Shot typesTypical horror/ Thriller shot types include low-angle mid shots, close ups and establishingshots. These shots are designed to emphasise the antagonist character and portray them aspowerful. Establishing shots are used to establish a setting, and make the genre clear to theaudience.

We tried to include as many establishing shots as possible in our film opening, to establishthe setting and genre to the audience as much as possible

The use of low lighting and exposure are also common themes of Horror/Thrillercinematography

Analysis of shot types

Low angle/ Low lighting,Portrays character as powerful.

Direct address to camera putsaudience in victims point of view,emphasising characters power.

Mid shot emphasises victims painAnd reveals to the audience blood.Low lighting reinforces horrifictheme.

High angle portrays him as weak andvulnerable, identifies him as victim.Long shot shows whole character,emphasising blood and charactersituation.

Similarly to the shot used inJason the low level lighting

makes the antagonist seem moremysterious and chilling. The lightpositioning hides the majority of

his face and the low angleportrays him as powerful.

The over the shoulder shot againreinforces the characters mystery,still not revealing his identity fully.The high angle OS shot shows thebloody knife and introduces

themes of murder and violence tothe film.

This highly lighted full shot introducesthe whole character to the audience. Itallows us to see the costume andbody language of the character,

identifying the character is in pain.

Black/White footage

The decision to use black and white footage was made to reinforce the chilling,

eerie atmosphere that is created by the fast paced shots and juxtaposing, unparallelmusic. The use of black and white also hugely emphasises the dark red colour usedin the titles. The dark red colour is often used in media existing products to signifydanger and emotion, the colour red immediately established the Horror genre to theaudience, hinting at themes of murder and violence that would reoccur throughoutthe film.

Clothing-During preparation for our product we studied many existing Horror/Thrillers and drew out a list ofconventions that would later inspire us include similar conventions in our production. To establish the genreof Thriller I was clothed in a full suit, this reinforces the Thriller genre as leading films in the genre such asGoodfellas, Reservoir Dogs and Carlitos Way include their main characters wearing a suite. The suit also

emphasises the role of the male Antagonist, a suit represents male power and conveys the main characteras a respected, powerful figure. The fact I was featured wearing a suit throughout the film opening is verycontrasting to that of typical Horror films. However suits have been a reoccurring theme throughout theThriller genre for years. We wanted the suit to portray a figure of power and authority, a power that wouldadd to the mystery and insanity of the character. Typical horror antagonists are clothed in specific uniformsor disguises, whereas Thriller protagonists are often featured wearing formal suits or fashionable attire.

MusicThe fact we have included a variety of bloody knife shots emphasises the Horrorgenre hugely, the bloody butchers knife has been used countless times in

existing Horror films to signify danger and it will again help to introduce themesof murder into our film. Film such as Jaws, Chloe and Carlitos Way have also

used simple piano riffs to build suspense and be atmospheric. We decided toloop the riff twice and then reverse the sound clip to provide a more dramaticending to our film opening. The reversed sound signifies a change inatmosphere, from then on the clips start to become more tense and violent.
