  • "Tattoo the above quotes on your brain" asErnest used to say. Better yet, paint them assigns to hang in your shop where you can lookat them every time the going gets rough.

    It was with this incentive that the manu-al you're holding was done. With its nearly150 different parts not even a simple quadri-cycle is necessarily easy. However, ifapproached one part at a time, the jobbecomes much easier.

    Usually when you buy a set of plans for aproject such as this all you get is a copy of amagazine article or everything crowded ontoa few sheets of paper.

    In this manual you will find a completedrawing of each part - nothing is left for youto guess about. A lot of parts are simply apiece of bar stock, angle or tubing cut tolength with one or more holes drilled in it.

    This is not to imply that you can't go offthe beaten trail and modify or redesign toyour own desires. To do so is encouraged.

    The idea that this horseless carriage couldbe approached as a class project crossed ourmind. Since it utilizes several machine shopoperations, each student could be assigned afew parts to do according to their ability andskills. When completed, let the auto body

    shop do the painting (I hate painting). Thendrive in the homecoming parade! TheIndustrial Arts Dept wins, hands down!

    The same could apply to friends or neigh-bors who go join together to build each a carwith different ones making all of certainparts.

    A few tools I consider a necessity (eitherowning or having access to) and they are: acut-off saw, a drill press, a hand grinder, anaccurate square (combination & large carpen-ter's square), a bottle of layout blue and themeans of accurately scribing layout lines onthe stock. Always center punch all holesbefore drilling.

    We could not avoid the use of a lathe in aminimum of places. These parts could be"farmed out" to a machine shop. However,this is going to cost you. Better yet if you arein a school shop class. Maybe you have anacquaintance who owns a lathe - be nice tohim!

    To proceed very far in a project wheremetal is used, a welder is a necessity. I useda 225 amp AC (buzz box) and an assortmentof 3/32, 1/8 and 5/32 Dia. No 6013 rods.

    I'm not going into how to run a lathe, weldor any other shop skills. To do so would be

  • beyond the scope of this plans manual. Tolearn or do these skills is up to you.

    Before you start making scrap iron, studythis manual and drawings. Obtain catalogsfrom suppliers and if you have access to theinternet, look at and bookmark the supplierswe have referenced.

    Plan where you are going to work on yourcar. Although desirable, a large shop isn'tnecessary. Henry Ford utilized a coal shed fora car similar to what you're undertaking.

    Visit your local steel supplier. Dependingon your location, you may have access to awell stocked supplier. If you live in a ruralarea, look for a welding shop that might havesome scrap or be willing to order for you.Also, consider letting a good welding shop doyour welding, especially if they are equippedwith a MIG welder. Maybe he would like tobuild one for himself!

    Search the internet, especially Ebay auc-tion. We found the transaxles used on thehorseless carriage plus future projects, onEbay. When you need a little R & R from theshop, sit down and rest at your computer. Usethis time to further your knowledge of what'savailable out there.

    Start with the Frame

    It is only a suggestion that you start withthe frame. The frame is not unlike the foun-dation when building a house. Since all theother components rely on the frame for align-ment, great care must be exercised when lay-ing out each individual piece of the frame.

    The frame is a hurdle that cleared willcommit you to finishing your car. The onlymachining process is to accurately cut eachpiece to length; drill necessary holes on a drillpress and either weld them together yourselfor have it done by a welding shop.

    If space permits, set the frame on a coupleof saw horses. Every time you enter yourshop you will see it and it will trigger yourmind to the idea that, "By golly I'm reallybuilding a car - from scratch - by myself". "Iwonder when the next parade in town is." I,also, recommend that you do not paint theframe until all the other parts have beenmade. As you progress making the partssome of them can be loosely assembled to theframe. Seeing you car take shape is a thrillyou'll never forget.

    We chose to detail each piece of the frameindividually for both clarity and to be able todo all the drilling on the drill press. It isimperative that all the holes be drilled per-pendicular and unless you have better abilitythan I, it can not be successfully accom-plished with a hand held drill.

    Another important requirement for theframe is for it to be welded flat and square.This can only be accomplished by close atten-tion to your cut-off saw being adjustedabsolutely square. You must adhere to theoverall dimensions. There are no tolerancesspecified - only the actual dimension shown.However, your finished part should be withinplus or minus 1/64 of an inch.

