A wilderness escape for all ages and abilities, Sparks Canyon Retreat + Lodge is located in Pismo Beach,

California. The design has a strong connection to the existing natural environment and is focused on cre-

atively integrating the user experience into the natural features of the site.

Retreat program elements include a main lodge, cab-ins, gathering areas, amphitheater, pool, fire ring, nature

trails and vineyard. Low impact development features are utilized to capture and collect stormwater.

In an entry for a ASCA design competition, our design team was challenged to rethink castle pinckney, a nineteenth century fort situated on shutes folly island

within the charleston, south carolina harbor.

We proposed a design solution that focused on future climactic activity on the island. The mission of our design team was to establish a research and educa-

tional facility that would communicate and educate the public on matters relating to environmental phenomena and the consequences of leaving these events

unaddressed. The research facility would focus on coastal conservation and rejuvenation, ecological succession, and climate change, and the island design

would accomodate solar and wind farms, vortex and tidal energy, rainwater har-vesting and green architecture.

triangle park observational studysan luis obispo, california

as a regular visitor and observer of trian-gle park, I am very aware that the park is relatively unknown to most citizens of san luis obispo. if triangular lounge blocks are implemented, people will gain recogni-tion, as the park will have gained a unique feature that promotes meditaition and relaxation.

to take the fundamental psychogenic need to play. by releasing tension in a park, a lounge block will bring the bodyto a higher level of relaxation, where the body is in harmony with the mind. this is through a connection with nature through the grass, trees, leaves and sky.

currently, people that come to the park often bring their own seating elements: blankets, folding chairs etc, through innateconstruction. by providing a comfortable,in-ground lounge chairs, people will take more time to relax, enabling play. this will create a loyalty to the park leading to a future visit.

An obeservational study in the style of william white, conducted over a month long period that focused on factors associated with environmental

psychology, site analysis, and user behavior to inform design decisions.

Implementation solutions were based on tree canopy cover in the park, and how users can maximize interaction with the views from underneath

the trees.

conceptual site plan the roots of cannery rowmonterey, california

The design of 500 Cannery Row emphasizes restoration of an abandoned coast-al space, implementing a beach, a native park, and a vegetated parking lot, all in connection with the Monterey Coastal Trail. The site design begins at the exist-

ingpedestrian trail and flows towards the bay in a series of curving walkways that wind through native vegetation and meadows and ends at a revitalized white sand beach. This root system of pathways is a vital connection for residents and visitors

to have access to both land and sea recreational oppourtunities.

california native meadows (grasses and wildflowers) and fields (native grasses) will be implemented to serve the recreational needs of residents and visitors looking to find peaceful place with a view of the bay. the fields will require minimum maintenance and once established, minimal irrigation.

dune restoration - to provide a functional barrier between park space and the beach, a compre-hensive dune restoration will take place, thus resulting in strong protection againststorms and habitat revitalization for plants and animals.

mission statementThe guiding influence behind this project is a coastline revitalization of 500 Cannery Row.

The purpose of this project is to introduce a designthat effectively integrates all aspects of waterfront

recreation on Monterey Bay (fishing, diving, swimming and kayaking), provides a strong

connection to beachfront access, addresses the entire undeveloped site in relation to Cannery Row,

and educates visitors and residents about ecological features.
