Well,whataninterestingstarttotheyear!DorotheaMcKellar’s,“MyCountry”(firstpublishedin1908)stillsdefinesAustralia.

I love a sunburnt countryA land of sweeping plainsOf ragged mountain rangesOf drought and flooding rains.

Morerainthisyearthantheprevioustwoorthreeyears’totals!!Riversandcreeksareflowing,damsarereplenished.It’sgreenasfarastheeyecanseebuttherealchangehasbeeninthefacesofthepeople.Wecanseethatspiritshavelifted;thatconfidencehasbeenrestored.However,thepathwaybackformanyofthepeopleintheSouthWestwillcontinuetochallenge.Onemonthofgoodandimportantlywidespreadrain,doesnotwipetheledgercreatedbythesevenoreightyearsofseveredrought.

HavingjustgotthroughallthatandtherampagingfiresinmanypartsofAustralia,wack,alongcomesthethreatofapandemic.

Liketheotherhospitalandhealthservices(HHSs),ourhealthservicewillbecalledupontoprovideleadershipinthecontainmentofthe“coronavirus”(orCOVID-19).Thiswillrequiregoodpreparation,excellentcommunicationandstrongpartnershipswithotherHHSs,localgovernment,otheragenciesandotherhealthproviders.WhileitisunlikelythattheSouthWestHospitalandHealthService(SWHHS)willbethefrontlineoftheresponse,wewillbeexpectedtodowhatwecan.Weneedtobepreparedbutshouldnotoverreact.Weneedtolistentoadviceoftheexperts.Ourmessagingwillbeimportant.

AveryimportantissuewhichLindaandIhaveagreedneedsmoreemphasisistheroleoftheHHSinprovidingopportunitiesfortraineeships.Everyoneknowshowimportantitistotryandkeepyoungpeopleinthearea.Everyeconomicforceseemstobeworkingtopullkidsaway.That’snotgoodforthefutureeconomicandsocialimpactofourcommunities.TheSWHHSisthelargestemployerinallthecommunitiesintheSouthWest.Weofferthewidestrangeofrolesfromclinical,toadministrative,tooperationalroles.School-basedandpostschooltraineeshipsarearelativelylow-costmethodofprovidingopportunitiesforyoungpeople.Theskillsthatpeoplegaincanmakethemproductivemembersofthestaff.Theymayhelpto“growourown”,providingfuturestabilityforourworkforceandimportantlylocaljobswithacommensuratebenefittolocaleconomies.Wehaveanobligationasagoodcitizeninthecommunitieswhichsupportus.LindaandIwilltalkmoreaboutthisinthecomingmonths.

TheFebruaryBoardmeetingwasaninterestingoneinmanyways.OriginallyscheduledforWallumbilla,wehadtodemonstratesomeresilienceasmostroadsinandoutofRomawerecut.

HalfoftheBoardmembershadtoparticipatebyteleconference.ThatseemedtoworkOK.

AtthatBoardmeetinginFebruary,wewereprivilegedtohaveavisitfromAssociateProfessorRobynLittlewood,whowasappointedasinitialchairofHealthandWellbeingQueenslandlatelastyear.Robynspokewithpassionandenthusiasmabouttheirwork,whichisfocussedonpracticalandeffectivewaystoimprovethehealthoutcomesforQueenslanders.Thereisnomagicwandorsilverbullet.AswellasaddressingtheBoard,Robynworkedwithlocalstafftoadvancebothourwellnessagendas.

Robynunderstandsthatlocallyledinitiativesaremuchmorelikelytobesustainable.Thosevaluessitreallywellwithourobjectivetoshiftthefocusmoretowardsstrategiestopromotehealthlifestylesinourcommunities.WeareverydifferentfromthebigmetrosandregionalHHSs,whosemaininterestslieintheacutecarearea.Wecoverthefieldfromprimaryandcommunitycaretoacutecaretoagedcare.Thehealthoutcomesforourcommunitiesareinferiortothoseonthecoast.Wecanandmustdobetter!!

ProfessorLittlewoodhasagreedtopresentatourCommunityAdvisoryNetwork(CAN)ForuminOctoberinCharleville.Thiswillbeanexcitingopportunitytoexplorehowwecanworkinpartnershipwithourvolunteers,localgovernment,AboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderhealthservicesandotherhealthservicesintheSouthWesttoimprovethehealthandwellbeingoftheresidentsoftheSouthWest.

AsIwritethisarticleforFebruary,wehavebeeninundatedbyrainacrosstheSouthWest!Absolutelylovelytoseeeverythingsogreenandthecountrybouncebacksoquicklynowthattheconcernforeveryone’swellbeingcanstarttosubside.

