SECTION 2.0CARTON MARKING PANEL GROUPS

There are many types and shapes of cartons used to pack Coleman’s products. Each product requires different packaging based on product geometry. The type and shape of the carton will determine the location of the required markings outlined in section 1.0.

Every carton will have six panels (sides) when assembled:

FRONT PANEL

BACK PANEL

TOP PANEL (S)

BOTTOM PANEL (S)

SIDE 1 PANEL (S)

SIDE 2 PANEL (S)

The carton markings can be grouped together by which panel the markings appear on.

The following pages displays each carton panel and which markings belong with that panel.

10

Page 11: PURPOSE SCOPE - Coleman

SECTION 3.0DETERMINING CARTON MARKING LOCATIONS

Step 1: Identify carton panels

1.1 Identify the carton’s top and bottom

A carton’s “natural bottom” is the side of the box that will provide the most stability for the carton during handling. This will become the bottom. In many cases, the carton will be placed on a moving conveyor belt, which will convey the carton at a high rate of speed. This is the reason it is critical to identify the carton’s “natural bottom” first, and place the carton markings where they will be able to be processed when the carton is placed on a conveyor belt. If the carton markings are incorrectly placed, the carton will not be able to be processed during handling.

NOTICE: In some cases, a carton’s natural bottom is not the best carton bottom for the integrity of the carton and product. Discretion should be used when determining the carton’s top and bottom panel. Product and carton integrity are critical. Only use the natural bottom if the product and carton allow. Otherwise, use the best layout possible for product protection.

IDENTIFYING THE CARTON’S “NATURAL BOTTOM”:1.1.1 Using the outside dimensions of each surface panel(s) of the assembled carton, determine which surface panel(s) has the most area.

Example: If the carton type used is a long rectangle end-load type, the choices would be as follows:

TOP

TOP

TOP

CORRECTThe surface withthe most area is the natural bottom

INCORRECTThis surface doesnot have themost area

INCORRECTThis surface doesnot have themost area

11

Page 12: PURPOSE SCOPE - Coleman

SECTION 3.0DETERMINING CARTON MARKING LOCATIONS

1.2 Identify the carton’s front and side panels.

1.2.1 The front panel will be the largest panel remaining that is not the top or bottom.1.2.2 The side panels will be the minor panel remaining. Side 1 is always found immediately to the right of the front panel. Side 2 is always found immediately to the left of the front panel.

Note : In this example, the side panel consists of two panels, which will be closed together to form one side of the carton.

Exceptions are made to the natural bottom rule when the product requires. (See section 5.0 Example 3)12

SECTION 3.0DETERMINING CARTON MARKING LOCATIONS

Step 2. Match the carton marking requirements (located in Section 2) to the panels identified.

After each panel has been identified, match the panel markings from Section 2.0 with thecorresponding panel. (Shown below)

Products which contain CO2 cartridges may need to be marked with ORM-D, if required by the DOT regulations. Examples would be inflatable PFD's, rearming kits, inflatable life rings, etc. If a product must be marked the following guidelines must be followed.. For the US:

ORM-D is in bold letters with the rectangle .25 inches larger on all sides than the print font, so if the font of the ORM-D was 1 inch high, then the rectangle would be located 1.25 inches from the print.  The words “CONSUMER COMMODITY”, is placed outside of the rectangle as shown.  The label must be placed on at least one side or end of the box.

For Canada:

Bien de Consommation would be placed under Consumer Commodity.  Both words need to be on the label for shipments in Canada. Each means of containment is marked on one side, other than a side on which it is intended to rest or to be stacked during transport.  The words or abbreviations are visible and legible and displayed on a contrasting background.
