QUEEN’S GAELS - MEN’S VOLLEYBALL MEDIA NOTES - 2011-123

Season RecapThe Gaels entered the 2011-12 season as one of the favourites to be at the top of the table in the OUA with a team loaded with high end, veteran talent. A slow start hampered their season, as several injuries to key players set the team back early on. Despite starting the season 1-3, the Gaels came together down the stretch in dominant fashion and finished the season 12-6.

After kicking off the season with a win over the RMC Paladins, the Gaels struggled on a tough road trip west of Toronto as they dropped three games to Western, Windsor and Guelph respectively. The Gaels rebounded strong, winning their next four of five, including two straight sets wins over Ryerson and York respectively at home. Coming out of the winter holiday, the Gaels had trouble shaking off the rust, dropping two of their first three games in five set thrillers. They were strong from there on out, as a five set win over York - on the road this time - started a six game win streak and five straight games of straight sets victories which included wins over Western and Windsor to close out their season and seal third place in the province. The Gaels began their playoff campaign with a hard fought five set game against the Guelph Gryphons at home. After falling behind two sets to none to the Gryphons, the Gaels rallied and battled back with dominant performances in the final three sets - defeating the Gryphons by margins of six, 12 and seven points to advance to the Final Four. In the OUA Semi-final, the Gaels took on the McMaster Marauders and were strong for most of the game, defeating the Marauders in four sets with a team hitting percentage of .282. The Gaels took on their rivals, the Western Mustangs in the OUA Final and got strong performances all around as three Gaels registered double digit kills en route to a come from behind five set win. The Gaels are led on the attack by fifth year hitter Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., a three time All-Canadian, two time Gaels MVP and 2011-12 OUA MVP. Zeeman has averaged at least 3.8 points per set in his career since his rookie season in 2007-08. Joining Zeeman is Gaels middle Michael Amoroso of Toronto, a two time OUA First Team All-Star. Amoroso is one of the most effective middles in the province as he ranks among the leaders in both blocks and kills, recording a 55% kill efficiency over the past four seasons. Also leading the Gaels is Niko Rukavina of Mississauga, Ont., who has established himself as one of the most versatile and effective players in the country. Rukavina played the majority of the regular season as the Gaels libero and captured the OUA Libero of the Year honours. He has since switched back to his normal position as an outside hitter.

Coordinating the Gaels attack is setter Jackson Dakin of Courtenay, B.C. He averages 9.69 assists per set for the Gaels which ranks among the top ten in the nation.

Head CoachBrenda WillisThe five-time OUA Coach of the Year and OUA 3M Coaching Award winner enters her 25th campaign with the Gaels in 2011-12 and her 38th year of coaching. Her career coaching record at Queen’s includes 381 wins against 200 loses, including 340 and 158 in OUA league competition.

In the summer of 2009, Willis served as Head Coach of the National Maccabia Men’s Volleyball Team, earning bronze medal for Canada, the first men’s volleyball medal Canada has ever won in these games. In 1993, she led Team Ontario to a gold medal finish at the Canada Games.

Willis just completed a 10 year stint as President of the Ontario Volleyball Association, and remains an active Learning Facilitator for Levels One through Three. In 2007, she was the honoured recipient of the Rolf Lund Jule Nisse Award, presented by the Ontario Sport Alliance and the Ministry of Health Promotion to an individual who has demonstrated a life-time commitment to Playground to Podium Sport.

In addition to her coaching duties, Willis also teaches in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies and is the mother of two grown children. Career Record