    With the exception of 2 small brackets,the frame is constructed from 1 1/2" X 1 1/2"square steel tubing with a wall thickness of.120 inch. All cuts are square and if properlycut, all parts should clamp up, forming asquare frame. Needless to say, the clampingshould be done on a flat surface.

    Study drawing No. 062, noting the holelocations. It is very important that closeattention be given the orientation of eachframe piece before welding begins. It can bevery discouraging to have to scrap out a weld-ed frame simply because you failed to doublecheck part placement. However, should youhave to re-do any parts, frame and otherwise,here's another Ford quote to remember:

    We builders of small cars and tractors arelucky in the fact that as a result of the abun-dance of riding lawn tractors, there seems tobe quite a number of transmissions, new andused, available. I found and bought severalthrough Ebay auction on the internet.

    They are typically either manual shifting,4 or 5 speed transaxles or of the hydro-staticvariety. The transaxle used in the prototypehorseless carriage in this manual is of thelater. Ours was a new "in the crate" Hydro-Gear (manufacturer) No. 0500. The cost was$175.00 - quite reasonable considering SearsRoebuck got over $600 for a replacementwhen they were available.

    All these transaxles have a 3/4" X 30"wide axle. Since this was too narrow for thetread width we wanted, it was decided tomake extensions to attach directly to theaxles and then mount the rear wheels direct-ly to the extension.

    The criteria we established called for amaximum speed of 20 mph - hopefully a bitslower. Most lawn tractor transaxles aredesigned to be attached to either an 18" or20" OD rear wheel, providing a top speed ofnot over 10 mph. By attaching a 26" bicycletype wheel directly we managed to achieve atop speed of less than 15 mph - quite satisfac-tory for our application.

    Another reason we chose to use a hydro-static transaxle was no clutch mechanismwas needed. It drives directly off the engine.Driving the car for the first time, some peopleare quick to note "There's nothing to do withmy feet." "Where's the brake!" The hydrostat -ic transmission has a small brake that we uti-lized for a parking brake. The "road brake" issomething the transmission supplies for free!Yes, you have dynamic braking - move themotion control lever back to neutral too

    quickly and you'll experience the braking. Ona loose surface the rear wheels will some-times drag.

    One simple motion control lever is allthat's needed to go from neutral to fast - backto neutral and then into reverse. Since hydro-statics will run in reverse as fast as forward,a limit was built into the guide to limitreverse speed.

    Since the entire design was predicatedaround a Hydro-Gear Model 0500 transaxle,if another transaxle is chosen then you muststudy the frame and control mechanism, not-ing if there's any impact on the design anddimensions we have.

    Our transaxle came without a driven pul-ley and cooling fan. Yes, hydrostatics produceheat and fans are used to force air over theunit.

    Also, if buying a new hydrostatic unit, itmay be shipped with a plug installed to pre-vent oil loss during shipment. In usage thisplug must be replaced with a vent to allowthe transaxle to "breath."

    Since our unit had been originallydesigned for use by Sears Roebuck, we foundthe pulley, fan, and vent parts available fromSear's parts department. We have providedpart numbers in the back of this manual.

    One more feature unique to hydrostatictransaxles is the by-pass feature. To pushmachinery with engine shut off it is neces-sary to dis-engage the hydraulics. This isaccomplished by a small lever on the top thatmust be linked somehow to allow the lever tobe held in the by-pass position. Later you willsee how we did this in a straight forwardmanner.

    Purging the Transmission

    During manufacture, storage and ship-

  • ment of hydrostatics, air can become trappedbe in the internal hydraulic passages. Whenyour carriage is complete, purging is done bythe following procedure:

    1. On a level surface, apply the parkingbrake, activate the hydro by-pass feature andstart the engine. With engine running slow,move the motion control lever fully forwardand hold for 5 seconds. Move lever to fullreverse position for 5 seconds. Repeat thisprocedure 3 times.

    Note: During this procedure there will be nomovement of drive wheels. The air is beingremoved from hydraulic drive system.

    2. Move control lever to neutral position andshut off engine. De-activate the hydro by-pass feature. Re-start engine, de-activateparking brake. Sitting on carriage, slowlymove the motion control lever forward untilthe carriage moves forward about 5 feet.Return the lever to neutral and repeat thisprocedure 3 times.

    You carriage transmission is now purgedand ready for use.

    In cooler weather (50 degrees F. andbelow) allow both engine and transmission towarm up a bit before using.