Ireallydoacknowledgethelengthsourpeoplehavegoneto,toensureourcommunitiesweresafeandpreparedfortheeventsthatresultedduetoriversrisingandstormshitting.Everyonehasdonesoexceptionallywell,andthespiritoftheSouthWestwasaliveandkicking,whichyouwillseeinourphotossharedinthePulsethismonth.Thankyouforyourdedication,compassion,andthoughtfulnesstowardoneanotherandthoseweserve.

Thisisaperfecttimenowtoreviewoursystemsandplansforemergencypreparednessandbusinesscontinuity–asmuchisalwayslearnedeachtimeweactivatethem.

Similarly,youwillhaveallbeendiscussingtheCOVID-19preparednessneedsacrossourservices.TherisksfortheglobalimpactofCOVID-19areveryhighduetotheincreaseininternationalspreadofcases;largeclustersofcasesnowreportedoutsideofChina;thelimitationsofsomecountriestotestandcontain;andpotentialmedicalsupplyshortages.ItisanevolvingsituationthatisrequiringdailyupdatesandlinksintotheStatewideHealthEmergencyCoordinationCentre.WehaveactivatedourPandemicPlantoensureourpreparedness,andwecontinuetomeetseveraltimesaweektoprogressstrengtheningourreadiness,andplanningforallcasescenarios.It’snormalandunderstandabletofeelalittleanxiouswithsomeofthereporting,butpleasecontinuetoseekofficialsourcesofinformation(throughtheQueenslandGovernmentwebsite),ensuregoodhandhygienethroughhandwashing,andstayhomeifunwell.

Wewillcontinuetokeepallstaffupdatedeveryweekormorefrequentlyasinformationcomestohand.

Betweentheseevents,andtheearlierbushfiresinotherpartsofourbeautifulcountry,itdoesmakeyouappreciateaquietdaywhenyoucanstopandthinkandplan.

Ascaregivers,youarealwaysthinkingaboutothersfirst,sopleasetakesometimetorechargeandcareforyourselves,andeachother.Ourvaluesarepartofwhoweareatworkbutalsoinourlives.Beingaccountableandcompassionatealsomeansknowingwhentoleanonacolleague,askforhelp,ortakeabreak;asitdoesforlookingforthesignsinothersandhelpingmaketheirneedforhelpaneasythingtodo.

TheSouthWestHospitalandHealthServicewillrolloutnewOccupationalViolencePrevention(OVP)trainingtoallstaffoverthenextfewmonths.

Twoofourstaff,JeffPotterandLawrieUsher,recentlyreturnedfromanintensivetwo-weekprogramwithMaybo–thenewlyappointedexternalproviderforOVPtraining–andwillbevisitingSouthWestfacilitiestodelivertheone-daytrainingforgroupsofupto12peopleatatime.

LindaPatat,HealthServiceChiefExecutive,said“equippingourstaffwithalltechniquespossibletosupportsafeenvironmentsisakeypriorityforus.Thisspecialisedtrainingincludesconflictmanagementandphysicalinterventionthatwouldallowclinicallyrelatedchallengingbehaviourtobemanagedinaflexibleandsafemanner,basedonpatientneed”.

“Maybowillensurethatabestpracticeapproachistakenat

alltimesandwillensureconsistencyacrossallQueenslandfacilities,”shesaid.

JeffPotterfoundthetrainingtobesomeofthebestinhiscareer,sharing“TheyhaveextensivedemonstratedexperienceinthedeliveryofconflictresolutionandassaultavoidancetraininginthehealthcaresectorbothinAustralia,andaroundtheworld.

“Ithasalayeredandblendedapproach.Theyprovideacomprehensivetrainingprogramtomeettheneedsofstaffindifferentserviceareas,allarebasedonahumanrightsapproachwithaperson-centredfocus.

“BothLawrieandIarelookingforwardtobringingthenewtrainingtotheSouthWest.”

IntheSouthWest,ourworkplacesnaturallyreflectourculturaldiversity,andtheevidenceforpromotinginclusiveworkplacesandworkplacebehavioursisstrong:higherlevelsofinnovation;reducedabsenteeism;ahealthierandmore

inclusiveworkenvironment;andevenabetterbottomline.

Thisyear,incelebrationofHarmonyDay,wewouldliketoinviteallteamstocelebrateyourownworkplace’sculturaldiversitythroughour“ShareaPlate.DiscoveraStory”event.Chooseaday,andbringalongaplateoffood–andshareyourhistoryandyourstorywithothers.

Agroupof30studentsfromfiveSouthWesthighschoolswillcometogetherinJuneforHOPE’ssixthannualDeadlyRecruitsProgram.

HOPE’sSueEustace-EarlemetwithmembersoftheAustralianDefenceForce(ADF)RecruitingteaminearlyFebruarytodiscussplansforthisyear’sevent,whichwillonceagainbeheldatTinnenburra,aremotepropertyoutsideofCunnamullafrom21to26June.

