“Our Mission is to impact the lives of young people

by providing educational programmes that build

character and instil life-enhancing values and

promote healthy choices through the game of golf”

The First Tee is a youth development organisation which focuses on equipping its students with skills to help them on their journey through life. Research determined that the primary reason more children, and especially economically disadvantaged children, did not play golf was because of the lack of places that welcomed them, places they could physically get to, and places that they could afford. The World Golf Foundation created The First Tee in November 1997 as a way to bring golf to young people that otherwise would not be exposed to the game and its positive values. ts mission is “to impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf”. Through The First Tee Life Skills Experience, a curriculum for teaching character education through specific life skills, children and teenagers discover how the skills essential to success on a golf course can help them flourish in life. These skills include personal development, teamwork, relationship building, relating to others, social skills and managing difficult situations

The First Tee was launched in Limerick in October 2005. Since then hundreds of children from schools and youth organisations across Limerick have enjoyed participating in the programme. Mack Trading Amenity Management, Limerick City Council, Limerick City & County Local Sports Partnerships, HSE Mid-West, JP McManus Charitable Foundation, and Limerick Enterprise Development Partnership and the membership of Rathbane Golf Club have supported the project. The programme is open to boys and girls aged 8 – 18 years old. Equipment is provided and students take part in structured weekly or bi-weekly classes. A nominal fee is charged to take part in the programme which can be waived based on personal circumstances.

“Our Mission is to provide Professional Therapeutic Counselling, Support and Helpline Service to those Bereaved

through Suicide with Respect, Dignity and Compassion.”

CONSOLE /

Page 9: Pulse 2011

The 1Life Helpline was launched on 21 October 2009, by Padraig Harrington, at the Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin. 1Life is a 24 hour Suicide Prevention Helpline for anyone in Suicidal Distress and was founded jointly by Console and the 3Ts. The service is predominantly for people with active thoughts of suicide or of not wanting to continue with life, individuals who engage in acts of deliberate self-harm, people whose thoughts have progressed to active planning for suicide, people affected by others suicidal behaviour, those who have bereaved through suicide and others who may be in crisis, related to suicide. The core objectives of the service are to provide early intervention to support callers by talking about their suicidal ideation, provide immediate intervention (through third parties if necessary) to those at high risk of suicide, promote safety by identifying imminent risk of self-harm and suicidal behaviour of the caller, provide relevant information to the caller, enhance the caller’s resourcefulness - strengthening short-term coping and life supports for the caller, provide referrals that offer options for other levels of intervention or support and raise awareness and encourage callers to seek help early.

1Life draws on best practice in the field of Crisis Helpline Counseling. All 1Life Counselors and Volunteers have attained recognised qualifications and accreditations in the disciplines of Psychotherapy, Psychology or Counseling. The 1Life Helpline is provided by a team of permanent clinical staff, contract workers and volunteers who are non-judgmental, empathetic and supportive, who work together with callers to solve problems. All calls to 1Life are confidential and are treated with respect.

THEMID-WESTERN CANCER FOUNDATIONThe aim of the Mid-Western Caner Foundation’s is to provide holistic care for patients with cancer and support research in the Mid-West region. It aims to ensure that any donations made are managed and monitored in a transparent manner, and to ensure that resulting resources are invested appropriately and efficiently. The Mid Western Cancer Centre in Limerick provides a full range of services to patients with cancer such as a dedicated inpatient Ward and a Haematology/Oncology Day Ward where patients attend for investigation, at diagnosis time and for treatment thereafter. It also has a Regional Specialist Breast Unit, Radiotherapy Centre and Palliative Care Services. Patients and their families can also avail of the Patient Information and Support Centre which provides patients and their families with up-to-date, research-based information on their cancer and their treatment by qualified and experienced staff. The Support Centre also provides Support Groups, Psychological Support and Complementary Therapies provided by volunteers in a quiet and peaceful environment. These services are all critical to the people of the Mid West but need to be updated and expanded to accommodate the growing population and increasing number of patients with cancer in the region. The money raised by the Mid-Western Cancer Foundation is used to enhance the Cancer Centre facilities and to make sure that the best treatment, services and cutting edge technology is available to people with cancer in the Mid West. The Mid-Western Cancer Foundation was established by Professor R. K. Gupta, Consultant Medical Oncologist and Director of Cancer Services at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, Limerick in 2007. It is located on the grounds of the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, adjacent to the Mid-Western Cancer Centre.

Vivion Grisewood,Campaigns and Services Officer“When I was in Third Year in 2009, three of my mates and I decided to build a raft for the raft race. But we had a serious problem trying to keep it upright in the water which resulted in the four of us flying down the river in an upside down raft while being pelted with eggs from the shore. Crawling into last place we then headed straight off to the five-a-side soccer, soaking wet, covered in a mixture of egg, mud and shit.”

Finn McDuffie, Communications Officer“I remember coming home to Plassey one day in first year (2006!) to find my housemates drunk and trying to make sausage sandwiches. I recall cans and ketchup everywhere. Later that day, we pushed one of the lads out the door in his birthday suit, with nothing more than a hurley in his hand.”