    You will note that there's no drain plug onthe bottom of the transmission. They comefilled from the factory and because of theirsealed design, will never require drainingand refilling. Should you wish to check the oillevel you can do so by removing the vent fit-ting and measure the level with a make shift"dip-stick."

    Hydro-Gear recommends an oil level ofbetween 1.6 and 2.1 inches with the unitlevel. It comes pre-filled with Mobil HD20W50 motor oil.

  • Most people will never undertake the taskof designing and building anything, let alonean actual automobile that they can ride onwhen finished. They may venture into modelbuilding and invest upwards of a thousanddollars into a radio controlled airplane or car.

    Some of these models are complex andhighly technical. However, hobby shopsabound in materials, kits and other suppliesthat remove the fears of undertaking modelbuilding. You may have friends who have pre-ceded you in these areas. However, buildingan actual car is a field traveled by few.Intimidation sets in and you simply dontknow where to start. Most people will seldomproceed further than the dreaming stage

    Spend a lot of time thinking thinkingabout how such men as Henry Ford, RansomOlds and others proceeded when they under-took to build their first cars which launchedgiant industries. Where did they start?

    Lets start with something simple. Say, forexample, you wife wants you to build a shelffor her to place some books. You would ana-lyze the projects like this:

    1. Is the shelf free standing or does it extendup from the floor as a book case or hang fromthe ceiling?

    2. What materials and finish will you use.

    3. Where will you obtain these materials.

    4. Will you buy existing parts or will youobtain the raw materials and custom buildfrom scratch?

    5. How much can you spend on the project?

    6. What tools do you have and what will youneed to get to properly finish the job?

    Most people will seldom have all thematerials at hand and if they dont want tobuy more tools, they will work around whatthey already have. It would then be logical tolook around your nearest home center to Seewhat's available and compare prices.

    The point Im trying to make is even witha simple shelf project you will spend a lot oftime thinking, investigating and planningbefore you pick up a tool or board. The sameapplies to small car design and building. Theonly major difference is you dont have a carcenter or hobby shop for car builders whereyou can look at whats available.

    Theres a lot of useful things available butit takes a little detective work and digging tofind them. Search Ebay Auction on the inter-net for all applicable categories and items.Flea markets and carport sales can some-times be a source of something we can use.

    Look in an ad paper that most communi-ties have. Its possible for someone to give youan old riding mower just for hauling it off.

    Above all be resourceful.

    The Design Processes to Followin Small Car Design

  • Once you have completed the frame andall the parts and are sure they fit and func-tion to your satisfaction, you should paintthem to a color or colors of your choice. Withthe exception of the wooden body parts whichwere painted red, our car was painted black.

    Front Axle & Steering Mechanism

    Lay your frame, right side up, on a pair ofsaw horses. We began by assembling thefront axle and steer mechanism first. This iscovered on Assembly Drawing No. 073. Whilethe steering shaft No. 055 and related partscan be assembled at this time, the columnNo. 050 and parts above it will have to go onafter the front body has been attached.

    Everything is pretty much straight for-ward with the exception of the front axle. It isattached to its support brackets, No. 001 byits two threaded studs. We have shown ablown apart view of the springs, washers andnut. We use a dual compression springarrangement with one telescoping the other.Use both fender washers and rubber washersin the approximate arrangement shown. The5/8 Nylon lock nut is adjusted to your satis-faction. The Axle is, also, attached by twotrailing arms, No. 056 which are called out onAssembly Drawing No. 077. We recommendadjusting these arms to achieve approximate-ly a 2 degree positive caster on the axle. Thetie rods utilize 3/8 ID shim washers, No. PP222 to allow better movement of the ballends. The tie rods attach to the bottom of thepitman arm and to the top of the spindle arm.

    Transaxle Mounting

    With the transaxle supported, attach boththe rear hubs and associated parts to theaxles. Refer to Assembly Drawing No. 070.Use shim washers No. PP 241 to adjust thespace between the pillow block bearing No.

    PP 214 and the hub to allow both the rightand left pillow blocks to center on the framesides. Try to use the same number of shimwashers on each side. Our car required 5 oneach side.

    With your rear hubs assembled onto thetransaxle, this is a good time to go ahead andmount the transaxle to the frame. Leave the3/8 mounting hardware loose for final adjust-ment. Before the torque bracket is mountedthe transaxle will swing down. As long as thevent plug is capped, no harm can happen.