DeadlyRecruitswillseetheHOPEteamtakethestudentstoTinnenburraforfivenightstosimulatearmylifeintheoutback.

“It is a great way to introduce students to the defence force. If they do enjoy it and want to make it their career they can be supported to pursue further from being at Deadly Recruits,”Suesaid.

“During the program they will hike, jog, put up tents and basically learn how to survive in the bush. It gives them great insight into what it would be like being in the army.

AtthetimetheSouthWestHospitalandHealthBoardwasestablishedin2012theBoardwascommittedtobuildingstronglocalrelationshipsandmeaningfulconsumerandcommunityengagementthatwouldinfluenceandshapethedesignanddeliveryofhealthservices.AstheSouthWesthasalargegeographicalareaitwasdecidedtoestablishtheConsumerandCommunityAdvisoryNetwork(CAN)acrossallfacilitiesintheSouthWestHHS,includingMultipurposeHealthServices(MPHSs),hospitalsandcommunityclinicsasitwasimportanttolistenandunderstandissuesandneedsacrossveryuniquecommunities.

The15localCANsaretheSouthWestHospitalandHealthService’s(SWHHS)principlemechanismforconsumerandcommunityengagement.TheCANsareourkeystakeholdersandhaveproveninvaluabletotheSWHHSastheyprovidemeaningfulinputandfeedback.TheCANsthroughtheirlocalknowledgeandunderstandingofissuesraisemattersthatareimportanttotheircommunitiesandofferrecommendationsandsolutionsthatwillworkforthem.Theymakeavaluablecontributiontothehealthsystemandstrengthenlinksbetweenhealthservicesandtheirlocalcommunitiesandaretheexpertswhoareabletobringeachcommunity’sperspectiveforwardtoachievebetterhealthoutcomes.

AsaHealthServiceandacommunity,wecontinuallyseekimprovementtounderstandwhatisworkingandwhereandhowwecanengagemoreeffectively.ComplementingourCANs,ouragedcareresidentialfacilitiesintheSouthWest,WesthaveninRomaandWaroonainCharleville,haveAgedCareConsumerandFamiliesAdvisoryCommittees.Thesecommitteesareintegralinensuringtheneedsofourconsumersaremetandtoenhancethesafety,health,wellbeingandqualityoflifeoftheconsumerswhoareinresidentialagedcare.

Sincetheirinception,theCAN’shaveconsolidatedtheirroleasthepeakcommunityandconsumeradvisorycommitteetotheBoardandhaveundertakenimportantdiscussionswiththeirnetworksandlocalcommunitiesaboutvariousissuesconcerninghealthservicesinourregion.OurCANsprovideauniquecommunityandconsumerperspectivetoallaspectsofourhealthservice’soperationandhealthcaredelivery.

SouthWestHHScontinuestopushtheenvelopewithacontinuingfocusonongoingdailyimprovement,searchingforwaystoalwaysensureweremainfocusedonsafety,andorganisationallearning.

Followingsuccessfulimplementationofthe‘agilewayofworking’,addingtothemixisaquickstandupmeetingthreetimeseveryweek,whereeveryserviceandsupportareafromacrossthehealthservicejoinsintoateleconferenceto‘check-in’aboutsafetyandkeysafetymessages.

Itisasupportiveframeworkthatpromotesresponsiveaction,sharedsupportandfocusoncoregoals.Thestand-upbriefingsbringtogetherDirectorsofNursingandServiceDirectorswithwiderrepresentationacrossworkplacehealthandsafety,infectioncontrol,building,engineeringandmaintenance,operationalservicesandinformationandcommunicationstechnology(ICT).

Withathree-partagenda,focussingonfourfundamentaltopics,eachhuddlehasadedicatedleaderandparticipants,withsessionsrunningatstrictlyscheduledtimes(8:45to9am)everyMonday,WednesdayandFriday.

Eachsessionreviewsthefollowingcoretopicsbasedontheprevious24to48hours,whatispredictedforthenext24to48hoursandfinallyanyemergentrisksand/orotherissuesthatneedresolution:

SouthWest’sAshleighHotschilt(DentalAssistant)andLisaRippon(SeniorOralHealthTherapist)dressedupasthefairiesanddelightedthechildreninafunwayaboutoralhygiene.

“Tostart,wereadthechildrenastoryabout“DougtheSugarbug”andhowifyouleavehimonyourteethhecanmakeholesbysquirtingacidonthem.Thekidsthought‘Doug’wasn’tverynice!Causenoonewantsholesintheirteeth,”Lisasaid.

“Thenweshowedthekidshowtogetridof‘Doug’fromtheirteethbybrushinginbigcirclesontheoutsideoftheirteeth,thenscrubbingthechewingpartsandfinallyflickingontheinsides(nearyourtongue).