QUEEN’S GAELS - MEN’S VOLLEYBALL MEDIA NOTES - 2011-1212

BRIEF RECAPRoyal Military College of Canada Paladins (vs. RMC Oct. 28, @ RMC Jan. 20) The Gaels dominated the Paladins in their two meetings as they swept both matchups in straight sets. The Gaels took both games in straight sets against RMC on the strength of performances from depth players. In game one, Phillipe Goyer of Ottawa led the team with nine kills on 16 attacks. Mike Tomlinson of St. Pauls, Ont., led the way in game two with nine kills of his own. Windsor Lancers (@ Windsor Nov. 4, vs. Windsor Feb. 5) The Gaels split the season series with the Lancers as they dropped a four set game during the second week of the season, and won a straight set game in the season finale. Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., put up 22 points for the Gaels in the first leg, but it wasn’t enough to lead an injury riddled Gaels squad over Windsor. Zeeman had 12 kills in the second game as the Gaels swept the Lancers to clinch third place in the OUA. Western Mustangs (@ Western Nov. 5, vs. Western Feb. 4) The Gaels split the season series with the Mustangs as they traded straight set victories at home with one another. Zeeman led the Gaels in kills with 12 in game one, but the Gaels couldn’t solve their rivals and fell by a 3-0 margin. In the second leg, the Gaels upset the No. 5 Mustangs in a dominant straight set victory with Zeeman leading the way as he recorded 17 kills and 20.5 points.

Guelph Gryphons (@ Guelph Nov. 11, vs. Guelph Jan. 7) The Gryphons swept a hard fought season series with the Gaels, taking the first match in straight sets and the second in five sets. The Gryphons held Zeeman in check in the first matchup, limiting him to eight kills en route to a three set victory. In the second game, the Gaels had a 2-1 set lead slip away from them as they dropped a five set game to Guelph despite a 17 kill performance from Will Sidgwick of Toronto.

Waterloo Warriors (@ Waterloo Nov. 12, vs. Waterloo Jan. 8) The Gaels swept the season series with the Warriors as they took the first matchup in straight sets before beating them in five sets at home. In game one, Zeeman led the way for the Gaels with a 20 point performance as the Gaels only needed three sets to beat the Warriors. In game two, Zeeman found a way to top his performance from the first leg with 24 kills as the Gaels earned a five set win to sweep the series.

Toronto Varsity Blues (vs. Toronto Nov. 18, @ Toronto Jan. 29) The Gaels swept the season series with the Varsity Blues as they took the first leg at home in four sets before they beat them in straight sets in Toronto. Zeeman led the way with a game high 15 points in the victory. He matched his performance in the second leg as he posted another game high, this time 14 points, to lead the Gaels to a straight sets victory.

McMaster Marauders (vs. McMaster Nov. 19, @ McMaster Jan. 14)The Gaels dropped both of their games against the Marauders in two closely contested five set affairs. In the first leg in Kingston, Zeeman had 21 kills for the Gaels but they couldn’t hold on to a two set lead and lost in five sets. In Hamilton, the Gaels had three players record double digit kills with Zeeman’s 15 leading the way but they couldn’t seal the deal as McMaster battled back from a 2-1 deficit to earn the victory.

Ryerson Rams (vs. Ryerson Dec. 2, @ Ryerson Jan. 28) The Gaels handled the Rams in their two meetings, beating Ryerson in straight sets twice to sweep the season series. Michael Amoroso of Toronto led the Gaels attack in the first meeting with 11 kills on 16 attacks to lead all players. Zeeman led the way for the Gaels in the second game of the series with 12 kills on just 24 attacks as the Gaels took game two on the road.

York Lions (vs. York Dec. 3, @ York Jan. 15)The Gaels swept the Lions in their two games this season as they beat York in straight sets at home in the ARC before topping York in five sets on the road in the second meeting. In the first game of the season series, Zeeman paced the Gaels past York with a 16 kill performance on just 27 attacks. In the second game, the Gaels were forced to come back from a 2-1 deficit but ultimately pulled it off as Zeeman’s 14 kills pushed the Gaels past the Lions in five sets.

In the final set, Queen’s led the entire way with leads of 5-1, 9-4 and 13-10. From there on the veteran Gaels squad

stayed poised and controlled as they secured the OUA title with a 15-12 finish. Will Sidgwick of Toronto capped the game off with back-to-back kills.

The Gaels will now move on to the 2012 CIS men’s volleyball championships which they will host on March 2-4 in Kingston, Ontario. The Gaels will welcome Western, Dalhousie, Laval, Manitoba, Alberta, Calgary and Trinity Western.
