Cal 20 Nationals To Be Held Here

This year's Cal 20 National Championships will be held here on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 17, 18, and 19. Hosting the event will be the Marina del Rey Cal 20 Club arid Windjammers YC.
More than 60 skippers are expected to tum out for the three-day competition, now in its ninth year. Among past champions racing will be Dave Heggie (photo) in his Cal 20 "Hana Pau" (sail #206).
A total of five races will be held: two on Friday, two on Saturday, and one on Sunday. By the end of Friday's racing, boats will be divided into separate Championship and Consolation divisions for the final two days of racing. Trophies will be awarded for the first five places in each division, and participation awards will be presented to each skipper and crew competing.

Sunset Series: Inside All SCYA yacht club members in the
Marina del Rey area are invited by California YC to participate in its small boat Sunset Series for skippers of all ages now being held each Thursday evening inside Marina del Rey.
Races begin at 6 p.m. at the California YC guest dock. Charts of courses to be used are available at the starting line, and winners' pennants are awarded after each race.

New Commodore At Venice YC
Ralph Zimmerman has been elected Commodore of Venice YC to fill the unexpired term of Clinton Sheltra, who resigned.
Plans are now underway for a complete redecoration of the YC's clubhouse on Palawan Way, and for an active summer and fall cruise schedule.
Other officers at Venice YC are: Mel Lurie, Vice Commodore; Jerry Roos, Rear Commodore; Alex Hunter, Junior Staff Commodore; Marcella Roth, Secretary; and Jay Wood, Treasurer.

advises that Marina del Rey North Jetty Shoal Buoy 3B (LL PG 39) has been established in approximate position Lat. 33° 57'55" N., Long. 118° 27'19" W. in 20 feet of water. The buoy is a black can buoy marking a shoal area along the north jetty wall. Marina del Rey North Jetty Shoal Buoy 3B (LL PG 39) has been renamed Marina del Rey North Jetty Shoal Buoy 3C (LL PG 39).

Begun last November, with completion of an indoor pool designed for the purpose, the scuba classes of the Hogan brothers (who have themselves been diving for 20 years )and their three full time instructors (two of them former Navy forgman instructors) differ some· what from older methods which stressed top physical fitness as a prerequisite to diving. Using a philosophy of "diving with your head, not your back", students are taught instead how not to get tired underwater.
Aimed largely at boatowners who in the view of the Hogans "miss 75% of boating's fun by not scuba diving", courses offered range from a "junior" program (using fins, mask, and snorkel only) to advanced diver's training. In the near future, a program of deep sea divin~ to 40 fathoms will probably also be offered.

It is with this long interest that Pioneer Skip· pers, Inc. continues its purpose to encourage and promote the pleasure of boating. We also sponsor the annual Christmas Boat Parade. Our 8th Pa· rade is scheduled for Sunday, December 20. 1970.
As a boatowners organizat ion, we are seeking to achieve equity for the boatowner in Marina del
Rey in the face of zealous commercial property development. Having achieved a voluntary mora· torium on slip rent increases through joint dis· cussions with t he County of L.A. and the Lessees, we are seeking fair and reasonable slip rates. Our next objective is to have each anchorage set aside the required parking for the boatowner and his guests.