“Weremindedthemthatweneedtobrush‘Doug’offourteethtwiceaday(morningandnight)butmostimportantlynottorinsethetoothpasteoutofourmouthsafterwehavebrushed.”

Lisasaidtheyalsotooktheir“MinionPlaqueCave”wheretheyputanultravioletdyeontheteethandthengotthechildrentogointothecavetoseeif‘Doug’wasstillontheirteeth.

“AndwowtooursurpriseallthekidsatMorvenStateSchoolhadbeencleaning‘Doug’offtheirteethreallywell.Itwasgreatworkonthekidsbehalf.”

OverthecomingweekstheMinionToothFairieswillbevisitingAugathellaStateSchoolandWyandraStateSchooltoseehowwellthekidsarebrushingandlookingaftertheirteeth.

SouthWestresidentsusedFebruarytohelpkickstarthealthyhabitsfor2020aspartofanewnationalinitiativecalledFebfast.

“YoumaynothavemadeaNewYear’sresolutionbutit’snevertoolatetostartworkingonahealthieryou,’’SouthWest’sCommunityPreventionOfficerMichaelReddansaid.

“WepromotedFebfastacrosstheSouthWestinthehopeofpeopleparticipatinginthenationalinitiativewhereindividualscalltimeoutonalcohol,sugaroranotherunhealthyviceoftheirchoice–suchastoomuchcoffee,chocolate,hotchips,hamburgersandotherfattyfood–anythingtheychoose.

“It’stheperfectwaytokick-starttheyearwithsomegoodhealthbehaviours.It’salsoagoodwayofhelpingdisadvantagedyoungpeoplebecauseifyoutakepartinFebfastandraisesomemoneydoingso,itwillallgotoagoodcause.’’

SouthWest’sCommunityNutritionistRohanBallon–whosupportedFebfast–saidtheHealthofQueenslanders2018reportshowedthatalthoughtherateofsmokingintheSouthWesthadfallento17percentfrom22percentin2016,itwasstillhigherthanthestateaverage.

“Thenumberofpeopleself-reportingashavingan

unhealthyweight–32percent–remainedunchangedbetween2016and2018but,justlikethesmokingrate,itwassignificantlyhigherthanthestateaverage,’’hesaid.

RohanencouragedstaffandcommunitymemberstovisittheStateGovernment’sHealthier.Happier.campaigntohelpthemperformanhonestassessmentoftheirdietandlifestyleandfindwaystoimprovetheirhealthinthehopeofmakingchangesthatstick!

HOPE’sCommunityProgramOfficer,JennyPeacockgotthecommunityinvolvedintheCharlevilleeventtohelpraiseawarenessaroundmentalwellbeing.“TheBlueTreeProjectishelpingsparkdifficultconversationsalloverAustraliaandencouragepeopletospeakupwhenbattlingmentalhealthconcerns,”Jennysaid.

“Byspreadingthepaintandspreadingthemessagethat“it’sOKtonotbeOK”,wecanhelpbreakdownthestigmathat’sstilllargelyattachedtomentalhealth.”

JennygottogethermembersoftheCharlevillecommunityincludingLifeline,theMurwehShireCouncil,theRoyalFlyingDoctorsandtheCharlevilleNeighbourhoodCentretohelppaintthetreeblue.

SouthWest’sCommunityNutritionistRohanBallonsaidthehealthservicehadpartneredwithFoodworksMitchelltohostthetwocookingdemonstrationsinFebruary.

Rohansaiditwasentirelypossibleforruralandregionalresidentstomakehealthyeatingchoices.

“Withsomethoughtandplanning,youcanproducemealsforyourselfandyourfamilythatarebothhealthyandbudgetconscious,’’hesaid.

“OurgoalwiththecookingdemonstrationsatMitchellwastoshowyoucanprepareamealforafamilyoffourforunder$20withgroceriespurchasedentirelylocally.

MrBallonsaidtheMitchelldemonstrationhadbeenorganisedbyGriffithUniversitynutritionanddieteticsstudentsGeorgiaVolzandDylanTapp,whowerecurrentlydoingworkplacementsundersupervisionintheSouthWest.

“We’rehopingthiscookingandnutritioneducationdemonstrationcannowbeusedasatemplateforsimilarprogramsinothercommunities,’’hesaid.

“Anditwon’tbejustcookingandpreparingmeals,wewillalsobeprovidingadviceandeducationongoodnutritionandhealthyeatinghabits.’’

MrBallonthankedFoodworksMitchellforitsinvolvementintheprogram.

“It’sagreatexampleoflocalbusinessesandorganisationspartneringwithourhealthservicetohelpspreadimportanthealthmessagingthroughoutthecommunity,’’hesaid.

