en g in eer or the facilities engineer, and they took th e ir roles seriously. In addition to being successful in constructing a car to specs they n eed ed to learn to cooperate and work effectively and efficiently to accomplish their goals,” says fifth-grade teacher, N oelani Chang.

“I th ink the spar pro ject creates decisionm aking and collaboration am ong team m em bers, shows my students the n eed to th ink and plan things first before executing ,” says sixth-grade teacher, Ju n e Yam anuha.

Both projects started with classroom visits by Civil & Environm ental E ng ineering instructo r Randy Akiona. D uring those first visits he talked abou t w hat engineers do and abou t the projects the fifth and sixth graders were abou t to em bark on. Mr. A kiona also m ade several visits after to check the progress of the students.

Those visits eventually led up to the com petitions.

T he spar competition held on May 18th at H olm es Hall. Each spar was ju d g e d on efficiency, design, weight, and how m uch load the spars could handle , which was the ultim ate test. A fter being weighed, each spar was p laced in the testing units. Buckets were h u n g from the fuselage and sand was added slowly until the spar failed. A fter each spar failed, the buckets o f sand were w eighed to determ ine its load.

M ore than ha lf o f the wing spars he ld over ten pounds o f sand an d the w inning spar was able to ho ld over fou rteen pounds.

T he je t toy competition was held on May 20th at the University o f Haw ai‘i Cam pus C en ter Ballroom . At the je t toy com petition , each g roup could sign up for a n u m b er o f events: Distance, tim e, tim e trials, and weight.

In the distance event, each je t toy was ju d g ed on how far it could go. In the tim e event, the je t toys were tim ed to see how long each toy could go before com ing to a com plete stop.In the tim e trials, j e t toys were p itted against each o th e r in races. T h e weight event showed each toy’s muscle, as they were given weights (rolls o f 10 pennies) to carry across a certain distance.

T he w inner o f the distance event m ade their j e t toy travel 32 feet. In the tim e event, the w inner was able to get th e ir toy to travel for alm ost 21 seconds. Finally, in the weight event, the w inning je t toy was able to carry twelve rolls o f pennies.

T he whole process of designing, constructing, and testing was a learn ing experience for the students. “I th ink the spar pro ject taugh t us a lot, like how you need team w ork and workm anship to assist a good design, an d I th ink this was a good way to teach us tha t there are a lo t o f things to be accountable for,” said sixth g rader Nicholas M attson.

It was an enjoyable experience for the students, b u t it was also great for the teachers as well. “I enjoyed the je t toy pro ject very m uch because it took the students th ro u g h the scientific process,” says fifth-grade teacher, Lauri Taguchi. “T he ch ild ren used problem -solving and tested the ir ideas. I liked th a t they were able to apply the skills th a t we have been teach ing them all year long .”

W hat a g reat way for the fifth and sixth-grade students from N oelani School to en d their school year. H
