library summer programs, your child will be exposed to extensive enrichment activities related to literature. Check:radnorlibrarykidzone.wordpress.com for more info.

As a community, we have a shared

responsibility for helping today's incredible generation of youth. They are 20% of our population but 100% of our future. Many young people are struggling on their journey to adulthood. The alarming statistics around teen suicide, substance use or abuse, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and bullying are overwhelming. The issues are not new, but youth are facing them at a younger and younger age, with greater consequences due to 24/7 technology.

Many of these issues are inter-related and stress is a major contributing factor. According to the most recent Stress in America Survey from the American Psychological Association, "Teens say they are feeling stress in all areas of their lives, from school to friends, work and family. And they are not always using healthy methods to cope." Surprisingly, well-resourced teens are among the

most stressed and vulnerable. However, we are learning the hard way that we cannot lecture or "control" young people into positive behavior.

Adults can position themselves to positively influence the youth in their lives. There is compelling evidence that youth can make healthy choices and thrive, even when they are faced with difficult situations, when they have authentic connections with caring adults in their lives; and, when their homes and schools are places where they can communicate openly, honestly and often. It is essential for schools and parents to work together and to prioritize the social and emotional well being of our youth.

SpeakUp! helps facilitate this connection and communication. SpeakUp! is a unique local student led program that provides youth, educators and parents the skills, opportunities and support to speak up and be heard on the critical issues of today (such as suicide, stress, substance abuse, depression and anxiety, body image, sex and healthy relationships). SpeakUp! teaches participants they are not alone in their feelings and experiences, it is ok to ask for help, learn from each other, and know

where to get help. SpeakUp! has a unique approach of training youth leadership teams in over 27 diverse high schools and middle schools in the Philadelphia region. These teams learn in a series of meetings how to facilitate a customized conversation among youth, educators and parents on student-selected topics impacting their lives. This training culminates in a SpeakUp! forum with an opening speaker on their priority issue followed by breakout sessions each with 25-30 youth, educators and parents together talking openly about tough topics (no family members can be in the same breakout). SpeakUp! offers a comprehens ive web-based Resource Guide on our website for t h o s e l o o k i n g f o r m o r e information or help.

SpeakUp! is creating a culture of communication in our schools and families where it is ok to speak up about difficult or taboo issues. Both Radnor High School and Radnor Middle School are involved in SpeakUp!. We are grateful to the Radnor Educational Foundation (REF) for their support in making that possible.

To learn more about SpeakUp!, visit us at www.speakup.org.

Providing a foundation for a lifetime of positive communication!

SpeakUp! provides the tools and creates the opportunity for m e a n i n g f u l d i a l o g u e a n d understanding which then become a catalyst for change.

Your Youth Leadership Committee will select 4-5 topics that focus on the unique issues facing families and communities.

RADNOR HISTORICAL SOCIETYThe Radnor Historical Society is committed to preserve, protect, present, and promote the history of Radnor Township.

The Old Opera House

When the Wayne Opera House suffered a major fire in 1914, it was converted into an office/retail building. This picture was taken shortly after it was re-constructed. Today, Cole Wellness Spa and Art With A Twist operate in this building. Note that E. Lancaster Avenue was just a bumpy dirt road when the picture was taken.

Villanova's Drug Store

This building is located on Lancaster Avenue in Villanova, close to the intersection with N. Spring Mill Road. It was no doubt a popular hangout for Villanova students, probably akin to what Campus Corner is today. The building has recently been an oriental rug gallery. At extreme left is a corner of a classic Atlantic gas station that has since been replaced with a more modern Shell station.

RADNOR HISTORICAL SOCIETYThe Radnor Historical Society is committed to preserve, protect, present, and promote the history of Radnor Township.

Memorial Day, 1922Following the First World War, Radnor residents decided to honor local casualties of the war by erecting a memorial. The Chew family donated a piece of their land at the corner of Lancaster Avenue and Iven Avenue (the corner of today's Micro Center property),

and famed sculptor R. Tait McKenzie created the bas-relief bronze panel depicting soldiers with bayonets. Louis S. Adams was the architect of the memorial's wall. Township residents were asked to subscribe to the project, with a goal of raising $10,000. On Memorial Day, Sunday, May 28, 1922, the memorial was dedicated. U.S. Senator George Wharton Pepper (PA-R) was in attendance. The man saluting in this photograph is said to be General William A. Wiedersheim. Also seen are several children whose fathers' names are on the memorial. In the years since this photograph was taken, the memorial has been moved to the corner of South Wayne and Runnymede Avenues where it was rebuilt exactly, and panels have been added to commemorate veterans of more recent wars. The memorial remains the centerpiece of Radnor's Memorial Day activities.