TheMitchellcookingdemonstrationandnutritioneducationprogramwaspartoftheSouthWest’songoingHealthyCommunitiesinitiative.

“OurHealthyCommunitiesinitiativeisdesignedtohelpSouthWestresidentseatwell,bemoreactiveandcreateenvironmentsthatsupportandencouragehealthylifestylebehaviours,especiallythesedayswhenasignificantproportionofpeopleleadamoresedentarylifestyleandarenotactiveeveryday,’’hesaid.

HesaidtheHealthyCommunitiesinitiativewasakeypriorityoftheSouthWestHHSStrategicPlan.

“Whatwewanttoachieveistokeeppeoplehealthyandavoidthemhavingtocometohospitalinthefirstplace,’’hesaid.

“Aspartofourstrategicplanoverthenextfouryears,wearefocussingonarangeof‘healthycommunities’initiativesdesignedtoreducetheburdenofchronicdiseaseinourregionandtherateofavoidablehospitaladmissions.’’

HealthandWellbeingQueensland(HWQld)visitedtheSouthWestattheendofFebruarytodiscusshealthandwellbeingprioritieswiththecommunityandtogainafirst-handlookathowtheSouthWestHHSHealthyCommunitiesinitiativeissupportinglocalstomakepositivechangestotheirlifestyles.

AssociateProfessorRobynLittlewood,CEOHWQldsaidshewasexploringhowHWQldcouldsupportcommunitiesacrossQueenslandtodevelop,expandandleadtheirownhealthandwellbeingefforts.

TheSouthWestwasoneofherfirststops.AstheCEOshesaidshewantedtotalktolocalsaboutwhattheyneedtofeelsupportedandempoweredtoadopthealthylifestylechanges.

“It’simportantthatwecansupportpeopleonallfronts–intheworkplace,inthehomeandinthecommunity.It’sallaboutcreatinghealthyplacesandsystemstomakeiteasyforpeopletomoveandeathealthier.Thisisaboutmakingeveryone’slifebetter,”shesaid.

“Eatingmorefruitandvegetables,andincorporatingplentyofphysicalactivityintooureveryday,arewaysthatwecanallimproveourhealthandreduceourriskofchronicdisease.

“Itsoundssosimple,butweunderstandthatit’sactuallysocomplex.Changestooursocietyincludingreducedexercise,poordietshighinsugar,fatandsalt,andtimespentinfrontofscreensiscontributingtoweightgainandobesityonapopulationlevel.”

DuringhervisitAssociateProfessorLittlewoodtookpartinoneofthe‘toolboxtalk’sessionswheretheymeasuredwhatsheateanddrankovera24hourperiod.

SouthWestHHSCommunityNutritionistRohanBalloncoordinatedthedemonstrationandsaidthesameconcepthadbeenrolledoutinalocalworkplaceaspartofa‘toolboxtalk’session.

“It’stakingtheconceptofahealthyeatingtalkandturningitintoareallyinteractivesessionthatismoreengagingforpeople,”hesaid.

“TheHealthyCommunitiesteamactuallycodevelopedthisideawithRoma-basedweldingbusinessFleming’sWeldingService,aspartofasuiteofwellnessactivitiesfortheirworkplace.

“RobyngotreallyintoitandwasimpressedbywhatweareachievinghereintheSouthWestforourcommunities.”

REGIONAL COMMUNITY FORUM PROMISES TO DRIVE GROWTH IN THE SOUTH WEST

Digitalconnectivity,educationaltourism,droughtandwatersecurity,mentalhealthservices,accesstoskillingandtraining,andtheattractionandretentionofskilledworkerswereallhottopicsdiscussedatthesecondPalaszczukGovernmentRegionalCommunityForumfortheDarlingDownsSouthWestQueenslandregionatRomaon2March,2020.

Theforum,oneofsevenheldacrossregionalQueenslandrecently,broughtlocalcommunitymemberstogetherwithgovernmentrepresentativestodiscussopportunitiestodrivefuturejobsandgrowthintheregion.

TheDarlingDownsSouthWestForumwaschairedbyMemberforIpswichandAssistantMinisterforVeteransAffairsandAssistantMinisterofStateJenniferHowardMP,andwasjoinedbyMinistersMarkBaileyMPandStirlingHinchliffeMP.

TheGovernmentcontinuestosupportregionalQueenslanderstoboosttheeconomyandcreatejobs,andtheseforumsensurethecommunityhasastrongvoicetotalkaboutlocalstrengths,challengesandpriorities.

Queenslandisavast,uniqueStateandnotworegionsarethesame,butitwasapparentfromthefirstroundofforumslastOctoberthattherewereconsistentthemesbeingraisedlocally,whichwe’venowmadestrategicprioritiesfordiscussion.