Aoife Finnerty, Education Officer“It’s definitely the atmosphere that always takes hold of the campus. The feel good factor is everywhere and no matter what the weather, you can’t fail to have fun! It’s one week you’ll always enjoy!”

Ruán Dillon McLoughlin, President“When I was in Second Year, one of my mates and I were messing around outside the Stables archway having the banter. Being slightly intoxicated, I playfully pushed him into the bushes (catapulted may be more appropriate) and next thing I see is him cheerfully picking himself up out of the bushes with a full bottle of wine in his hand! Score!”

Dan Comerford, PSA President“I’ve been through six Charity Weeks (Once RAG Week) and my favourite memory has to be from First Year. I had nothing to compare it to. So every moment was extra special. From the bungee jumping to queuing for Wonka tickets and trying to make all five nights out, I think the craic I had in Plassey tops the list.”

Derek Daly, Welfare Officer“By far, my best memory is from last year, when I was involved with the MnMs. It gave me a completely different view of Charity Week and I gained a greater sense of the atmosphere that takes over Castletroy.”

Everyone’s Got A Charity Week Memory! So guys, what’s yours?

Well it’s sometimes easier dealing with your own peers than some random outsider. We are pretty tolerant and almost always see the funny side of things. We spend most of our time minding, patching up and taking care of students, so I would like to think we’re friendlier than bouncers. This Charity Week have a blast! Go nuts! Drink, dance, shift, roll around and smile! But don’t forget to give a little back, eat, sleep and look after your friends.

Take care and have an unreal week!

Your Ents CrewIf you don’t know us, we’re a small group ofUL students who get paid to safeguardyour enjoyment at ULSU events.

The ActsThe Undercover Creeps“The Undercover Creeps put on a show you will never forget. So dust off the dancing shoes and prepare to be stunned, amazed and dance your night away to two of the finest DJs you’re ever going to see in UL!” Consisting of Ireland’s finest two party DJs, Johnny Hammond and DJ Flip, the Undercover Creeps have been tearing up dance floors across the country with their unique blend of scratching, mixing and mash ups. Johnny is a full time, Limerick-based DJ of thirteen years. His CV boasts performances at Oxygen, Planet Love and Global Gathering. Described by many as Ireland’s most experienced club DJ, he has played memorable sets with Tiesto, Deadmau5, Faithless and Calvin Harris. DJ Flip (aka Ronan Carney) got major kudos when he scratched his way to the title of ITF World Scratch Champion in 2003. It’s been onward and upward since then. He’s here and he’s 150% in your face at all times. He says what he wants, when he wants, where he wants, to who he wants. He covers the spectrum.

CraicwhoresLimerick born and bred, these fine young gentlemen have been making lots of noise (of a good kind) on the local club and DJ scene. Having debuted in ULSU’s very own Midweek Madness, these boys ooze raw talent in the form of rocking beats and no-nonsense boppin’ mixes! Dealing the craic out to the masses, in craic is what the boys trust! So prepare your ears as the CraicWhores and their party penguin serve up a musical buffet bound to please the masses!Barry Sinclair (Hypnotist)

This master hypnotist and mind reader brings his highly entertaining show to UL for one night only. Fast paced and interactive, his show will thrill you. Dubbed by The Irish Independent as “the king of college entertainment,” his show is sure to go down well. When Sinclair visits a college, it’s not just a performance, it’s an experience! Minds are read, predictions are made and people hypnotized instantly. College audiences love what this true professional does and he will leave you mystified.

Steve Spade (Magician)He has wowed audiences in Ireland, the UK and the USA. So it’s safe to say Steve Spade has more than just one trick up his sleeve. Crowds have enjoyed the thrills and wonder of his clever blend of comedy and magic, emanating from a popular YouTube channel. From predicting the news during a 2FM appearance to memorable performances at Electric Picnic, Steve Spade has gained recognition as an entertainer who guarantees amazement and laughter. Watch this spade!

Page 31: Pulse 2011

And that’s not even mentioning an epic appearance on RTE’s Liveline with Joe

Duffy, a press conference outside the Dáil, a chat on The Late Late show and the

acclaim associated with being the second most tweeted video in the world.

The Rubberbandits are the hottest thing in Ireland and maybe the Universe right

now. Theirs is the most eagerly anticipated tour of the year. They have packed

out two shows at Electric Picnic and feature in a weekly slot on RTE’s Republic of

Telly. They’ve also sold out three nights in London and these guys also topped

the charts at Christmas. Their live show see’s Blind Boy, Mr. Chrome and DJ Willie

O’DJ straddle the stage like tracksuit wearing demi-Gods, singing about the glue

that binds us together, jokes about snails, jocking horses and much more. Cardle

might have looted the Christmas Number One, but the Rubberbandits’ live show

is about so much more than that. You need it in your disco!

TheRubberbanditsIf you don’t know about Horse Outside and the Rubberbandits, then you’d better have a good excuse! These guys have accumulated an amazing 4.5 million

YouTube views since 8 December last year. Check the statistics yourself!
