How Sacred Rivers get Purified?

Mother Ganga Devi told Bhagiratha, "Oh king, I do not wish to go down to earth because people filled with their sins, will come to bathe in my water thus washing their sins in me. Oh Bhagiratha, where will I wash the accumulated sins of public?“

In answer to this King Bhagiratha said to Mother Ganga Devi,

sādhavo nyāsinah śāntābrahmisthā loka-pāvanāhharanty agham te 'ńga-sańgāttesv āste hy agha-bhid dharih(Srimad Bhagavatam 9.9.6)

"Oh Mother Ganga, when the saintly persons who are attached to the Supreme Lord take bath in you, you will become free from all accumulated sins of people because the pure devotees keep the Bhagavan Sri Krsna in their hearts who destroys all sins. "

But, why Bhagavan?Why not Brahman?Why not Paramatma?

We are all part of Brahman ..But still our hearts may not be pure..

Paramatma is in everyone’s heartStill those hearts may not be pure ..

But Bhagavan residesonly in a pure heart ..

What is the sign of a pure heart?