Discussionscentredonskillsandtraining,droughtandwatersecurity,supportforsmallbusiness,emergingindustries,tourismincludingIndigenoustourismandaccesstogovernmentservices.

TheGovernment’scommitmenttoregionalQueenslandremainsanabsolutepriorityanditisempoweringlocalpeopletofindlocalsolutionstosupportnewjobs&industries.

“DarlingDownsSouthWestForummemberswillworkwiththeQueenslandGovernment’sOfficeforRuralandRegionalQueenslandtoconsiderwhatoutcomesaremostimportanttothelocalcommunityandtodeveloplocalactionplans,”shesaid.

Atotalof27newnursingandmidwiferygraduatesstartedtheircareerswiththeSouthWeston10February.

“Thisisoneofthelargestsingleintakesofnursingandmidwiferygraduateswehaveacceptedinourhealthservice,’’SouthWestHHSExecutiveDirectorofNursingandMidwiferyServicesChrisSmallsaid.

“Itisagreatchanceforaspiringnursesalloverthestatetogostraightfromfinishingtheirdegreestokickstartingtheircareersandtheseextranurseswilllearnonthejobandtranslatetheskillsthey’velearntatUniintobetteroutcomesforpatientsacrosstheSouthWest.”

Chrissaidoverthepastfewyears,theSouthWestHHShadbeenexperiencingastronglevelofinterestfromnewnursingandmidwiferygraduatesinjoiningthehealthserviceandhebelievesthisisreflectiveofthefacttheSouthWestisbeingviewed

asanincreasinglyattractiveareainwhichtopursuetheircareers.

“Inaddition,sinceMarch2017,our12-monthgraduatetransitionprogramhasbeenendorsedbytheUniversityofSouthernQueenslandfortwocreditpointstowardsanyfuturecourseofstudythegraduatesmightwanttoembarkuponastheircareersprogress.’’

Chrissaidthisyear’snewgraduatesincludedexistingcurrentSouthWestHHSemployeesAnitaBadgeryandsisters-in-lawAnnabelandJodyTully.

“AnitapreviouslywasanAssistantinNursingatWesthavenAgedCareFacilityinRoma,whileAnnabelandJodywereAssistantsinNursingatQuilpie,withJodynowworkingatAugathella,’’hesaid.

“IwouldliketocommendallthreeonthesuccessoftheirstudiesandthededicationandcommitmenttheyshowedinpursuingtheirgoalswhilecontinuingtoworkatWesthaven,

QuilpieandAugathellathroughouttheirstudies.’’

ThenewgraduatesspentaweekatRomaHospitalfororientationbeforedispersingtotheirvariousdesignatedlocationsfortheir12-monthgraduateprogram.

“Theyhavechosenanexcellenttimetostarttheircareers,giventhat2020hasbeendesignatedworldwideastheYearoftheNurseandMidwife,andweareveryexcitedtowelcomethem,’’hesaid.

Oncetheirorientationiscomplete,thenewgraduateswillbeassignedtothehealthfacilitiesatInjune(2),Mungindi(2),Mitchell(2),Surat(2),Augathella(2),StGeorge(2),Cunnamulla(2),Dirranbandi(2),Quilpie(2),Roma(3),Charleville(4),Waroona(1)andWesthaven(1).

“TheseincludetwomidwiferygraduateswhohavebeenallocatedtoCharlevilleandRomaandonedualdegreeregisterednurse/paramedicgraduatewhohasbeenallocatedtoAugathella,’’Chrissaid.

Asinpreviousyears,theSouthWestwillwelcomeasecond,smallerintakeofgraduatenursesandmidwivesinAugust.

Stronggovernanceprocesses,alignmentwithpolicyandproceduresandgoodcarebeingprovidedwerethreeconsistentmessagestheaccreditorsrelayedbacktostaffaftertheSouthWestHHS’s2020accreditationlastmonth.

Infact,theirexactwordswerethatwe‘walkthetalk’.

Inparticular,theysharedourstandoutareasasbeing:

Theassessorscommentedthatinruralfacilitiescommunitieswerepartofourfamilyandviceversa.Thestarkdifferencebetweenoursitesandbiggercitiesinrelationtothiswasrewardingtohear.

Unfortunately,wereceivedone‘notmet’areaforCommunicatingforSafety(Standard6)inrelationtoclinicalhandovernotbeingconsistentlyattendedatallsites,andparticularlytheapplicationofthreepointsofidentificationandcompliancewithpatientidentificationbandinclusions.

Wehavecommencedrectificationworktoensurewemeetthisstandard.

Wealsoreceivedimportantinsightsinrelationtoareasforimprovementacrossthestandardsandactionplanswillbeproducedandsharedoverthecomingweeks.