    While referring to Assembly Drawing No.076, use a combination square set to 6 5/8inch position the rear axle on each side to thisdimension from the back edge of the frame.Thus done, the center line of the axle will be7 inches from the rear of the frame andsquare to it. When this is accomplished, youshould tighten down the 3/8 mounting boltsholding the pillow blocks to the frame andshown in Assembly Drawing No. 070.

    Referring to Assembly Drawing No. 077,attach the torque bracket No. 005 to theframe with 5/16 hardware. Swing thetransaxle upward and with the all-threadbolt No. 061b and 5/16 hardware, attach it asclose to level as you can see. Temporarilysnug down the driven pulley and use a 2 ft.carpenter's square or suitable straight edgelaid across the top of the pulley to acquireequal vertical distances to the frame crossmembers at the front and back of thetransaxle. Tighten the torque bracket hard-ware to secure the transaxle in its correctposition.

    At this time, by referring to AssemblyDrawing No. 076, you can loosely assemblethe transaxle support angles, No. 022L and022R to the frame. Now, using 5/16 hard-ware, loosely attach the transmission support

  • brackets (2) No. 023 to the support angles.Use No. 061b (4) and 5/16 hardware to attachthe brackets to the transaxle.

    The load on the transaxle is carried by theball bearing pillow block already attached.Therefore, the brackets just attached shouldbe secured to the transaxle so as to not add orsubtract to the up/down load on the pillowblocks.

    Another thing to double check at this timeis the 15 1/2 inch dimension between theangles No. 022L and 022R. Since the rearbody cover attaches to these angles, it isimperative that this dimension be held.

    Engine Support and Mount

    Again, referring to Assembly Drawing077, start attaching all the engine mountpieces to the frame. You will note that thesub-assembly No. 032 does not locate theengine mounting holes. Since any number ofdifferent engines can be used on this car, wehave left it up to the builder to locate anddrill these holes to match his particularengine. While the literature supplied withsome new engines will have the dimensionsof the mounting holes, this isn't always thecase. The way we located the holes for theHonda 5.5 hp engine we used was to take apiece of cover stock card (about .010 thick)and cut a hole the size of the crankshaft inthe center of it. Placing this over the crank-shaft and marking the direction of the cylin-der, we took an Xacto knife and cut holesmatching the mounting holes.

    Removing the card and turning it upsidedown, I centered it on the engine mount plat -form sub-assembly and center punched eachmounting hole. The engine aligned perfectly.

    The throttle bracket is attached to theleft-rear of the engine mount No. 032. Thisbracket was designed to accommodate theHonda engine we used. Depending on the

    engine you choose, you may have to devise adifferent means of attaching the throttlecable.

    Control Shaft Assembly

    Moving forward on the frame we come tothe shaft assembly that contains both themotion control and the parking brake. Theshaft itself is No. PP 204, unaltered, support-ed by two bronze pillow blocks, No. PP 213which are, in turn, mounted to the frame viamounts No. 012 attached to the frame with1/4 inch hardware.

    With the shaft protruding flush with thepillow block on the left, lightly secure the col-lar, No. PP 239. Position the pitman arm, No.049 with the motion control rod assembly No.059 is lined up with the control arm on thetransaxle. Lightly tighten the set screw tohold it in place.

    The parking brake lever assembly ismoved to the left, contacting the pitman arm.There will remain a space between it and theright hand pillow block which is filled up withshim washers, No. PP 245. Use only enoughto take up the major slack - the parking brakemust be able to move without moving themotion control mechanism.

    The pitman arm of the motion controlshould be pointed about straight down whenthe transaxle arm is in neutral. With propermovement assured, tighten down the pitmanarm set screw so as to clearly mark its posi-tion on the shaft.

    Now, leaving the pillow blocks securelymounted remove the shaft and spot drill alarge dimple, centered on the above mademark. It should only be deep enough to allowthe set screw to mount the pitman armsecurely enough to insure against its move-ment on the shaft.

    Re-assemble in the order removed.

  • Remove the set screw from the pitman armand coat it and its threaded hole with perma-nent Loc-Tite (red), re-install and securelytighten into the previously drilled dimple.

    Position the left collar No. PP 239 to allowfree movement of entire shaft mechanisms.Remove set screw and coat it and its thread-ed hole with Loc-Tite (blue), re-install andsecurely tighten.

