Impetus for Change

• Driven by health care reform and the advent of the private sector in the late 1980s, and by commitments made to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Vietnam is faced with a need to increase the regulation and training of its health care professionals. Previously, a diploma from an accredited health professional school was sufficient to practice for a lifetime. Legislation has recently been passed that will institute a licensing system, will require continuing medical education (CME) to maintain the license, and will probably place a large burden on the health professional schools and training institutes to provide CME. Supported by international nongovernmental organizations and foreign universities, the 12 medical universities in Vietnam are responding and are preparing for their new and expanded role.

• Government highlights that standards for nursing education do not meet international requirements

• Move toward person centred, holistic care that focussed on nursing knowledge

• Change in teaching methods to develop evidence based decision making and critical thinking

Transformational Leadership

• Taking the lead and helping followers (nurse lecturers and nurses) to understand the model of competency based education through workshops(n=300), publications, critical challenges, communication (skype and video conferencing), distance education (n=180)

• Establish agreed to goals for development and agreement on how to work toward those goals (these reflect MOH and MOET requirements)

Servant Leadership Model

• The expert now understands the followers and the context within which they practice. She can see clearly now!

• She has taken a back seat but is available when needed

• The nurse teachers and nurses who have participated in this project are ‘doing it for themselves!’

• It is better to lead from behind and put others first, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership. (Nelson Mandela)

Finally

• A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves. (Lao Tzu)