SouthWestHHSChiefExecutiveLindaPatatsaidduringtalkswithstaffsheconsistentlyheardtheintentiontomaintainourlevelofperformance(particularlywithmandatorytraining,documentationandclosingtheloopwithpatientandconsumerevaluation)toavoidadditionalworkinthefuture.

Shesaidthiscommitmentalignedwithourphilosophyofbeing‘accreditation-readyeveryday’andbolsteredustomoveforwardfromawell-preparedbaseposition.

Sheextendedherthanksandappreciation,onbehalfoftheSWHHSBoardandtheExecutiveTeam,totheSouthWestfamilyfor“yourongoingdedicationandcommitmenttoprovidingthehighestdegreeofconfidencetoourcommunitythattheirhealthservicesare–andremain-ofthehighestquality”.

SHARING EXCELLENCE – QUARTERLY PERFORMANCE & ACCOUNTABILITY

SouthWestHHSDirectorsofNursing,businessmanagersandotherkeystaffacrossourfacilities,includingtheoralhealthandmentalhealthportfolio,participatedinthequarterlyperformanceandaccountabilitydiscussionsheldattheendofJanuaryandearlyFebruary.

ThesestocktakemeetingsarehelddirectlywiththeExecutiveTeamtoreviewongoingperformanceagainstarangeofactivityaswellasbeingopportunitiesforcolleaguestoshareoperationalconcernsorotherbarrierstotheireffectivework,inadditiontocelebratingkeyachievements.

“HavingrecentlyjoinedtheExecutiveTeam,thesesessionsreallygavemeafantasticinsightintothededicationandhardworkofcolleaguesacrosstheservice,”MsSweeneysaid.

“Itwasalsogreattohearfirsthandaboutlocalinitiativestosupportcommunities,andwithrespectivemeetingsheldjointlyinsomeplaces,toalsoobservetheverycloseandcollegiaterelationshipsbetweenourhospitalandGPteams.”

Keyareasoffocusforthisroundofmeetings-whichincludestandardmonitoringofkeyactivity,workforceandfinancialdata–wereindividualactionplansinresponsetotheWorkingforQueenslandsurvey

2019andareviewoflocalmandatorytrainingrates.

Consistentfeedbackreceivedfromcolleaguesincludedthewelcomeintroductionofthe#myPathwayleadershiplandscapetoinitiatesupportiveconversations,aswellasbeingabletodrawdirectlinesbetweenpeople’srolesandresponsibilitiesandthewiderobjectivesofthebusiness.

WhenAllyCampbellmovedtotheSouthWestasagraduatenursein2017shehadnoideajusthowfortunateshewasandhowmanyopportunitieswouldcomeherway.

AndthisincludesbeingoneoftheSouthWest’smostsuccessfulpreceptorprogramnursegraduatesafterrecentlybeingappointedtheClinicalNurseatCunnamulla.

OriginallyfromBrisbane,AllydecidedtotakeupagraduatenursepositioninCunnamullatobeclosertoherhusband’sfamilyproperty.

“Hemovedbackherebeforefinishingmydegree,sotheopportunitytoworkintheSouthWestclosetohimreallydrewmein,”Allysaid.

“WhenIfirststartedouthereitwasareallyhardadjustment.I’dlefteverythingIknewandeveryoneIlovedtoliveonasheepandcattlestationandstartmynursingcareerinasmallruralhospitalwheretherewasn’tapreceptorpositionatthetime.

“Luckyformeeveryoneoutherewassowelcoming.BeforelongIdiscoveredagreatgroupoffriendsandwiththesupportIreceivedfrommyfellownewgraduatewhostartedinCunnamullaatthesametimeasme,theamazingsupportfromtheCunnamullaHospitalstaffandtheSouthWestHHSeducators,IfellinlovewiththeSouthWest.”

“Thenewpreceptorprogramisanamazingstepforwardinnewgraduatetransitioning.ItissoimportanttonurtureandsupportnewgraduatestohelpthemgrowintothenursestheyfirstlywanttobeandsecondlyneedhereintheSouthWest,”Allysaid.

“I’mverypassionateaboutgettingridofthestigmathatnurseshaveforthenewgraduates.Forme,IthinkwecanalllearnfromoneanotherandIthinkit’snecessarytohavepreceptorsavailabletothosenewfacesinnursingwho,willonedaypossiblynursesomeoneweknowandlove.”

Allyisanadvocateforeverynurseneedingtoexperienceruralandremotenursingasshebelievesyoudogettoexperiencesomuchmoreinthebush.

“Iloveruralnursing,itisverymuchthesaying“jackofalltrades”howeverIstronglybelievewedomasterourownruralnursingskills,”shesaid.