    The protruding end of the shaft has aspline which will later be used to mount theoperator's control arm.

    Engine Mounting

    This is a good time to go ahead and mountthe engine, belt, pulleys etc. After mountingthe engine you can install the pulley and hub,Nos. PP 235 and PP 236. Tighten just enoughto hold in place. Mount the driven pulley, fan,bellville washer and jam nut on transaxle. Goahead and tighten this down.

    Install "V" belt No. PP 246 and align thedriving pulley so the belt is running parallelto the frame. Tighten down the pulley/hub onthe engine.

    The belt is tightened by means of athreaded rod on the engine mount No. 032.This rod goes through bracket No. 016 and issecured with double 5/16 nuts. Do no overtighten the belt. Ours has about 3/4 play andnever slips.

    This would be a good time to install thehydro by-pass mechanism. A hydrostatictransmission will not freewheel unless theinternal hydraulic line is opened. The 0500transaxle has a small, spring loaded, externallever to accomplish this. This lever must bepushed or pulled, overcoming its spring andheld in this position in order to move the carwith the engine off.

    Assembly Drawing No. 072 shows the

    parts involved. Two brackets, No. 006 and007 are mounted to the frame with 1/4 inchhardware. The balance of assemble is self-explanatory. The various nuts are adjusted toallow the spring to return to neutral. TheNylon lock nut is adjusted so it will be pulledout past bracket No. 006 allowing the thread-ed rod to drop down into the slot, locking theby-pass on. A red knob adds the final touch.

    Adding the Front Body

    Before we can continue the front, woodenbody must now be added to the frame. At thisstage of assembly the steering shaft shouldbe protruding upward. Carefully lower thebody over this shaft. Secure the body to theframe using 1/4 inch hardware through theframe into the previously installed "T" nutsin the floorboard.

    Now you can install the steering columnNo. 050 down over the shaft. It is securedwith 5/16 hardware. There should be a collarNo. PP 239 already installed loosely abovethe pitman arm. Pull the shaft up throughball bearing No. PP 223 and secure with theretaining ring supplied with the shaft. Thebearing should fit snugly into column. Withthe bearing resting all the way into the col-umn, raise the collar below to limit the upand down movement of the shaft. Remove theset screw and apply Loc-Tite (blue) to both itand its threaded hole. Re-install and tightensecurely.

    Adding the Seat Supports

    Attach the right and left seat supports atthis time. Before adding the seat you shouldadd the control panel and parking brakebracket. To the control panel you will mountthe throttle cable and the key operated killswitch. The right hand seat support has #10 -32 tapped holes for attaching the above. Afterthe seat is added, you can mount the motioncontrol bracket and lever. Study the pictures.

  • Before the addition of the remaining bodyassemblies (seat & transmission cover) makesure all the controls function properly and allhardware is tight. The throttle bracketshown is what we used to install the Honda5.5 hp engine used. Other engines mayrequire a different throttle arrangement.

    On the Honda engine we temporarilyremoved the gas tank to get to the ignition.The supplied kill switch was removed and itswire removed from the coil. A new wire wasinstalled between the coil and the keyed killswitch. The remaining terminal on the switchmust be wired to the frame.

    You will note that we removed the parkingbrake lever from the transmission and re-installed it pointing down. This places it in aposition to match up to the actuating rodfrom the lever under the seat. Adjust to locknut on the transmission lever to assure thebrake being free when the parking brakelever is released. Adjust the locknuts on thebrake rod to position the brake in the off posi-tion and, also, apply spring pressure on thebrake lever when activated.

    The drive pulley is installed on the shaftand positioned to be in line with the trans-mission pulley. Tighten the two bolts on thepulley hub to clamp it to the engine shaft.The application of Loc-Tite (blue) to thesebolts is a good idea. If the shaft is drilled andtapped (usually 3/8 - 24 thd) you can fasten alarge fender washer to prevent the loss of thepulley.

    With the engine sufficiently to the rear,install the "V" belt (No. 4L340) and tightenthe nuts on the belt tightening rod until thebelt is tight enough to prevent slippage (ourshas about 3/4 inch deflection). Secure thedouble nuts on the adjustment and tightendown the bolts on the engine mount clamps.Do not over tighten - just enough to firmlyhold the engine.

    When you are ready, attach to seat assem-bly to the supports with 1/4 - 20 cap screws infour places. Next, attach to motion controlguide to the right hand arm rest with 1/4 inchlag bolts.

