    History of Queenstown, New Zealand

    William Gilbert Rees was Queenstown's rst European settler and the community's founding father. In 1860, he

    established the rst farm in Queenstown and played a key role in the gold rush that followed soon after. Before

    European settlement, Queenstown frequently saw visiting Maori on their quest for greenstone. In 1862, two

    sheep farmers Thomas Arthur and Harry Redfern discovered gold along the banks of the Shotover River. Within a

    year Queenstown became a booming mining town after the discovery of the second largest haul of gold in

    history. The local gold diggers declared it t for a queen as a nod to Queen Victoria of England, hence Queen-

    stown was born.

    Today, Queenstown is one of New Zealands top visitor destinations for extreme sporting adventures, food, wine

    and breath-taking scenery.