“IlovethelearningopportunitiesandthethingsyougettoexperienceouthereintheSouthWest.ItakeanylearningopportunityIcanorofferedfromnursingconferences,workshops,hospitalexchangesandevenoverseasvolunteernursing.

“WearesosupportedintheSouthWesttocontinuallylearnandup-skillwhichissoimportantinourchosencareer.”

SouthWestHHSSeniorProjectOfficer,InfrastructureandMaintenanceScottWassmansaidhavingprominentflagpolesateachofourfacilitiesnotonlymadethemmorewelcomingforvisitorsandpatients,buttheyalsoprovidedasenseofcommunity.

“Itwasidentifiedthatevensomeofourresidentsmadementionoffacilitiesthatdidn’thavethemsowemadeitaprioritytoensurewecouldputthemupateachfacilityacrosstheSouthWest,”Scottsaid.

“Itisanupgradethatshowsrespectandrecognitionofourfirstnations.Itshowscommunitypartnershipandreconciliationplusarealsenseofcommunity.

“Allthreeflagswillberaisedandilluminatedoncethepolesareinstalledandalreadysomeofthefacilitiesarecompleted,withthegoalofhavingmostofourmajorsitescompletedbyAnzacDay.”

“Thisnewequipmentwillbeusedforouremergencyairwaytrolleysandwillbeavailableateachofourhubsites.

“Theywillgiveanextramarginofsafetyduringanaestheticsaswellasemergencyairwaysituations.”

ThisyearmarkssomeexcitingchangeswhenitcomestotheuseoftechnologyinourprimarycareandgeneralpracticesthroughthenewBestPracticeInfrastructureImprovementProject(BPIIP).

TheSouthWestHHSExecutiveandBoardhaverecognisedyourpatiencewiththemanychallengesyouhavefacedwiththeslowperformanceofthesystem,manualbackupprocesses,lackofdatasharingacrossthesouthWestHHSandoutofstepupdates.

WeaimtofixthiswiththeBPIIPandarecommittedtodeliveringabetter‘BestPractice’experience.

InJanuary,ourBoardapprovedthebusinesscasetoupgradeandimprovetheinfrastructurethatsupportstheBestPracticesystem.Ithasbeenalongroadtogettothispoint,butwearehere!

TheBPIIPaimstoprovideamodern,contemporaryplatformthatwillenableustohavemorereliableperformancewithBestPractice.

ItwillalsoenableustohaveawholeofHHSrecordforourpatients,engagewithMyHealthRecordandintegratewithHBCISsothatwecanincludepatientURnumbersinBestPractice.Theseareambitiousaims,buttheExecutiveandtheBoardfeelwearemorethanready.

Projectplanninghascommenced,andwehopethatwecanhaveallpracticesmigratedbyJune!Sopleasebearwithusasweplan,build,testanddeliverthisexcitinginitiative.

Weknowthatthisprojectwillnotfixeverything.Someofoursiteshaveslownetworksorconnectionsthatdon’tgotheshortestdistancebetweensites.

WeareworkingcloselywitheHealthQueenslandandTelstratoimprovetheperformanceofournetwork.Whilewecanimprovetheinfrastructureunderpinningthesystem,therewillalwaysbesomelimitationsbecauseofthedistanceournetworktravels.

Inthemeantime,wearegoingfullsteamahead,cleansingourdata,understandingthebestwaytobringalltheseparateinstancesofBestPracticetogetherandensuringthatallsitesareonthesameversion,withthesamemodulesactivated.Theworkhasbegun!

NEW ROMA HOSPITALCOMMISSIONING UPDATE

CONSTRUCTIONPROGRESS

ThefocusofthenewRomaHospitalcommissioningactivitiesthroughFebruaryhasbeenonfinalconfirmationoftheshelvingsolutionsforallthehospitalstorerooms.

WorkhascontinuedtorefinethemoveplanningandtheMoveStrategy,developedinJanuary,hasbeenendorsedbytheProjectCommissioningCommitteeandiscurrentlybeingreviewedbytheProjectSteeringCommitteepriortofinalapproval.

Theprocessforpre-occupancytestingandevaluationhasalsobeencompleted,whichisasystematicprocessforverifyingtheperformanceofthefacilities,systemsand

assembliestoensurethattheroomsfunctionfortheirintendedpurpose;thatequipmentisinstalledandworkingandthatfinishes,fittingsandfixtures,includingdataandpowerpoints,areaspertheapproveddocumentation.

ThecommissioningleadswillcompletethisprocesswiththecommissioningteamduringWatpac’soperationaltrialperiod.

TheregularsitetoursforstaffarecontinuingtobeverypopularwithalltourdatesfillingquicklyandsomeweeksinMarchalreadybooked.Theseprovidestaffwiththeopportunitytovisitallareaswithinthenewhospital,manyofwhicharenearcompletionintermsofinternalfitout.