    Attach the motion control lever to thesplined shaft as shown. The splines allowcourse adjustments and the rod ends on thecontrol rod facilitate fine adjustments. Adjustuntil the transmission is in neutral when thecontrol lever is against the notch in the guideattached to the arm rest.

    We added an air (squeeze) horn to the leftarm rest. No detail of the mount is givenbecause the horn must be obtained whereavailable. We bought our's off Ebay. The sameapplies to the two oil lamps we added to thefront body. They are strictly for looks and notlight! Again, no detail of the mounting isgiven because you must find your own lampsand figure some way to mount them. Wefound our lamps on Ebay auction.

    The seat cushion was originally made forgo-karts with wide seats. Since it simply slipsover the seat back, it provides an inexpensiveway of "upholstering" the seat.

    A final touch is the addition of the floormat made from PP No. 227. Make a patternby measuring where it goes and cut to match.

    Gas up and start the engine. Make surethe transmission is in neutral, the parkingbrake on and the by-pass knob pulled out andsecured. This is the right time to purge thetransmission as explained earlier.

    Climb on and be prepared for a thrill of alifetime when you go around the block for thefirst time. Be prepared to be stared at, smiledat and be able to answer the first person whoasks, "What the hell is it?" Explain that it'syour version of Henry Ford's first car!

  • Notations on Hardware

    Through out our assembly drawings wehaven't mentioned anything about the manyuses of bolts, washers and nuts. To do sowould have complicated the clarity of theassembly.

    Holes provided in the various parts havebeen drilled to normal clearance diametersfor the bolt used. These holes are usually 1/32in. larger in diameter than the bolt intended.In the picture on this page, the bolts refer-enced are 5/16. Therefore, the holes would be11/32 in. Dia.

    We strongly recommend the use of Nylonlock nuts everywhere you have room forthem. We, also, recommend using a flat wash-er under the head of the bolt to avoid scratch-ing fresh paint with both the bolt andwrench.

    Almost all attachments to the frame arethrough holes in the tubular frame. Careshould be taken to not collapse the tubing bytightening too tight. We used double fenderwashers to add strength in these situations.The picture on this page illustrates what isrecommended.

    It is recommended that you buy all nutsand washers in lots of 100. You will save a lotand eliminate many trips to the hardwarestore.

    The pictures of the two bolt heads showthe head markings that indicate the categoryor strength of the bolt - the higher the catego-ry, the higher the strength of the bolt. A cate-gory 2 bolt will have no head markings andis, therefore, the weakest of the categories.You always add 2 to the number of headmarkings.

    In assembling this car, we recommendusing Category 5 bolts through out with theexception of axle attachment and anything to

    do with the steering mechanism, whichshould be category 8. The expense of betterhardware will be minimal compared to theoverall cost.

    Use Loc-Tite (blue) on all set-screws andareas where lock nuts do not apply. On thecap screws that attach the rear spindleto the hub, we strongly recommendusing permanent Loc-Tite (red) on thethreads.

  • The motion control linkage for the 319-0500 transaxle was designed to move the con-trol rod to the rear for the car to move for-ward. Just the opposite is needed when usinga 319-0650.

    By looking at drawing No. a091 you willsee 2 extra pillow blocks have been added tothe underside of the frame. To provide clear-ance for the parking brake lever, a 1/4 inchspacer block No. a090 is added.

    The parking brake was left in its originalposition. It, however, is now mounted on an18 inch piece of 5/8 dia. CRS. It will requireanother collar to hold it in the proper loca-tion. See drawing No. a094. The lever assem-bly could be welded to the shaft if you desire.

    The installation of the motion control tounderneath the frame requires the controlrod No. a092 to be reshaped. The bendingdimensions and angles are approximate andwill require some fine tuning for correctoperation.

    This modification, also, requires the con-trol lever to be longer. See drawing No. a093.

    The 3/8 dia holes used to mount the toppillow block must now be drilled clearthrough to underneath the frame. Naturally,longer bolts will be necessary.

    If you havent started construction on theframe, we have inclosed drawings of theframe members plus the control shaft bear-ing mount. Actually, this now becomes justthe parking brake bearing mount.

    I am sorry for it to be necessary to makethese modifications. This is the price I ampaying for calling out a specific transaxle andit, like others, being an endangered species.In future designs I may have to be a bit moregeneral in specific call outs.