CLEAN YOUR ORIENTAL RUG THE WAY IT WAS MADEWhere Oriental rugs are made, they are cleaned only one way - with a centuries-old process known as Makoor, the gentle art of meticulous hand cleaning.

In Philadelphia, only Maloumian's cleaning and restoration experts will clean yourfine Oriental with Makoor. So you'll never have to worry about damaging yourbeautiful carpet with harsh shampoos or chemicals and brutal machines.

Senior LifestylesMinimize Your Risk of Falling

When you're young, often the biggest injury you receive from a fall is red-faced embarrassment. As we get older, physical changes, health conditions and medications make falls more likely, and they can have a much bigger impact on your life than just being embarrassed. Each year, one in three adults over the age of 65 falls. The risk of falls increases with age. At age 80, over half of seniors fall each year. Once you've fallen, you are 2 to 3 times more likely to fall again. Many of these falls result in injury: 87% of all fractures are due to falls. Fortunately, falls are a problem that is largely preventable.

What is your personal risk?

Certain factors increase your risk of falling. These common medical issues can increase your chance of a fall:

Your strength and balance also play a big role in reducing your risk of a fall. Staying active means fewer falls. Even a modest amount of exercise can improve your energy level, help you maintain your balance and strengthen your muscles and cardiovascular system. Surrey offers fitness classes designed specifically for older adults, including the Matter of Balance classes.

Is your home as safe as it should be? Most falls happen at home. As we get older, things that never used to be an issue start to pose a greater risk: stairs, bathrooms, dimly lit rooms, extension cords, throw rugs, even pets underfoot. The good news is that most of these potential hazards can be minimized with some time and attention.

Let Surrey help. Surrey's handymen can install grab bars, add stair railings, enhance lighting in hard-to-reach areas and make other improvements to your home as part of your fall prevention strategy.

Surrey's home care program includes a home safety assessment and recommendations. Rely on Surrey to help you keep active and minimize that risk. For more information or to schedule a free home assessment with a Surrey aging-in-place specialist, call 610-647-9840.

Permits & Pool Safety Questions

As the weather starts to warm up and all the snow and ice disappears, there is a tendency to want to make our outdoor living areas more livable. Often times, we are in a rush to soak up that first bit of nice weather and stretch our legs from a long cold winter. The Environment & You

Reflect, learn and participate are the themes of the Radnor Conservancy's educational events for spring 2014. If you're a garden lover and care about the environment, you won't want to miss this opportunity to learn how your friends are resolving water problems, building beautiful gardens and creating healthy environments.

To reflect is the first item on the Conservancy ' s educa t iona l agenda. Radnor Conservancy and the Wayne Art Center are pleased to announce Radnor Reflections, an exhibit of photography chronicling the natural, historic and cultural assets of Radnor Township through the seasons. Photographs of exhibitors will appear May 10 through June 28, with an opening reception and awards presentation on Sunday, May 18 at the Art Center. Photographers of all ages wishing to submit entries, please check the Conservancy's website for further information.

Do you have storm water issues on your property - or just want to add

We are thrilled for the arrival of spring and the opportunity to open our gates to guests once again. Garden hours are Wednesday through Sunday 10:00 am 5:00 pm, from April 2nd November 2nd, 2014. From May to Labor Day the garden remains open until 8:00 pm on Friday evenings. The garden will open at 8:00 am on the first Saturday of each month beginning May 3rd and ending October 4th. This special 45-minute tour highlights life on the Main Line in the 20th century and gives an introduction to the garden. Register at the reception desk or call ahead, 610-687-4163.

Once again, Chanticleer will partner with the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society to bring new and interesting classes to the garden. Join Chanticleer horticulturists for one or many of the garden-based topics being offered this year. Classes such as spring vegetable gardening, starting plants from seed, and an introduction to garden photography provide a unique way of learning from Chanticleer's talented staff while experiencing the garden at its most exclusive time

when we're closed to the public! Pre-registration is required; for more information visit Pennsylvania Horticulture Society's website: h t t p : / / p h s o n l i n e . o r g /events/workshops-classes/.

Two photography workshops are scheduled at Chanticleer: Allen Rokach wi l l hold a Digi ta l Photography Workshop on July 26 and 27; and Rob Cardillo will hold a Master Photography Workshop on October 17-19. Both workshops are limited to 18 participants. For further information and to register, please contact Anne Sims at (610) 687-4163 ext. 118.
